Southern Charm At Its Best

Review Date: 2002-12-28
After having read this book, it was the perfect introduction the Southern Architecture and Decorative arts prior to actually seeing Charleston face-to-face. Mr. Savage gave lecturers on this very topic in my classes as well as site, which had been complimented by his book. It is artfully written and with care describes the details often ignored by many travel writers, art historians and even restorers! One almost feels as if they can hear the author reading it aloud. Bravo.

This really is a beautiful book, especially for someone who's not familiar with Charleston. Most of the photographs are wonderful, with a lot of detail not seen in other books about Charleston. I'm probably spoiled, but I could have used about 40 more pages...but when you're talking about Charleston, a 5000 page book wouldn't be enough. Really a wonderful book to add to any Charleston collection.

FIVE STAR DINING IN YOUR OWN HOME

Review Date: 2004-06-16
Having dined at The Old Post Office Restaurant on many occassions, I was thrilled to discover that Chef Philip Bardin has put some of his culinary creations to pen and paper for all of us to try at home. I'm blessed to live in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, near The Old Post Office Restaurant, and therefore I have access to some of the same sources of fresh produce, fresh seafood, and quality meats and poultry that the restaurant does. Chef Bardin emphasizes that you have to start with quality ingredients like they use in the restaurant to achieve the best results. With my already having access to quality ingredients, this book provides the final piece of the puzzle and allows me, and my friends, to create some of the same dishes we crave at The Old Post Office Restaurant. This book also provides a wonderful glimpse of our local culture on and around Edisto Island, South Carolina. Living near Edisto Island, I can say that the book gets it right when talking about the local culture, and if you're not from this area the book does an excellent job of introducing you to our wonderful, unique, paradise. If you don't think you'd enjoy the taste of "The Lowcountry" then you haven't tried our food or you haven't been able to try it done right. This book from Chef Bardin of The Old Post Office Restaurant will help you do do southern food right.

History brought to life

Review Date: 2006-04-30
The world of pre-Elizabethan England is vivid and engaging in this tale of one girl caught up in life-and-death circumstances created by power struggles she'd known little of before. Though captive to the dire situation in which she finds herself, Iris's sense of agency keeps her from succumbing to the forces that would seek to destroy her or simply use her as a decoy. She is cunning, smart and appealing and I was compelled to keep turning the page, as I cared about her fate. A highly enjoyable way to learn more about England's somewhat confusing royal history.

Girl as spy

I loved this fast-paced tale of a young girl in just-pre-Elizabethan England. From the moment this book starts, danger and intrigue follow Iris, daughter of a nobleman who is caught up in the power struggles to gain the throne of England. Reluctantly recruited to portray the Princess Elizabeth so the princess may remain safe, Iris is pulled into the court and finds the life distasteful. She wants to be at home with the people on her parents' estate, living life in the country, and instead she must risk her life for a young woman who is destined to be the Queen of England. Grounded in history, with plenty of action and humor and a touch of romance, this is a terrific choice for the tween girls in your life.

It was a simple ordinary day for Cass Kennedy when his family was forced to move to North Minnesota. He never wished to be alive. His new house was very nice. He really liked that it snowed there everyday, and he missed school a lot. Cass loved to visit Lake Superior often. Cass loved to play football near the lake. His house was close to a forest, and the forest was called Indian Deep. One day Cass went into the forest, and he heard strange sounds. He saw a boat's emergency lights on. What could he do with his dog in the middle of a blizzard, and he was the only one around to help the survivors? This book was an exciting and thrilling adventure. You should buy this book.

A boy experiences struggles and successes in his new home.

Cass Kennedy is used to the fast pace of Minneapolis. When his family moves the North Shore of Lake Superior, many transitions ensue. He no longer has the time he would like with his dad, all of his friends are far away, and the class leader/bully, Ansel, picks on him but never gets caught. A shared love for a secret hideaway and a crisis bring the two boys together. Cass and Ansel realize that they have more in common than they realized. This is a great story for children on the move. The transitions experienced are dealt with in a realistic manner. The boy's feelings of abandonment by his father and his subsequent hiding from his family is typical of how many children retreat into themselves during times of change and stress. Whether a read-a-loud or read-alone, this quality book is highly recommended for children 8-13, boys and girls alike. The timeless cycle of chaos, confusion, and lonliness during a move is realistically depicted in this book.

