A neglected masterpieceReview Date: 2000-05-07
His "Reminiscences" show Carlyle as he was in his heart of hearts. His childhood was repressive, his early career a disappointment and his marriage to the witty Jane Welsh a mismatch if ever there was one. But nothing could stop this man who felt that he had something to tell and would tell it at no matter what cost to himself and others.
Readers of his wonderful "French Revolution" and stirring "On Heroes and Hero Worship" know that Carlyle did find his public voice and made it heard loud and clear. But the "Reminiscences" let us hear, for almost the first time, his private voice. His memories of his parents, his anguished cry of guilt and longing sent after the, now dead, Jane Welsh Carlyle are deeply moving sometimes painful exposures of the soul of this man who was not used to public displays of affection.
If you miss this book you can never learn to love and respect Carlyle nor even understand him as he deserves to be understood.

How to Advertise ? Internet Marketing is the amazing way !Review Date: 2004-06-27
Internet marketing with major search engines in USA and/or UK markets.
After the rapid growth of " Google " - Yahoo and MSN need to find the ways to protect their market shares. Therefore, we can gain the beneficiaries from them during the search fights in June 2004. No doubts, Search Engines Marketing is the amazing way to promote your brand and/or products when you facing the globalization and e-business in the coming decade.
Of course, you need to learn and study more search engines (PPC, P4P Programs) in both markets of USA or UK.
Actually, US$25.00 is the small amount to start your programs in the trial status. e.g. Findwhat, Goclick, Looksmart, Lycos, Mirago,...etc. If you want to make easy way, suggest to try on Overture site match!
If you have much funds on your internet marketing, you can try more programs as Google, Overture, Kanoodle, Enhance (ah-ha),. eSpotting,...etc.
Try to step into the SEO / ROI marketing in time now.
Hope to have more success after your business promotion in global markets.

2006 July, Now the search engines market is changed.
There have only Google (42%), Yahoo (28%), MSN (13%), AOL (7%) and Ask (5%) Search Networks in the upper market. But there still have the small companies are working: MIVA and Kanoodle.
Of course, market shares are higher, but quality visitors are lower. Quality Clicks are very importance for every advertiser, so Yahoo and Google must find the ways to catch the quality visitors in every seconds and hours.
Re: Local searches for Yahoo / Google - it still have the good future and development in Hong Kong. Actually, there have many advertisers in Hong Kong or from Mainland China.
Baidu, Alibaba, Sina and Sohu are mainly concerns in Local China only. No doubts, there have many B2B sites or portals for helping the SME Business on promotion in the very different ways on marketing. e.g. exhibitions or online helps.
As you see that PCCW and NWT - are quiet aggressive on their business promotions on Yahoo HK and MSN HK.
--------
For SME Business - if you want to save the costs, you can DIY your advertisement directly.... Even Google HK or Yahoo HK.

A job very well doneReview Date: 2005-03-02
I also appreciated the last chapter on the various residences that are still about and plan to bring our copy to the neighborhood so that I might be able to spot more of them. Her comments on the various businesses in Madison Park were also very interesting to read.

The book itself was compiled over many years with extensive research by both Jane, Norton, and many close friends. It was painstakingly typed by hand for the publisher, one letter at a time, by the late Irving Norton Hutchinson, Jr. (1923-2005). Norton is also credited with the identification numbering system used throughout the book allowing for instant tracing of family lines and identifying relationships between those listed in the book. The painstaking part comes from the many corrections required because Jane is in fact a perfectionist when it comes to spelling and use of the language.
An interesting departure is that Jane felt it extremely important to follow the female family lines as far as possible during the research. Those lines are published in the book as well. A name listing of the major female lines includes Boisseali, Case, Conklin, Conkling, Davids, Davis, Floyd, Floyd-Jones, Horton, Landon, Moore, Milford, Nicoll, Randall, Terry, and Tuthill.
Throughout the book are illustrations including property documents, family crests, drawings, and a number of family photographs. The typesetting is typical of Gateway Publishers books of that era and not what you would find in your basic paperback novel of today, but it is clear and readable.
One of the most interesting things that I found about this book is it went far beyond my expectation of what a genealogy book might include. Yes, there is a high percentage of pages with just names, places, and dates -- but there is a health dose of exactly how the research was done, tips on effective research, and extensive documentation of the lives of many of the first through fifth generation key individuals. Eleven generations are present.
The book includes a thumbnail history of Southold Long Island, an index, a full bibliography, an appendix of the Patriots of the Revolution, an appendix of place name changes, and an appendix of 'other' Hutchinsons names that simply could not be tied directly to the trees being covered.
When the author's research was in conflict with other published research, a full explanation of the differences between that source and her research is included, as well as her reasoning for connecting that individual in conflict with this prior source(s).
Overall, it is a very interesting read for those who want to learn a little about genealogy, how research was done "before the Internet", the importance of thorough documentation when researching, and a view of places on Long Island from days gone by. I don't guess I have to mention that if you are doing research on any of the many families covered here that it might also provide a vital well documented link to your own research.
I would have given the book a rating of 4 simply because of the simple font used in typesetting being less 'easy' to read than books of our current time, but after having spent time in the book, the font used is well overcome by the flavor it provides as I read and re-read about times past... in a publishing style prevalent in self published books of that era.
The author is still among us for hopefully a few more years, but with failing health due to age and perhaps even the loss of her beloved Norton. Her work here though will live forever.
