If what you want from a thriller is to be thrilled, then give Brian Freeman a try. A good thriller has to be character-driven, so that you can actually care about the principals and what the plot has to throw at them. Brian Freeman gives us credible characters, a great twisting plot which actually holds together till the end,(see also : Harlan Coben), and believable baddies with plausible motives. Great Stuff !!

The third book in a series of stories involving Duluth police and politicians. The book delivers rapid-fire action from beginning to end. The plotline is a series of different stories or subplots that the author intricately melds together. I especially found it interesting how the author works current events into the book which makes it near impossible to put down. I almost thought I had the ending figured out too...happy to read that I didn't.

Brian Freeman's 3rd outing after last year's Stripped, take Stride and Serena Dial, his paramour from Las Vegas, back to Duluth. Though conflicts of interest prevent Stride from directly investigating the murder of his former partner, he nevertheless becomes involved. Meanwhile, Serena, adjusting to life in the frozen north, has put up her shingle as a PI and is hired to act as an intermediary for a blackmail drop for a prominent local lawyer. What starts as two disparate cases converges into one before diverging into three (or at least it appears to be three).

I enjoyed the interaction and subtlies of the characters, who are well-drawn and interesting, especially the pseudo love-triangle between Stride, Serena and Maggie. This is a well-crafted thriller/mystery with nice twists and surprises. I deducted one star because Freeman tried too hard to make the apparent 3 cases connect. Some of it, especially the "2nd" climax, appears confusing and hard to follow but nonetheless still satisfying and rewarding. Freeman will need to work hard to top this one.

This was my first brian freeman book ,no way will it be the last. It was a very good book filled with many twists and turns. I emailed the author to tell him I loved the book and got a very quick response. He seems very nice and said his new book will be out next feb. Look for it it's called "In the dark"

The Three Musketeers is one of my favorite books and Twenty Years After is practically just as good. The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because the editor, David Coward, gives away the ending of The Man in the Iron Mask. He tells you what happens in the last chapter of the last book in a footnote! DON'T read any of the footnotes in the last 20 pages of the book unless you want the story spoiled, in that case just go to wikipedia.

As the title says, it is twenty years after the events in the Three Musketeers. The four heroes are living their lives as they wanted, but are all slightly disaffected.

Cautiously, they agree to undertake a task for the Queen.

Complicating matters is the son of Milady de Winter, who is an anti-fan of these men, you could say.

The Musketeers must learn to work together again, even if their politics are aims are not all the same.

Thoroughly entertaining, "Twenty Years After" is a fulfilling sequel to a classic swashbuckling masterpiece.

Twenty Years have passed since D'Artagnan and the Musketeers triumphed over Cardinal Richelieu, preserved the Queen's honor, and brought justice upon the face of evil, Milady. The wave of time has carried the four friends down very different paths of life, and they have not been in contact for many years. D'Artagnan, looking for fortune and lost glory, offers his services to the wildly unpopular Cardinal Mazarin. The Cardinal accepts, and commissions D'Artagnan to unite the quartet for the service of France. What follows is a plot filled with twists, turns, surprises, and adventure. Many characters return from "The Three Musketeers," while several new characters play significant roles in "Twenty Years After." One such character, the son of Milady, has a twisted soul intent on the "revenge" of his mother.

Readers of "The Three Musketeers" who loved Dumas' four heroes for their youth, energy, and courage, will now love them for their maturity, wisdom, and honor. Undoubtedly, these are not the same four men we were left with at the end of the first book. The beauty of "Twenty Years After" is Dumas' ability to age the characters appropriately, and show the effect of time on their nature. In doing so, we see that while time has changed much, it has not changed their undying loyalty to each other.

My only issue with "Twenty Years After," and I'm surprised to find myself saying this, is the lack of a romantic aspect. D'Artagnan's love for Madame Bonacieux in "The Three Musketeers" actually pulled the reader in, making D'Artagnan's loss the reader's loss. There is no such story in "Twenty Years After," which I found rather disappointing. Despite this, "Twenty Years After" is an excellent sequel and I recommend it to anybody who enjoyed the first book.

It's been twenty years since the close of The Three Musketeers, and only D'Artagnan remains in service to the French Crown. Richelieu is dead and his protege Mazarin now holds the power behind the throne. Anne of Austria rules as regent for her young son, and civil war threatens France.

D'Artagnan is sent to bring the Musketeers out of retirement, but they find themselves at odds between the two sides in the civil unrest. D'Artagnan wants to be promoted to captain and Porthos who wants to be a baron, side with Mazarin, Athos and Aramis with the Fronduers (sp?). However, they soon find that although much has changed, their love and friendship for each other remain intact, particularly when faced with the evil son of Milady, who is bent upon revenge against those who executed his mother.

