What a fun read! I was delightfully surprised with this novel - it went far above and beyond what I expected when I picked it up! The cover is adorable, but it gets so much better!! =)

This is a new chick lit with a completely unique voice - one you don't want to miss! I thoroughly enjoyed the story and was very disappointed when I turned the last page. Must...read...more!!!!!!

I believe women of all ages, shapes, and sizes will be able to relate to the realistic, heartfelt characters in this novel. For example, I'm 23 - a good 30 years younger than the heroine, yet I emphasized and cheered her on with my whole heart!

If you're looking for a chick lit with a deeper storyline and realistic problems for today's woman, look no further. This is one story that entertains without the extra layer of fluff.

BUY IT NOW!! =)

A Stitch in Time was a great romance and a great read. Dee is an engaging character and the "inside story" on fund-raising fascinating. As much as I liked this book, Allison Bottke's next book, One Little Secret, is even better! Keep it up, Allison!

Dee is now living the fabulous life. Once overweight and unhappy, thanks to gastric bypass surgery, plastic surgery and a great job she's starting to enjoy life a little more. She still won't forgive her ex-husband who cheated on her even though he keeps bugging her about it. She's enjoying her new image and wants to enjoy her life to her fullest. Unfortunately her two 30+ year children don't seem to share this idea with her and constantly bicker with Dee blaming her for their parents' breakup. Plus Dee's new clients are not the easiest bunch to work with. Then just as there is a new guy in the horizon, Dee is forced to work with her ex on the project! This definitely puts her new faith in Christianity to the test.

This was a really fun book to read. I enjoyed reading about Dee's business with all the movie stars. Loved the costume ball sequence with Patrick Swayze. I also enjoyed that the person who had kept doing wrong to Dee finally got found out and punished, without Dee extracting her own revenge. I also liked since Dee is new Christian, she is eager to share about her faith but she knows not to blast it out to people when they feel uncomfortable. She's still mostly the same person though, feeling insecure about herself and hoping that plastic surgery will ease all her troubles away. I enjoyed the fashion, shoes, clothes talk in the book. It made it more fun for me to hear about designer names even though I will never be able to afford them! Dee's a very likable character and the reader constantly wants to cheer her on. I felt that it was also very realistic to show that society was treating Dee better just because she was skinnier. Yes Christians are suppose to love everyone, but it's also truth that looks ARE being judged in society. The only thing I didn't like was that I felt the ending was a little too tidied up. I honestly didn't see why she had to go back to Lyle. Yes she should forgive him, but that doesn't mean she can't be angry with him. He lost her trust, she didn't have to take him back. I know he became a Christian but I would have liked to see him at least become more spiritually mature before Dee took him back. Other than this, this book is highly recommended. It's targeted for the baby-boomer set but I believe anyone who likes a fun chick lit book will enjoy this one at any age.

A Stitch in Time is a must-read! Dee Decker is a heroine, not only for those who are or have been overweight, but also for any woman who struggles to survive in a dog-eat-dog world of luncheons, business dinners, and posh banquets. She is the poster child for every woman whose husband has been unfaithful, whose children have been ungrateful, and who looks for herself outside of herself rather than what is at the core of a woman, her heart.

Kelly writes in a compelling way creating parallells and connections between him winning the various tasks on The Apprentice and his military experience. I like his style and his sense of taking responsibility even when things go wrong. Humility is deifinetely a trait a leader must develop!

I found the book a pleasant read and I liked the fact Kelly was talking a lot about the lessons he learnt in life and how these experiences enabled him to move on.

I grew up with some idea of what military life was like due to my Dad being in the Navy - but I must admit it's never held a lot of interest for me. Reading Kelly's book did actually shed a whole new light on what advantages military service can bring to other aspects of someone's life. The principles that are discussed in the book (Duty, Impeccability, Passion, Perseverance, Planning, Teamwork, Loyalty, Flexibility, Selfless Service and Integrity) are all really worthy reading for anyone in business and the military slant I found surprisingly gave it more bite and interest.

Great Read from a Super Person

I recently purchased "Take Command" for a college course. I chose this book because I am a fan of the television show "The Apprentice." I could not have picked a better book to read before I graduate and re-enter the business world.

The ten principles that Kelly Perdew learned while attending West Point can be used by anyone who wants to get the most out of life. Duty, Impeccability, Passion, Perserverance, Planning, Teamwork, Loyalty, Flexibility, Selfless Service and Integrity. I plan to use these principle's to be a strong leader in everything I do.

