This book never ceases to amaze me with its wisdom, insight, and way of effortlessly passing these gifts on to the reader. I would highly recommend this book to anyone. I would like to give it about 50 stars instead of 5, but I do what I can.

This is a collection of paperbacks published by Baen Books in the mid-1990s. Included here are a variety of works by Howard, including stories from the adventure, horror and fantasy genres. The titles speak for themselves. This series provides a nice survey of Howard's non-Conan work. Each book has an introduction written by a horror or fantasy author such as Ramsey Campbell or David Drake. Fans of Howard might like to procure it just to add to their collection. It's a great collection of some of Howard's best work. You can probably find these stories elsewhere, but this is a great way to get them all in one place.

Excellent Primer This Book Is on the Money for New Traders
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-18
The Sixth Market is an excellent primer for new securities traders. It is well written, easy to read, and explains the subject of trading in a simple, but uncomplicated manner. The three authors combined 60 years trading experience provides readers with the basics for understanding what trading is all about and what is required to succeed. The authors are not only traders, but are also educators, and two of them have written numerous books on trading.

The first part of the book provides a short historical perspective on the securities markets from the beginning until the present time (Sixth Market refers to self-directed traders who trade electronically). The book also contains a 14 page glossary and a list of recommended reading, selecting a broker, and getting the right computer and trading setup.

More than half the book is devoted to the Six Steps necessary to prepare for trading. It is a comprehensive approach that includes:

1. Building Self-awareness ( goals, trading style, success factors, and discipline) 2. Learning Market Fundamentals (markets, orders, Level II, short sales, trading rules, selecting broker) 3. Understanding Charts (market psychology, candlesticks, support and resistance, moving averages) 4. Trading From Reliable Chart Setups (High probability patterns, trading plan, gaps, exits) 5. Mastering Your Trading Plan (risk and reward, money management, discipline) 6. I Don't Have the Willpower to be Disciplined (self-directed study)

Theey to trading is a solid education, discipline, and a trading plan. That is what this book covers, and that is why is great for beginners. There is no fluff in this book or war stories just the facts. I highly recommend this book to those just starting out in trading.

I liked this book, although it is really, really, really long and doesn't necessarily tell the story as well as it ought to be able to, given the length. I really liked the story of Dominick and Thomas as adolescents and Thomas's descent into schizophrenia, especially since I have a relative with schizophrenia whose story is similar up to a point. I also liked the love story between Dominick and Dessa, though I could have done without the rape scene, which is NOT satisfactorily resolved. The idea of Dominick's character being stuck in the middle between a mother who loved him less than she loved his brother and a stepfather who hated him less than he hated his brother was an intruguing one. And I didn't mind the neat ending. After that many pages, it was a relief.

Interesting, meaningful, and entertaining ...

This book was everything that the reviews on here say it is. I don't read many contemporary novels because I found them disappointing, however, this was an entertaining and worthwhile read. I found myself taking my kindle everywhere not only because I wanted to learn the end of the story, but also because I found the story touched my mind and heart and many levels. I'll be reading Wally's Lamb's latest novel in the near future.

Wally Lamb is simply amazing!

Do not shy away from this book because of its length (or because of the Oprah sticker!). It's a fantastic story and when you're finished reading, you'll wish it had been even longer. It's true. This book is on my list of all-time favorites as is Lamb's earlier work, She's Come Undone. I'm now eagerly awaiting his new novel which I've just ordered.

Every book lover simply must discover Wally Lamb.

One of my favorites!!

I was intimidated by the length of the book but when my sister told me she read it twice I figured there must be something to it. I love this book and I didn't want it to end. At some point I thought I knew where the story was going....WRONG! The ending completely fooled me.
Read it and enjoy!

But it's worth it.

It took me over 2 years to read this book. I struggled with not just with the length of the book - but also with the narration. I admit I didn't admire Dominick - I even disliked his character, and couldn't even bring myself to read more than a few paragraphs at times. But after midway in the novel, the tone picks up and somehow putting the book down is too hard. It wasn't an obligation to the author or to some higher power literary God - but insatiable curiousity of "the ending" and this gradual development of the main character spurred me to read more, to get to the ending which was all worth everything.