There's way too much plot to even try to explain, leave it to say that there is much adventure and derring do, from the civil war in France to the conflict between Charles I and Oliver Cromwell in England. I especially enjoyed the nail biting, sit on the edge of your seat excitement during the escape from England and Mordaunt, along with the rescue of D'Artagnan, Porthos and Athos from Mazarin (what fun!). Along with the excitement comes the humor of their constant banter and escapades making for a near perfect read.

I personally liked the parts in England the best, but I think that's because I have a better understanding of English history than French. Even after researching that period in France and Mazarin online, I still got a bit confused at times, but that is a minor issue in comparison to the rest of the story. Dumas is brilliant (as always) and his dialogue is among the best (as always). An awesome sequel to the Three Musketeers, and I am looking forward to starting the next chapter in this story, The Vicomte De Bragelonne.

It is truly amazing how many people don't have any idea that the Three Musketeers appear in more than the novel of the same name and "The Man in the Iron Mask." I must admit that for many years I was in that category myself but I was absolutely delighted to find that their adventures continued in this book and I must say that I found the exploits in this book to be almost as thrilling as the exploits in the first book.

Dumas played extremely fast and loose with history in the first book and he spends a good deal of time in this installment trying to correct some of his earlier deficiencies. Most notably Cardinal Richelieu, the great villain of the first book is in this book venerated and our heroes even bemoan the fact that they opposed him. It is also notable that Dumas is considerably more faithful to history in this book than he was in the first but don't make the mistake of thinking that this will read like a historical novel because as usual Dumas never lets the facts get in the way of a good story.

Athos, Porthos, d'Artagnan and Aramis have gone their separate ways and have completely lost contact with each other in the twenty years that elapse between the first and second book. So much so in fact that when d'Artagnan tries to put the group back together he has trouble finding his comrades. At the behest of Cardinal Mazarin who has replaced Richelieu d'Artagnan begins to search for his former colleagues so that they can unite to protect the Cardinal and the Queen from a growing revolt in Paris. He does recruit Porthos but the other two are in league with the rebels and then they face each other again when they become involved on different sides of the English Civil War.

In the end however their friendship and the deadly threat posed by someone from their past bring the friends back together and together these men are as usual unstoppable. Dumas has again provided for a swashbuckling good time and an adventure story that few authors can match. If anything, this adventure is more thrilling than the last as it takes place in two countries and even on the sea with only the occasional break so that the always-hungry Porthos can have something to eat. Anyone who enjoyed the first book will certainly enjoy this one and will do so maybe even more so than the last. These Musketeers didn't lose a thing over those twenty years.

I love the whole series and I recommend it for anyone ages 11 and up. Meg Cabot is my favorite author and this book WOW'd me more than any other book I've read by her! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I read these books a few years ago from the library, When a friend picked them up at a bookstore recently, I decided to flip through them again. It wasn't long before I had to buy my own set and re-read them.

Darkest Hour is my favorite in the series as it introduces some interesting new characters and serves as a pivotal turning point in Susannah's relationship with Jesse. The storyline is very intriguing, and humorous, as always. There is plenty to keep the pages turning.

I recommend this series for any girl who likes her love stories a little more unconventional and less Disney. =D

THIS WAS THE BEST OF THE FIRST 4 BOOKS!! Seriously, my favorite!! From the beginning to the end is amazing and very surprising. I didn't want to stop reading. Im a girl of 13 years old and I seriously recomend the series to grade 7 to up.

My daughter got me hooked on this series and I was surprised at the great writing.

I love this book , and I love the character Jesse. This book is nothing but nonstop action and thrills , and some parts are so sad , and how Suze does to get Jesse back is certainly is unexpected. Although the new character Paul is very intriguing and I like his character , I can't wait to read the next book to find out about him.And I love the ending . Meg cabot really undone herself this time!

I am actually reviewing the audiobook from audible.com, but I enjoyed this book so much that I am going to be ordering the physical book for quick reference purposes. Dave Lakhani really has a wealth of information and understanding of how to help people improve their ability to persuade others effectively. This is currently the first book I recommend to others looking for a way to improve their persuasion and selling skills and I expect it to remain my first recommendation for a long time.

I love this book and recommend it. It is an easy read, but more importantly the book touches on the basics of persuasion and gives the reader a better understanding of how, where, and what to focus on in order to be persuasive. Truly enjoyable book!

