Top quality reading for spiritual growth

I love this book! Stanford is master of the victorious living approach to spiritual growth. His understanding of our position in Christ based on the key New Testament passages in Romans 5-8, Col. 3, and parallels closely matches my own work on Romans in Walking in Victory: Overcoming Sin and Legalism through Your New Identity in Christ, or How to Experience Your Relationship with God as the Apostle Paul Teaches in Romans 5-8.

The green letters stress lerning to view ourselves as God views us. Until we see ourselves in Christ only, we will never be able to say with Paul, "no longer I but Christ." This book will give readers a new lease on life through a deeper understanding of grace.

The "New Creation" Christian Life

Having been a born-again "new creation" (II Cor. 5:17) in Christ for over 40 years, in addition to having done undergraduate and graduate work in Bible and theology, I can say this book by Miles Stanford is the best thing I have ever studied on the Christian life (other than Paul the Apostle himself!). Miles was a dear friend and personal mentor to me before his death in 1999. I spent my first 30 years in Covenant Theology and its "law as a rule of life" teaching which not only robbed me from true fellowship with God's Son, but almost destroyed my walk with Him altogether. God in His mercy sent Miles my way, and I have been walking with the Lord Jesus in a new and wonderful way for the passed 10 years. Be sure to understand Miles' teaching before criticizing him. Check out "withChrist.org" website for a storehouse of food for the "inner man". Miles' website is also there!
If you approach this with a prayerful spirit, you cannot help but be continually enriched through what you find in Mr. Stanford's books as well as the aforementioned website. Some of his statements may shock some Christians, but again, BE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND ALL THAT HE IS SAYING BEFORE CRITICIZING HIM UNFAIRLY. Miles is now ACTUALLY where he has always been POSITIONALLY ... "seated in the heavenlies in Christ".

A must for anyone who ever doubts their salvation.

Well worth the read. All of us at some time or other has doubts, questions and needs to be strengthened in their knowledge of the finished work of the cross. This book makes great strides in those directions.

Good book, but a little long and repetitive.

This book makes good use of scripture and presents a very Biblical message. There are a lot of great insights and this book can be a great blessing to many.

The major problem with this book is that it is really five books that have been put into one volume. This makes it longer than most modern readers are willing to read. It also gets very repetitive. By the end of the third book, I was finding very little new material. The later books just repackage the previous ones. If you have to finish books that you start (like me) then you may not want to start this book. The last half sort of drags down the greatness of the first half.

For those looking for a similiar, but more readable book, I would recommend "TrueFaced".

The binding on my paperback copy also fell apart half-way through the book. While I found some of the writing less than crisp and the organization sometimes left me confused as to sequences of events, overall it's a wonderfully detailed history of how a great house came to be. I wish I had read it before I visited Fallingwater; it would have greatly increased my enjoyment of the house.

I have now read FALLINGWATER RISING twice, and I think it is one of the most well-written, readable, and engrossing books about any subject. What I like most about it is that even though Fallingwater is an inanimate object, we feel that it is a living thing; this is our emotional response to it. This book makes it clear that people made the building happen. People with all of their strengths, foibles, desires and aspirations. Each of these people come to life on the page, and Toker's delightful spirit of inquiry illuminates the writing and makes it sing.

Fallingwater remains mysterious even after this comprehensive book

Every "thing" you could ever want to know about Fallingwater is contained in this book -- and then some. It is an enjoyable, insightful book about an extraordinary house. The writing is convincing, intelligent and clear, covering a wide range of complex and contentious topics without ever seeming either simplistic or academic. For my tastes there was too much detail on some peripheral subjects -- such as Ayn Rand's book The Fountainhead and the PR campaigns relating to Fallingwater. I didn't really need to be given lists of all the doo dads and art objects that were put on various walls and shelves at one time or another, but some of these matters are easily skimmed over. Despite its encyclopedic scope and thorough research and analysis, the book ironically fails to really get at the essence of the creative process that resulted in Fallingwater -- especially the contributions of EJ Kaufmann. How is it that EJ Kaufmann built Fallingwater and the Palm Springs Nuetra house -- two of the most extraordinary houses of the 20th century? In the end the essential mystery of Fallingwater remains.