This book is still being recommended by number of institutions in Pakistan, and undoubtedly they are right to recommend it since it is the best ever written book on Business Communication. But the publisher has neither introduced a newer edition nor reprint the same. I had the most difficulty to find this book. I do recommend this book if one finds it somewhere in a used book store.

The book was so well written, that an undergraduate, such as myself, understood it with complete clearity. The cases that were chosen to reinforce the ideas were fantastic. I'm sort of an armchair forensic anthropologist, but this book helped to clearly identify the role of the anthropologist in the law enforcement field in the United States. The book is outdated, but ahead of its time at publishing.

I read this today and I completely agree. This is a great resource and should be used by everyone involved with keeping our children safe.

"The Jane's School Safety Handbook is one of the finest resource guides available on safe school planning, and it will be a catalyst for schools meeting the mandate of California Senate Bill #187--The Safe School Planning Process. We are putting them in every school in the Los Angeles Unified School District."

Safety Handbook is tops!

The Jane's School Safety Handbook is a MUST for anyone interested in school safety. There is a wealth of practical, easy to understand information packed into this small book. Written by some of the best national experts in the field, this comprehensive book outlines what to do -- from planning to recovery, and includes many helpful checklists and sample letters.

A unique feature of this handbook is a section of case studies that clearly demonstrate that a crisis can happen to anyone. These real-life experiences "highlight the limitations of profiling and the importance of comprehensive crisis planning, prevention, response and recovery plans." As a school distict crisis-responder, I found this book to be most helpful. It is appropriate for both beginners and those experienced in crisis/emergency response. Don't wait for a crisis to happen before you read this book.

A wonderful novel
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-17
This is a book you can lose yourself in, never mind any "notorious" tag due to its being one of the three versions of Lady Chatterley's Lover. This "second draft" is actually much better than the final version. I didn't find it mawkish at all. It's about tenderness so maybe that's why the other reviewer thought it "mawkish". Don't look for sensationalism here, this novel is about how two people from different worlds fall in love. It's really superb.

This brilliant version is a novel in its own right.

Review Date: 1999-06-29
One of the most fascinating things about picking up a book is being able to immerse oneself in the author's world. If the book is a success, one inevitably wonders where such genius comes from, how it develops. Part of the pleasure of reading John Thomas and Lady Jane is, therefore, the way it allows us to glimpse the writer's creative process in the second of three distinct stages in the formation of the idea of Lady Chatterley's Lover. It also allows us to see how D.H. Lawrence develops the various themes he returns to again and again in his works: overcoming class barriers, discovering sensuality and passion--in the true, deep senses of the words--and struggling against the brutally mechanical, cold world of modern day life. Yet the attractions of this novel are not limited to the rather academic analyses of how he gets from the rough first version to the final version of his notorious novel, Lady Chatterley's Lover. Though the plot is roughly developed in some places, almost mawkishly sentimental in others, John Thomas and Lady Jane is truly a pleasure to read for those seeking reaffirmation of the fact that tenderness and compassion still exist in this world, and that regardless of where, when and whom, it is always possible for us to find a way of living that truly expresses and embodies who we really are.

A European "Bélle Epoque"Encyclopedia
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-18
This novel works like a huge and beautiful testimony of the years before the Great War in Europe. It transcends the limits of the genre and becomes a great Encyclopedia full of fascinating characters, archetypes and allegories. The intelectual battle between Naphta and Settembrini (the religious and social view between the liberal and individualistic perspective) is, maybe, the most perfect chronicle of a philosophical and political controversy that hasn't end yet.
At the end we all scream with the chilling scene of the duel and cry with Hans Castorp`s fate.

My three year old loves this book! It's his favorite bedtime story and he looks forward to sitting on daddy's lap and having this story read to him. The watercolor illustrations evoke the thoughtful story line of a little boy, his favorite toy, and an elderly/magic great-grandmother. Highly recommended!!!