I finished this fantastic book during a three hour flight across country. It is that good. Dave Lakhani writes in style that draws yyou in and keeps you interested. If it sounds like I am reviewing a fiction title it should, the book reads that well.

I have an extensive persuasion library and this book is in my top three. If you read, studied and applied what is in this book you will amaze yourself with what you can accomplish.

This is apparently a classic camp song - not one I ever heard growing up, though.

My nieces request this book a *minimum* of once a week (and usually, once they request it, they want me to read it over and over again to boot!), and we love it every time. Then they often want me to help them reenact the story - I'll be the bear, then they'll be the bear, then the teddy bear will be the bear....

If you're paying attention as you read it, you can even see the various members of the family change their mood as the story goes on and they get hit with various forms of minor disasters.

My 3 year old son loves this book. When we go for a walk around the neighborhood, he wants to pretend that we are going on a "bear hunt" and we recite the book. Great book for imagination.

Quite simply a children's classic. My 2.5year old loves this book. We also recommend checking out the Michael Rosen reading of this book on You Tube.

I can't imagine not having this in the board book version with my next child! I actually found my copy at Potterybarnkids and I was so excited and so was my child the first time we read it. It's simply so classic, it totally a read-a-loud story every page has some new exciting nature noise to sound out and the repetition is perfect for little ears. I started reading this to my daughter around 18mos and a year later she still loves it! A must for toddler libraries!

I loved this book and song as a child...so I thought that I would get it for my little one. Well it came and the pages are in reverse order and upside down...oh well.

Janice Kleinschmidt's amusing and engaging writing style works its magic on Earth: The Musical. Can't wait to see the finale, which I look forward to reading.

Fun to read, very entertaining. Janice Kleinschmidt's humorous wit makes you laugh out loud, and the author's vivid descriptions create a sense of being right there - like a "fly on the wall". The excerpt left me in suspense! When can we read what happened to Rollie Moon and his encounter with the deep purple eyed woman-slash-alien?

As a lover of science fiction I was easily drawn in to connect with Earth: The Musical. Ms Kleinschmidt has created a suspensful beginning to an extraterrestrial encounter which draws the reader to want to participate (at least intellectually) in this fun, intraspacial romp. I'd rate it highly just for the development of Rolli's character and background as much as for the popular and literary illustions drawn in chapter one. This is a definite "Read me."

Couldn't stop thinking of my time in Italy and the family stories I've heard. Seems authentic...nice pace...what happens next????

Meryl McQueen's use of language is exquisite.

In ONLY SALT REMAINS, she paints a vivid picture of a tiny Italian village. So lyrical is her prose that one can smell the air there, see the houses, hear the sounds. Her understanding of this place seems to be thorough and complete.

McQueen has created an intricate and clever plot which would thwart a lesser author. This story is gripping. The author has a full understanding of the relationship between brothers -- both the affection and the rivalry -- and of the interconnected feelings of extended families.

I look forward to reading a full-length work by Ms. McQueen.

As the imaginary makes one feel the warm sun together with the two main characters that stand out as real people, one feels compelled to find out how the plot evolves. Even though the narration is somewhat rough around the edges, the well-developed characters immediately grab one's interest. The setting provides a detailed backdrop that appears natural in all aspects. The speedy introduction of a "mystery" and the brewing "love conflict" make this introduction more reminiscent of a detective thriller, but they sit well in a short excerpt for catching one's attention. There is great potential both in this story and in the author.

In this excerpt Meryl McQueen confidently sets the scene for her novel with graphic, well-researched descriptions of the location (Solunno, Sicily), main characters (orphaned brothers Francesco and Antonio Vigneri) and the harsh realities of daily life working the saltpans of Sicily in the mid 1930's. Much of the storyline is kept hidden but the reader is left with the bare outlines of a double tragedy that orphaned the Vigneri brothers eight years previously as well as hints of underlying tension between the two brothers themselves and also between them and their paternal uncle Mauro and aunt Pia. Circumstances have made life a struggle for the brothers and conservative small village ostracism has left them social outcasts in their community. Many questions surface in the mind of the reader, the answers to which can only come from the complete novel.
The style of writing and the intermittent use of local dialect seem to constantly remind the reader of the novel's Sicilian setting.

Very unexpected twist - time travel to tzarist Russia to save Anna Karenina! Bravo! Very brave and imaginative! And it works.

I enjoyed the first chapter of Yanina's novel...Intriguing start...Looking forward to the rest of the book.

I'll be buying it. With action propelled by tight accessible prose, interspersed with thoughtful rhetorical flourishes, what's not to like? Especially appealing is the prospect of revisiting Tolstoy's stomping grounds as both contemporary and historical settings. Looking forward to reading on.

