I bought Seagull Sam to add to my collection of Sea coast Books to read to my Grandchildren when they come to Visit us on the Maine Coast. It was a favorite of my "almost" five year old grandson. Although the concept of Sam really flying (or not) was a little beyond the two and three year olds, they still enjoyed the wonderful illustrations.

UNCLE SAM'S CAMELS: THE JOURNAL OF MAY HUMPHREYS STACEY SUPPLEMENTED BY THE REPORT OF EDWARD FITZGERALD BEALE tells of how the U.S. Congress funded the importation of camels in 1855, to test their fitness for military purposes in the Southwest. It was Beale who led the first and only 'camel corps' from Texas to California in 1857, joined by the then-19-year-old May Stacey, who kept a journal of their travels and experiences. UNCLE SAM'S CAMELS is that journal, reproducing the expedition stories and returning to print a title originally published in 1929, still the definitive text on the experience to date.
