With accounts of the Battle of the Atlantic being written by such notable authors as Donald Macintyre who, as a serving Royal
Navy Officer earned no fewer than three DSOs during that battle, being favoured by many historians, this particular account
may have been overlooked by those with an interest in such historical events.
This book, however, tackles the subject from a completely different perspective and, instead of competing with those other works, stands to complement them instead. Just a glance at the Contents page will show the reader how these authors have tackled the subject in the most complete fashion - from beginning to end. A further glance at the 2 pages of bibliography and other sources consulted will also leave the reader in no doubt as to the thoroughness of the work produced here. That research includes material from Britain, USA and Germany.
In many ways this book is the complete account of the Battle of the Atlantic instead of, perhaps, being the personal accounts of those who were there.
From beginning to end the book is well illustrated with historic photographs (I particularly liked the one of the image of Hitler being removed from Madam Tussaud's waxworks), cartoons, maps and diagrams. Altogether an excellent account.

It is the architecture of a city that makes it distinctively recognizable. "Building New Brunswick: An Architectural History"
by John Leroux (a professional architect and a native of New Brunswick) is a richly enhanced and visual history embellished
with photographs, drawings, architectural renderings and engravings that portray the history of the buildings and other structures
that give the Canadian city of New Brunswick its particular shape, style, and appearance to day. Leroux draws upon his interviews
with many of the original architects of New Brunswick's structures created in a post-1945 era, including first-person accounts
of particular buildings and working conditions at the time of their construction. An informed and informative work of meticulous
research, "Building New Brunswick" is a superbly written and presented account that is strongly recommended for academic library
Architectural Studies reference collections, as well as architectural student supplemental reading lists.

Hughes' American Model

Hughes' American Model, July 3, 2005
Kent Hughes has an optimistic and realistic vision of the economic future of the United States. His optimism is rooted in confidence that future leadership will return to the bipartisan American model of the last two decades of the twentieth century. This American model for generating competitiveness was keyed to the adoption of advanced technology under a government/private partnership accompanied by fiscal and financial conservatism. Hughes' optimism may be realistic if future leadership and the country as a whole respond to current crises with the kind of shared risks and benefits approach that was evident in meeting the crises of WWII and the last two decades of the twentieth century.
Hughes provides chapter and verse in the development and success of the bipartisan American model of the Reagan/Bush/Clinton years. A Time Line appendix details the legislation and policies that underpinned the development of the American model. In 1980, Congressman Gilles Long, leading the Democratic Caucus, provided political support for a technology-based competitiveness policy. The Young Commission on Industrial Competition under President Reagan broadened and accentuated this policy. Alan Bromley, Science Advisor in the first Bush administration, was a key figure in continuing the competitiveness policy featuring emphasis on critical technologies. In the Clinton years, the bipartisan competitiveness policy was enhanced by deeper government/private-sector partnerships in technological development, by reduction of trade barriers, and by adoption of conservative fiscal and financial policies.
In the second Bush administration, new crises in security, fiscal, financial and energy policies have emerged. Hughes is optimistic that a return of a bipartisan American model stressing both efficiency and equity is possible and could be effective. Essential to reviving this American model is acceptance of a broad policy of shared risks and benefits. Those who live in the "City on the Hill" must share their benefits with the less powerful in order to spur competitiveness. Hughes finds improvement in efficiency and equity are both essential to the success of the American model. In this, Hughes taps into a strong theme in western philosophy - the Augustinian view that a universal and equitable society is necessary to assure progress.

Jane Hughes is perhaps the most brilliant mind in the field of global economic markets and international banking today. "Carnival
on Wall Street" is a perfect example of her ability to present her profound insights and incisive analysis in a way that is
utterly readable. This book is a must-read for anybody interested in the 1990's financial boom or the movement of markets
in general. Also, her book "New Tigers and Old Elephants" is the authoritative volume on development in the 21st century.

I remember finding this book in my mom's collection back when I was about 7 or 8 yrs old, and it's probably the reason I
became a horror reader. The stories are all well-known classics (The Monkey's Paw being my favorite of the bunch), but it's
the artwork that makes this a must-have. Each story is beautifully/grossly illustrated, and if they wouldnt scare guests,
I'd frame the pages themselves! (Ya I'm sick!) If you can find it, get it!

In that title, you see I emphasized ease of reading. The best part of Everyman's Bible Commentary is that it is so highly
accessible. This is an ideal set to have to give to lay leaders in the church or even to a parishoner who has questions. The
series excels at answering those burning questions and does so without scholarship too heavy to wade through.
