Sally Forth is my favourite comic and I think Mr. Howard has one of the best senses of humour. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, especially since my local paper no longer carries this strip and I am starved for the hilarious episodes of the life of the Forth clan. I know there are old Sally Forth books which are no longer in printing. Please consider re-releasing these books so I may spend more hilarious hours with Sally, Ted & Hillary.

Well, I find this book interesting and that is about it. It does not really help me in any way because it does not give any clue as how to do that. It is simply not deep enough and leaves to many unanswered questions. It is a good start for newcomers to recovery though.

This book deals a little too much with feelings and I think that makes it a bit boring. Me, I prefer the more enchanting books that do tell you of upcoming events! This is probably more accurate, though, but still. :)

It's an okay book and definately a must have because if you're into dream books/dictionaries you do need more than one reference! It's a nice addition!

I think that if this book merged with a more traditional one they would make a more complete reference.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have always loved dream books but never felt fully satisfied... until now. I have been waiting for a dream book like this since I was old enough to interpret my dreams. I used to go over 3 or 4 different dream books to decipher my dreams but I finally only need one. Somehow Kelly managed to be the first person in the universe to make a genius book that covers everything in one place.

Wonderful!

This is one of those rare books that has adult humor, but still seems to be written for the children. My 3 1/2 year old asked me to read it a second time (which is rare), and my 1 1/2 year old enjoyed the bright illustrations. And well, I had to chuckle at the familiar story line. It's so nice when one book meets all of our needs. If your child is young and hasn't started this behavior - don't let that scare you away from buying the book - out of fear that it will teach them something bad. Believe me, these instincts are dormant in your child. Eventually, he/she will start the bedtime stall just because...

For anyone looking to purchase this book it is a must! When I first checked this book out in the library for my 2 year old daughter I found I kept reading it to her for bed- over and over again. Even if she was done hearing it. I laughed every time I read it. My absolute favorite parts were "I am practically positive my parents are having a party" & "Luckily the water idea ended up being a two-part plan. After drinking it, I got out of bed again and said I had to go to the bathroom (while her duck slippers are looking up and holding an umbrella)". The illustrations are brilliant, even though my first glace impression was not significant. I adore this book. Every parent needs to own Katie Davis's I hate to go to bed. Brilliant!

Know anyone who HATES to go to bed?

Ms. Davis's young heroine simply HATES to go to bed! SOMETHING exciting MUST be going on downstairs! After all, why else would SHE have to go to bed and her PARENTS not? Why, it's just plain unfair! Her parents are probably down there RIGHT NOW, just waiting for her to sleep so they can throw a huge party without her!

Or so the young lady who is at the center of this story is convinced. So, if you can't beat 'em, INFILTRATE! Trying a whole battery of stealthy and sometimes sneaky techniques, she attempts to make her way downstairs to find out just what IS going on down there! She tries every trick in the book, from just plain sneaking out of her room to the ol' I-Need-to-go-to-the-Bathroom trick (which, it is noted, has been tried the whole world over!). Still, nothing works. The giant binoculars made out of cardboard tubes proves to be ineffective (though sharp eyed parental readers may note the headline on the father's newspaper that yells "CHILD STAYS IN BED! HISTORY MADE! ") as does the Drink of Water Technique.

At one point, our heroine DOES manage to get downstairs, only to have her suspicions confirmed! AH HA! Dad's dressed up in a wizard costume and Mom is hanging streamers from the celing!

What? Oh... Dad's just dressed in his P.J.s and Mom is flossing her teeth... You mean NOTHING happens after she goes to bed? Where the heck is the the party!

This is a wonderful book, both for children who can

identify with a young child who hates to go to bed, as well as any parent who HAS a child who hates to go to bed and is convinced they're missing out on something. The illustrations are simple, very colorful and often simply hysterical (the picture of the girl dragging herself across the bedroom floor, eyes crossed and tongue hanging out for a glass of water is one of my personal favorites). Ms. Davis has created a small masterpiece. Highly recommended.