I always wondered how I would have handled military training. Kelly details how physical strength is only a small part of it.
I was very impressed with how Kelly got into West Point, as well as what it took to graduate. His business experience explains how to handle a loss and come back and do things better. The experience this guy has at such a young age is unbelievable!

If you are just looking for a college, read this book! If you are graduating and looking for a job, read this book! If you have been working for ten or twenty years, read this book! "Take Command" includes great stories about Donald Trump, Ross Perot and Marsha Evans to name a few. This book will teach you to be prepared for anything and to perform well under pressure or during a crisis.

Kelly Perdew details how the ten principles became second nature during his military training. Anyone can learn and use the ten principles. If you want to challenge yourself to be a strong leader in business and life, "Take Command" will put you in a position to succeed.

A very good book for the military or business leader

This book by Apprentice winner Kelly Perdew is a worthwhile read. Written in the style of many military-business leadership books, it swtiches back and forth between Perdew's Apprentice exploits and anecdotes from great military veterans turned business leaders. The stories about Perdew's career, Apprentice tasks, and about others are both inspirational and entertaining. I am giving 4 stars because he talks about principles, but does not go deep into the reader's application of them.

Nevertheless, this is a worthwhile read for both the Army or corporate officer.

I listen to Hayhouse radio all the time and I kept hearing Trust your Vibes over and over. Finally, I bought it to see what it is all about. I have been working on self-help happiness, peace, & joy for years. I love Wayne Dyer, but this book truly took me where I needed to go. I drowned out my instincts for years, I would sleep with my TV on (to spongebob, can you believe it) so I didn't have to worry, hear my thoughts, and deal with my anxiety. The more I ignored my thoughts and my instincts the more miserable I became. I started to get really jealous over nothing. So I was desperate. So I bought this book and I also bought the Trust Your Vibes Oracle Cards. Well needless to say - this book saved my happiness and my husband loves my new attitude, I stopped drowning out that voice in the back of my head that was telling me the right path to take. I stopped listening to my lying EGO who was always afraid to make a decision, I think this is what I have been searching for --the last piece of the puzzle to move on and enjoy life. I wasted so much time. Also, everyone I work with wants me to pull them a card everyday. I don't even care what people think of me anymore, I even talk about my intuition and intent all the time. The craziest things have been happening and people are flowing into my life. Check out the Green Fire in the book - it will help you start a new begining.

This book and oracle cards have been a blessing for me. I can't get enough of it.

Sonia does a wonderful job of guiding us back to trusting our instincts and living a fuller life as a result. She helps us weed out the static of everyday living. I first read this book four years ago and have since gone back and re-read it at times when I felt I needed to get quiet and "re-center". Reading a day at a time makes it very manageable and gives me time to think about the message. I think this book could be very beneficial to people in any walk of life. Even in the business setting. It's an easy, interesting read and I highly recommend it!

Trusting Your Vibes Frees Your Spirit

Review Date: 2008-04-03
Sonia Choquette holds out the promise of a place where you are free. Where the spirit within you can emerge and you can actually be happy in this troubled world. But you have to follow your 6th sense, live by your intuition and your spirit, not by your ego and your 5 senses, as the ego causes pain--anger, jealousy, resentment, but the spirit is loving, forgiving and healing. Using examples from her clients, Sonia illustrates how people who trusted their vibes were able to free themselves from unhappy and confining situations, enjoy life and experience peace.
Writing with clarity and honesty, this down to earth pychic also has a great sense of humor, and never allows you to take yourself too seriously.
Instead of worrying and fretting over every little thing, which your ego and your reason urge you to do, she advises you to be lighthearted, spontaneous, and to go with the flow. By living in the spirit, doing what you want to do, and not what others would have you do, your life can turn around and you can become the person you were meant to be.

I fell upon Sonia's works and ordered this and another of her books together. I loved them both and will now read whatever else she has written. She is very down to earth, easy to read and gives practical, do-able tasks for anyone wanting to fine tune their six sense. For those of us who have lived with "premonitions" or good "instincts" it was nice to have someone help us feel more comfortable with our inner voice.

In an effort to work my way through Newbury winner/honor books, I picked up the Wednesday Wars - and what a treat this turned out to be!

Holling Hoodhood reminded me of a combination of Holden Caulfield, Scout Finch, and Anne Shirley. There were times when I laughed out loud, and other times when I felt tears running down my face. What a wonderful, unique, yet totally believable character. Never again will I take for granted a cream puff.

