In settings around the globe, The Rheingold Legacy provides a fine story of intrigue and dramatic events in military and political settings. Even though the story is fiction, it is written with plausible situations backed by the authors' deep knowledge of military and intelligence operations. The characters are well-defined and totally compelling. This is another outstanding novel in the Mallory Chronicles.

Ron Howard's Quest
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-29

Ron's poetry is meticulously written in meter and rhyme, but it is in reading the entire book that its meaning is found. His book is a continuum of questions about life's journey, the world, society, the universe, love, God, and all that comes into his mind and heart as he travels onward seeking answers.

Ron is not content with the world as it is, but seeks both to define and change it for a world where love is the perfect key to happiness.

As he describes through his poetic words his lack of hope, pain, loss, or despair of finding that love in his environment, he takes the reader step by step into his life on a philosopher's internal journey to find the key,

In the final chapters of the book, peace seems to settle over his spirit as his questions are answered and life becomes meaningful for him. This is a beautiful quest for love and fulfillment expressed in poetry.

This movie is just superb. The story is great, acting is great, and the historical accuracy is perfect. I loved the attention to detail that went into this movie. Definitely a must see even if you're not a space or NASA buff.

A very good and realistic movie about APOLLO 13 and human determination

Review Date: 2008-10-17
The movie APOLLO 13 and of course the real odyssey that took place in 1970 are more than just a near space tragedy and an aborted manned flight to the moon. They are about human determination, intelligence, cooperation and the fight for life in time of a very big crisis and challenge which in case of APOLLO 13 created a miracle. Returning safely back to Earth was a miracle because after an oxygen tank exploded in the service module en route to the moon, the spacecraft was so crippled that, not only was the moon landing cancelled, but the astronauts in APOLLO 13 together with staff of Houston mission control had to think and act fast to solve many of the lethal problems that emerged in the spacecraft. The movie has historical value as well because it dramatizes excellently the APOLLO 13 adventure which certainly is a very important event in the history of manned space flights. I highly recommend everybody to watch this DVD, not just to people who are interested in manned space flights but also to people who want to see what miracles human determination and intelligence can achieve.

Perfect For Everyone (especially Parents & Classrooms)

This is one of my all-time favorite movies, and for about a million reasons. But I'll just share a few.

Chances are good that you already know the basic premise: Three astronauts embark on a space mission to the moon, but technical complications not only jeopardize the mission, but their lives as well. Back on Earth, the Mission Control team based out of Houston work around the clock to get the astronauts home safely.

Based on real events (and mostly faithful, according to those who lived through them), the story does so many things right that most movies from the "disaster genre" or "rescue genre" to wrong.

First and foremost, we actually care about these characters. Director Ron Howard and the screenwriters dedicate equal time to the people and historical events on Earth as the intense drama that occurs in space. Besides the expected focus on the Mission Control Team who tirelessly work to get the Apollo 13 crew home, there's even a "prologue" of sorts before the April 13th, 1970 launch. Perhaps the most notable moment from these opening scenes is when Jim Lovell (played by Tom Hanks) must decide whether to stick up for a potentially sick co-pilot (risking his chances of going to space), or to opt for a replacement. Or how about seeing Lovell's youngest daughter almost being too depressed over The Beatles' breakup to go see her father's broadcast from space? APOLLO 13 doesn't just delay the suspenseful scenes like JAWS or ALIEN do. Don't get me wrong, those are great movies, but again, Earth and space are equally important as the other in this story.

What history buffs will most appreciate is the political and historical attention to detail. Our three astronuats (played terrifically by Hanks, Bill Paxton, and Kevin Bacon) are portrayed as everyday people with their own ambitions and personalities. These guys like to drink and embrace their women as much as they venture into the unknown. The Houston Mission Control director Gene Kranz (a superb Ed Harris) is introduced in a very unusual way --- a NASA vest arrives in a parcel from his wife; the camera follows the gift box, and once the vest (ridiculed by most of the staff) is worn, then we see Kranz's face. And Jim Lovell's wife Marylin (Kathleen Quinlan in another great role) does way, way more than just sob at home over her husband's danger in space. I've always wondered this question: How does an endangered man's wife keep the family together while they may never see their father again? APOLLO 13 answers this little factoid, among many other pieces of info. Every character contributes to the story, even the forgotten NASA individuals who took every precaution in split-second timing to get their pilots home. The modern equivalent of APOLLO 13 might actually be the TV show 24. Rather than focus on what went wrong, the film wisely just lets the characters say, "Okay, something's wrong, and we better move quick or else..."