I can't say this is my favorite book - but will it be one of the ones I really like? Yeah. Because Wally Lamb put himself in his novel, put himself in his characters, made life tough for them and then when they persevered they survived and were better for it: they lived after being emotionally dead for a period. A regeneration. And that's what's cool about him. And this book.

I was close to tears when I read the last two pages. It was all so poetically beautiful that I didn't want it to end. And it didn't in a way - it only began.

I recommend this book even if you find you can't finish it immediately. I'm not sure if anyone really could. It's worth a try like everything in life, and when you finish this, you'll be happy you did.

In the US version (St Martin's Paperbacks) , I found some wordings are different from the UK one (Pan Macmillan).

Like the third paragraph of chapter 1 , the US version reads 'The young hunter ...' while the UK one has this as 'The young boy ...'

Is it normal to have an editing from the UK version?

Well written like all of his novels. I was very interested and involved with the characters. The characters are well developed, the story lines grew as we followed their lives. Then they became very un-likeable. These successful and driven men began to act out of character in my opinion.
The ending was very disappointing and as a result I cannot recommend the book. Great story telling, and then a real let down.

This was a book my mother recommended to me. She read it several years ago and remembered how good it was. And oh how good it was. This is a great story that is told over about 60 years from Europe to America. Archer tells 2 parallel stories. One about Abel Rosnovki and one about William Kane. The story is so well told and so interesting that I felt torn between the two main characters and their stories. You feel pulled away from one story line when Archer takes you to the next. I enjoyed Archer's historical weave throughout each chapter. Especially the history of Poland and the part it played in both World Wars. Fascinating! Each character is developed from birth by the author and he does an outstanding job of taking you thru their childhood, teenage-school years and then adulthood. So, as a reader, you really get a feel for what they are made of and why they made the decisions they made throughout their life. The stories cross paths through-out the book and the ending is a masterful surprise. I have already mooched the sequel The Prodigal Daughter which I can't wait to read.

Lucas Davenport experiences small town life through small town crime, and discovers that not all of his big city ways translate well in the snowed-in wilds of Wisconsin. It was nice to see him out of his element and in a setting that threw him for a loop. The descriptions of the winterscapes and the atmosphere of the town were very well written. I'd recommend this volume to anyone.

This book was a good addition to the series. It had me hooked from the start and my interest never waned. The unraveling of a series of what may be constructed as senseless murders is the premise of the story. How this story unravels is believable and logical, and the characters are true to life. I also like the love interest in the plot.

The book was also easy to read with short chapters and easy to interpret dialogue.

Winter, Weather ,and the Iceman Cometh

Lucas finds himself at loose ends after being run out of the Minneapolis PD and is taking solace in the cold north woods of Wisconsin when he is called to assist the sheriff's department of Objibway county when a suspicious fire leads to murder and the discovery of a ring of perverts that had been operating in the county for some time. Facing off against a man who calls himself the Iceman, Lucas has to try to find out who is responsible before any more bodies pile up. And pile up they do in this fast-paced 5th book in the "Prey" series. We also are introduced to Weather Karkinnen, a surgeon who immediately steals Davenport's heart.

The Iceman is a pure sociopath - reading this book is often like a train wreck. You don't want to, but you are compelled to keep going as he continues to kill person after person for the most twisted reasons, where if he had left things alone . . . well, you just need to read the book. I love the "Prey" series - this is my second time reading through them. For any who enjoy a good thriller/police procedural/mystery/suspense novel - you can't miss with these.

Lucas Davenport chases a killer in the frozen wilderness

Review Date: 2007-05-30
Arguably the best entry among the first five books in this series (though I still have a soft spot for the extreme creepiness and dramatic revelations of "Eyes of Prey"), Mr. Sandford's "Winter Prey" is nevertheless a bracing, knock-out read and inarguably at least the second best among the first five books. Though series protagonist Lucas Davenport is here in all his glory, this one is less concerned with what is going on in Lucas' often troubled life and just wants to give us a moody, bang-up thriller plot. And there's also a slight change in this installment's flavor and tone, which makes for some welcome variety: instead of urban tension, here we get snowstorms, icy temperatures, snowmobiles, and coyotes. But don't worry, you still get one of those nicely written Lucas Davenport romantic sublots, this time involving a tough yet fetching surgeon. And yes, you also get a memorable killer. Laced with intelligent details yet extremely fast paced, "Winter Prey" will not disappoint.