I must say that as an architect who has been practicing for over 25 years, I have not read any book quite like this before that reaches so deeply into the creation of a master work such as Fallingwater. I have always "appreciated" FLW work but only recently have more fully understood what he has accomplished and created in built architectural works that to me borders on magical and genius at the same time. The glossy pictures alone only begins to reflect him as the gifted craftsman he represented. Living in Chicago I get to enjoy much of his work all the time. I'm still enjoying the book and must say your work here is amazing and a fitting tribute to an increbible individual and architect. Thanks for the experience. Jack Svaicer

One of the best works on Wright's work, but...

I would give this four stars based on its intellectual content. The reason I only gave it two stars is because the trade paperback, which lists for $25.00, fell apart in my hands before I was halfway through the book. The entire first half popped out of the binding. By the time I finished the text of the second half, it too was on its way to popping out. This is unacceptable.

The book is quite good, telling us more than I at least ever thought to ask about America's most famous private house of the twentieth century. There is a good chapter on Wright, especially the fallow years leading up to this commission; there is also a very interesting chapter on Edgar Kaufmann who commissioned the house; and an interesting chapter on his son who later claimed a much larger role in its creation than Toker thinks correct. The travails of building the house and the work necessary to correct its serious defects years later are all covered. Also covered is the publicity mechanism that made the house famous. I would recommend this to anybody, not just to Wright's fans. And, if you have not been there, make plans to visit Fallingwater; the trip is worth it.

Practical Primer for Avoiding Life's Pitfalls

Review Date: 2006-01-25
This award winning book presents practical, workable, life changing, concepts. These principles apply to parents who are teaching their children. They are relevant for the young person in high school or college. And for the adult on the threshold of a new stage of life: starting a family, a career move, or in retirement years. Whatever your age you will find the book applicable to your situation.

Parrish reveals secrets to success in the area of relationships, goal setting, and values. He then goes on to offer suggestions for a time line of adult life. He gives specific applications for marriage, family, others, finances, and healthy living. It is a book about making the best choices when wrestling with life's most important decisions.

Parrish quotes from the classic motivational authors. Among his favorites are Og Mandino, Napoleon Hill, Miguel Ruiz, Eckert Tolle, and James Allen. I especially enjoyed his "Lesson in a Nutshell" and "A Few Profound Thoughts" sections.

This is a book that you will want to read, reread, and internalize, and then take intelligent action steps into a successful future.

A great book for everyone from any walk of life!

This book is easy to read, has great principals to guide anyone looking to learn some of life's most important lessons from a truly wonderful, successful and generous man. As a person who loves to read and learn from self help and self improvement books, I rate this one a 10.

I am not sure what planet the previous reviewer is from, (Planet Jealousy perhaps?) my guess is he has a personal issue. I suggest he give the book to someone who will appreciate it, which shouldn't be hard. My feeling is that it makes a great gift for someone getting started in life, so that they can take advantage of its lessons.

Life's Greatest Lesson: 20 Things That Matter by Hal Urban
www.halurban.com

This is an Owner's Manual for a Happy and Successful Life!!!,

Its timeless message on character education should be read by every child, parent and teacher. It is sure to become a classic.

I have given away at least five copies to family and friends!

It was awarded Best Inspirational Book of the Year 2000 by Writer's Digest Magazine.

I have donated a few select books that have been added to my local Public Library. This is by far the best inspirational and motivational book I have read so far. It contains the wisdom of the ages and essential life truths.

A few of the books I have donated are: HOW TO SUCCEED IN LIFE: Ideas and Principles They Don't Teach in School by Ned Grossman, MASTER SUCCESS: Create a Life of Purpose, Passion, Peace and Prosperity by Bill FitzPatrick, a local author from Natick, MA, FREEDOM FROM FEAR: Learn How to Live Life to the Fullest by Mark Matteson, The story of one man's discovery of simple truths that lead to wealth, joy and peace of mind, and I DARE YOU By William H. Danforth.

