This is a story of an innocent childhood , set in the 50's in a small Southern town in Alabama. It's almost a Girls Huck Finn in that the main character Tab Rutland and her friend,Maudie May "the lightest brown skinned person that I know", get up to all sorts of mischief and fun in what turns out to be their last summer together and the virtual end of their childhood.I'm sure that this will bring back happy memories to many readers and a sense of nostalgia for a more innocent time.
I loved this book -- a very memorable book

Even after a month has passed, I still find myself thinking of this book, and when I was reading it, I couldn't put it down. Devoto tells a story of childhood in the South (northern Alabama) in the early 1950s, where fear of polio and segregation were pervasive realities. 8-year-old Tab (Tabatha) is friends with a boy whose mother, fearful of polio, makes him stay in the basement while she's at work. Tab's other friend is Maudie May, a 13-year-old "colored" girl whose younger twin brothers (known only as the Brothers) tag along around, kept in check by their strong-as-iron older sister. It is a time when children really were free to spend their summers with little adult supervision during the day. As a result Tab and her friends have some amazing and funny adventures, including an unforgettable episode on the Tennessee River in a rickety rowboat they've borrowed. I laughed out loud at a number of points in this book, both from the funny situations and the funny commentary by Tab.
This book is a keeper.

This book was a gift from a 'southern' friend in an effort to explain the 'southern psyche?!' Good, lord, I thought I'd die of hackneyed plot development and platitude! The truly interesting aspects were never persued nor explained -- the mother--southern woman personified and yet left to hang -- the ill-fated father -- zip! Ultimately a mawkish effort at 'southern literature' that leaves the reader unfulfilled and the genre stagnant. I am shocked to learn this thing has been compared to Harper Lee and Truman Capote! Are people just not reading anymore, are they just stupid, or what? After a brief while; you just don't give a damn and want to finish the thing. If this is the present/future of 'southern letters,' I'm even more glad the North won the Civil War!

As always Ms. Ray knows how to put together beautiful love stories. I praise her storyline with Elisa, that part could have really turned into an amazing thriller. In all the books that I have read from this author, I have never been disappointed with the endings. Keep them coming!!

I guess this is one of those books you would call "chick lit". Although the story had a nice flow....I just felt that Elise's character wasn't really needed in the story. Maureen's character kinda irritated me because honestly I really didn't think what she was so worried about was that big of a deal in this day and age. It was a nice story but in my opinion it was just an okay read.

The voluptuous Traci Evans has an iron gate around her heart. Multiple wounds inflicted by her cheating deceased husband and her nasty mother have almost destroyed Traci's faith in love, her trust in people in general. Despite all this, her attraction to the sexy Ryan Gilmore, her best friend and neighbor's son, will not be denied. Traci is not Ryan's type or at least he did not think so until he met her. Still Traci's lush curves, generous breast, childbearing hips combined with a heart of gold makes Ryan want to know Traci inside and out.
The slim and trim, 59 years old, Maureen Gilmore loved her husband dearly. Now 4 years a widow she is missing the intimacy and the bond she had with her husband. Can the sexy police office, Simon Dunlap, fill the growing void in her heart despite the fact that he is almost 10 years her junior. Will Maureen let her feelings for Simon overcome doubts and fears due to the age difference?
Francis Ray has done it again. Not Even If You Begged is a page-turner from beginning to end. The characters in this book come to life so naturally you almost forget your reading fiction. I felt Traci and Maureen's pain as they dealt with their personal struggles. I wanted them to find the love they both deserved with the hot men Francis Ray created to take my breath away. I fell just a little bit in love with both Simon and Ryan for they had qualities most single women look for when they imagine their life mate. The story itself flowed effortlessly. Francis Ray combined the budding romances with sub-plots that gave this story an essence of realness and gave you insight into the characters you can only see when they interact with people outside of their budding relationships. I closed the book wanting to read more but still satisfied with what I was given.

Francis Ray is a true story teller in this novel. When it first starts out, you are so certian that this women would leave her husband. I dont care if he was sick, because your happiness should be your first priority. But when I saw that this story was original and worth reading, I couldnt put it down. The ending is just as you would want it, but everything leading to the end is a pure mystery. Get your copy today. I am sure you will be very pleased and guessing the whole time.
Well, I'm begging for more! A lovely romance.