The Best Prey So Far...

Review Date: 2008-05-16
I'm a fan of the Prey series and unfortunately I have in the past read them here and there, but not in any order. I recently started at the beginning and wish I had started there from the start. Doing that enables the reader to better follow the character development of Davenport. Having read some of the later books, it is in Winter Prey that we are first introduced to Weather. Their relationship in later books makes more sense now.

Winter Prey gives us the villain of "The Iceman." The crimes, chases and evidence collection is made difficult by the voluminous amounts of snow and harsh temperatures. The temperatures are 30 below zero, thus making it physically dangerous to be exposed to the elements for any length of time. Lucas is free lancing in the small, rural area of Northern Wisconsin. The local sheriff rightfully realizes he is in over his head after a family of three is murdered and their house is burned, and requests Davenport's help.

The identity of the villain kept me guessing. There were clues throughout, for example the killer knew intimate details of the police investigation, yet the possible people it could be were eliminated throughout the book as the story progressed. I found myself suspecting someone, then they were accounted for when the next murder happened. I enjoyed the book, the characters and couldn't put it down.

I thought the premise was crazy. Who would believe this could even happen - who would contract to have themselves killed - and then leave $46 million to the contracted killer? But who was the 'real' killer? I kept changing my guesses all the way through the book and was wrong to the end.

This is a good and blazing quick read.

I won't summarize the book here, but I'll just say that this Grippando book is a really good one and is worthy of you reading. The best part about this book was that the whole way through I was guessing who the villian was, and every one of my guess turned out wrong. While I was trying to imagine who the villian would be, at the same time I was hoping that I would be wrong so the ending would be a surprise, and it turned out that everyone I thought was guilty wasn't; everyone I thought was innocent had some sore of involvement; or some combination of the two. This is a blazing fast read that I finished in a day and half, and I wasn't even intending to read that much. Definitely pick this book up.

Also, it's pretty funny too. There were about a dozen lines in the book that actually had me laughing out loud, and you don't usually find that in a suspense/thriller like this one. I highly recommend this book to you.

Would read it again!

This is my 3rd Grippando book and one of the best whodonits that I have read in a while

Imagine this, Sally Fenning is a beautiful, young woman who has decided to end her life. Her life has been tragic since her young daughter was murdered and she was stabbed by a stalker who the police failed to catch and she feels she has nothing to gain. She asks a contract killer to do the deed. He refuses, she ends up dead anyway and she names him in her will. Along with Tatum, the contract killer, Sally also adds her ex-husband, the divorce lawyer, the DA that covered the investigation, a reporter who was planning on writing a book based on Sally's tragedy and finally a stranger name Alan Sirap to the list of beneficiaries. The amount of the inheritance is $46 million and only the last person living will collect the "jackpot".

This is where the fun starts. Jack Swyteck, best friend of the contract killer's brother is hired to defend Tatum and try to secure the inheritance for his client. Jack is too much of a good guy not to be bothered by the fact that this beautiful mysterious women decides to include the person that she hired to kill her, in her will.

As you coast along the book, you will start to understand the reason why each person was named in the will and you will also have fun trying to figure out who is killing each of the beneficiaries and who is Alan Sirap?

Grippando keeps me entertained and also on the edge of my seat, trying to answer all the questions before the book ended.

He just seems to get better with each book that I read. One of my fav.

This wonderful book used to be one of the few positive lesbian books out there. I know when I found it, years ago, I was comforted by the portrayal of two women making their way in a world that does not want them to be together. They lack even the words to describe their feelings for each other. When one describes her physical reaction to the other's lovemaking as "melting" I thought that was a perfect description for the book. It made all my cynicism melt away for a while.

It's a period piece and a well-written romantic tale that no true romantic will want to miss.

Miller's writing ability is to be highly commended. She manages to combine warmth, love and humor into each page. Having read one too many "small blond" books, it's refreshing to find a lesbian love story in which the writing technique does not become irritating after the first chapter.

