America's Housing Problem: An Approach to its Solution by Irving Welfield presents criteria for evaluating federal programs for housing production and housing assistance, measures these programs against the criteria, and discusses an alternative set of programs. The latter, he concludes, would achieve far better results than the existing efforts. As an example, his comparisons show that, by shifting to the proposed alternatives the same number of new units could be constructed and nine times more poor households could be assisted at no increase in cost. -- form book's back cover

Once again you will be delighted by the great artistic voice of George S. Irving as he narrates these truly witty scenes that ARE Patrick McManus! The tape only contains four stories, but each one is a necessary treasure for your McManus/Irving collection. The stories on this audiotape are: "How To Fish a Creek", "A Fine and Pleasant Misery", "Further Teachings of Rancid Crabtree", and "The Rescue."

Recommended for the woman who has definitely figured out her spouse, boyfriend, brother, dad, etc. and still can't believe it. MacManus takes us into the mind of the fisherman in this tale. Even my husband (who has difficulty laughing at himself) laughed at this tape despite himself. A great gift for anyone who's ever planned a fishing trip, bought a rod and reel, and especially for the boat owner's "widow."

While I do admit that these stories are no longer capable of scaring me, I also understand the fact that...this is a children's book. That being said, if you are not 12 and under, you might find some of the stories rather bland-- especially if you're a serious horror fan.
Anyway, this book is great for campfire/sleepover/Halloween party-type settings. They're pretty short, but still quite enjoyable. My father read these books to my siblings and I as children during the month of October, and they scared the crap out of us.
The illustrations....weird, scary, freaky stuff. Bottom line. In my opinion, the pictures are even scarier than the actual stories. I'm 26 now, and some of them still creep me out to this very day. So, if you're intending to read these stories aloud, then make sure that you show the pictures to add to the scare factor.
Overall, I still enjoy this collection of stories. I highly suggest giving them a shot.

My five year old went through a phase of liking scary books. These are the best collection out there once you are past the "easy reader" scary stories. The stories are short and some are even funny and so my five year old was able to handle them despite the fact that they are listed for a 9+ age group. Do note that many stories are very scary/morbid and if your child is easily frightened, wait till they are older.

Back in about 1995, my wife bought Scary Stories for our young son. I'd turn the lights off and tell them to him as I was tucking him in for the night. He'd scream bloody murder when I'd grab him. It was a lot of fun.
It's 2008 now and our son is in the Army, but he still remembers the Scary Story nights; and he can remember most of the stories too. I'm glad this collection is still around, and I hope I get to tell them all again to my grandkids.

I loved these books when I was little- this is what got me started off on my love for scary books/movies/tv shows. I still remember some of the stories from the books, especially one where the dark is creeping over the ceiling and walls, and they always seem to come to mind when I'm in the dark trying to sleep. The pictures still scare me and I'm 26 now. I'd recommend these books for anyone who loves scary stories- get those kids started off early! And they'll scare adults too...

I'm serious, when I was a kid I read these books and they scared me silly. The stories by themselves will set you on edge, but what I remember most is the illustrations. Even now just looking at the covers give me a little chill and makes me want to turn on all the lights I can find. THIS is the book that made me scared of the dark. Give it to your kids, pass on the trauma, for science, to keep psychiatrists in work, for America. If you don't like these books, the terrorists win!

The stories you will find in these books are the most terrifying I have ever read. As I understand it, they originate from American Folklore. This, in addition to Gammell's truly disturbing artwork, adds the minute shot of realism that transforms harmless fiction to something that reads more like a short, historical, tale of warning. They are told in a simple, blunt manner, giving the reader the impression that they are hearing a historical account. As a kid I was addicted to horror, but these were the tales that led to literally months of sleepless nights. If you are buying them for a child with a vivid imagination, prepare his or her parents' for the ensuing insomnia.
Near-perfect compilation of classic Scary Stories series!

