This textbook is one of the easier ones to read. The information flows easily and maintains your attention, without getting you lost in a lot of details. It is easy to follow the text from one thought to the next and is making it realitively easy to keep up with a heavy reading load for my management course.

The text also offers great end of chapter reviews and exercises for helping the information be relative and applicable to work environments. Highly recommend the text to anyone taking a management course or looking for a basic understanding of management practices.

I only used the second half of this book (CH16-26) for a principles of accounting 2 class so that is all I am reviewing. It covers everything from corporation equity; long-term liabilities and investments; consolidations; international transactions; cash flows; managerial accounting concepts and principles; budgeting; manufacturing costing (job order, process and standard); annual reports; cost-volume-profit relationships; differential analysis and product pricing; capital investment analysis, and responsibility accounting. This book is well-planned and the internet extras are worth it. There are narrated Power Point presentations, as well as check figures for the problems in each chapter. I really like the Excel templates, you can fill in boxes (it will correct automatically and tell you if your answer is right or wrong) then print them from the internet so you don't have to buy the study guide for worksheets. You do not have to have a code to use any of these resources. I am going to hang on to this book to use as a reference as I continue coursework.

Solid but give us some spreadsheets!

Review Date: 2008-03-05
Really liked the book overall, although I think it is weighted too heavily toward manufacturing and could beef up on services.

My main criticism is that i bought the book based on the assumption that the site would have excel spreadsheets to work the problems, etc, but this information is not available. (If you search inside the book, you will see the claim that spreadsheets are available on the site. They are only available to instructors)

Good for managers bad for students

I bought this book to help me studying for my part 3 CMA exam.

The reason I removed the fifth star from my rating is:
First : It does not have enough questions, or questions are irrelevant to the ones you get in a CMA exam. Besides, there are no answers given to help you evaluate your self.

Second: Though it has a good website for student support ... some main chapters are still under construction!!

My Conclusion is that If you are a manager, you will find this book very helpful more than any other book but if you are a student you better use another text book like Horngren .

Challenging Topics in Corporate Finance
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-06
As a student utilizing this text for class, I found it extremely insightful, as well as challenging in content. The book is subdivided in to various topib headings related to corporate finance, everything from debt and equity offerings to derivative risk management. After a chapter introduction outlining and reviewing pertinent academic information, there are several case studies on real companies. The book closes with three case studies which incorporate multiple topics highlighted in the book.

A definite MUST for MBA in Finance; but not for self-study

This is definitely the book of classic cases in Finance. Using Harvard case method, it covers a wide range of fundamental issues faced by today's finance executive or CFO. A must for MBA second course in Finance or advanced undergraduate. However, this textbook is lacking in a few pedagogical aspects. Firstly, in every section (key topic), there is no comprehensive chapter of important theories and key concepts (e.g. formulas) for students to brush up before embarking on the cases. Moreover, there are no check figures or guidelines (at the back) on how to tackle the problems. The format of the pages are rather dry and uninviting plus there are so many typo erroes in the financial statements. More importantly in this 1997 edition, the authors have decided to leave out the Carrefour case, which was an excellent example of cash flow management. Lots of important lessons missed out, especially from a multinational which has been very successful in today's global retail hypermarket industry. Our professor had to make photocopies from an earlier edition for our MBA. May be the authors can put back this case in future editions.....

Not a teach yourself book !!!

We used this case book in our MBA course for corporate finance. The real cases are exciting. The topics are very broad and ranging from cash budgeting to financial risk management. Most of the cases are supported with good background material like charts and income statements. The book is excellent for class discussions, but not for the ambituous reader who wants to teach himself corporate finance. There are simply no right or wrong answers why there's no solution provided. It's a great book to work with, but deadly boring if you want to read it page by page.

Good for undergraduates
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-01
The course topics are very useful for undergraduates and a good introduction to Corporate Finance and Accounting.

However, I would recommend the latter Chapters i.e. 9,10 and 11,12 be placed in other books to allow more emphasis on the earlier chapters. This probably will make the book also good for graduate courses/students especially now with the 150 credit hour accounting programs.

Other than that, its a well developed book!!!

I have read about the four principles and found them very true and practical. Although there are others who would include Funding or Finance as a separate element, here it is explictly discussed with intense details.

A good book for those Managers climbing the corporate ladder.

Wow, Buyer beware.

The DVD does NOT come with this book.

The DVD promoted on Roman numeral page v as free with the book does NOT come with the book and CANNOT be obtained.

the good folks at Amazon were blindsided by the publishers.

The publisher blew me off like dandruff on a dark suit when I requested the DVD. I even faxed the page out of the book that boasts about the DVD.

Wow, Buyer beware. You will never get the DVD promoted as free with book.

But if you are willing to pay extra $$$ you might get some secret special on-line help. But hey, wasn't I promised, written in the book, a free DVD?

Oh yeah, well they lied about that. Just cough up more than you paid for the book and they will give you on-line support, promise.

Fool me once.

This book provides a comprehensive coverage of various aspects of managerial accounting. The reader will appreciate the difference between managerial and financial accounting and is then guided step-by-step into the various facets of managerial accounting relevant to modern organizations.

The book is well written, well presented and has several useful and helpful examples that reinforces the concepts and ideas presented in the book. I found the book to be very practical and easy to read and understand. The book is a useful and handy reference for managers working in various firms including service, retail, manufacturing and non-profit organisations. Among the subjects covered include activity-based costing, target costing, the value chain, customer profitability analysis, job-order costing, budgeting and performance evaluation.

Overall, a useful and helpful book for managers in various organizations, students doing an MBA, studying accounting or business studies at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
