Excellent pocket reference. I'm a 3rd year FP resident and have found it helpful in the office and in the hospital. Just wish there was a new version -last one was in 1997.

The most practical book I use in my medical practice

Mark Graber and staff have done it again. The 3rd edition of the Family Practice handbook is the most complete day to day reference I use. A practical and common sense approach to medicine that includes almost all family medicine topics that can be encountered each day. I even bring this book home each day for review and to assist me on my call nights. I feel this book is especially designed for the busy practioner who needs quick access of the latest medical info. I feel it is reliable and authoritative and I encourage anyone who practices family medicine and is looking for reliable information to assist them in their daily practice to try this book.

This is an evidence-based pocket wonder. Mark Graber, M.D., et. al. do an amazing job of packing the relevant practical facts needed in a daily practice or ER in a small space. The emergency care chapters particularly provide the kind of memory jogging details of care that one needs while on the job.

If you were stranded on a desert island and could only take one family practice book, this should be it. (But wouldn't you take a good novel instead?) It covers the waterfront with details of diagnosis and treatment of all of the common and most of the uncommon disorders without the clutter of the rare. Good for students and residents in my estimation.

The collaborative effort of author Nancy Carson and photographer Jennifer Jones, Believing In Ourselves: A Celebration Of Women showcases the wisdom and inspiration of thirty-five ordinary but nonetheless remarkable women drawn from all over North America. Black-and-white photographs enhance each of the women and their exemplary encouragements placing pinnacle importance upon women having faith in themselves to achieve their goals, dreams, and aspirations. Believing In Ourselves is a very highly recommended and inspiring addition to personal improvement and Women's Studies reading lists.

Believing In Ourselves
From a housing project in the Bronx to the U.S. Court of Appeals, from life on welfare to working as a top industrial engineer . . . the stories of these amazing women inspire dreams.

Believing in Ourselves: A Celebration of Women (Andrews McMeel Publishing,..., April 2002) introduces the reader to 35 amazing, inspiring, and unstoppable women from all over North America and from all walks of life. Many of these women have overcome significant obstacles in their lives. Others have succeeded in fulfilling unusual personal goals. Each of them will amaze and inspire you with their courage and fortitude.

Strengthened by hardship and made generous by their experiences, they offer up their stories to guide and encourage others. In this new book you will learn about:

--Mary-Lisa Orth, Tucson, Ariz., who struggled out of welfare to become a top industrial engineer - while raising four children on her own.

--Beth Bakke-Stenehjem, Bismarck, N.D., who gave life and hope to a friend and coworker through the gift of one of her kidneys.

--Sonia Sotomayor, New York, N.Y., who went from a housing project in the Bronx to sitting on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

--Sinthea Brown, Seattle, Wash., who overcame drug addiction and poverty to become a counselor to the homeless in her community.

Believing in Ourselves celebrates the gifts of women who pursued goals that people told them were impossible. They proved themselves by taking the hard road instead of the easy road. Their journeys have instilled each of them with self-awareness, inner peace, and a sense of satisfaction.

About the Author and Photographer
Nancy Carson, a freelance writer from Alexandria, Va., writes regularly about everything from educational technology to family caregiving, but her favorite form is the personal essay. She travels widely and is often in Manhattan, the home of her artist daughter.

The pages of Believing in Ourselves are enhanced by the graceful black-and-white photography of Jennifer Jones of Tucson, Ariz. She attended the New England School of Photography in Boston, Mass. Her photographs have appeared in a number of newspapers and magazines.

A perfect gift for your close friends, your sisters, your mothers, this inspiring collection of stories about the triumphs of real women in their everyday lives, written by Nancy Carson and accompanied by lovely photography from Jennifer Jones, is a reminder of the heroines we encounter daily but don't always recognize as such. These are women who have made their way through extraordinary difficulties and built successful lives for themselves - success defined as they see it, not in the narrow confines only of career and money -often helped along the way by other women. Their life stories, beuatifully presented, serve as a reminder to all of us that: 1) we are each the architect of our own life story, and 2)we don't have to do it all alone. Of course, in Ms. Carson's skillful hands, even a less amazing life would probably provide inspiration to others.
Put this book on your own table or next to your bed, to read on a sunny morning, or when the darkness looms and all seems hopeless: at least one of these women will "speak" to you and help you find a way to go forward.

My children love this book and so do I. The little boy's reactions to Jennifer's amorous advances and then to her absence seem realistic and are very endearing. Another cute "kissing" book to check out is "The Good-night Kiss" by Astrid Mola.

I came across this book while volunteering at a childrens book fair. I just fell in LOVE with it and had to buy it for myself! I have no children, but have read it to my nieces and they loved it too! I am proud to have this 'childrens book' on my bookshelf!