This CD set is really a great find. I remember buying the original cassettes as a kid, after getting seriously scared by some of the creepiest stories I'd ever read. Combined with Stephen Gammell's hideous, yet thought provoking drawings, the books are bad/good enough themselves depending on your point of view! The only cons I have is that the collection doesn't contain *every* single story from the first book. I remember the original recordings didn't either. So I give it a four and a half. Nevertheless, George S. Irving's way of changing his voice from highs to lows, from quavering old lady to screaming fiend complement this nightmarish trio of books perfectly. Even listening to the CD alone in the dark, all by yourself... one can't help but get a few chills down the spine. I highly recommend getting a copy of the books themselves and reading along. I'm almost 28 years old and I still get freaked out from time to time at the thought of these. I would say my two favorites out of the whole bunch are "Me-Tie-Doughty-Walker!" and also "Somebody Fell From Aloft." Those scared me the most. Great books for campfire stories!

I was very impressed with this book. It is extremely informative. It has a small biography in the beginning, demostrations of exercises, and sample workouts for all levels. Why look anywhere but the top for advice on a subject, and it doesn't get any further up then Arnold for weight lifting. I am just starting on his Encyclopedia for Body Building book right now. A definite must have!

Somewhere between lines, he missed that one:
"I was big, because I was on steroids".
It's such a pity, that 95% of all athletes of that time (before 1990, when steroids were tagged "controlled substance" and officially equal to narcotics) used steroids. It was their greatest secret of performance. And only chosen few knew that secret.
Now we have that legacy, all of that pictures of {great} bodies, just to understand, that it's not possible to achieve that {excellence} without the drugs (so-called "gear" or "juice").
More than that... average professional bodybuilder spends $50k/year on some modern analogue of the drugs which again only few knows about, which allows them to pass steroid/doping tests. And which aren't forbidden yet (every year more and more new drugs get banned from the use, long after bodybuilders used them to win).
And millions of us look at that all with envy and desire to be like them. And popularity of sports and "healthy" life-styles substantially increases every year.
Oh, year, we are healthy, but can you sell us some kind of {diet} supplies, to be like them? Of course, we will.. especially because it's multi-BILLION industry of us to sell you drugs that never worked and never will THAT effective.
Bodybuilders are big, popular, girls like them, but it's not a secret, that most of them are impotent and don't forget they are paying the price but being testing animals, buying very expensive stuff off black market, most often very questionable quality. And nobody knows side-effects yet.
And yes, I read the book. All of it. And yes, Arnold was my lifetime HERO.
WAS.
Such a ... story.

I have made more progress with the advice in this book in the last month than my average year. After years of thinking I knew what i was doing at the gym, I finally feel like im on the right track with my body and my health.
Its also refreshing to read (and ironic since this book is 30 years old) people recommending moderate weight/high reps as opposed to the high-intensity school which I feel has its place in your routine, but just was not leading to muscle gain for me.
If you are interested in fitness, getting in shape or body building, I think this is required reading. It has also given me a tremendous amount of respect for Schwarzenegger who seems to have conquered everything in this world except the California legislature.

I first read this book back in the summer of '83, as a skinny kid, while in college. I was curious about bodybuilding before buying it, but after reading it this book actually inspired true change in me. I immediately began training using the dusty, dilapidated weight-set that sat down in the dank, beer-stenched fraternity house basement that I lived in during the summer. I then graduated to the university gym, and then to a real Gold's Gym- I was working out with real bodybuilders! It was such a rush to get into the true environment of pro bodybuilding. It took seemingly forever to put on muscle but one day it seemed to magically start to happen. It was like a dream come true. I used to sit at a bus-stop waiting to come home after a monsterous workout. I never remember ever feeling so exhausted in my life while waiting for the bus.
Anyway, I managed to get into beautiful shape and excelled in my studies and eventually reached the pinnacle of my profession...and bodybuilding was one element that helped, without a doubt. This book by Arnold and friends was so inspirational to me and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to transform their body/lives or anyone who wants to peer into the world of the greatest bodybuilder of all time. You won't regret buying this book. If you happen to be reading these reviews, Arnold, thank you for the memories. I will always consider you as being one of the top greats of sports and success stories..

