Through Michael McClay, we can have a wonder picture of one of the best shows on TV. Through MANY pictures (a lot in color) and words, we can learn how these four greatly made this show: I Love Lucy. The book takes you through all of their lives before, during and after the show. Three parts are in this facinating book; one is about the show. And the other two are thirty-five of the classic episodes (some of which were chosen by Lucille Ball herself!!); and the last section is ALL 179 episodes in order that they went on air.

The book is definitly five stars and you cannot read this book once. It is great to just look at and you can learn so much about Luciile Ball, Desi Arnaz and Vivian Vance and William Frawley. So get yourself this I Love Lucy treasure TODAY!!!!

Who doesn't LOVE Lucy? This book is THE definitive guide for all us die-hard, lifelong, Lucy fans. It is chock full of facts, anecdotes, black and white and colour photos, etc. By far, the most comprehensive book on the series I have ever read. Introduced by daughter, Lucie Arnaz, we are taken down memory lane and even allowed BACKSTAGE where we get glimpses of the REAL life Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Strictly for the fans, who will understand and appreciate the attention to detail here.

AMAZING!! This is one of the best books written about "I Love Lucy." Michael McClay certainly knew what he was doing when he gave us this great book on the best show in picture history. Through many pictures (many in color) and words, McClay is able to tell you ALL about "I Love Lucy" and the great people that made it so great. He tells not only about the people at the time of the show, but gives, not much but accurate, information about the four wonderful people that made the show so successful before and after the shows were made. He gives you thirty-five classic episodes that are the hits in the "I Love Lucy" shows. And also a TV-ography of the 179 "I Love Lucy" shows in the order that they went on the air. And the "I Love Lucy" Theme Song music given at the beginning of the three parts that are in this book has been played many times on my piano.

This is truely the best book there is on the show "I Love Lucy" (but no "I Love Lucy" book can beat Lucille Ball's book "Love, Lucy;" it covers her whole life as well as the "I Love Lucy" shows.Get that one too because both are both greatly recommended). Some books don't give very much or very accurate information on this show. But this one gives you all of the information, accurately, about the show.

I greatly encoutrage you top get this book especially if you are a Lucy fan (and if you are not, reading this book will give you a great start). You will NOT be disappionted. You will have too much trouble putting it down that when you finish it, you will want to read it again--you will never get tired of it. Get yours TODAY and you WILL enjoy!

This beautiful book introduced me to the world of "I Love Lucy" literature, and I must say I got off on the right foot! The photographs are beautiful, and the text is surprisingly thorough for a "picture history". This would make an enjoyable addition to anyone's Lucy collection (it's also a great place to start!).

I have enjoyed Vicki's style of speaking to her reader, as if she was right in the room with you. She coaches you and gets into your head and heart. She allows you to see the CEO in yourself. This book is not just for the nurses that have joined her company, but for every woman go wants to bring her own light to this dark needy world and make a difference. Even if it is one woman at a time.

Eavesdrop on any group of women lunching at the next table and you are likely to witness laughter, tears, support, commiseration and collaboration in action. Entrepreneur Vickie Milazzo identifies how women can best utilize these natural feminine capabilities to achieve life and career success and fulfillment. Milazzo dedicates an insightful, thorough chapter to each of the "10 Feminine Forces" she has identified. She uses personal stories and the experiences of successful women to coach you to new, unexplored heights. Sometimes her attempt to motivate through her personal saga crosses the line from inspiring to self-congratulatory. Yet, if you set aside this editorial flaw, you have a well-scripted formula for success. We recommend this book to all women who share a spark, a dream and the desire for a richer, fuller life.

I've never read a self-help type book before, and probably wouldn't have picked this book out on my own. I recieved a copy of this book through a marketing campaign, and figured that I'd give it a shot.

I usually fly through novels and non-fiction books, so I've had to take a completely diferrent approach to reading this book. I've been plowing through it, one chapter every week or so, and it's been having some impact on how I think about my professional life.

The book is filled with the author's anecdotes as well as stories of other women, and guides you throuh exercises that break down your goals and actions. I'm finding it helpful, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a book to help them understand how to reach their goals.

I really like this book. It's hundreds of color pics. break down each move 1/2 step by 1/2 step and from multiple angles. You don't even need to know how to read. Just follow the pics & arrows highlighting the important grips and positioning. I use volume 2 ("the guard") a little more, but both are really great.

This is a great book. Sequence of pictures are taken from two different angles to capture all the details. Tim Cartmell does a great job describing each step of the technique in simple words.
It covers most of the situations encounter when passing the guard. Will definitely boost you BJJ game.