I highly recommend Life's Greatest Lessons, as it teaches the wisdom of the ages. This book is so wonderful, that after I finished it, I went back and re-read it again. Periodically, I will reread certain chapters again. I am very select in what I choose to donate to the library. I am donating it to the library so it can benefit the most people possible. This book on character education is a topic not normally taught in schools. It is an "owner's manual for a happy and successful life." It describes in a simple easy to understand manner, common-sense life skills that can be applied immediately to enhance and enrich anyone's life.

Ever since Mr. Parrish and his staff "adopted" a 5th grade class at Hester elementary school, my daughter Pearl, one of those 5th graders, has had a white board with a list of goals in her room. As I'd walk in and out of her room, year after year, the list would morph--checkmarks would appear, items would disappear, and interesting new items would appear. This pattern was steadfast as the tide. I was so proud when Mr. Parrish asked Pearl to speak at one of his company's morning meetings. She talked about the "Better World" theory--an idea Mr. Parrish and his staff had shared with Pearl's class. Part of the concept is that one should not blame others for their predicaments, and they should take responsibility for improving their own lives. Just this one concept alone can be life-transforming. But in "If I'd Known Then What I Know Now," Mr. Parrish shares MANY tips that can help you better your life NOW. One irony of this book may be this: it is divided into lessons for different age groups (for example, 7 to 15, 16 to 25, 26 to 40 and so on). It could be hard to get your 17 year old to sit down and read the section of the book that pertains to them, because at that age, they might think they do not need any advice. Yet if they would be open to reading and internalizing the advice, their whole future could be happier!!! I thank Mr. Parrish for sharing goal setting tips with Pearl that have enabled her to chart her life's course. Pearl is only 19, and she's already been to Paris, Amsterdam, Venice, New York, Riverside, Omaha, and had her own TV show! I used to love reading positive-thinking books when I was young, and this book reminded me of those days when all seemed possible. I realized after reading his book that all is STILL possible. Since reading Mr. Parrish's book, I got reacquainted with long lost friends, I've improved at keeping commitments (I want my word to be my "bond"), and I'm reviving some goals I set aside a long time ago. Thanks, Mr. Parrish! -- Debbie Wible (11/17/3)

This is a good book to read if you are a serious yoga practitioner or teacher, since it reviews in a simplified way the Yogasutras of Patanjali and Iyengar's point of view on life and life experiences. It has nothing to do with religion, it is just a different take on life that might prove useful and enlightening.

What a beautiful collection this is. The afternoon it arrived, I wandered again in Middle Earth, lost in Alan Lee's art. But most wonderful, it seems to me (who came to the movies from many readings of the books,) is that as I looked at these drawings they recalled not just scenes from the movies, but returned me to the tactile pleasure of discovering this world as I first had found it --in Tolkien's books. I love both the books and the movies. Now, when time constrains, I don't have to choose between the two. Thank you, Alan Lee.

If you're looking for the film's information literally, this might not be what you want. But, if you're looking for a trip into the cretive process that brought Tolkiens masterpiece to life, you might like this one.
Alan Lee is a wonderful artist, his drawings are really impressive, and in this book he shows how he created his version of Tolkien's world, trying to be faithfull to the autor's ideas.
There's plenty of drawings and sketches from all parts of the story, and the text explains how and why they were developed to the movie's scenes.
I loved.

I have always personally been appalled at the Kill ratio in shelters, but didn't realize how easy it is to fix the situation. I am disgusted at how PETA and HSUS believes that killing animals in shelters is "more humane" than placing them in homes. This book was an eye-opener for me, and I will definately STOP giving my money to HSUS and volunteering at kill shelters. I can't wait until the day when I can open a No Kill Shelter of my own, where each and every animal will be treated the same, not shelled out to the back to be killed because they weren't loved enough by their previous owners.

