In 1876 Jesse James and Cole Younger came to Minnesota to rob a bank. Cole Younger and his two brothers ended up in prison, with Jesse and his brother, Frank, fleeing for their lives. Three other members of the gang were even less fortunate, being left in the dirt, very dead. John Koblas's book explores all the reported sightings of members of the gang both before and after the disastrous attempted robbery of the bank in Northfield. Along the way, an interesting snapshot of southeastern Minnesota in 1876 is presented, giving a good feel for the people and the world they lived in. The research going into this book is very impressive, resulting in a book which is plain fun to browse through.

There is no way in the world anyone has actually FOUND this book, let alone read it, so if you've stumbled upon this entry, post something, leave a marker if you will. Because for those in the know, that's what this is all about. There is an entire alternative sub-culture dealing with post-Civil War confederacy and hidden gold, clues and markers in rural areas, and something called Knights of the Circle (or something like that). This book, much of it as I understand it, wrong, deals with the conjecture that there really wasn't a "Jesse James." That was merely a nom-de-crime of a number of southern sympathiser (sp?) criminals. Possibly interesting stuff, but I'll wait for the one hour History Channel show.

++++Robinson does a splendid job bringing to life the real story of the outlaw Jesse James. Although intended for young readers, it also appealed to at least one aging adult- me!

Mr Epperson has done it again! The author of THE UNSEEN HAND, THE NEW WORLD ORDER and MASONRY CONSPIRACY AGAINST CHRISTIANITY, has put together another great book, this time about the legendary outlaw JESSE JAMES. Mr Epperson does a very nice job of showing the reader how Jesse James staged his death in 1882 and went on to live under the alias WILLIAM ANDREWS CLARK and later, in 1948, showed up in the city of Lawton, Oklahoma under the name of J. Frank Dalton at the age of 103, claiming to be none other than the REAL JESSE JAMES HIMSELF. This book is must reading for anyone who is interested in US History, The Old West, Freemasonry, The Civil War and intriguing conspiracies. Ive read all of Mr Epperson's books and this one is one of his best!

I Homeschool our two youngest children, ages 7yr & 11yr. So when we studied the West we had to stop and take a look at the so-called heroes and infamous men & women of the West. The "Best of the West Biographies" are by far the BEST! There is so much information packed into this 41 pg. book. It is divided into 6 chapters and has a "Timeline" and "Words to Know", in the back. My husbnd, who hates to read, has read every one of them. Elaine Landau gives you the facts with the rumors. The pictures are great also. I highly recommend this series for anyone studying the old west, or just curious about getting their facts straight.

I would have to give this book a 5 star. As you see, Carl W. Breihan is my father and I have a copy with images of all his books he has written about Jesse and Frank James and the old west. I also have pictures of my dad on the back cover of his jackets. I also have a barber chair that Frank James had his hair cut and shave. His signature is on the bottom of the seat. This is the funniest western I've ever read! My favorite along with Lonesome Dove. I love his country sayings. I laughed out loud and was sorry that the book ended. Didn't know this book existed until I stumbled onto it in a library. A Lewis book is like a John Wayne movie, based on history, spurred with suspense and spiced with humor. The perfect formula for any book. I'd love to have the Lomax set! Why are they out of print???

I can't say enough how much I enjoyed this book! I'm always telling people that Sandra Bullock should do a film on this book and play the main character - Nicole Ryan. I just didn't know who to trust in it - who was the good guy or the bad guy. And the end...well you have got to check this one out for yourself. But, make sure to make an appointment to get your nails re-done afterwards. I bit all of mine off! Will someone make a movie out of this one? Please. :-)

This is a long, long poem that first surfaced in the 1970s in Reno, Nevada. The author, Paul J. Lyon, gave a series of readings with a group of poets and the series was called "Panama Beaver Readings." The chapbook here may be either one published in 1976 ("Limp Leather Edition") or one from 1993 ("Lyon's Cheap Library"). The poetry is unlike anything you might be expecting, and is very humorous, a sort of combination Walt Whitman and Kurt Vonnegut. It tells the saga of Jesse James as he travels around the Wild West trapped between time periods and moral questions. The poet kept claiming that the whole work was over a thousand pages long; every public reading was of an entirely different chapter. The published part contains only the first few chapters. Lyon also gave readings in New Mexico, Arizona, Washington (state), and California, and yet the fate of the work itself remains a mystery. The poetry that he did publish is about the best poetry you will ever read. No other parts of the epic were ever published.