I'm a blue belt, and this book can definitely improve your top game a lot. No other book cover the subject with so much depth. Sometimes the pictures aren't as crystal clear as Kid Peligro's ones, and you have to get used to the unusual layout. Aside from that the book is awesome and I think intermediate bjj practitioners will get the most out of it.

Great Study on an Important Facet of Groundfighting

Review Date: 2005-11-03
Too many books try to cover too much in their text. This often results in poor details, a small snapshot of someone's game, or unconnected techniques that don't integrate well. It is a fantastic idea to spend an entire volume on one aspect of the game.

I'd read Cartmell's good work in "Effortless Combat Throws" and liked it a lot. I'd never heard of Beneville, though, as per most of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu community.

However, the most important qualification is whther your information is accurate and effective. This book is exactly that.

The book opens up with imporatant details on posture and position. What it is, why you need to get there and - of course - how. This is golden information to the beginner and early intermediate, but more advanced practitioners will even find some useful info here.

Then, onto the guard passes. The passes shown are the same ones you're taught in every class. The details, though, are intricate and accurate. There are a number of options for each pass and photos aplenty, along with concise, accurate text descriptions.

The book covers more than passing and is THE text for the whole game from inside the guard. It covers posture and position, passes from the knees, passes from standing, submission attacks from inside the guard, defenses and counters to attacks and even a great section on a ttacking the turtle position.

More still, the book ends with some great drills that will help you develop the skills described in the book.

This book pioneered the contrasting coloured uniforms on the models and the blue vs white is still a great idea. The photography is great and has views from multiple angles. As said earlier, the text is concise, clear and descriptive.

It's clear that the authors know their subject and have planned this book well. Kudos to them.

Great reference and instructions!

Review Date: 2006-03-19
I'll start off by mentioning the only negative I can think of or noticed:

There are quite a few typos and grammatical errors in the technique descriptions/instructions. However, they only cause a minor distraction, and not enough to warrant giving this book anything less than 5 stars. The reason for this is because all you have to do is look at the accompanying picture and the problem is solved. For example, the instructions will say, "Grab with the right hand or swing to the right" and then you look at the picture and the guy is grabbing with his left hand and swinging to the left. I'm assuming those who buy this book already practice BJJ and are only purchasing the book for reference, so it should be easy to "understand" what the typos meant to say. This, however, leads to the best part of the book.

Everything else about the book is great. The only negative I mentioned above may actually go unnoticed by some. The reason for this is that the pictures are awesome. One may be able to learn a technique just by looking at the pictures. They're that good. The flow and clarity of the pictures makes the detailed instructions seem as an optional supplement.

Another thing that this book does well is it's order. The book starts from the ground up, literally: breaking the guard on your knees, passing the guard on your knees, standing up, breaking the guard standing up, etc, etc... More importantly, whenever the opportunity is given, the authors split the techniques into alternative "finishes" depending on whether or not the opponent reacts.

If you're looking for a well written book with plenty of details for BJJ as a reference, I cannot recommend this more. It's really great to look through and see a technique and think to yourself (or scream out loud), "That's what I should have done in that last fight/roll/etc!"

I will be buying volume 2 for sure.

I had polio at the age of 5. I was so much luckier than alot of Polio Survivors. I got Dr. Bruno's book from the library and read it and read it at least 3X. I have recently ordered the book through Amazon and I am so excited to receive it.

He is an exceptional man, who writes so we can all understand. I will be meeting with Dr. Bruno and his team the end of March, I do not know where my new journey will lead me but I know that I will be safe and in the best of care. I recommend this book to anyone who has had Polio or has unexplained weakness, pain and fatigue everyday.

Reading this book I felt like someone had entered my life and could see my thoughts and frustrations. It was strange. It is so true- we were taught avoidance of the issue. As a nurse I learned about polio in the past tense, and had read few articles on PPS. I had seen polio survivors, even gone to school with a couple but never talked to them and when problems started did not even know who to talk to.
Dr. Bruno covers just about every physical and emotional aspect-- now if I can just retrain myself to take care of me.
I was able to go to the Clinic and meet with Dr. Bruno and he is as genuine in person as he seems in the book. All the built up anxiety came tumbling out in a rush-- because this book showed he has pulse on my life as a post polio patient and seemed to CARE!!.
I think this book should be required reading for all in the medical field.

