A Brilliant, Classic Book of Sensual ART Nudes
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-19
Publisher Twin Palms has picked up the torch here for this most amazing talent, Andre De Dienes, and has created here what can only be described as a long overdue tribute to a neglected master. While De Dienes has always been somewhat well known for his work with Marilyn Monroe (he gave Marilyn her first modeling gig), his collaboration with her has come to overshadow his other work, which includes some amazing figure studies and nudes. That body of work is what's represented here, and Studies of the Female Nude is just that - a brilliant, classic, engaging photostudy of the naked female form. There are 100 magnificent nudes and 192 pages featured in this 10x11" encapsulation of a master photographer's lifelong infatuation with the nude form.

De Dienes has that rare and amazing ability - his nudes are often shot in the "traditional" style where the subject is presented more as a piece of art than as a living, breathing, personality-driven individual. But De Dienes still manages, through his powerful sense of positioning and composition, to make his subjects seem so absolutely electrifying, so deliciously sensual. These are art nudes, yes - but be prepared to be aroused. This is spectacular stuff not to be missed.

STUDIES OF THE FEMALE NUDE by Andre Dienes (1931885397) is published in a limited first edition of 4,000 casebound copies; so run, don't walk, to get yours - especially if you're a college-level art library. Black and white artistic shots of the female nude are presented on oversized pages for maximum effect, have a strong nature-background orientation, and play with composition as well as presentation: from marbled and venetian-blind foregrounds to studies in contrast. The artistic displays go far beyond most nude photography gatherings, providing the works of a master best known for his Marilyn Monroe photos - but capable, as STUDIES OF THE FEMALE NUDE displays, of so very much more.

Immensely helpful guide to PMS

Review Date: 2005-06-24
I bought Dr. Taylor's book as soon as it came out and it's been an immensely helpful guide in helping me (along with the help of my therapist and ob/gyn) realize how powerful hormones can be - it's been a huge relief to realize that it's not "all in my head"! I found the exercises, especially the PMS tracking chart, to be very insightful. If PMS or PMDD is an issue for you and you like self-help books, I highly recommend Taking Back the Month.

Not only does Taking Back the Month dispel the mysteries and wives tales surrounding the subject of PMS, but more importantly it delivers the tools to take control, rather than to surrender control, over your body and well being.

Taylor and Colino have written an excellent research-based guide to managing PMS. I have used the examples and guides found in the book to teach women in the clinical setting, and I have used it to teach nurse practitioner students about options for PMS management. I particularly like the straight forward suggestions that target healthy lifestyle choices. Women who follow the diet, exercise, and stress management guidelines that effectively manage symptoms of PMS have the added benefit of knowing they are contributing to their overall health. Thank you for this wonderful contribution to women's health.

Every woman should read this book!

I am a menopausal mother with a pubescent daughter. Both of us are free of hormonal troubles, thanks largely to the advice of this terrific book. It is so full of facts and figures, from both regular and alternative medicine. It covers every possible scenario. I can't imagine anyone that couldn't find a solution for their specific needs. This book is easy to use because each chapter relates to your specific interest, or you can read it cover to cover, which I suggest, since it has great advice on living a successful, healthful, stress free life. I particularly like how, at the end of a chapter, you're given ways to assess your condition and "to do" lists that help solve specific problems. It's written in an easy to understand conversational style. I've given it to both my sisters and many of my friends.

Taking Rosie's Arm is the riveting story of 27 year old Taylor Thomas and her journey from emotional defeat to a profound sense of personal joy to her self and those she comes to love. When Taylor finds herself embroiled with the consequences of bad decisions and family members with problems even greater than her own, she becomes involved with 79 year old Rosie MacIntosh. The two women form a friendship to help Carolyn (a middle-aged woman debilitated by disease and depression) and the in the process Taylor learns invaluable lessons of compassion, wisdom, and love. Very highly recommended reading, Taking Rosie's Arm is a superbly crafted novel from first page to last!

Such a heart warming and realistic story about a person who truely cares about an elderly women that has so much to offer her in her life. Left such a strong impact that should make women and men alike appreciciate the strength and wisdom of the real women in their lifes that can and do make a positive influence on them and can make us all appreciate what really matters in life. Real life, a little drama and one you just can't put down. Made you want to to see it as movie on a Sunday night in front of a fire.