Supporting characters, particularly Mrs. Baker, are deep and rich, and the backdrop of the turbulent late 60's American is realistically portrayed. How sad I was to see this one end...

Do yourself a favor; I know that this is listed under young adult, but this one is a keeper for any age, so pick up a copy and enjoy the ride!

I'm a 12 year old kid and this is my favorite books EVER! I love it because it is action packed, also you never know what is going to happen next. I totally recommend The Mysterious Benedict Society. The second book
(The Mysterious Benedict Society And The Perilous Jouney) is just as good as the first! Make sure you read the first before you read the second, other wise you will not understand anything. These books are the kind of books you'll NEVER want to put down! I really hope Trenton Lee Stewart writes a third, fourth, fifth and sixth. These books are so good I started rereading the first, right after I finished the second.
I would read his books a thousand times and I totally 100% recommend these books to everyone and hope you love these books as much as I did. Absolutely 100% worth the money!!! HAPPY READING!!

a favorite of three generations

We listened to the audiobook on a three generations family road trip and everyone loved the book. Granted, some of us were raised on Long Island in the early sixties (duck and cover drill, LILCO power outages, etc. rang true). However, even the twelve year old reluctant reader in the group raised in Mass. couldn't wait until we got back in the car to listen to more. It is a book with something for everyone. There is plenty of humor and serious concerns along with an examination of family dynamics. The setting is the Vietnam war and there are plenty of parallels for today as well. In summary, give this book a try and consider reading or listening as a family. "You sir, are a pied ninny", is now a favorite family quote.

On the suggestion of a friend who has excellent taste in books, I bought this book for my eleven year old son, who's appetite for books exceeds what I can keep up with! It was so gripping that he sat up until two in the morning to finish the book. (I can sympathize; I've done that!) His review (five stars) for the library book club was so enthusiastic that the next night I sat up until two in the morning to read it! This is probably the best recent children's book I've found! I loved it! And it gently introduces topics such as racism, the Vietnam war, bullying, determination and self-sacrifice that parents can discuss with their children. Kids love the book because it's witty and has a great story. Then again, I loved it for that too! So four thumbs up, two from me and two from my son!

Dr Erik Plasker's Book is a great read for anyone looking to take stock of their life. The main message revolves around the fact that many of us will live to be 100 and beyond, so we may as well start preparing for this increased longevity that not many of us have planned for.
"What changes would you make today, if you knew you would live to be 100?"
Health, finances, relationships, career, social, and more are looked at in this book.
What will we do with this advanced warning our ancestors didn't get?

Excellent book. So sorry the publisher chose Amazon. com to market it. They are thieves. I ordered 5 books. One came and four never arrived. They won't even credit my account for the missing books because they were being shipped from Orchard Books. I don't have any way of contacting Orchard Books and it isn't my responsibility to do so. Amazon took the money. They should return it if they can't supply the books. A case for the FCC.

This is a lively engaging story which captured my interest from the first paragraph. The author has the ability to transition deftly from descriptive passages of place and character to writing extremely natural dialogue. Because of this, the story line moves along swiftly as an entertaining read and peaks my interest to wanting to carry on and learn more. I'm very interested in how he will develop future characters.Creating the world of the Cafe in which they will operate is a rich landscape within which to explore them against an interesting background.
Besides a talent for bringing a place to life, the author has a special talent for dialogue. It flows smoothly and naturally between the two characters as well as the specific descriptions of the various wines and how they are made. I believe these descriptions enhance the story. The author definitely knows his stuff but has the ability to present it in a very knowledgeable yet easily understandable way.In a very limited excerpt, I feel I know who these characters are and the world which they inhabit, both the restaurant and NYC.
I would look forward to see how this story enfolds.

Works for me, DeRochi's book (the 5000 or so words available for free viewing) leaves me longing for more...more of the rich coffee, NY cheesecake, eating pasta dishes street-side, New Yorkers and tourists abound and the wonderful collective smell of New York City. The trash, sirens, rattling taxis and creepy characters I can easily forget, but not the unique cafe or bistro on a New York City side street; tables set, inviting, open. I'd like to read the rest of the book, perhaps it will help me understand the restaurant business better, educate me in the fine art of wine selection but most certainly would love to read the rest of Lionel's adventure in the Big City! Let Cafe Bentley be a winner, it already is for me. Cafe Bentley - Official ABNA Entrant

Very interesting! I am looking forward to reading the entire work.
The short ammount of reading available brought out a real feel of New York City and the many problems facing people and small restaurants.
The characters were very well developed. The reader has the feeling he knows them.
I am not knowledgable regarding the fine points or background of wine, however it appears the author is, and he makes you desire to learn more.
Again, I am anxious to read more from Mr. DeRochi.