"Ah ha!" are the words I'd suck in as I read Dr. Bruno's book. After a year's research on my own, I found the PPS Institute and Dr. Bruno's book. Those of us who had Polio (or didn't know that "it" was Polio) only knew one thing - we were over it and had to get on with life and catch up ASAP. We had fear at our back door, and it pushed us onward, every minute of our lives. For me, after cancer, I kept thinking "Its just the chemo" but I had been told in 1982 I had PPS and "Use it or lose it" was the theory protocol, so I kept going like I was short in the back with a "22" fearing I'd lose some dendrite that would nourish a neuron, and the first symptom I had (in '82) would come back. Instead, I became worse - the results were what drove me to discover Dr. Bruno's book and go to the Institute: hundreds of falls, broken bones, lacerated head injuries, tripping for the past 50 years and feeling like a clutz, when I was known as the regional "Happy Tom-Boy" BP (before Polio).

By the time Dr. Bruno told me to just "rest - chill for a few weeks" I had to do it; nothing else worked. It DID. I read the book again, and again...trying to find a glitch in his neuro-networking and neurology statements, but I couldn't. So, I did go to the Institute.

Everyone who knows anyone who's had Polio, or any sudden onset illness, or even as my little sister, used to drip food out of her nostrils at age 2 (it was Polio - 1954), must read this book. Be prepared to talk to doctors - they must have PPS as part of their required CMEs NOW. Post Polio surivors can no longer accept mediocre care, and repeated anesthesia "accidents (as I did)." With or without insurance, humans have a basic right to respect and care. I had Polio - I knew I did - and the fears associated with going "back" into it were at times paralyzing in itself...thus I kept swimming daily - often for three hours and lifting weights, anything to avoid breathing problems again, or the horrid stiff neck, or ... seeing my arm next to me and not moving even when I yelled at it!

Post Polio Paradox will give the reader the information needed to take to the medical professionals, and to educate themselves, and . . . gradually, safely, comfortably, change their lives from the fatalistic Type A personalities (which did get us through the horrors of Polio), but paradoxically - aptly put, can destroy us now. IF we are real, we will be able to see our 'worn' parts, accept them, and move on to another phrase in our lives - taking care of ourselves. "Polio Class of 1950"

There are five prom queen candidates for the Shadyside High senior prom. One of them gets kidnapped and then another one gets murdered. Lizzy McVay, one of the prom queen candidates, realizes someone wants all the prom queens dead. Now she must find the murderer before she's next to die.

All I can say is "wow." What a great book! There are so many suspects in this book that it's almost impossible to guess who it is. I could've sworn it was that guy but it was actually someone else. Trust me, you'll never be able to guess the murderer.

If you read this book, expect the murderer to be who you least suspect.

Rachel's parents were out for ice cream so the killer took the chance to kill her. Elana was murdered in school. She was at the auditiorium. In the end, Dawn[Lizzy's friend] almost died because of the killer but because of Lizzy, she lived.

Mr. Heuser accomplished his mission! His book is, indeed, truly inspiring and encouraging! The personalized narrative piqued my interest in exploring each process and project in his home renovation--not just the ones of particular interest to me. I gleaned marvelous insights regarding the use of color and ways to create added warmth and meaning to a space. The before, during and after illustrations inspire confidence, as do the detailed materials/sources lists. From my experience, as a lay person, this is by far the best publication I've found on the subject. Heuser's talent is awe inspiring and his passion for art cannot help but engage any reader in the creative process--individually, or in partnership with someone who can help to create a living canvas for their home. Curtis Heuser and North Light Books have done a splendid job in producing a book that will be loved and appreciated by many!

Choose this book if you find comfort in other peoples problems or want to know if your symptoms could be lyme disease. Not very well written, more a collection of chart notes. The patient stories are eye opening, to say the least. It's puts in perspective what the Lyme patient has to go through to get diagnonsed, and get coverage from Medicare or insuranrce companies (not!!). Everything is out of pocket. Read about Joan, the last patient, a Canadian, who has to deal with her government, and the U.S. Very frustrating!!

This book is excellently written. As a student of public health, it's great to see a book that shows the effects of lyme disease on those who have it. It's a great resource for contacts if one contracts this chronic illness, and builds empathy for those who have contracted it. Most importantly, it delivers the message that treatment for lyme disease must be sought immediately, and that the current methods of treatment are often times ineffective. Overall, an enlightening and excellent piece.

Marvin L. Brown is a gifted storyteller. I thoroughly enjoyed his book which was rich with characters spanning a range from the good, bad and ugly.

The main character of this book, a former lawman by the name of J.M. Brown and known as "Whistler", is a man whose quest to find his sister leads him through a series of adventures and engaging characters throughout this story.

In a world where so many lines have been blurred, Whistler reminds us of a time when compromising right and wrong was not an option. A time when your character and your word were the most valuable things you carried with you. All this and a story that brings the reader along, echoing the sentiments of a time that sometimes seems forgotten. I am glad that Marvin L. Brown has brought it back in this story and hope that he will continue to bring us stories that make us remember.