The Invincible Sisterhood, widows who lost a great love in their lives have got together to make a pact, and prove that they will not let their loss dominate their lives. Full figured Traci Evans, a reluctant guest, is invited to one of their sacred meetings and suddenly finds herself signing up and swearing to secrecy.
Although, Traci doesn't want to be tied down, when she meets Ryan Gilmore, her best friend's son, she finds him hard to resist. Somehow she always ends up spending time with him, even though an inner voice keeps warning her that's he'll end up cheating on her, just like her late husband did. Yes, unlike the other members of the women's group, her relationship was not one of everlasting love; something she discovered after he died but felt too ashamed to admit. This whole situation made Traci feel like even more of a fraud during the Invincible Sisterhood meetings, but these were strong ladies who would not take no for an answer.
It wasn't long before Ryan had enlisted Traci to help plan his mum, Maureen's birthday party. After a few meetings Traci gets annoyed with the fact that Ryan is using her only to help plan his mother's party, and wants nothing more from her than her mind. Justifying this to herself, Traci feels that at least she will now avoid an awkward and complicated relationship that would no doubt end in heartache and tears. Would Traci ever be able to stop living in the past? All she has to do is open her eyes and arms to love again. But, as in all good stories, there is plenty of conflict to get in the way. One of which appears in the form of Ryan's ex girlfriend.
This is a terrific story, as always, from author Francis Ray. The plot that revolves around the two lovers, Traci and Ryan makes it a page turner in itself, but we also have the added story of Maureen and her new man, Simon Dunlap, and how they take a chance on a shy and insecure boy called Jason, who could be more trouble than he is worth. A delightful tale of complex, believable characters learning to get along with each other despite their differences, and the problems that life can throw at them.

I read this book when it first came out and I still have it as a reference. Debra has a wonderful way of illustrating scientific principles so that anyone can understand them. I now eat more often, don't diet, exercise regularly, and feel like a naturally thin woman. People comment to me that I seem to "eat all day" and never gain a thing. Indeed it is true! I also have more energy than ever before because I am not bogged down digesting huge meals and my blood sugar levels are very even (I used to be hypoglycemic). This is my way of life. This book is truly amazing. I also enjoy how balanced and moderate her recommendations are for all the changes she suggests. Often it is still a matter of choosing among the methods she describes that best fits your life. It's a very doable program and can stay with you for life. I highly recommend this plan to anyone willing to get off the diet failure train for good!
Best book ever.

DON'T DIET! no more counting calories, weighing yourself and yo-yoing, focus on eating when you are hungry, not for emotional or social reasons, and eating during the day and not at night, drink more water, and exercise!!
I learned SO much from this book about my body and HOW i lose weight and store weight. I bought my mom a copy. I truly truly recommend this book to all women who struggle with weight, even those 10 lbs.

If you are ready to get off the diet-train and do something that actually works, READ THIS BOOK. Easy-to-read information with a fresh perspective on why we as women have a more difficult time losing weight than men. She will teach you how to EAT and lose weight. I've lost 10 pounds so far, but more than that, I feel great. Like a lot of women, I have tried every kind of pill, diet craze (remember the cabbage soup diet?), Atkins, Weight Watchers...and on most of them you lose a little, gain back a lot, and are hungry, miserable, and frusterated. This is the first program created for women to teach you how to eat, move, and live for life. This is not a diet. It is a program you do for life, and it truly do-able. No crazy counting, measuring, or supplements. It's easy. This book gives you an honest approach to working with your female body to lose weight, and it's not hard to follow. I'm doing it, and so is my mom and sister, and we all have busy lives and stubborn metabolisms. If we can, you can!

Debra Waterhouse is what we've been waiting for ladies! She explains why female fat cells are different from male fat cells and what we have to do to make them behave. She doesn't just tell you why - she really explains it and gives you the power (knowledge) to turn your life around and be as healty as possible - maybe even a babe too! I just started reading the book, but I heard her talk in person about a month and a half ago and I'm still fired up! Give her a try - a real try - and you won't be sorry - you'll be fabulous!

This is a great book for the fight that most women encounter. Women criticize themselves unmercifully and it's a shame. They get put in a position where they seem to be required to be perfect but given little but their own resources to get to that point.
The best thing about this book that I see is that it is aimed at reducing the amount of stored fat. I doesn't aim at a scale, which is a useless device for this kind of change and doesn't require a starvation diet. She has solid ways to burn fat and to keep it from storing again.
Good work Debra.

