Hard to believe this book would ever go out of print, or that the author apparently wrote nothing else. I got this book when it first came out, and periodically reread it -- and I'm not even a cat person. A wonderful book, beautifully written, about life, love, loss and renewal. Get a copy, this one is a jewel that shouldn't be missed.

A beautiful book celebrating the lives of cats

Lyrical, poignant, tender, this is a book clearly written by a cat lover. A slim memoir of her time as an veterinary research assistant in the oncology department of NYC's Animal Medical Center, the author is above all hopeful, despite the inevitable early demise that awaits most of her patients. She knows that while the doctors may not be able to cure the cancers of their feline patients, they can certainly improve the quality of life, allowing the cats to live out their lives as happily as medically possible. Highly recommended.

Quite Possibly the Best Book I've Ever Read

No exaggeration here, this book is quite possibly the best book I've ever read - and I've read a LOT of books. I probably average 100-150 books per year and this book stands out like a shining beacon of what a book should be.

Without melodrama or saccharine-laced manipulations, the author manages to successfully illustrate the pain, no, the agony, of watching a beloved animal slip away. She shows the behind the scenes anguish and dedication of those who care for and strive to better the lives of our furry children. Nowhere have I seen animal-human relationships portrayed with such tenderness, sincerety and respect without a trace of the maudlin.

Ms. Mooney does not proselytize nor does she moralize, yet somehow she manages to bring forth a sense of the divine and everlasting bond possible with a special animal. She gives the sense also that however difficult, life does go on and that somehow, it must.

One other important note about this book - With her words, her attitude, and her wisdom, Ms. Mooney does a better job than could 12 trained counselors at helping to appease any guilt a companion person may have at any decisions made out of love for an animal.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who has ever loved an animal or even anyone who has simply had a friendship with one. This book speaks to a level rarely seen or addressed in a simple paperback book.

Be forewarned -- you will never forget these cats!

In law school, in a cinder block dormitory, Samantha Mooney's cats were a surrogate animal family for me, but such a tragic family, since death came sooner for them than for most of our pets. This was one of the very few books I carried home with me and I have never let it go in all the intervening years. If we must acknowledge that we are destined to outlive most of our pets, again and again we need a book to remind us to cherish their lives but not tether them to hopeless life when they are ready to let go. Many animals have shared their lives with me in the years since I graduated. This is the book I turn to when that sad day comes around for each of my animals in turn.

A must for animal lovers

It is a simple book, written for the average person. Nothing fancy, just a book written from the heart. If you've ever had the love of a cat, dog, or any other creature in your life then please get this book. It will warm your heart and make you feel what it's like to know true, sincere love. For those who think that humans are the only creatures with souls and feelings, you should read this book and maybe realize that we are truly not alone, there are intelligent and caring lifeforms all around us.

This book was more about Jane's views on food than on food itself. Good book if you are a fan of her work. Bad choice if you are buying it for any insight regarding the culinary industry.

This is a good book, but my copy arrived kind of beat up looking. Since it was going to be a gift for my niece, I had to send it back. Beware of the books labeled BARGAIN. They are not first quality copies like the description states.

Great Information and Overview

Jane Goodall, the chimpanzee lady, gives an overview of the issues with food, water, transportation of the food, etc. in this book. She does a good general job of explaining the issues. She discusses how crops are raised and used, how animals are raised and treated, genetic engineering, organic growing practices, how food is distributed, fast food and water! She uses an anecdotal style with facts and studies to back the stories up. However, the facts are not always referenced in a way the one could easily follow up. Overall, I liked the amount of information she conveyed in a very readable way.

As a huge fan of Ms. Goodall, I was delighted to discover this book just recently. I purchased it right away and read it over a weekend. I have always respected her opinions and was prepared to learn. This book changed my life!

As an environmentalist, I have always wanted to reduce my impact on the planet but thought buying organic was too expensive. Ms. Goodall's expose' showed me that it was not expensive in the long run. After reading about factory farming and its use in the fast food industry, I cut out fast food and was able to purchase organic. Not only does one get the satisfaction of doing something good for themselves and the Earth, but the food taste SO MUCH BETTER! This is how we were meant to nourish our bodies - without chemicals, fertilizers, or frank o foods!

Her coverage of genetically modified foods that bombard the grocery aisles was extremely eye opening. I now find myself shopping only at EarthFare (our regional version of the Whole Foods grocery chain), farmer's markets, and local co-ops for certified organic products.

I loved the reference section which gives the reader website links to learn more about the topics Ms. Goodall covers in the book. I spent two whole days reading more in depth about a variety of topics.

I highly recommend this book to everyone! The reader will walk away realizing that we are but a thread in the web of life and that in our quest to receive nourishment, we shouldn't destroy our natural world.

Gaah! Disgusting!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-25
The content of this book is appalling. Hedren and her husband are apparently vapid, self-indulgent, stupid, and spoiled Hollywood ninnys with more money than common sense.

Hedren encountered big cats on a film set. Bedazzled by their exoticness, she and her husband accumulated and warehoused nearly 100 animals. Hedren is totally ignorant and oblivious of the animal cruelty involved in this.

It is just plain wrong to keep a wild animal for a pet, even if it is beautiful. The big cats are not domestic, not loving, and Hedren has scars to prove it. It can only be ego gratification. "The big cat community" discussed supports poaching and extinction in the wild by maintaining demand for these "pets".

Avoid this book at all costs.

Moving, wonderful story

In The Cats Of Shambala, actress Tippi Hedren details the often harrowing history of her association with big (and I mean lion and tiger big) cats. From her first meeting with one, to the collection and saving of cats from various untimely fates, to the many trials and disasters endured during the filming of the ill-received movie, ROAR, through her establishment of The Roar Foundation (a permanent preserve out in Acton, California), she weaves an entralling tale of love for these animals. Many of the big cat subjects we meet here take on interesting and colorful personalities. There's more depth to these big cats than in many characters in today's popular novels!

Moving, absorbing, inspiring, riveting, and never, never boring. You come away with a new appreciation and respect for big cats after reading this book.

Big Cat Chaos!

Review Date: 1997-11-26
Have you ever dreamt of raising a lion or tiger in your house as a pet? As a throw back to the Joy Adamson and "Born Free" era I dared to dream that dream, and came to the unfortunate realization that there are no books on the subject, until, that is, I found "Cats of Shambala". It is an insightful, funny, and sometimes heart wrenching look at life among the big cats, and what its like to share your home with them. It certainly brings home the reality of the chaos that is caused by these majestic creatures, and anyone reading it would certainly do well to live vicariously through Tippi and bring the book home rather than the cat! For those of you, who like me, have found yourself living with any of the exotic cats as pets, I'm sure you'll find this book answers many of the questions you've been asking.

Thanks Geoffrey for such a wonderful recording.