Wonderful Little Book!

I just recently read and thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Brown's "Empty Holster". I read it in one sitting and was left wishing that it would have continued on much longer. It's a fantastic story that was well written and researched by the author. The absense of cussing and other unwholesome aspects of modern books was a welcome surprise. It puts one in mind of Louis L'Amore or Zane Grey. It's unfortunate that Hollywood is no longer interested in making Westerns because this little book would be the basis for a great movie. Maybe the screenwriters should have a peak at it anyway.

Not only was I able to read Mr. Brown's book, but I also had the honor of meeting and discussing it with him personally (via the Internet). Mr. Brown strikes me as fine person whose roots and family values are deeply ingrained with the mythos of the Old West.

Lee, the book was excellent. What more is there to say? ...Regards,

he book is "Golden Age" meets Hopalong Cassidy. There is a distinct knowledge of who is a good guy and who is a bad guy, yet Whistler's flaws come out occasionally. He is a veteran of the War Between the States and a former lawman and a former cattle drover, yet that is all you are shown of his background. Whistler himself, doesn't recall most of the war.
The scene that follows the above opening, Whistler is ambushed. All he sees of his assailants is a large white horse. His horse and guns are stolen and he is left for dead. He is found by his long lost sister and taken in for recovery.
Although the description of his renewing his relationship with his sister and becoming acquainted with her husband and two children, Temperance, whom he calls his angel, and Little John, is artfully done, there could have been a bit more detail of his recuperation.

Eusebius wrote from the 3rd century of things available to those of his time, some of which later became otherwise unavilable to us, and of the views and knowledge of early church members. Eusebius erred in some statements, but his statements that erred also reveal the mindset of some of the early church. This stimulating and informative work fills in gaps of information not otherwise available to thinkers on historical and spiritual matters.

I read this book and I found it to be very useful in doing research on the record of Eusebius. I read some unfactual based reports of the Faith. The chapter on Book One has some statements that are in question as in regards to what the early Disciples taught. All in All it is a good book to read for any student.

The Church History, translated by Paul Maier, is an eminently readable translation of an important classic. Reading this book is like sitting down in the portico with a Christian who lived 1,700 years ago and recorded the events of the founding of Christianity as a near-firsthand observer. For most of the book, Eusebius draws liberally on quotations from earlier Church Fathers, but even for those portions of his history for which he was not eyewitness, the world he describes is as much like own as the world of the Revolutionary War or Civil War is for contemporary Americans: they are people of the same language, nation, geography, and historical era. His accounts of the events of his own lifetime are correspondingly richer. What he lacks as a critical historian he fills in through intimacy with the context he is documenting.

He covers the lives of the apostles and their successors and the ensuing discussions over the canonicity of the various writings in use by Christians of the first through early fourth centuries. He covers the frequent persecutions in painfully vivid--although never pornographic--detail. He describes the leaders in the first 300 years of the church, including important writings and interactions with elements inside and outside the church, often with alarming parallels to contemporary circumstances. While Eusebius is usually evenhanded, the reader may find it difficult to forgive his "cloying" (in Maier's words) accounts of the lives of Origen and Constantine. While we all might aspire to a fraction of the historical gravitas of these two men, panegyric remains a tough sell to the contemporary reader. This we must accept and move on.

Eusebius is faulted for his hero worship, his few factual errors, and his willingness to ascribe historical causes to supernatural agents like God and Satan. While these causes may be inaccessible to the published works of the modern critical historian, should we really blame a pre-modern scholar for employing them? Far from diminishing the value of The Church History as a source, they dare to question the naturalistic historiography that is otherwise an unassailable assumption of modernist orthodoxy. Rather than point and laugh (or throw him to the wild beasts), might this be a discussion we would consider entering into with him?

In his introduction, the translator clues us in on how much pain he saved us by serving as editor as well. Ancient authors never took Freshman Composition, and Strunk and White had not yet reduced writing to a minimalist utility, so a direct translation of the Eusebius' text would have been perhaps twice as long and at least four times less pleasant to read. This translation is as readable as it is fresh, and the chapter summaries help provide helpful historical context and sympathetic, if occasionally critical commentary.

An invaluable addition to private and public library Religious History shelves.