We should add Kristen Heather Strickland Gilbert to the list of sociopathic narcissistic murderers who are female. She is cold-blooded, calculating, manipulative, controlling, obsessive and possessive over her husband, her children, her boyfriends and friends. Kristen comes across as the angel of death but she suits her nickname. As a nurse in a veterans hospital, she would claim several lives through poisoning and rare medicines misused on purpose. She has a terrible attitude and discards everybody around her as easy as the needles that were filled with poisonous injections. She would finally get justice and be sent to Texas to remain a federal prison for the rest of her life. Despite a near death sentence, she is probably far away from Leeds, Massachussetts and the terror that she caused while as a nurse on duty during the graveyard shift. The patients were much better off being neglected than meeting with the angel of death who caused such terror, heartache, and misery where ever she went.

In PERFECT POISON, M. William Phelps has written a very good true crime story. Phelps has dug up another of those sociopaths he apparently has no trouble finding, this time a criminal and narcissistic nurse named Kristen Gilbert, who, while intelligent, is, in typical narcissistic/sociopathic fashion, not as smart as she thinks she is.
The book's positive points are very strong. Phelps, as he proved in his EVERY MOVE YOU MAKE, is an intelligent, diligent, and professional writer.
He has chosen an interesting story, and he moves the narrative along well, even in the last third of the book which is the often tedious trial segment. Phelps' research is impeccable and he clearly spent a lot of time
and energy on this book.
There are several reasons why I do not think PERFECT POISON is as good a book as EVERY MOVE YOU MAKE and why I rate it 4 rather than 5 stars:
1. PERFECT POISON at 474 pages is too long. I attribute some of this
to Phelps' apparent inclusion of every possible scrap of
informations he found, some of which is irrelevant, uninteresting
and occasionally just nonsense. I personally don't care to know how
lawyers, detectives, etc., are dressed, and certainly not more than
once. On page 232 Phelps spends two paragraphs describing a
building's parking garage, and states "Guards sit in tiny wooden
kiosks and take money as people exit the parking garages." Somehow I
just don't see this as unique. Did Murphy (page 287) really "put
out his first cigarette and prepare to light another."? While
discussing his trial strategy with his detectives, did D.A. Welch
(page 307) really "raise his eyebrows." Cynical, lazy, incompetent
writers of true crime use this device to fill their pages. Phelps
is clearly too good and too thorough to be so all inclusive for
this reason, but the book could use some editing.
2. I believe that in the best of true crime writing an author
as good as Phelps will basically write as a reporter, skillfully
presenting the facts and allowing the reader to form his own
opinions. Phelps does not do this. The tone of PERFECT POISON
is dramatic rather than objective and Phelps' writing in the trial
section is clearly biased toward the prosecution. On page 132,
Phelps writes that the result of an audit of drug security at a VA
hospital indicated that there was no accountability. He then
repeats, italicized, in his very next sentence, "There was no
accountability." On page 66, he writes that "most of the codes
were being called during the busiest times...and, lo and behold,
on Gilbert's tour of duty. Phelps is a talented enough writer
that it is irritating when he uses italics and "lo and
behold"s to emphasize what his narrative has already made crystal
clear, particularly since I would assume that most of his
readers are adults.
In the trial section, Phelps has defense attorney Miles
"delivering a diatribe" and classifies a cross examination of
some government witnesses, which, though unsuccessful, does not
appear to have been especially stupid as "Another misguided
claim by Gilbert's defense." Prosecutor Welch, on the other hand
"had come from the old school of law where litigation was all
about information - possessing it, controlling it, managing it,
and using it effectively." While I'm not sure that statement
has any actual meaning, its tone lends Welch a biased dignity and
competence not found in objective writing.
I present these flaws, as I perceive them, because I think Phelps is an excellent writer who can do better than PERFECT POISON. But even so, it is still a very interesting and well researched story. I'm happy to have read it and think most true crime fans will love it.