Redemption Ignores The Biggest Issue

Review Date: 2008-05-14
A no-kill shelter was recently built on 13 wooded acres outside a city near me. The facility has space for 250 animals. A huge budget. Slick marketing. A partnership with a major pet food manufacturer. A variety of innovative programs. 1300 volunteers, 130 foster families and thousands of extremely generous supporters. Last year, 2100 of their animals found new homes. It's the kind of operation Nathan Winograd would call a no-kill success story. And yet the organization admits they cannot accommodate the more than 300 requests they receive weekly from people trying to relinquish their pets to them.
Within 15 miles of this beautiful facility are 2 open admission shelters that have to euthanize for space. They have implemented most if not all of the programs Mr. Winograd claims is necessary to achieve no-kill status. But, unlike their no-kill neighbor up the road, these shelters do not turn any animals away. Last year, they took in 21,000 animals! Anyone out there willing to build, staff, operate and fund a no-kill shelter for 21,000 animals?
Which brings me to what I found most irritating about Redemption. Nathan Winograd never discusses what I believe is the biggest issue separating the two kinds of shelters- what to do with the staggering number of animals no-kill shelters turn away. He only briefly mentions the necessity of no-kill shelters to "occasionally" limit incoming animals. Where I live, however, no-kill shelters only occasionally accept animals! In fact, I don't know anyone who has been successful getting a stray or their own animal into a no-kill shelter. My point is this: EVERY NO-KILL SHELTER IN THE COUNTRY HAS TO FIRST ACCEPT EVERY ANIMAL BROUGHT TO ITS FACILITY BEFORE WE CAN HAVE ANY HOPE OF ACHIEVING A TRUE NO-KILL NATION.
They shouldn't be setting standards for open admission shelters when their very way of operating directly contributes to these shelters having to euthanize for space.
The author crows about his success leading an open admission no-kill in a sparsely populated rural part of New York. Note that, last year, Tompkins County SPCA took in less than 3000 animals. His urban success story - the San Francisco SPCA- did not even take animals from the public if I correctly understand their relationship with the SF Animal Care and Control. Last year, the San Francisco SPCA took in less than 4000 animals. When Nathan Winograd can take over an open admission shelter accepting 21,000 animals annually and still make it no-kill, then and only then will I be impressed enough to jump on the Redemption bandwagon.
I also did not like that Redemption is full of inflammatory, anonymous and dated remarks that cannot be verified easily because the author does not include footnotes and references you usually see in a piece of nonfiction. Fact checking is limited to a 12 page bibliography.
It is a myth that we can somehow save every homeless or unwanted animal without having to first address the disparity between no-kill and 'kill' shelter admission policies and intake numbers. Redemption only gives one side of the story and, unfortunately, the author is promoting it as the whole & balanced picture it isn't. I'm just a little surprised that readers are swallowing his half-truths with such gusto. Dig a little deeper, animal lovers! You can start by asking you favorite no-kill shelter how many animals they turned away this week.

This is a compelling story about real people doing what most wouldn't think of doing. It's infuriating that the captain of the freighter was so thoughtless. Michael J. Tougias, Ten Hours Until Dawn: The True Story of Heroism and Tragedy Aboard the Can Do (St. Martin's, 2005) ***

After the runaway success of The Perfect Storm and In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex, I rather expected there to be a flood, pardon the pun, of nonfictional tales of derring-do on the high seas. It never happened; Sebastian Junger turned his attention landward, Nathaniel Philbrick has only released a single book since, and the rest of the literary world seems to have met this possible developing trend with a thundering silence. Until, that is, Mike Tougias released Ten Hours Until Dawn, set in the same basic space of The Perfect Storm, but a number of years in the past, during the Blizzard of 1978, a storm that will long be remembered by anyone who happened to be living in the northeast at the time.

Ten Hours Until Dawn was written by a journalist, which is not normally a bad thing. The downside to it is that journalism makes for great half-pagers, but across two hundred-odd pages, it can get a little dry. Tougias has a very worthwhile story here, and tells it competently; however, it could have been told a bit better.

It's the story of Frank Quirk and his pilot boat Can Do, based out of Gloucester, Massachusetts. When the Global Hope, an oil taker, runs aground a few miles south of Gloucester, the harbor patrol sends a couple of boats out after it, and those two boats get caught in the Blizzard of '78, which roars out of nowhere. One gets lost, and the Can Do goes out after it. Eight hours later, the Can Do, also lost, makes its final radio transmission. From the radio transcripts and the aftermath of the storm, Tougias weaves the tale of what may have happened aboard the Can Do that night, as well as the tales of what happened to those two Coast Guard ships (both of which made it back to port) and the Global Hope. There are a number of times during this narrative where Tougias' journalist style serves it well; the simple just-the-facts-ma'am delivery adds a depth to the action. It stumbles, however, when the subject is the humans themselves; even when Tougias is relating the worlds of the survivors, the prose seems oddly wooden in spots, as if the goal is to check in, get a quote, and get back to the action.