Eusebius: The Church History is an English translation with extensive commentary by Paul L. Maier (Professor of Ancient History, Western Michigan University) of the classic texts by Eusebius (260 - 339 A.D.), recognized as the first man to trace the rise of Christianity during its first three centuries, from Jesus Christ to Constantine. Dubbed the "Father of Church History", Eusebius wrote of apostles, church fathers, emperors, bishops, heretics, confessors, martyrs, and paragons of faith. A handful of black-and-white photographs of ancient sculpture or other images illustrate this historical source, made readily accessible to the reading public through Maier's illuminating insights. An invaluable addition to private and public library Religious History shelves.

One of the most important books that a Christian can own

Eusebius of Caesarea (c.263-c.339) is remembered to day as the father of Church history, as his history is the oldest one that has survived to today. (Actually, Hegesippus (c.110-c.180) wrote an earlier chronicle of his time, but all that has survived is the eight passages quoted by Eusebius.) Now, Eusebius was not a great historian, and his work has been correctly criticized for a number of issues, most notably the rambling style that makes his work dull and lifeless for the modern reader.

But, that said, what makes Eusebius's book so exciting is that he was alive and writing back in the very earliest days of the Church. Indeed, combining this book with the works of Josephus (37-100), from whom Eusebius quotes extensively, gives you a great look into the early years post-Christ.

So, while I admit that this book is rather slow and somewhat heavy to read, I do think that it is one of the most important books that a Christian can own. I very highly recommend this book!

A book about Love, Ideals, Passion, Determination

I enjoyed this book a lot. It makes you think a lot even after you've finished it. There are many lessons to be learned from this book. For example: choosing between your ideals and the loved ones (when of course they are in conflict), God vs atheism, love and hate (how one can possess both of them towards the same person), ideals and the will and determination to fight for them.

Love/Politics/Fight all that and well written!

Read this book for the first time in Russian when I was 12 and it had been my favorite book ever since. Was able to read it in the original language just some years later, realizing that:
1. The Russian translation is wonderful:)
2. The book is still my favorite one.

It's amazing how Voynish manages to write a book which countains a love story, yet not boring nor sexual, a fight story, yet not overpatriotic/stupid. The continuation book feets perfectly ("An Interrupited Friendship" and may be should be read between the 1st and the 2nd parts of "The Gadfly" (I read the "Interrupted Friendship" some years after "The Gadfly" and it was still perfect).

BTW, Ethel Lilian is a daughter of mr. Bool - for those of us who know what boolean algebra is - that's her father's doing! I know it's a piece of useless information:)

THE Most Moving Book I Ever Read

It's rather a mystery to me that this book has never gained the kind of popularity in the US that it's always had in Russia. And yes, one can put it down to its political background and revolutionary theme, especially in what is a "lesser" known milieu of Italy in the 1840's, but really this is entirely the outer shell that could easily have been set elsewhere more "popular." I think the problem after all is that this book has been judged by its cover, as it were. But setting aside, it is the most profoundly human and tragic book you may ever read. Much was said of the themes of the book in the other reviews, and it is all true, so I will only say that the ending of the book caught me riding home on the subway, and I wept like I have never ever wept in my life. People stared at me as if I were insane, but of course I didn't care - I was being affected by something most people would never imagine feeling for anything, and certainly for no "thing" like a book. I wept for two hours afterward. And then I couldn't touch another written word for months. If ever words produced raw, overwhelming feelings, surely it is between the pages of The Gadfly.

Profoundly moving

One of the greatest stories ever told - this book can change your life if you take its ideals to heart. It's not hard to understand why it was so popular among those in the revolutionary movement. I have to say though that when I lent it to two young friends who are Catholic too, they did not seem to be as profoundly moved as I was. The closing scene between the Cardinal and the Gadfly is one of the most heart-wrenching ever written. This book is a classic of its time and of all time. In my top 10 list of the best books I have ever read. Grab it - BTW if anyone is looking for a copy I do have one to spare which is in fairly good condition.

This work is pure treasure and a great place for someone who wishes to begin reading fine literature to start. I cannot believe that I never heard of this book until I was 50! It ended up on my large "reading list" and I had to order it online to find a copy -- then (I kick myself) it laid around here for a year before I opened it. When I finally did, I discovered that I could not put this one down -- a quintessential page-turner. It's a very personal saga of a very good man, and, a Priest who betrays him during an Italian rebel uprising period. I savored "War and Peace" and "The Brothers Karamazov", and while "The Gadfly" is that sort of book (much shorter), it's not such a tough go as the former titles. Voynich was brilliant. I read an average of three books a week, and have done so for many years, and this one is one of my top 3 reads ever. Don't miss this one and if you wish to double your pleasure, get a copy of Dmitri Shostakovich's sountrack to "The Gadfly" movie and allow it to play as wallpaper as you read. Incredible stuff!