The story of Kristen Gilbert, as told by M. William Phelps, is something that hits so close to home. Is there one of us that has not placed our care into the hands of someone who we trusted would ensure our safety and well-being, such as a nurse or doctor? This was the case of many VAMC patients, and their families, who thought they were being treated for their ailments, but instead died of sudden cardiac arrest as a result of EPI posioning. And Gilbert was not discriminate in her victims as they ranged from their thirties to those well into their golden years.
What was the most fascinating aspect of this book is to see the clear evidence of psychosis in this young lady and to ponder how she was able to hide her insanity for thirty plus years.
I found that in the third portion of the book it became a bit redundant with the information regarding her trial. However, there were still many aspects of the trial that were newly presented and attention catching.
M. William Phelps is perhaps the best true crime writer today. His books, just as this one, are well researched, provide indepth information, and, overall, are fast paced and attention grabbing. Just as I have recommended his other books, I highly recommend this one too!

It answered a lot of questions so I am happy with the purchase. However, I found it incomplete as it did not include ANY information on upper body lifts. I was also looking for lazer treatment of wrinkled hands. The condition of the hands is usually a give away regardless of the beauty of the face (ed Priscilla Presley).

I knew very little about plastic surgery before reading this book. Dr. Loftus provides the perfect level of detail and "must know" information on each type of surgery/procedure. She writes in a very clear and concise manner that will help any reader to make appropriate decisions. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in plastic surgery or skincare options.

Dr. Loftus has written a very informative and well organized book which can be quite helpful to someone considering cosmetic surgery, but one thing to keep in mind is that the book is several years old.
I strongly suggest that anyone considering cosmetic surgery make a point of also seeking out up to date information on any procedure they are interested in as cosmetic surgery techniques and procedures are an evolving field and there have been a number of changes and advances since Dr. Loftus book was first published.

It was so easy to read three in a row. I think I had the whole three books finished in three days! It's nice to have many books into one because then you don't have to buy the next one or wait to go to the library when it opens next, or even to see if the library has it! It was so nice!!!

"G is for Gumshoe" was my first Kinsey Millhone novel. I will tell you that I went back and read everything leading up to "G" before "H" came out. I have been an avid Sue Grafton fan since the beginning. She makes Kinsey so fun and fallible. You just have to love her and her stories. I especially love Henry.

I have read almost all of Grafton's books, I still have a few that I have missed, she is ingenious, every single novel is original. The reading is easy, I can devour a book in one to two days, and then I am looking around for another. I have just finished J,K,L,M, am working on N, and am now looking for the ones in between that I have missed.

Hide amd seek, was excellant, I am now reading Hokus Pokus. Those girls and Charles are really smart. Horray for them. I cannot wait for Fast Track to be on the market, I have already preorderd it. Thanks Fern Michaels, for the Sisterhood series. I will be sorry to see them go.

Fern Michaels always keeps the reader interested but this is not her best to date. I like her plots and the characters' development but she falls short on the endings lately. I think it would be better if we learned what she did to the objects of their revenge in the last chapter, rather than a side note in the Epilogue. I think she rushes to finish the book and leaves us wanting more details at the end. But I still enjoyed the book, despite the weak ending. I'll continue to follow the Sisterhood as long as Ms. Michaels writes about them.

Selfishness is best left outside the bedroom. This book shows you how to bring out the ultimate pleasure of the female body. Women have many more erogenous lady parts to her than is believed by most. The author of this book does an excellent job explaining the wonders of female comfort and orgasm, including the elusive female ejaculation. I have read this one at least twice and refer back to it for reference as needed. Spice up your sex life. Give her the gift of making love.

You can read this booklet in less than a sitting. It has some interesting things that you can learn about but as TL said: every woman is different and you have to know what she likes and she has to know what you like. So I can tell you that if you are talkative with your partner you could try it but I'm sure that is not as the book says: that every woman can try this, that's not possible.
Short book, crammed with too much filler.

I must say that I was disappointed with this book. It has some great advice in it, but you have to shift through too many "testimonials" talking about what a great technique this is by people who've used it. Plus you get to read about what a fantastic lover Tom is. Everything after page 75 is worthless, and the story of how he discovered this technique is a pointless digression. If you know how to give a good massage and know how to find the G-Spot, you can pass on this book. However, if you don't, then by all means pick it up. It's a quick read, and a pleasant way to kill a few hours.

