I highly recommend this book. It was so well written and fun to read I read it in one sitting. Iamblichus writes like your right there with Pythagoras following him in his travels and hearing his teachings in person. This book is almost written similarly to "Footprints of Gautama the Buddha" in that you feel your there with him. I would recommend anyone interested in a fun, informing, and great read to buy this book.

Exoteric Manual of Theurgy receives a much needed updating

Before this English translation of Iamblichus' only surviving defense of theurgy, scholars and those few others, curious about such matters had only Taylors' version to refer to. (While I am aware of A. Wilders' translation it suffers from far too many errors to be of much real value). Now Clarke, Dillon, and Hershbell have gifted us with what is sure to be the standard for years to come. That is not to say that Thomas Taylor was not a super-Damion among men. His translation no doubt will remain for years. This due to the fact that Taylor truly understood Theurgy as few other scholars.
So why the need for a new critical translation? Besides the fact that more extant manuscripts were examined than ever before in its preparation, this is a near transparent reading of Iamblichus' intent with clarity and fidelity. Unlike Proclus and many other Platonic fathers, Iamblichus according to Eunapius did not possessed a silver tongue. His writing is at times both tortured and unconventional. Somehow our current team has managed to negotiate many of the traditional Iamblichean hurdles.
The De Mysteriis is a brief examination of noetic or abiding principles of the soul together with proceeding and returning principles. Add to this that based upon the the focused questions from Porphyry, Iamblichus takes on some of the more difficult questions left unanswered by Plotinus. Questions such as the descent of the soul; whether or not the charioteer or One of soul remains undescended. In adddition Iamblichus deals with material sacrifice and its relation to the unmovable Gods, appearances of sound and light and their relation to the quale of beingness, epopteia and the art of Telestai. All these thorny questions and still more Iamblichus tackles in De Mysteriis.
An absolute must for all Scholarch-mystae!

The Firm launched John Grisham to superstar status as the world's favorite debunker of the legal profession. The Firm perfectly casts the way that high-potential law students are wined, dined, and bribed into taking sweat shop jobs that ruin their lives. But like all good novels, that's just the beginning of the story. How does a small-to-medium-sized Memphis firm outbid the Wall Street boys? Therein lies a good tale.
The Firm is appealing because it takes you inside the world of exclusive, top-drawer law firms and reveals the temptations that lie there awaiting the unsuspecting young lawyer. John Grisham makes much of the detail highly accurate while also taking you on a fantasy trip that no one has taken before. The scope of his imagination about "what if" a law firm yielded to temptation is breathtaking. I could have daydreamed for 400 years and never come up with a tale like this one.
Unlike most thrillers, this one had me turning pages eagerly right up to the last page. It was truly an exciting experience for this Harvard Law School graduate.

The Firm
Story: 4 out of 5 stars
Abridged: No
Quality of narration: 4 stars
Reader's range of character voices: 2 stars
Pros: I have read the book and listened to the audiobook, both versions are unputdownable. As for the audiobook narration, Scott Brick's voice is warm and listenable. His delivery is clearly enunciated and pitched so you don't have to keep changing volume to hear what's being said.
Cons: Brick does an excellent job on New York and Long Island accents (check out his reading of Nelson DeMille's John Corey series), but "The Firm" takes place in the Deep South and his southern accents are weak to non-existent. Also, he doesn't do much with female voices other than soften his voice slightly.

This thrilling and exhilarating Grisham novel starts out and explains the normal occurrences of a lawyer fresh out of law school. The long nights and hard work seem to have brought Mitch McDeere exactly what he wanted, a warm climate, a BMW, and a mortgage to a house for himself and his wife. He soon realized after two deaths his first day on the job that the firm was not a safe place to be. After being approached by the FBI I was always curious as to whether he would follow the same path as the former associates who were recently killed or take the greedy path and stick with the money. The ability of Grisham to tell the story from many points of view and keep the most important details hidden till the very end was key to keeping interest in the novel. The escape of Mitch from the firm was somewhat suspicious and his ability to get access to all of the files is somewhat hard to believe but still made for a good read. From the start of the novel I could not put it down and was always enticed by the next twist or turn that would come.

Plum lawyer job not so good after all.
When a hotshot young lawyer is enticed to work for a famous firm he discovers after a while that they really aren't very nice, and not something he wants to be a part of.
Then you get a mystery/thriller with chases, etc., but rather than spy or cop or military hero, you have a legal one.
That wasn't particularly interesting to me, so I never bothered with another Grisham.

I enjoyed the change of pace from Grisham's normal books, but like a lot of other reviewers, I didn't think it was believable that Luke was a 7-year-old, and that it ended sort of abruptly with seemingly no resolution of anything. The story seemed to be building up to a climax that never happened. While I did enjoy reading about life in rural Arkansas in the '50s, I just felt so let down at the end. I also thought that Tally, the teenage daughter of the Spruills, got a little too much enjoyment out of little Luke watching her bathe. Comments such as "You liked that didn't you?" and "Maybe I'll let you watch me again." seemed a bit disturbing for a 17-year-old girl to be saying to a 7-year-old boy.

After seing so many positive reviews i deceided to give this book a try. I must say it was interesting especially for a big city girl like me. I truely didnt know anything about farming and thought this would be real boring but to my surprise it wasnt.
Its very well written Luke, the 7 year old kid knows a lot of secrets and i can see that happening in real life as grown ups tend to trust kids with their secrets more than anyone else for some reason. I could also see myself telling a kid secrets...lol
I didnt like the end so I have to subtract 2 stars. WHere was the plot? Nothing really happened. I dont know why it was titled "the painted house", it should have been more the likely "The mysteries farm" or something. Maybe i missed something i dont know how some people see this book as one of the best books they ever read.
Its okay to read but dont expect too much.