As other reviewers have mentioned, the stories themselves aren't really as scary, but the illustrations are nightmare-inducing. I first read these when I was an impressionable, wee lass of 8 and they scared me to death and really changed my reading tastes. I'm a horror-junkie because of these books! Harold is the most unsettling of the tales and even now, 21 years of age and heading off to professional school in fall, I'm still freaked out by it. These books aren't just for kids. Adults can read them as well and still be freaked out to death and I only have one thing to say to that: Thanks, Mr. Gammell and Schwartz. You guys rock.

My opinion of Scary Stories 3: More Tales to Chill Your Bones is about the same as the second (and first for that matter). The pictures remain the most disturbing aspect of the book...the rest makes a fine initiation for young readers into creepy, scary, spine-tingling urban legends, tales of terror, ect... I'm glad to be done with the series and while Girl isn't ready for these yet (she's basing not wanting to read it on the pictures alone), I'll happily check them out for her (or buy a boxed set) when the time comes (and I'm sure it will). I think once she gets past the pictures, she'll have no problem with the text, there's nothing she hasn't really encountered in one for more another in her reading or TV watching over the last 9 years...and since we frequently watch shows about urban legends and ghosts, I doubt much here will shock or upset her. Three stars for this one too.
Yet another excellent story in this series!

Why would any adult let a child aged 9-12 read a story where a wife takes the liver of the dead lady next door and feeds it to her mean husband? Why would anyone with any common sense of decency allow any child to read about killing dogs, children getting a gun to scare off a ghost, and an adult KILLING A CHILD slowly & painfully because of grudge by using a "voodoo" type spell for revenge. What is wrong with the man who wrote these books? My opinion is that Mr. Schwartz is a disturbed and depraved person and he should seek help - not write childrens books. Even more is wrong with the reviewer who decided these disgusting and morally void stories were appropriate for young children. It seems to me that Mr. Schwartz gets his thrills by taking away the innocence of a young and naive audience. I hope he's happy with the psychological damage he is responsible for. PARENTS BEWARE of this author in your home, your schools & your public library.

Well, when it comes to books they, aren't my thing. you see, I don't like to read but when I read the book They Shoot Canoes Don't They by Patrick F Mcmanus, now I like to read a little bit better. The book is about this guy Patrick Mcmanus. He tells these little stories about what stupid things he has done and or this that have happed to him or his friends and family. Like this one little story his wife goes through the garage tossing junk in the garbage and she finds this one box with his childhood memories and the he tells a little story about what happened. It all starts when he first meets his wife and he takes her hunting. She puts on his antler tag as a bracelet and can't get it off then he tells a different, story but Ill leave the rest for you to find out what happens.

This collection of short stories is one of the funniest I have ever read. To fully understand the humor in these stories, you must enjoy outdoor activites and appreciate first-class sarcasm. Included in this book are about twenty-five chorts, all exploding with laughter at every turn of page.
These stories are about the personal experiences of the author, and the people that he is close to. He writes about hunting, fishing, camping, and other outdoor activites. His stories are so personal because he is writing about his past; as he was growing up, and his present. In addition to laughing at him, the reader also laughs at himself, because as you have said, thought, or done the very same thigns that he is writing about. One story in paticular describes his thoughts and fellings about getting glasses. At first McManus attributes the change in the world's clarity to communists, subsequently he is diagnosed with an astgmatism. He does not think that a big game guide should wear glasses, so he does not confide his new spectacles to his friends, until he realizes that an adult mentor of his also has glasses. Normally a person getting glasses would not be considered humor, but when written by this autor almost anything becomes funny.
In addition to entertaining, these stories also teach the reader. A few lessons that can be learned are: take time to enjoy the simple things in life, laugh at yourself, and take time out of your normal schedule to go outdoors and spend time with family and freinds. If you enjoy a good laugh pick up "They Shoot Canoes Don't They," or one of his many other novels.