The true star of APOLLO 13 isn't even the special effects, which indeed are still impressive. Actually, what becomes the foreground of the picture is all of the scientific detail that goes into solving the horrifying problem of getting three men trapped in a fragile spacecraft back to Earth. APOLLO 13 does a perfect job in helping us understand what's going on at every second of the crisis. News telecasts (some archival footage, some reenacted) show TV experts and old interviews that viewers at home would've seen. The Mission Control crew in Houston speak an unbelievable amount of lingo that I'm not sure I understood everything they said. But then when you see them draw on chalkboards, or put together models. And even if you don't understand what the technicians are saying, their vocal tone & behavior will make it clear. Simply put, anybody can understand what's going on in APOLLO 13, from the cultural events to the space sequences. Rather than insult your intelligence, APOLLO 13 puts it to work, and makes you a smarter person because of it.

I'll leave the rest for you to discover, but I want to give a final recommendation to any educators or concerned parents that are reading this review. In addition to a fabulous wealth of extras that everyone should check out, this 2-disc includes the IMAX version of APOLLO 13. This IMAX features slightly better video & audio quality, but the great thing about this version is that it's about 15 minutes shorter. The scenes that were cut from this IMAX version were mainly the ones that might offend parents, meaning you won't hear any curse words or see couples making out with each other. This film that was released in theaters was originally PG-13 for a couple days, so if you're concerned about the content your kids watch, the IMAX cut isn't going to offend anybody. Plus, this IMAX version removed some of the scenes on Earth that came before the space launch. So, if you just want to get to the "good stuff", then you have an alternative version.

APOLLO 13 is perfect in every way. It's exciting, educational. uplifting, well-crafted, well-acted, and an important chapter in American history. I don't really care about what happens in space, and I personally hate science. But if a film can take a subject I despise and win me over, then I owe it to the filmmakers to share it with every person I possibly can. Decades from now, APOLLO 13 is going to hold up incredibly well with future audiences. There are so many movies coming out that it's hard for new film buffs to know which ones to pick. APOLLO 13 doesn't deserve to be forgotten.

Apollo13: The Story of REAL Heroes

Okay, for you technophiles, Universal did a good job in the transfer to DVD. The colors are vivid and the picture is razor sharp. Sound quality is great and the overall experience is worth the price of admission. Save your money and buy the single disc set. The second disc is an edited IMAX version and the "extras" on the second disc are so so. All of the "good" extras are on the single disc version.

Now for the REAL story. Plain and simple, these guys were heroes in every sense of the word. They risked their lives for what they believed in, without heavenly financial compensation (they got their regular pay, plus flight pay, plus hazardous duty pay) In today's dollars that about $300 flight pay and $125 a month to risk your life. Many of the men in this program had families.

Truly a contrast to today's heroes (Sports Figures) who act like spoiled brats and cry if they get a hang-nail. All this, while collecting a salary the would support 100 families in the US. I'd like to see any of today's heroes maintain their composure while everything around them is failing. If you lose a ball game, there is always next year. If you "lose" in space, you're dead.

I grew up in the 60's with the space program and this film is a true testiment to the courage, skill, dedication, and selflessness of the entire NASA team.

Kind of a interesting closing point. Take note when Tom Hanks (Comm. Jim Lovell) is on the carrier deck after splash down/pick-up. He shakes the hand of a Navy Captain (left side of frame). That is THE Jim Lovell (Captain, USN Retired) and he is wearing HIS original Navy uniform, still fits him after all these years. Nice touch on the part of Director Ron Howard and great tribute film to the men who gave their all for their country and each other.

WHY THE MISSING SCENES???

Being a big follower of the space program since the mid-1960s, I was really excited when Apollo 13 was released..first on VHS, then to DVD. But on both the DVD-released versions, why are there scenes missing? One that I noticed right away is when Barbara Lovell(the Lovell's eldest daughter) doesn't want to go to Mission Control to watch the TV broadcast from space. Presumably because she is upset over the Beatle's breakup. Then much of the TV broadcast itself from the VHS version is missing. There were more missing, as well. It was a little disconcerting..especially with the "anniversary" edition. But the essence of the story..the triumph of the human spirit in the face of extraordinary odds...still remains true.

True Coming of Age by Dr. John Chirban

What do Maya Angelou, Lucille Ball, Tom Hanks, Diane Sawyer and Jay Leno have in common? They have all provided exclusive personal insights during their interviews with Dr. John Chirban, which are incorporated in his "True Coming of Age." Not only were the interviews with these famous celebrities riveting and heart wrenching, but they provided a wonderful framework for the meaning of true coming of age and establishing our True Self.