I like the way the author, through his character,Lionel, tries to simplify wine for Walter, the owner of Cafe Bentley.I agree with the others who have said that the excerpt reminds them of the movie Sideways. Personally, I learned a lot more about wine in these few pages than I have in the few books I have tried to read.

I sense that Lionel will have his hands full when he meets Scott, the manager. Walter tells us that Scott has been with him since the beginning, and I would imagine that a young Frenchman telling him what a mess he has made of the wine will create an immediate "oil and water" mixture.

I've only met three of the characters but I already have a clear idea of who they are and I look forward to see what happens next. Of the excerpts I've read, this one is my favorite.I would love a quiet corner table at Cafe Bentley where I could enjoy a glass of Pinot Noir and watch this story unfold, but since thats not possible, publish this as I would love to read it, I'll supply the wine!

I need to get this novel!!!

You'll probably will only read this book if you're a tennis afficionado.
If so, you will read it in the blink of an eye, because this is such an entertaining biography about one of the greatest players of all time. Don't get high expectations: it's all about Pete's tennis life. You'll get only glimpses of his feelings outside a tennis court. And tha't's right for me, I don't care about gossip and Pete makes it clear in the introduction that this is not a "score-settling" book.

Very good, almost obligatory reading if you enjoy tennis.

Pete Sampras was not only a great and exceptional tennis player, but also a great athlete and competitor in Sports History.
In this book he gives a very great insight of his life in the top, the struggle that every champion has to carry on. It is great how he handled the losses. A big Champion like him can teach that even for him life was not always ALL about winning, but also dealing with losses.
Another very important concept that Pete Sampras remarks, are his core values, learned from his family. This is a key concept that many people omit and just focus on the results, not the things that took Pete Sampras to be the best Tennis player ever.

An interesting read

I am Pete Sampras` fan and of course I enjoyed this book a lot!
I knew about most of the matches and important events, so it was really interesting to read Pete`s view of things.
And at the end I had a feeling, that the book was too thin:)

A true champion

Pete Sampras is my all time favorite tennis player and this book was a unique opportunity to gain insight into the personality and make up of one of the greatest champions of all time. It is hard to put the book down, once you start reading it. I would definitely recommend it to tennis players and non-tennis players alike.

A Child's Christmas In Wales CD: And Five Poems
Hurrah! Now I won't have to wait for the radio to play Dylan Thomas reading his wonderful Child's Christmas every Christmas. Truly a beautiful recording of the other poems as well.

Definitely not the best print version!

My goodness, these illustrations are ugly. They completely detract from the beauty of the language. Either read it out loud to a blind person or stick with the version illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman.

This reading of A Child's Christmas in Wales is tops! It wouldn't be Christmas for us without hearing Dylan Thomas tell his story. He recounts a holiday of simple, family and neighborhood doings, and paints a picture of snowy, seaside Wales of the 1920's.

from a little bit of Wales comes universally human warmth...

I love this story, as do all my children, who, from their earliest years, have not much struggled with the density of the language nor the scatteredness of the story. 5 of my 8 great-grandparents are from Wales, and the remaining 3 have the blood in them as well, so maybe it is like drinking water for us.:-D Our minds are all scattered, and words, even English words ;-D, fall on us in clumps....which makes it doubly hard to keep a clean house. LOL

The sort of prose-poetry imaginative way of seeing and describing the world unique to Welshwomen and Welshmen and Welshchildren, which does not seek to keep up the pretense that history can be separated from myth, story and desire, and which requires loving with eyes wide open to [and eventually embracing] one's own and others' bumps, bruises and idiosyncracies included, is extraordinarily well represented here. So, by the way, is speaking and listening to the close and Holy darkness!

My favorite version isthe one illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman. To me she has captured the complexity of the Welsh personality best, though i have nothing to say against the other illustrators praised in these reviews. I DO have a warning for you: there are some skinny versions flying about which do not have the poem-story complete and correct. This sort of work cannot suffer removal or modification, IMHO.