I don't think there is one child that has never put up a fight about going to bed. The book I Hate to Go to Bed is about a little girl that refuses to go to bed because she is afraid that she is missing something while she is sleeping. She believes that every night after she goes to sleep her parents throw a huge party and just pretend that they don't. The book explains how this girl comes up with different ways to catch her parents have this "party". She first pretends to be really tired and pretends to be asleep. Then she sneaks out of her bed, but her parents catch her. Another plan was to get up because she was "thirsty", but her parents saw right through that trick because, "apparently it had been tried before". This plan actually ended up being a "two-part" plan. She then thinks that she catches her parents having a party. She thinks that her father is in a costume and her mother is putting up streamers. In reality her father was in his pajamas and her mother was flossing her teeth. This is when the little girl decides that she is going to have a party herself. Her party is going to be the best party ever; it is going to be a party in her dreams. This is a children's book that tells a creative and yet entirely believable story through both the language and pictures provided. This picture book describes a story as told through the eyes of what appears to be a five or six year-old girl. The story line is believable for both adults and children. The characters of both the girl and the parents react and behave the same way that any person would think. The way that it was written and the pictures that were provided are enjoyable for a person of any age. This book was both written and illustrated by Katie Davis. It was written in 1999 and published in the United States. There is one part in the book that is not "original work". There is one excerpt in one of the pictures of the lyrics "these boots are made for walking". Other than that the book is an "original work" and, according to me, of high excellence. I gave this book five stars because of the way I found myself captured in the story. While reading this book I remember when I was young and didn't want to go to bed for fear of what I was missing. I think that this book is amusing to all because children can relate to it now, while adults and looks back and remember what it was like to be five years old and "hate to go to bed!"

Definitely a classic in the genre. I have only read a few Alan Dean Foster novels, but this one and The Man Who Used The Universe are in my "worth-5-reads" category. Being a computer nerd myself, I always enjoy escapist stories where the nerd gets cool powers and has adventures with pretty chicks. Harrison's To The Stars trilogy is one of my favorites too. I only have good things to say about The I Inside!

This was one of the most enjoyable books I've ever read. I'm not going to argue about its depth; however, I had so much fun losing myself in the life of Eric Abbot and his quest for the woman he can't help loving. Despite the insurmountable odds he faced he never quit, all the while taking a rational approach to all of his new found abilities. If anyone wants to just sit down for a few hours and take a trip in a great adventure of love and daring-do, read this book. It IS a shame it doesn't get more recognition.

In January I had the wonderful experience of living with a family in a village about one hour south of Bamako, Mali. When I returned I happened to see this book featured on Reading Rainbow and knew I needed to have it. It totally captures the feel of life in a family compound - how you are greeted by everyone, meal time, brushing teeth, time together in the evening, and the beautiful clothing that the women wore. And of course the charming story of what happens when a child loses a tooth in Mali is great - and true. If you have been to Mali you will love it because it captures the spirit of Mali, and if you haven't it will give you a glimpse of live in Mali.

Kids can relate to this book!

I highly recommend this book for K-2 grades, because they are losing all their baby teeth during that time. I really enjoyed watching my students of all cultural backgrounds relate to the African/African-American girl in this story. The pictures are also wonderfully vibrant!
I'm an Elementary Art teacher, and I read this book to my 1st graders during an African art and culture unit. It helped them to imagine that they were traveling to Africa just as the little girl in the story does. It is also a great introduction about how different cultures do things in different ways! In this story, the tooth fairy brings a chicken instead of money!
My students also really appreciated that this book was originally written by an 8 year old girl, and later illustrated by her Dad. There is a picture of them in the back of the book, and my kids loved seeing the faces responsible for writing and illustrating the book!

Review Date: 2007-04-11
The book challenges children to consider that losing teeth occurs in the life of all children around the world, but moves them beyond the notion of the "Tooth Fairy" practices of western culture. The story is the account of one little girl who travels to visit her extended family in Africa and loses her tooth while there. Her grandmother models the family's practice of putting a lost tooth under a gourd. Instead of coins, she finds her tooth is replaced with a hen and rooster, which proves to be eventful throughout her time in Africa.