By using various exercises throughout the chapters to exemplify and illustrate the True Self in which we are all capable of achieving, this book proved to be an informative as well as interactive masterpiece.

This might sound a bit surreal but after reading Dr. Chirban's True Coming of Age, I have a new outlook on life. I try to live each day to its fullest capacity and try to put minor stressors in the "back burner." This book has enabled me to feel a sense of inner peace which I had never allowed myself to experience before. This is a must read for everyone!

An honest and encouraging look at what's possible for us humans

Review Date: 2005-11-05
In reading True Coming of Age, what impresses me most is that the advice is so honest. It really packs a punch because Dr. Chirban doesn't try to oversimplify things. He talks about life pretty much how it is, and while that's not always neat and tidy, you really feel a very organic power from the book because what he's saying is true. It's not like some of those other books that try to turn everything into a formula.

He talks about an amazing transformation in his parents when they both got cancer when they were old. It's a cool story because you think old people can't change, but his parents became buddies and started appreciating life in all these new ways. I feel like Dr. Chirban was there watching this happen, amazed himself and getting to know his parents in many new ways. I imagine him feeling the urge to know how it works, how people really change, how tragedy or the thought of death brings new life out of people, how to deeply connect with each other - and deciding to write a book to capture the truth of the process for others to understand.

I don't get the sense of a prefabricated message he knew he was going to find when he started. He doesn't go too far in interpreting the case studies he uses; he stays pretty close to the ground and draws out some clear but strong conclusions that add to the picture of what this coming of age is about. In his interviews with celebrities, as well, I picture him before these amazing people with an open mind, hearing the truth that came out of their stories.

The book has a lot in it. Instead of providing a self-help formula to digest and memorize, it's a book of richness to delve into and re-center ourselves within the reminders of what meaningful life looks and feels like.

True Coming of Age is so well written, it is reality in the making for any reader seeking insight into the self.  I found that here is a book so beautifully crafted that almost anyone can enjoy its healthy, gentle way of drawing us and encouraging us to reach for our goals and dreams.  Often, for many, a book may seem too challenging or even threatening.  But here, written as it is, we find understanding of any apprehensions we may have.  Dr. Chirban, a most gifted writer, is quickly recognized as not only being knowledgeable in psychology and theology, but most familiar with the fundamental quirks of the mind.  With certainty we realize that a steady, knowing hand wrote the words that compel and encourage improvement without stress.  Emotional maturity is attainable through insights gained throughout the book.  Strength of spirit is fostered by helping us shed fears, as well as our often long established "hang-ups."  The patience we learn allows us to improve our relationships.  Indeed, by personal improvement, we make the world a better place.

Early on, Dr. Chirban helps us understand aspects of our makeup often ignored, and successfully raises our desire to improve.  In so many ways he shows us how to question the self, assess the self and improve the self.  We begin to sense a wholesome process taking place as we read words that trigger so many insights.  Realizations do not often come easy, but here, plentiful as they are, we soon bask in the freedom they give us.  True Coming of Age is a gift, a present to give to our selves ... and surely, a wonderful gift of enlightenment to give to friends and to our loved ones.

I've read it cover to cover twice after receiving it as a gift a few months ago, and regularly return to it. The chapters are insightful and interesting, but the exercises are what differentiate it from other books in might otherwise be lumped in with in the "Self-Help" section. Suffice to say it was just the thing to knock me off a personal plateau I had been stuck on for too long. If your relationship with the world could bear some scrutiny and improvement, you'll never forget this book.

Among the increasing number of books purporting to connect complexity to business, this one shines. If an organization takes nothing more than an understanding of co-evolution away from this book, they will be well served. And there is a great deal more to be mined for those organizations looking for ways to make innovation a way of life. A powerful and rigorous approach in spite of its Eurocentric underpinnings. Sherman's connection to the Santa Fe Institute combine with impressive business credentials and an encyclopedic philosophical mind to create a deep resource for exploring an exciting new way to think about business.