This book is perfect for young children and the young at heart. Adults will love it as much as their children. I read it with first and second graders. They sympathized with the narrator's "Ewww, a girl LIKES me" feelings, and they giggled when he changed his mind. Boys and girls had different reactions over whether or not the narrator should tell his friends of his change of heart.

In a time when children would rather turn on the TV than listen to a good story, this one won over the crowd. They even asked me to "Read it again!"

What a biography should be!

Review Date: 2003-10-02
Jennifer Vaughan Jones has written a compelling page-turner of a biography that is as gripping as a novel. The depth of her research and the connections she makes between people in the worlds of music and literature are commendable. While the book clearly tells the story of a woman who lived at a time when women were without rights and were the property of their husbands, Ms. Jones does not fall into the trap of making this story a hardline feminist rant. She maintains a realistic balance throughout, treating her "characters" fairly and perceptively. Even people who have never heard of Anna Wickham will find this book fascinating. Very highly recommneded

A simply fascinating biographical study

Anna Wickham: A Poet's Daring Life by Jennifer Vaughan Jones (Viterbo University) is an informed and informative biography of the trailblazing female poet Anna Wickham (1883-1947). When Anna's husband felt threatened by her poetry, he had her committed against her will to a mental hospital. Yet it was within those restrictive and alien confines that Anna was stimulated to write eighty moving poems, and find the strength to flourish as a literary creator. Anna eventually separated from her husband and found an (unfortunately unrequited) love for Natalie Clifford Barney, a lesbian American millionaire. Anna Wickham: A Poet's Daring Life is a simply fascinating biographical study and presentation enhanced with exclusive interviews with members of Anna Wickham's family and a newly discovered written correspondence.

This book has such a beautiful message. We would all do well to rad it and absorb it. The artwork is equally delightful featuring a happy-go-lucky little boy. My favorite is when the picture that shows him as a baby. It's amazing how the adorable baby picture really does look like the preschooler in the book. It is just sooooooo sweet. I am very happy with this purchase.

An Episcopal priest, Mark Francisco Bozzuti-Jones has collaborated with artist/illustrator Jennifer Johnson Haywood in God Thought Of You, a picturebook introduction for your children into their relationship with God. "Before God created the world / you were in God's mind / God thought of you and loved you / from the beginning / Before God created the world / God knew that / you would be a child of God". God Thought Of You is not denomination-specific, and embraces a positive, uplifting, and loving view of God. The beautiful, watercolor-style illustrations show young African-American children among the many other creations of God - moon, sun, stars, and animals. A deeply heartwarming and spiritually uplifting picturebook written especially to show young people that we are all children of the living God.

Great Characters!

Review Date: 2008-06-05
Having always been the shortest one in all my classes for just about "forever," I could readily identify with the main character Michael Jordan as he enters middle school, the shortest one in his class. I loved all the characters--especially Michael's homeroom teacher Mrs. Preston and her insightful comments in response to Michael's journaling. A positive message and a delightful read!

A Wonderful, Readable Story

It's not easy to be a short kid with a tall name like Michael Jordan. But that's the plight of the main character in this humorous, lively book. As he struggles to adjust to middle school, Mike learns more about himself, his family, and girls. Though there are real issues explored in the story--some through a journal Mike keeps for his English teacher--the humor and love Mike shares with family and friends make this a gentle, charming book appropriate for all kids. I think it would lend itself well to the classroom (especially, Grades 4-6)as a fun read-aloud or for booklists, and would certainly be a great way to introduce journal writing to students.

Robert Walker had been seen as a tragic figure long before he met his untimely death at the age of 32 at the hands of his psychiatrist. However, author Beverly Linet provides the background, insight, and obvious compassion in attempting to understand him. His relationship with girlfriend, then wife, then former wife Jennifer Jones, is fully explored. Jennifer Jones' life has also had its' share of heartbreak.

The author is able to build suspense even when the reader knows the ending. Excellent book, well paced, insightful, and an excellent resource on the life of Robert Walker and Jennifer Jones.

Having been a fan of both Robert Walker and Jennifer Jone's films, I decided to read this book to find out the story of their marriage and life together. It is a very touching and sad story about the Hollywood couple who were really star-crossed lovers. I highly recommend this book to any of their fans. It
was really good, I'd give it more stars if I could.

--Hal is sixteen and has started a journal to put his sometimes confusing thoughts down on paper: he doesn't believe in anything, including belief, but how can he not believe in belief if he has to believe to do it? Hal's biggest problem besides the belief confusion is Zack, his alter ego and imaginary friend who lives in his mind and replies to all of his questions. Wanting to get rid of Zack, Hal starts a science fiction story featuring Zack as the main character, aboard a ship heading deeper and deeper into outer space. Will this get rid of Zack or does Hal need Zack more than he thinks? --The confusing thoughts of a teenager are brilliantly displayed in this great and funny book. --Marisa