Wow, Grisham blew me away with his ability to write a novel that didn't involve an attorney (or two) and a court room. This book transports you into The South and guides you to imagine what it would be like to experience the story in person. It was very well written and has a compelling storyline. I couldn't put it down until I was finished and I have passed this along to several friends and family members.

I absolutely loved this book. It was a modern day "to kill a mockingbird."
I enjoy most of Grisham's work and even though I bought this book it sat on my shelf for almost a year. I don't really care about legal thrillers, but I was so use to that being his genre that I didn't really know what to think of this books premise.
But once I opened it I was grabbed from the first page and was completely immersed the way I really good book suck you in. I finished it in one day and have re-read it several times and recommended it to all my friends.
Single more enjoyable novel I have ever read.

I brought this book to study for the PHR exam and to have as a resource. I self-studied for the exam with this book and the PHR/SPHR Professional in Human Resources Certification. I recommend them both. It is laid out really well - with good charts, examples, and listing many websites to use for resources. I also like that the terms and definitions were listed in bold on this side of the pages. It is a good resource to have at the office.

This latest edition continues the trend, pace, and level of excellence since its inception. It is a perfect reference source and deals with the theoretical as well as real world situations. All companies can benefit from its practical applications whether they are start-ups or major corporations.

There's a reason this book is a standard in the field. It explains both fact and theory, in just enough depth, to support HR generalist efforts. The current edition -- for those of us who haven't seen the inside of a school for quite a few years -- features on-line resources that are particularly useful in work situations. Call it a textbook for OJT.

Written by a man who was close to Jackson, but published over 75 years after the fact, this account may or may not be totally factual. Nevertheless, even if it contains a modicum of BS, it is still first-hand BS, and to me this is so much more interesting than accepting someone's perhaps biased "interpretation" of the same events well over a century later.

"I Rode with Stonewall" is one of the finest personal narratives of the Civil War, America's most decisive and costly conflict. The author, Henry Kyd Douglas, began writing this memoir soon after the conclusion of the war, but put it aside for more than thirty years while he practiced law and raised a family. At his death, his book about the war had not been edited and it wasn't until a descendent discovered the transcript and found a publisher that it was finally released in 1940, on the even of another great martial struggle. I purchased my first copy on a visit to the Fredericksburg battlefield more than twenty years ago and after reading most of it on a flight back from Washington D.C. to California, left it on the plane and in the days before the Internet, it was hard to secure another. Fortunately, on another tour of Civil War battlefields and museums, I managed to bring a copy back for my library - it's that memorable a book. Henry Kyd Douglas was a native of Maryland and a dashing young officer who served on Stonewall Jackson's staff in the early stages of the Civil War. And, like many other Confederate officers and enlisted men, he was devoted to the stern, brilliant artilleryman. Douglas later had a field command and despite being wounded no less than six times, he survived four years of brutal war. Unfortunately, other young heroes of the Confederacy, friends of Douglas like John Pegram, Sandy Pendleton and John Pelham did not. Douglas was handsome, dashing, brave and outgoing and because of these qualities, he was popular with officers on both sides in the war and a favorite of the Southern belles. His account is peppered with fond encounters, but always chivalrous, he abbreviates the names of the women he flirted with. Although the book is full of death, of lives lost in the ill-fated cause of the Confederacy and the abominable institution of slavery, it also shows that there was an idealistic and romantic side to the war. Even in the service of a bad cause, the terrible conflict between North and South brought out the deeper qualities of the men that served. Jeffrey Morseburg

I read this book in 1979, and would rate it highly as a good read.
However, I was disappointed a few years ago to learn that the entire thing is a fabrication, a string of lies from beginning to end.
A lot of men lie about their military service. Apparently Douglas was one of the more flagrant exemplers.
Unfortunately, I can't back up what I'm saying. I have no source. I forget where I read it.
While re-reading a passage in Shelby Foote's narrative history, I came across the account of Stonewall sitting on the fence, eating the lemon. Douglas is, I believe, the main, if not the only source for the "Lemon Legend."
I wondered to myself, "Now where did I read that Douglas's memoir was an utter fabrication? I'll check the Amazon reviews; surely someone will have debunked this book."
So here I am. My only point is, don't believe me or Douglas.
Let the Reader Beware.
Can anyone shed some light on this?

This book, first published in 1940 - long after Douglas' death - is based on Douglas' war-time journal and personal papers. Douglas began to assemble them into book form several times, but never had them published; his relatives did......What emerges are wonderful portraits of Douglas, Jackson (for whom Douglas was a staff officer) and many other well-known (and not so well-known) soldiers and civilians caught in the Civil War. Douglas is decidedly pro-Jackson, but Douglas also shows us the real Jackson: a man who could be cruel to the extreme and then gentle and kind a few moments later. The book is fill with humorous anecdotes, which make it a "fun read" - I could not put it down. Yet there is an underlying sadness in the book, as one watches Douglas' many friends being killed off, sees the homes of his family and civilian friends burned or otherwise destroyed. Douglas never explicitly states it, but the reader can feel the anguish that Douglas - and many others - experienced....... One thing Douglas did not do was go into great detail about each battle. He reasoned that later historians, with a better overall view of things, would do a much better job. What he does do is "put you there" - whether in battle, in camp, or on some small adventure. This is one fantastic book! Along with the memoirs of Gen. E.P. Alexander, these memoirs are about the best I have ever read. Simply a great book!