Also, this book contains no elderly, non-judgemental housekeepers. The women have to figure things out all by themselves.

Best line in the book: "I'm not playing you, Darling, I'm landing you."

This is a terrific novel that should not be missed. This is a timeless classic so well written you would think the author made a career in writing historic literature.

You actually feel the deep emotion that they have for each other. It's so strong that you sometimes forget the humor that is laced throughout. There are some powerful scenes that reflect the harsh times where women did not have a say in their own affairs.

There is as much depth in one chapter as you will get in entire novels. The writing simply flows and you don't put the book down until you notice the day has gone dark and lunch and dinner time have passed you by. Wonderful characters so rich in details that you wonder about them long after the novel ends.

I couldn't be happier by the authors other books - if you enjoyed Patience and Sarah you will be delighted with Side by Side.

You will not find a better novel to read

George Moran is a man who married into money and divorced out of most of it. Earlier in life, he served in the military and saw some brief action in the Dominican Republic. Now running a small motel, he returns to the Dominican Republic to see the places where he fought without the stress of combat and also to search for a girl who was his enemy at the time but who also intrigued him. While there, he meets up with the wife of a former Dominican general who was also known to him when he was married. The two had always had a connection of sorts and they end up in a passionate affair. I won't give away any more specific plot details but there is a fair amount of intrigue as well as the near-constant threat of violence and murder.

Elmore Leonard is well known as a master of prose and the narrative here is certainly clear and crisp. Most of the characters were interesting, even some of the minor ones that are barely part of the story. While the author is sometimes classified as a mystery writer, this is neither a mystery nor a detective story. It's crime fiction featuring a more or less ordinary guy getting caught up in a mess and trying to work his way through it.

The plot was the weak spot for me. The Dominican angle wasn't that interesting to me to begin with and the whole angle with the girl there never really went anywhere. I also found it difficult to empathize with George's lover who carries on an affair and wants to leave her husband but keeps waiting around because she hasn't had time to write out the perfect goodbye speech yet. She knows that he's had many people killed and that he knows about her affair but won't leave for far too long.

The story takes several turns but most felt muddled, instead of being suspenseful twists. I don't want to overstate the case, this is not a bad book. But it was a disappointment because I had heard a lot of good things about Elmore Leonard and I can't say that I was enthralled with my first experience reading him. Established fans may enjoy it, but if you're looking to try the author for the first time, I'd recommend looking at one of his other works.

Pageturning at it's most compulsive. Elmore Leonard returns to South Florida for another twisted tale of greed, death and love set in a world of ex-marines, ex-Generals, gangsters and a variety of lowlifes.

Yet again, Mr. Leonard's plot and dialogue are scarily believable; I fear he knows more than he lets on!

I think Leonard is still cranking out good stuff, but if you want to catch Leonard before the serious buzz started to attach to him, Cat Chaser is a great place to start. George Moran, ex-Marine, ex-Detroit native, and owner of the Coconut Palms Resort Apartments, is like so many heroes in Leonard's world, a guy looking at middle-age who, nevertheless, holds to a personal code, even as he stands at crossroad that has him looking back and looking forward, while sharks snap all around. With his moral compass intact, he always seems to know what to do in any situation, even if he makes it up as he goes along. Enter another ex-grunt and ex-actor Nolan Tyner (who is a dead ringer for Owen Wilson - 15 years before Wilson even appeared in a movie!), who is now an alcoholic private investigator staked out at pool side, and things start to happen.

Oh, there's a lady that needs saving, Mary de Boya. Like Moran, she's an ex-Detroit native and, complicating things, wife to a former torturer from a south American country and now Florida real estate magnate, Andres de Boya. There's another bad guy named Jiggs Scully, who is lethally memorable - even by Leonard's villain-meter. And, of course, a lot of money under the torturer's bed , and page after page of great dialogue. (As a subplot, it's very interesting to see who is the most dangerous bad guy - de Boya or Scully, their conversations together were for me the high points of the novel. Two killers playing chess.) To tell you more would be to cheat you a bit.

