My sister recently bought me a book. She not being an avid reader and all, it shocked me. She purchased "A Journey To Hell And Back" by Charlotte Russel Johnson. Charlotte is a local author from here in Columbus, GA.
This book really touched me deep into my soul. It's a story of a very hard life started at a very young age. Charlotte told about how she grew up in the projects, left the projects and only to return to the saftey of the projects. She told us how she sold drugs right here on Victory Dr. A street many of us drive everyday. She told how she partied in Phenix City, right across the river where many of us work and/or live.
Charlotte went through so much. She sold herself as a prostitute. She married a man who abused her to no end. She even discusses how she received her 2nd and 3rd degree burns. She tells you the stories of her many trials she had to endure not only here in Columbus, but also in Atlanta and in New York.
Yet through all of this she has prevailed. She showes you how she was able to pull through and become a better person. For anyone who thinks their life is so far gone, or so far down in the dumps and it can't change, take a moment and read this heart touching story of one woman's struggle. And it all happened right here in our own community!!!!!
Thank You Charlotte for sharing your story!!!

I have read "A Journey To Hell And Back" by Charlotte Russell-Johnson, and found it to be a most inspiring book, and very relevant to many young women of today, who are in need of the kind of guidance and insight offered by this book. I have also had the pleasure of meeting Charlotte Russell Johnson, and from my two encounters with her, I believe her to be as genuine as her personal testimony. Her book is a must-read for every young woman in search of direction for her life. I encourage everyone to read this book. It will keep you engaged from the front page to the back.

But buy your own book, because when you lone the book to some one you dont get it back!

Daddy¡¦s Hug¡¦s is an inspirational book about male role in the family circle. It is an important message to all men. We¡¦re the HEAD and not the TAILS, meaning we should always be there for our kids and family. Monetary reasons make this mandatory. Our presence is the key in raising healthy children, both physical and mentally. Our kids have reflections on other people¡¦s lives. When we¡¦re absent in their lives the same pattern continues.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It will bring back pleasant and fond memories of childhood. It also gave me alot to think about. The book focuses on the role the father in the child's life. It reminded me that mothers should be careful in selecting a father for their children because of the seriousness of this position in the child's life. It is a good book for everyone especially mothers and fathers. The stories were so real that I coulld emphathize with sad stories and was emotional over the happy stories. It is hard to put down and can be read in one sitting.

I love this book and have bought it for a few friends children. The CD of the song that comes with the book is wonderful! My husband and I are singing along to it in the car! The reason I gave it four stars, is I would have loved for the author to put the words to the song under each alphabet letter in the story. Overall, it has great illustrations and hand movements to go with it.

I purchased this book for my 5 year old daughter who is in PreK. They are singing the Florida Alphabet at their graduation next week. I got to see a practice round of the song at school and learned there was a book and CD package to have her practice at home too. The book is wonderful with beautiful illustrations and all the words for each letter of the alphabet. It shows the arm movements to accompany each letter to make it more fun. The song is very catchy and fun to sing along with. The only problem is the song will be in your head all day! I would recommend this set for any child learning their letters and sounds.

Kids love this book and song. It is really neat watching your child sing along and do the movements shown in the book. My granddaughter who is only 4 learned this song with movements in a day and never stopped singing it for a week. She loves it. I really think it is worth the money. We both sing it now and do the movements and she lets me know if I get something wrong.
If you want your kids to enjoy reading, start with this book!

We picked up a copy of this book directly from the authors as a gift to my 3 year-old daughter about a year ago. Back then, she wasn't too crazy about books due to her short attention span, so we just read/sang that book and showed her the motions for each letter before bedtime.
Now, only 12 months later, she loves reading this book. We let her pick from her selection of about 60 books each night and this one pops up at least twice a week. What's cool is that she has a lot of fun singing the letters and now she will do the motions with us too. She is just now at the age where she is making the connections between letters and the sounds they make. I suspect she will hit three letter words within a month or two.
If you have trouble getting your kids to find enjoyment in learning their letters, this book will do the trick. But you have to go through all the motions, that's reading, singing and (literally) going through the motions. Pretty soon you AND your child will be having a blast as you teach them to read.