My niece, Raecyne, recommended this book series. I enjoy the Yada Yada Prayer Group series so very much. Neta expertly crafts her characters so that you almost instinctively assign voices and faces to these characters. You feel as though you know these characters; you go to church with these ladies, they are in your choir or your small group. I told my niece that I am already lamenting my completion of the series. It will be like the feeling of loneliness you experience when you have to leave your church family and move to another location. You know you will miss these people who have meant so much to your life and your spiritual growth. Sounds like an extreme view of characters in a book? I challenge you to start reading the series. You will be delighted. You will also be challenged in your spiritual walk as the main character Jodi Baxter is challenged and grows spiritually. Treat yourself to the ladies of the Yada Yada Prayer Group!

I liked the series so much I now am buying a set of my own and am passing them around my church and friends to read. It will open your eyes to see how different ethnic groups look at church and prayer and how they see life from their culture. Book #2 brings the group together even more and starts to have an effect on the husbands and children. There is so much good in these books, I thank God for Neta Jackson and her talent for writing them. What a blessing!

Amy is in publishing and Tara just wrote a book, so the two are forced to get along with each other for the sake of the book.
Amy had told Tara that she was engaged (even though she really wasn't) so when Tera invites Amy to her house to discuss the book Amy invites Tony Stiles, another author she has published (and whom she can't stand) to pretend that he is her fience. BEST ENEMIES by Jane Heller
December 31, 2006
Amazon Rating: 4/5 stars
I always enjoy Jane Heller's books, and this was no exception. BEST ENEMIES is narrated by two women, who started out as best friends growing up but became enemies when one of them was found with the other's fiancé in bed.
Amy Sherman was about to get married when she came home to the apartment she shared with her fiancé and found him horizontal and naked with her best friend Tara Messer. Tara was supposed to be her maid of honor, but that act of betrayal ended the friendship. Tara promptly married the scumbag, Stuart, and Amy didn't lay eyes on the two of them again until years later, when she bumps into Tara on the streets of Manhattan.
Amy is now working for a successful publishing company, and Tara has just sold her book to the company Amy happens to be working for. However, Amy doesn't know it yet. Instead, Amy goes on and on about her upcoming wedding plans to a man whose identity she cannot reveal, hoping to rub it in that she's happy despite the trauma she suffered because of Tara and Stuart. Unfortunately, when Amy does find out what Tara has been up to lately, she's not sure what to do. Amy has told a big lie that will come back to haunt her. Amy is told that she will be working closely with Tara to get the book published on time - in 6 months. 6 months was also the time frame Amy gave Tara regarding her upcoming wedding to the mystery man. What is she going to do?
On the spur of the moment, during a heated conversation about Tara's favorite novelist Tony Stiles, a man that Amy loathes with a passion, she's not sure why she does it, but she blurts out to Tara that Tony is indeed her secret boyfriend and soon-to-be husband. Of course Tara is fit to be tied, and invites them to dinner. In order for this to work, Amy has to convince Tony to go out with her. It isn't easy, but she is surprised at how fast she is able to get Tony to change his opinion about her, and vice versa. Amy finds out through his publicist his interests and hobbies and she uses the information to woo him. And it works.
Amy is now ready to get her revenge on Tara and Stuart by showing that she has indeed moved on and has landed a very eligible bachelor. And while she's busy doing that, she also finds that she's attracted to Tony, and she sees a different side to his personality that she likes. Tony also seems to be falling for Amy, which surprises him as well, and soon the two no longer have to pretend to be a couple...
What I found interesting about BEST ENEMIES is that we get to hear the other side of the story. Tara narrates a huge chunk of the novel, giving the reader a slightly different version of what happened from the beginning. Tara comes across as a very shallow person through the eyes of Amy, and even through the eyes of Tara, she still seems rather one dimensional, but the more I read her story, the more I liked her as well. BEST ENEMIES was fun, a romance/chick lit story that I enjoyed a lot. Jane Heller has to be one of my favorite authors in this genre. She never fails to entertain.

In order to try to stop the spread of this terrible disease that killed and paralized its victims, leaving many to live in "iron lungs", many towns and cities closed places where people gathered. During this last polio summer, Bainbridge closed the theather and public pool leaving children looking for adventures in other ways.
Tab, a tomboy, a great fan of Roy Rogers, seeks adventure with her best friend, Maudie May, "the lightest brown colored person" she knew. They had a lot of fun, but also were in danger at times.
They fished for the "largest cat fish" in the Tennessee river, built a secret hiding place in the woods. They meddled with the town bootlegger, Mr. Jake, and they learned many secrets of the people of their town.
Devoto is a very gifted writer and in this debut novel shows a well developed plot with believable characters.