This was the first Elmore Leonard novel I've read, though I SAW Out of Sight and Get Shorty. Obviously, I felt like I knew what to expect before I opened the book: numerous plot twists, character's who've seen better days and tight dialogue. I'm not a fan of "detective" fiction, so I can't really compare it to that. I found the setting to be compelling: motel in South Florida, the Dominican Republic. I thought the main character's experience with the Marines in the Dominican Republic was interesting. Frankly, as a 28 year old, I wasn't even aware that Marines were in the Dominican Republic at that time.

Book is a quick read, no matter how you slice it. Despite the "adult" subject matter, it occurs to me that Leonard novels would make a good read for a certain kind of high school student. Leonards books are always cheap to pick up and widely available.

The rythym of the dialogue in "Cat Chaser" is above average.

I heard this man speak at a retreat i went to, totally put a new perspective on things. He made me realize i was missing something, and i wanted what he had. I had been turned off by other speakers cuz they didn't seem very real, but ken totally was. He had been there, done that, and escaped it. He showed me that God can change anyone and that God really does love even the people who seem like they are hopeless and can never change. This book is pretty much the thing he talked about, his testimony is really powerful. I bought this book, read it over the next few days, and was like, man...good stuff
i recommend it for anyone who thinks they have had a tough life and there is no hope, cuz Ken is living proof that there is hope for anyone.

I had the pleasure to see Ken Freeman at our church during a recent youth revival. It was during this rally that we purchased his book to help support his ministry. Ken does a good job chronicling his life and giving snippets about those to whom he's ministered in his career. I guess I think that when people invoke numbers in their evangelistic endeavors - there is a certain amount of ego that is wanting to be stroked. Ken's writing is a lot like his speaking: once you've seen him speak - you'll be more tolerant of his writing style. Overall, the book is a decent rendition of this evangelist's passion about ministry.

One of his friends took him to church were his life was turned his life around. He is now going around the world tell people about his life and teaching about God. He has leaded a plethora of people to Christ.
The main character's name is Ken Freeman. He cares about all the people everywhere. He loves to lead people to Christ. He has wounds and cuts. He came to be school. He loves his friends and what they did for him when he was a in the care of his mom and many boyfriends. He loves his family and has a little girl. He is caring and I am caring to. I try to lead people to Christ and so does he.
I liked this book because he taught me the real meaning to being a Christian. Also it taught me the real meaning of life. It was a fast reading. When he became a Christian was my favorite part. I would recommend this book to everyone. I would love to be like him.

Rescued by the Cross was a phenomenal book. It tells the story of Ken Freemen's life. Ken Freemen and his sister were brutally abused by their alcoholic mother. They had over eight different stepfathers, and lived in over 5 different locations a year. They were often starved with no or very little food to eat. Ken was also harassed and beat up at school. He hated his life and everything and every one in it. They're father was never around and then his parents divorced and moved out. Ken never spoke to his father and hated him for leaving then with only his mother and her many boyfriends, husbands, and their "babysitters". They often abused the kids as well. Then Ken was invited to church with a classmate with the offer of free food Ken said that he would come. He had no idea that the night would change his life forever. Ken Freeman accepted Jesus Christ and his personal lord and savior. Ken began ever since that night lived his life as a Christian and now has a wonderful loving Christian family.
Ken Freeman I would imagine had a great personality when he wasn't frustrated with the hatred towards the world. He always cared for his younger sister Donna and tried to stand up for her when their mother abused them. Ken would have to be strong to live through all the years of touchier that he had received. Now a days Ken is a very sweet, caring and understanding man. He helps people of all ages with their life he tires to help them straighten out there life and be rescued by the cross just as he was.
Rescued by the Cross was a wonderful book that I truly enjoyed. I have never wanted to keep reading a book. This was the very first book that I read that I just couldn't put down. Rescued by the Cross was a very inspirational book. This book has made me appreciate the life that I have. I have a loving family and I am truly thankful for that. I would defiantly recommend this book to my friend. A lot of my friends that haven't already read the book after they read a few pages in mind went to the school library and checked it out. Rescued by the Cross was a phenomenal book. If you haven't already read it you should you will have a new look perspective on life.