Robert Mann writes the definitive book on the inner workings of Washington. The story of how the civil rights legislation passed in the mid 60's got its start at the 1948 Democratic convention is compelling. It is difficult to put down once you've started. The characters are larger than life, Humphrey, the passionate and visionary liberal, Johnson the pragmatic magician of the senate and later president, Richard Russell, the dean of the southern conservatives, Strom Thurmond, Richard Nixon, Everett Dirksen all provide color for the book and show the deal making, cojoling and outright intimidation that was used to achieve these milestones in legislative history. Mr. Mann shows the human side of all the players while providing an excellent overview of how legislation is borne, cultivated and finally passed. If you want to understand how the system works, read this book.
A highly perceptive and well written account.

This is a clear discussion of the process whereby civil rights legislation passed the Senate in the late 1950's and the 1960's, despite the filibusters threatened and actual of the Southern Democratic senators. It could easily have been a book about political re-alignment as well, but it would probably need to be twice as long. Many of the trends that dictated the course of American politics in the 1960's are seen in microcosm in this book - Would the South bolt the Democratic Party? Would the Democrats capture the African-American vote from the party of Lincoln? Could a Southern Democrat win the Whitehouse? Would the Dixiecrats throw the presidency to the GOP? It is an extremely clear narrative, that occasionally looks at the bigger picture of American politics, and records the force of personality in parliamentary politics. It clearly records the seismic changes that the wily and calculating LBJ, as an otherwise unelectable Southern Democrat, wrought to the Democratic Party after President Kennedy's death, in the search for a personal victory in the 1964 presidential election.

Can America's favorite topic of dissent--race--in an historical context be explained rationally and with fairness from all perspectives? Anyone reading this book, which looks at the finely nuanced legislative maneuvers of those who both proposed as well as opposed the major civil rights initiatives of the 1960s in Congress, would have to say yes. Robert Mann, who is also the author of a fine and revealing biography of Louisiana Senator Russell Long, pulls off what seems like the impossible as he serves up deeply sympathetic profiles of Senator Richard Russell, who maintained a last-ditch effort against civil rights legislation, the always-bouyant Hubert Humprey, who was civil right's greatest friend in Washington, and Lyndon Johnson, who, in an act of unheralded nobility, staked his entire presidency upon the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the even-more politically vital 1965 Voting Rights Act. Most of us know the civil rights struggle from the perspective of the brave activists, inspired by Martin Luther King, who fought for their vision on the streets. Now meet the mysterious and mighty men of Washington who transformed that vision into reality.
An excellent book on civil rights and politics

Having grown up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where Hubert Humphrey is remembered and revered, and then living in Atlanta, Georgia for 14 years, the land of Martin Luther King and Richard Russell (and the region of LBJ), I was very intrigued by the subject of this book. I also found it refreshingly evenhanded, yet an intimate and personal view into one of the most important periods of American history, written about a subject that not only is in the forefront of out collective attention, but has been so since before our nation was founded. Not only that, it was a good read, with as much excitement and plot twists as the latest from Grisham.
If you are at all interested in Civil Rights, or you just like reading about politics, this is a very good place to start.

The Walls of Jericho offers a riveting, close-up and personal review of the political struggles of the Civil Rights movement, seen through the eyes of three is its major protagonists. Author Robert Mann carries us to know and understand southerner, racist Richard Russell, southerner human rights supporter Lyndon Johnson, and northerner firebrand liberal Hubert Humphrey. We agree with them, or disagree with them, Mann allows us to understand where they are coming from. In the end, they are good men trying to do good things, as they see them to be good. I was emotionally struck in reading about the personal, political, and social interplay.

I just finished reading A Cure For All, and I must commend Mr. Johnson on his outstanding novel. Once I started reading this book, I simply couldn't put it down. It starts with the mysterious death of a research scientist, and suddenly, the private detective who is investigating the case becomes almost a victim himself. Suddenly, no one in his inner circle is safe.
An interesting subject, fast-paced action and an unfolding mystery held my interest from the first page through the epilogue!!