If you have read A Child's Christmas in Wales, you know that it has to be a classic. But you can't fully appreciate it until you have heard Dylan Thomas read it. What a deep, expressive, poetic voice. For years, I have listened to the recording on a Caedman record. It is wonderful to have it on a CD.

Amazing book! Proves that not all Germans were rabid Nazis. A personal journey through a unique perspective on how and why the Nazis were able to assume power, as well as why the Germans were unable to stop them. Highly recommended!

Excellent book on the rise of the Nazis by an author with a very humane and sensible view of life who lived through the events. Haffner gives voice to the average Germans who witnessed the rise of Hitler and did not approve - the majority, as it turns out - but who could simply not make sense of the madness around them nor could they find a way to realistically oppose the Nazis.

Haffner's narrative is often touching as he discusses personal events of his own, friends' and family's, illustrating how the sphere of their private lives was affected by politics. The result is that it reads like a 'non-fiction novel', and one extremely relevant for contemporary world events.

It is a pity that Haffner never actually concluded the book. In the last section, his son briefly explains what happened after the abrupt ending of the narrative, thus we miss the detail and richness that Hafner's own perspective would have undoubtedly provided. Still, it is an unmissable book, packed with lessons for present and future generations.

Sebastian Haffner's "Defying Hitler" has an ambitious initial scope - to chronicle the rise of Hitler from 1918-1939. The memoir is "unfinished" in that the narrative leaves off in 1933 as Haffner put down writing the manuscript with the advent of World War II and never came back to it. Haffner's son, Oliver Pretzel ultimately had the work published after Haffner's death.

Even in its "unfinished" condition, the work is a masterpiece. Haffner's purpose is not to excuse the average German in germany to succumbing to Nazism and to Hitler but rather to EXPLAIN the phenomenon. Excusing it would simply be post hoc. Explaining it serves the additional function of future application.

Defying Hitler was a difficult thing to do in practice. One could certainly not do so in public. The repression of Nazism in Germany was all the more pervasive by its reach into the private sphere and by doing so, obliterating the prior German distinction between public and private. The only safe way to defy Hitler was, ultimately emigration.

Haffner's narrative is frank, honest and ironic. It was a joy to read.

Finally, a word about Robert Whitfield, the reader of the Audio edition of "Defying Hitler." I believe there are instances in which the audio edition of a work is equal to or superior to the printed version. These instances of "audio excellence" are directly related to the quality of the reader. Robert Whitfield repeatedly accomplishes "aduio excellence." Whitfield's diction is spot on, his tone fluctuates to match the text. If the text is ironic, so then is Whitfield's tone. If the text is frank, so then is Whitfield's tone. If the text contains italics for emphasis, that emphasis is contained within Whitfield's voice. In short, his contributions always enhance a book and never detract from it. For other texts read by Robert Whitfield, I would recommend Bleak House by Charles Dickens, and The Abolition of Man & the Great Divorce: Library Edition by C.S. Lewis.

What would it have been like to live in Germany during Hitler's rise to power?

This is the story of Sebastian Haffner, a man who lived in Germany during Hitler's rise to power. I loved hearing the story from the perspective of the average German. I can't imagine living in such tumultuous times, but reading this book gives me a glimpse. The best part about it is the fact that it tries to answer two very important questions: how on earth a regime like the Nazis could rise to power, and how almost the entire nation where corrupted by them. It's a wonderful story that I would recommend to anyone that is the bit interested in that period. Remember, it's by understanding the past that we can best keep from repeating it.

This is a powerful story of the rise of the Nazi movement with scary parallels to modern day events. The question has often been asked how the Germans could allow this to happen and Haffner does an amazing job at describing how. Along with a controlled media, one method was to turn the volume of fear and intimidation one little almost imperceptible increment at the time. Most people just laughed at the antics of Hitler and his crowd in the beginning, but by the time that people caught on to the seriousness of the issue it was too late. By this time many secretly just hoped that it would go away like a bad dream, but history tells a different story.

The difference with this book is that it is told from a very human perspective from an ordinary German who was living through those times and who saw the transformation of German society and social interaction.

Along with this book I would recommend the movie V for Vendetta (Two-Disc Special Edition), and the book Political Ponerology (A Science on the Nature of Evil Adjusted for Political Purposes), which describes the process by which a society is taken over, and by what kind of people.

Those who do not learn from history are bound to repeat it. This book is an important book to read so as to be better able to read the warning signs before it is too late.