I Lost My Tooth in Africa, is a charming story of a young girl from Portland, Oregon who visits her family in Mali, Africa. There, she loses her loose tooth and receives a special present from the "African tooth fairy." The text paints a vivid description of not only the way things look in Mali, but also of the way people live there. The story, which includes some words in Bambara, the native language of that region, is rich with African culture. At the back of the book is a glossary of Bambara words, as well as the words to an African Goodnight Song, and a recipe for African Onion Sauce.

The text is beautifully complimented by ceramic-tile illustrations done by award-winning artist Baba Wague Diakite, who happens to be the fourteen-year-old author's father. Reading the book, I would have never guessed that the author was a teenager. She did a very fine job. I hope that we will be seeing more stories by this truly talented duo.

I Lost My Tooth in Africa is an excellent way to introduce children, ages 4-8, to African culture. My five-year-old daughter enjoyed the book. I think other kids will enjoy it too.

The colors are bright. The book jacket and pages are satiny smooth. Dar Hosta's medium is collage and both books are lovely examples of that technique. Art teachers are often looking for additional examples to share with students besides Eric Carle and Ezra Jack Keats. She also uses oil pastel, colored pencil and digital effects to complete her work. The staring eyes of the animals in the books are digital.

I enjoyed I Love the Night. Her words flow creating a gentle, quiet, night-time atmosphere. Teachers can use the books to teach adjectives, adverbs, and alliteration. Each page is full of them.

Even the most stubborn bedtime resister will fall asleep and dream of soaring with the owl, singing soulfully with the whippoorwills, and eating fruit with the fruit bats that carry Hosta's lyrical words from page to beautifully illustrated page. The swish of bats, the "fabulously fabulous" joy and rapture of frogs at the magnificence of the night, and the gentle sounds of Hosta's words will lull your child to sleep.

Every once in a while, a diamond sparkles on top of the slush pile. I LOVE THE NIGHT authored and illustrated by University of Missouri-Columbia creative writing graduate, Dar Hosta is one of these rare finds.

Her spare writing and little details sparkle with wit and warmth. In a language geared to a young audience, she awakens nightly creatures. Her use of double adjectives:
" marvelously marvelous - delightfully delightful" emphasize her marvel at the beauties of the night. Under the blue glow of the moon, you become acquainted with all kinds of earthly creatures from fireflies, crickets, a giant octopus, frogs, raccoons, to of course an owl.

The book's illustrations are a real showcase of an amazing talent. Combining collage, oil pastel, colored pencil and a digital graphics tablet, she has created brilliant scenes and fantastic creatures that nearly leap off the page. Every page is a labor of love, although
my favorite spreads are the frog and the raccoon.

A fun thing to experiment with children is to have them try and guess what material Dar Hosta has used for her collages. For example, the moon (and here I am guessing!) is made of lint sheets for the dryer. Also the frog collage could be made of kitchen paper towels among other found objects.

Dar Hosta's art in I LOVE THE NIGHT dominates the book giving it a quality that will attract young and older readers alike. I LOVE THE NIGHT is a true diamond on your child's night table that will indeed make for a sweet dreamy night. No wonder this book has earned the Teachers Choice Award Learning Magazine for the Family 2004!

I came across this book while searching for the lyrics to the 'Bushel & A Peck' song from the 'Guys and Dolls' soundtrack. My grandmother used to sing the song to my mother and my mother used to sing the song to my sister and I. In keeping tradition, we both now sing the song to our children and I was so excited when I found this book! The kids love the little duck characters as they sing the song through the vibrantly colored pages. We all 'doodle oodle oodle' through the end!! If you like the song - - you will absolutely love the book!!

Love this book!

My 2 1/2 year old twins love it when I sing this song to them, so I was thrilled to find a book that illustrated it. The pictures are bright and fun, and it's always nice when the publisher includes the lyrics/music, as it does in this one.