A lot of books claim to be hard to put down, but this effort by first-time author Johnson is the real deal. Wisecracking former cop Jefferson Stewart III encounters a sniper situation on the first page and the action never lets up from there. Stewart soon finds himself in the middle of a conspiracy surrounding the discovery of a cancer cure and the powers-that-be who are trying to suppress it. Why anyone would want to suppress such a cure is convincingly argued in this thought-provoking novel, but the real attraction here is the unlikely partnership between Stewart and his friend Tyrone, a small-time DC drug seller. Watching the witty chemistry develop between these two is worth the price of admission.
There are some satisfyingly violent moments when Stewart calls in some favors from some old military friends. The surprise ending rounds out this very good read.
This ain't Tolstoy, but it sure moves a heck of a lot faster. If Johnson ever gets around to writing about these guys again, I for one will greet them as old friends.

Grace under Fire by Charlotte Russell Johnson will show you first hand how to make any homegoing a celebration of life. A funeral should be a time for a family to bond. Planning a funeral is very complicated. It involves a great deal of coordination and organization at a time when you are probably not feeling very organized. Surviving the death of a loved one is very difficult. You experience so many emotions including anger, death, sadness, remorse, and even relief if the loved one was suffering. Now add additional family problems to the equation and you will need to experience Grace from God while under Fire. Ms. Johnson does not demean the experience, but rather offers humor as a way of relieve the pain. Even the Bible says, "Laughter doeth good like a medicine Every funeral should be a celebration of life. This book changed my life and view of death.

Charlotte Johnson is a very talented author. She is able to capture the very essence of the tremendous triad of being African-American, female, and southern. The richness of her writings leans the reader into envisioning that they are sharing in each experience. This book is thought provoking, ensightful, and a much needed analysis of life long love, forgiveness, infidelity, passion, and the search for the perfect union and soulmate. I was hooked on the book after reading the Introducton on page 13. My desire is that every one that I know has an opportunity to experience life through the eyes of Charlotte Russell Johnson.
I have read each of Ms. Johnson's book. She is able to touch her readers in a very intimate way. Initially, I thought the book was about grief and then half way through the book it surprised me. Every reader can identify with being overwhelmed and pressured to make a life altering decision
I started reading this book in the beauty shop. I was so excited that I audibly exclaimed 'oh'. I wish Oprah would have a book this exciting on her show instead of some of her recent books. It was easy for me to see the main characters dilemna. I thing everyone has had to make a choice to trust and love or embrace loneliness. After reading the book, I was forced to ask myself some questions about my own romantic life.

This is an extraordinary work, and it is great to see it in paperback. The pictures of Lake Manasarovar itself make it worth purchasing. It pictures a place on this planet where the spiritual, what by some might be referred to as weird, or totally otherworldy, imbues the whole atmosphere. A landscape like no other on earth. Mt. Kailas has been a pilgrimage destination for Hindus, Bon-pos, and Buddhists for centuries, and this book is a must for anyone considering such a journey themselves. For those who grew up reading The Way of the White Clouds by Lama Govinda , or The Sacred Mountain, by John Snelling, this work beautifully sums up Mt. Kailas within the context of the late 20th century, and is illuminating for those who dream of someday attempting to undertake their own pilgrimage in the 21st. Very insightful and wonderful for armchair travelers also. An excellent effort.

Poor Fathers who can't budge

Review Date: 2002-04-06
Among the saddest consequence are the couples who realize that a marriage doesn't work, and both feel trapped due to the recognition that society expects both to manage children born to them from birth to adulthood. In increasingly expensive societies, the ability to do this has become harder forcing the system into a social nightmare and crisis often resulting in domestic violence, broken hearts and broken dreams for everyone. Mothers cannot afford to live alone and raise children; fathers are financially strapped to despair, and children suffer the consequences of both, often none being able to maintain a decent quality of lifestyle configured to expect that it is justifiable to live in that condition for so many years. Multiple jobs worked can only go so far in easing the situation. Addressing these sometimes hidden needs is important in a nation where divorce is sky high, and housing is at the top of the list. For these desperate families, there must be an answer, but it is unlikely to come without serious consideration of affordable housing options. Like women, men often refuse to consider group housing after being married wishing to maintain their autonomy and independence. It's conceivable that this assumption needs to be reexamined for its practicality. Perhaps, in addressing those issues, children can be cared for, and both women and men can achieve more successful divorces while still maintaining a reasonable attitude toward relationships and life. The alternative, of course, is to continue to sacrifice precious hours that could best be spent with offspring, or in activities that are more enjoyable, rather than continuing in unhappy relationships where not budging is the only option.