TEACH YOUR COMPANY TO PREPARE, ADAPT, AND CHANGE FASTER

Review Date: 1999-03-31
I am a believer that organizational systems share much with biological systems. This idea struck me on the head the first time I visited the Galapagos. That trip made it clear that adaptation can occur very quickly and that more than one form of adaptation can occur in different directions at the same time, based on the environments that exist. I am also reminded of research that I recently read suggesting that we cannot accept or remember new ideas if we have not had previous experience with them. That is why it becomes so critical to prepare for change, to ask questions from many different perspectives to create ambiguity, and to present many different environments or alternate futures to create unpredictability. OPEN BOUNDARIES is a great book to read after THE LIVING COMPANY which describes how scenario planning was developed and why Shell was the only company prepared to do well during the Arab oil embargo. Complexity thinking really succeeds when you find a win-win solution - you will come out ahead no matter what happens. Another book you should look at that uses eight steps (revolving, not linear) to develop the best possible ideal practices for key activities assuming unpredictability of many things is THE 2,000 PERCENT SOLUTION. With these three, you are well on your way to removing the stalls blocking OPEN BOUNDARIES to become THE LIVING COMPANY and to reach THE 2,000 PERCENT SOLUTIONS for future success

The best integration of complexity and management yet!!

Review Date: 1998-10-31
Open Boundaries represents a successful and all too rare attempt to synthesize the lessons of complexity science with the day-to-day lives of managers. Where many authors are content to describe science metaphors and leave it to the reader to draw out life's lessons, Sherman and Schultz take the opposite tack. They begin by asking what problems their readers' face and then address those problems from a perspective of complexity science and philosophy. How and what we think shapes and effects what we do. Complexity science has much to contribute to change our units of thought. Open Boundaries will change your life as a thoughtful and reflective manager -- just let it.

Dr. Kirksey's book is a good companion to the new book, THE NEW GUIDEBOOK FOR PASTORS. It is a must for every pastor's library.

Dr. Kirksey has given an anthology of preaching and preachers that will be invaluable to every student of preaching. This fresh reminder of the call to ministry, and the committment to expository preaching and teaching is invaluable to the foundations of a new church. May we see the day as biblical preaching, God-called visionary leadership, sound growth principles, and just hard work will raise up millions of new churches who see their calling as world mission strategy centers, every Christian leader as a mission strategist, and every believer a kingdom mission agent in the marketplace. Not only am I glad to have the book, I am a personal friend of Ron Kistler's wife Virgie. Virgie and I worked at the same company a few years back. It was interesting listening to all the stories she told as I was reading the book. The book makes for very enjoyable reading. I intend to share it with my family and friends now that I have my own copy of Ron's book. I treasure Virgie like one of my family members. I wish I would have had the opportunity to meet Ron Kistler.

A Good Read-Much different than other HH books

I really enjoyed this book. Though not as informative as I would have liked, it gave an insight into Howard Hughes ranging from mildy compassionate to sadistic. The books expands from focussing exclusively on Hughes to highlighting the adverse affect of Hughes actions on Ron and his family. The surprising thing was Ron gets sentimental even after he was treated so poorly by his employer, but, it gave you an essence of how captivating Hughes was to anyone who came into contact with him.

This book is a fascinating personal account of the strange, at times obsessive behaviour of Howard Hughes and the power he wielded from inside his secret world. However I did not find any of the incidents recalled amusing and certainly not hilarious.

Hilarious, I couldn't put it down

I met Ronnie's wife Virgie Kistler last year when she came to work for our company in Carpinteria California. Being interested in Howard Hughes, I asked her if I could borrow her only copy of the book. I was suprised to find that even though the book centered around Hughes's life, it was really more about Ronnie's own life and how humorous the relationship between an ordinary man and billionaire could be. Definately read the book before the movie comes out! Yes, the movie! And I am sure that even though Ronnie is gone, the movie will accurately portray this great book because his wife Virgie has been contracted to be a consultant to the film and the rerelease of the book.

I thought Ron Kistler's humorous insight of a man that hardly anyone really knew was one of the funniest books I've ever read. The bizarre details that Kistler was assigned to makes Hughes even more of a kook than anyone ever imagined.I had the book years ago and somehow misplaced or lost it and really would like to find another copy, even used would be good.

After reading Apollo 13(Lost Moon) and seeing the movie I decided to read this book. While it is mostly about the early Apollo missions it also has information on the movie. This is a read for any die-hard Apollo fan. If you are looking for a Book on the Apollo Era this is not the book for you.

The NEWMARKET series is the best in published screenplays because they maintain the original format of the pages from the production script. As any screenwriter knows, the layout and presentation of how a page looks can sometimes be as important as the content.

This is a great book and a great movie. The script itself is very readable, plus it represents a primer on how to write both period detail and boxing scenes. The additional historic and filmmaking information only adds to the experience of the film -- and of reading the script.