There are far too few books for young woman where a clear and meaningful message rings true to the heart. Taylor's short time with elderly Rosie offers an opportunity to fulfill a dream for both. Taylor's troubles grow smaller when she begins to focus on her goals. Rosie, with patience and wit, brings out the best in Taylor. Together they are a remarkable team and reveal how love and compassion can turn the most difficult situations into rewarding experiences. A perfect summer day read and one that you will want to share with your daughters, sisters and dearest friends. A.C. Cooney

We've just started our quest on this path, and found the insights given in this book to be helpful. There are some books out there focused on the Hindu foundation, and others on titilation, but this seems to connect in a practical western manner. Tantra is a process for sharing a deeper connection, and this book gives the proper context for that. This is not a primer on how to try "new" positions, etc.

This book truly explains the connection between low level of sexual pleasure and the deeper synergetic level involving your soul. I wish I would have read this 25 years ago in order to understand the spirituality and true deep beauty that is possible to experience when being with someone you love. This books covers a lot of scientific material, feelings that women/mothers have experienced, but couldn't understand why they were withdrawing or changing their emotions towards their partner or themself. If you want a better understanding of yourself and/or the possibilities of a deeper connecting spiritual relationship, I would highly recommend this book...of course at first it's a little uncomfortable, but that just means your growing in a new area.

The "Bible" for Gyn Surgery

Review Date: 2004-07-15
There are at least two texts that are considered "the authority" for internal medicine. The same for Obstetrics.

For Gyn surgery there is only one, and this is it. Te Linde's is so far ahead of any competitors that all Gynecologists I know consider any other texts to be useful only as supplements to Te Linde's.

It is also written in an easy to follow style - not as dry as many medical texts, and it is exhaustively complete. It would be worth the price (for a Gyn Surgeon) if only for the portions dealing with hysterectomy and surgical treatment of cystocele and stress urinary incontinence.

Pictures are Worth a Thousand Words-Sometimes!

Review Date: 2008-02-26
Enchanted Self: A Positive Therapy (New Directions in Therapeutic Intervention , Vol 1) As a positive psychologist I spend a lot of time trying to express in words all sorts of subtle thoughts and feelings. I try to build up people with words, helping them recognize their strengths and talents and potential. My women clients are often at a loss for words about what is right about themselves, but full of what is wrong. Thus, I was thrilled to come across this book, which is such a positive tribute to us women. Without any words, the pictures express so much of the exurberance, delight and at times pathos of being a woman. We can see in the expressions on these women's faces and their bodily stance a life-time of events, feelings and reactions. I particularly love that the women are from many lands and from times long gone. This is a book worth looking at again and again. It helps us truly 'remember' that yes, all of us are special and worth celebrating.

Like many of the women inside it, this compact book is beautiful - cloth cover, classy presentation, vivid images. While there are a few celebs (Hepburn, Mother Teresa, Billie Holiday), many of these pictures are of unknowns - rich and poor, black and white, young and old, happy and sad. This diversity is the book's secret joy. Romantic and heartfelt (not cheesy), it would be a safe and thoughtful gift for almost anyone, a provocative addition to coffee-tables everywhere.

After years of experiencing excruciating periods, I was diagnosed with endometriosis. I have been searching for months to find natural alternatives to hormone therapy and another laparascopy. I found it in this book. It contains more information on endometriosis than any other resource I have looked through. It also provides thorough dietary suggestions and nutritional supplements. It offers an alternative to the more extreme therapies.

While I was looking to this book for a specific condition, it also contains a wealth of information on the various ailments that women suffer from, as well as suggestions for women's overall health.

I highly reccommend it to anyone looking to feel better, naturally.

This is an exceptionally well-researched and well-written book covering the most common medical problems for women, how to prevent them and how to treat them the natural way. I am particularly impressed with the author's broad knowledge of biochemistry, medical conditions and her reliance on hard data from published studies. If you're tired of the side-effects of chemical drugs you'll find plenty of sound advice and alternative therapies backed up by scrupulous research. This is a great stand-alone volume on the subject but it also complements other books on women's medical conditions written from traditional medical viewpoints.

I found this text has good basic information for students at an undergraduate and lay persons. It's 2006 release date insures it's resources and sources are up-to-date. The information is culturally sensative and addresses gynacological care for women with a range of sexual orientations.
However, this text's major disadvantage is it's lack of detailed and color pictures and illustrations. It does have good charts that organise information. I also find this text is too basic a reference for graduate level students entering health sciences such as Women's Health Nurse Practitioners.