The writer provides us with a very descriptive, philosophic and literate view of Moscow present day and near past and then smoothly guides the reader into the far past. Smartly written, but her personal obsession isn't all that interesting after she gets to her point. She ends the chapter flat. There's no hook for me to read on although the quality of her writing might get me into more chapters. I hope that she continues to compare/contrast the old and the new of Russia an introspection not that common to we Canadians.

This felt alienating. I'm not sure who the narrator is speaking to; I'm not sure when it's taking place. I felt distanced from the story in this small excerpt.

What a great beginning! I'm a sucker for interesting worlds, and this seems to promise a well-thought out and well-developed one. I generally don't read noir, and so I can't yet feel for the characters, but the chase scene and the little details made for a fast and engrossing read. I hope to read more of this!

All in all I'd say I am very impressed by what I've seen so far in this book. Be that as it may, one gets the sense while reading that all Subspace needs to bring it to the forefront of modern science fiction is a thorough pass by a talented editor.
The characters and setting are clearly top notch, but unfortunately the pacing - particularly the rate at which invented words are introduced - tends to bog the reader down. A little jargon here and there can pique curiosity and draw the reader in; but introducing four, five, six new terms before the reader has time to figure out what the first three mean for page after page is simply asking us to juggle too many balls at once.
To conceive of a new and vigorous universe is the mark of a good writer, and Justin Robinson has clearly achieved that. Is there a great novel here? Yes. Absolutely. Unfortunately one has to dig a little more than most casual readers would be comfortable with.
That said, I must be fair to insist that once the setting is established, once the politics of the era is set in perspective, once the new lexicon is metabolized, there is one hell of a story here.

Blending genres can be as risky as performing oral surgery on a cranky Sarlacc that declined the anesthetic. Chances are you're going to get bit, and it's going to hurt something fierce. In his debut novel "Subspace", Mr. Robinson has woven a seamless blend of Noir and Science Fiction sure the please the fans of well written stories set in either milieu.

The beginning of this excerpt is tense and fascinating. I was eager to know why Montoya was moving so quickly and who was chasing her. The description of the corridors in Santiago was vivid and interesting, and the author managed to reveal details about this world without slowing down the action.

There are some excellent details about how a world without gravity would function, as in the description of the bar that included where the bar was, where the tables were, and how the patrons would stay where they belonged.

I was a bit lost in the slang of this world. Some I could pick up through context, but other words I thought could have been saved until later, when I would have been able to get a better idea of what they meant.

Ramirez's inner conflict about Montoya's plea is interesting, and his character is obviously very complex. I liked him and would be interested in learning much more of his story. The history of Ramirez, Montoya, and Calderon is enlightening and creates the opportunity for a great deal of tension between the characters of Ramirez and Montoya.

So far this was a fascinating story, and I was disappointed not to have the opportunity to read more of it.

The author of Subspace has created a richly believable zero gravity world. Vibrant descriptions and colorful details draw the reader in, and make him believe - I could smell the odors of the world. The pace of the story is perfect; it keeps moving while continuing to impart interesting information to the reader. The description of the bar is excellent, completely adding to the zero gravity feel.

The slang adds to the story; however, I did feel that it needed some accompanying explanation. Most of it I was able to puzzle out, but this did slow down my comprehension and enjoyment of the story as a whole. Also, some of the characters need the same depth and detail as the world the author has created. At times, they felt a bit shallow or underdeveloped.

All in all, this is a fun, fast-paced read.

This book was really good. It's a sad story but ends out really well. It shows how that we have to just keep going, and if we do that, we'll find joy at the end.

I read my grandson's book and had to have it for my own collection. Since then, I have been buying it for all my animal loving friends.

I love this book i read it in a week because it is so good you can ask my parents im attched to this book. If you are a dog lover you will love this book pick it up and read it give it a try~

Narrated by a good-natured dog named Squirrel, this heart-wrenching book describes her life after she is abandoned and separated from her family while only a puppy.

Squirrel encounters many obstacles as she struggles to survive. This is not an easy read--many of the horrors faced by Squirrel are all too real.

I read this book right after adopting a pair of kittens from an animal shelter. Having just seen how many abused and abandonded animals were living at the shelter made me even more aware of how hard life can be for a stray animal.

Please spay or neuter your pets and support your local no-kill shelter!

This is a wonderful book for ages 10 to 100. If you have a love of dogs then you must read this book. I bought a few copies for friends and for myself. A must for any library of dog books.