Don't get me wrong, it's a good book, and an incident that certainly deserved to be enshrined in the national consciousness. Pick it up, give it a go. ***

Although there are tremendous similarities to the Sebastian Junger's Perfect Storm masterpiece (the geographical area in which the story takes place), this is not the Perfect Storm. It's a great book which I absolutely could not put down! I live in Beverly, MA which is near where some of the big events in the book take place and it so happened that as I was reading the book, my wife had me drop by a yard sale at the Coast Guard housing in Beverly. What a wonderful book and one which transmits to the reader quickly and artfully the tremendous power of the sea!

I can't believe I was only introduced to this in a graduate level class, under the humble (and quite vague) disguise of "modern enterprise systems". That said, this book has tremendous applications beyond IE courses. Astonishing and empowering...and I hope it really catches on for those who can handle a transformation free of charge courtesy of Wheeler....I guess IE's have a strong advantage with this one, so it'll be our little secret in the meantime...

This is not for the Acacdemic, It doesn't explain the satistical mathematics behind the techniques, but it is a good solid recipe book with solid advice on understanding the nature of variation and application of process control. Get's right to the heart of the practice.
Good job.

Great to help an organization start to think about variation

While I agree with a couple of other reviews that this book is high-level and superficial, this is an excellent resource to start discussions about variation. In an organization where we are new to process improvement or even considering the impact or sources of variation, this book is essential. It is a quick read and great for management.

I learned statistics back in the university then never applied concepts and after some 10 years I was challenged to undertake basic statistics matters in the way of learning Six Sigma. This book is very focused on the variation and the graphical interpretation of data. Yuo may read this book over a weekend then attack Six Sima stats without pain.

Interpreting data is about the patterns, not the points

This is not a book for people looking for the technical detail of data analysis or statistical process control. The pearl in this book is the message that interpreting your data (such as KPIs or performance measures) is about looking at patterns, not at individual points. It's a book that can be read by people not interested in the technical stuff (such as managers or executives) - and it *should* be read by these people. We have to move beyond the days of comparing this month to last month to judge business performance, and this book is a great step in the right direction!

Dr. Baldor's "Algebra" and "Arithmetics" are an excellent reference for those young students interested in having strong basic math skills. Honestly, if it wasn't for these books, I wouldn't have succeeded in engineering school.

One of the most interesting things about Dr. Baldor's books is that the first editions were published more than fifty years ago. My father, who is also an engineer, used Dr. Baldor's books during high school and regards them as one of the best books he ever used during his schooling years.

Five stars.

P.S.: The short biographies at the beginning of every chapter in "Algebra" were always fun!

The best!

This the best algebra book that I've seen. Both my wife and I used it when we were in high school years ago, and now we're using it to complement the teachings in our kids schools. My children understand the concepts of algebra much better from this book than from their school textbook.

The limitation is that it's written in Spanish, so you have to be able to read basic Spanish to get the most of it. Being a math book, it doesn't require advanced reading, since algebra is based in lots of symbols.

I read his books in elementary school during my spare time. Yes, they are old fashioned math, but they are great for self-teaching. If it wasn't for Baldor I wouldn't be in MIT for grad school.

Right now my daughter is in that inquisitive state of mind and it seems to be feeding her interest. It plays right into the fact that the old testament is a foreshadow of the new testament. So, therefore, it helps open the scriptures to us for a deeper understanging. Good investment!

This study bible focuses on history and culture in the bible. I recommend this as a reference tool rather than as your main study bible - partly because the notes focus on archaeology rather than theology and partly because it's very thick (not portable). Fun stuff though and sheds new light on scripture. Moderate & comprehensive.

worth the cost

I purchased this Bible for my husband and he could not be more pleased. It is quite large and heavy but is so full of wonderful studies and maps.
