Ed Harris Books

I have many excellent cookbooks, and yet when I want to make a new dish and there's no room for a disappointment, this is the one I always pull down. I've made many of the dishes in the book and each one has always been flavorful, broadened my palate and yet never been too difficult or complex for me to master.

As others have said, the wit and stories behind the recipes makes me read through it even when I'm not looking to cook. It also inspired me to start my own cooking club with a groupd of my friends. We've had some wonderful times together, though I must admit, out own cooking prowess has never reached the heights of these ladies. Very highly recommended!

I don't have a cooking club and I've never made all of the recipes in a chapter for a dinner party, but I've picked-and-chosen recipes and haven't come up with a bad dish yet. Their mac & cheese is the one I return to again and again. The recipes are easy to follow, off the beaten path, and sooo yummy.

As an amateur chef with roots in the midwest, I've long relied on little more than good ol' salt and pepper when it comes time to cook for the crew (except for a shake of Italian seasoning on spaghetti night!). But this fantastic book turned me on to a virtual phantasmagoria of new culinary delights! Even my husband, who usually balks at long john silver, is a fan of the italian fish in crazy water. One added bonus for us gals: we get to see what kind of footwear these sophisticated manhattanites are trotting around in these days. Ouch! I think I'll keep my Stride Rites! But I'm a sucker for the Cellophane Noodle Salad.

Witty, charming, well designed, user friendly, and most of all- the recipes are wonderful!

As a seasoned NYC home chef, the hardest thing to do is to come up with a recipe that involves little space, little equipment and little time. These six girls not only engage you with their wonderfully witty writing, but have simplified the difficult task of apartment-sized cooking so that anyone can do it and have excellent results.

Plus the wonderful photos of the food and of the girls cooking, shopping and dining really does make you feel invited. And the graphic design gets great marks for being as chic as they are!

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of little cooking clubs don't start up because of it! [Word has it that they might be doing another book? Cross your fingers on that bit of gossip!]

PS: this would make a great housewarming or hostess gift!

The idea of a cooking club with a group of friends is terrific. Too many times we grow apart from those close to us as marriage, kids, and careers occur. I first saw this book about six months ago. I have a collection of cookbooks but am particular of what I add to it. Before I bought it for myself, I decided to give it as a gift. One of my closest friends from high school recently became a stay at home mom. She was trying to broaden her culinary skills in the kitchen and she doesn't consider herself much of a cook. She loves the cookbook and can't thank me enough. I went out and purchased it so we could share the club even though the miles separate us.

The layout of the book starts with a recap of how the club came into existence. The troubles they face living in NY, tiny kitchens and lugging groceries, was interesting to someone like myself who never is without her car. I particularly enjoyed the emails between the women showing how they came up with the monthly theme. It really shows the personalities of the members. The pictures show off the food deliciously.

We can only hope that they will continue to include the rest of us in their club! I highly recommend you try to gather a group of 6-8 and try this yourself. My favorite recipe is the bread salad. I get lots of compliments every time I make it.

I haven't seen this in over 20 years and was thrilled to stumble across a VHS copy of it. Candy and Levy really shine with Flaherty playing a solid Second City back-up. Really funny stuff, despite being dated. Just good old fashioned silly and fun. Sad to have lost Candy so young. He was an all time great. Any John Candy fan should own this film!!!

I dare anyone to keep a straight face throughout this movie!

As one who has seen all of John's work, I was flabbergasted to find this film at, or near the bottom of his film's popularity list. I can only attribute this awsome oversight to the fact that it hasn't been released on DVD. Why? Perhaps the 1984 release date? Or could it be a conspiracy by some "Anti-Candy-ite"? Who knows.

I am one who seldom, if ever, cares to see a film more than once, regardless of how great it might be, but "Going Berserk" changed all that. This non-stop roller coaster ride thru the most bizzare mis-adventure ever to befall human kind, is one I can't get enough of!

I daresay that if ya can't get it on DVD, Buy the VHS, and use that as an excuse to buy a DVD recorder as well!

Although somewhat dated, this is a hilarious film and one of John Candy's best. It is nonstop, madcap humor and slapstick with some funny sexual situations thrown in for good measure. Who can forget the twisted "Father Knows Best" sequences shown to brainwash John Candy's character against his father-in-law Ed Reese? Another memorable and hilarious character is Mohammed Jerome Willy, outlaw, who meets a rather unusual but stimulating demise.

Featuring a stellar cast, this is one movie you'll enjoy watching over and over again.

If you are lucky enough, also record it on TV--there was a different version made for television (cleaned up, of course), but the TV version features different scenes from the theatrical release.

One of my favorite comedies ever! The SCTV guys are great!!!

This early John Candy masterpiece is two hours of solid laughter. Ignore the silly plot. The main character (Candy) just goes from one improbable situation to a more improbable one. And they're well-written: You can't really predict what will happen (at least, not the first viewing...). If you like SNL, then this is the equivalent of two hours of SNL-like skits. You just keep laughing. John Candy is magnificent.

My absolute favorite clowning book! If you can only get one clowning book get this one! Covers everything!!! Whenever I am writing clown shows I always go to this book. There are so many skit, gag and prop ideas in this book to build off of. It is truly GOLD!!! In addition to all the skit, gag and prop ideas it also covers make up techiniques as well as costuming. This book stays not on my book shelf or even out on a table but in my truck, so I always have access to it even when I am at work. I think one of the things that really makes this book so special to clowning is the fact that it is not just one author, there are around 10!! Each one writing on their speciality or passion.

I really wish they would come out with a second eddition of this book that would include websites and email address of clown scripts, ideas, gags, etc.

Every hobby has one or two definative books. This is it for clowning. Everything I wanted to find out and more. Like any good reference book it started me down the path and I have read several books recommended.

If you are going to get into clowning you need this book.

Having read four customer reviews of this book, I might have had high expectations. Maybe I didn't realize it's true value at first, but after learning various skills, you may want to try others, which didn't catch your interest at first. Then you realize how powerful a tool this book is.

Until now I've focused on juggling and unicycling. The book not only teaches you how to ride a unicycle, -it also provides a lot of amusing variations. Though I knew how to ride before buying this book, it taught me how to ride in a very ridiculous way, seemingly out of control. I've experienced a tremendous effect when acting upon these hints in front of an audience. ...

Just recently I grew interested in the stiltwalking sections and made a pair of wooden tie-on stilts. I'm not exactly an engineer, but following the instructions, all I needed was a saw, some wood, a drill, some glue, some bolts and screws.

Reading the ingenious instructions given sometimes make me laugh out loud, thinking of how it would work in real life. The illustrations are really amusing, and I do enjoy all the hints on starting a clowning business. Lots of detailed information.

Also, the book is packed with numerous jokes and material that can be used for shows. The next stage for me will be learning how to twist balloons into different animal shapes.

I was actually looking for a book on how to put on clowns' make-up for my unicycling. This book is all you need to know about various types of make-up for various clown types, plus so much more. If you're thinking about clowning, either for fun or for money, I highly recommend this book!

I'm considering setting up as a childrens entertainer, so I purchased a good few books. This is without doubt the best of the bunch.

The book covers lots of aspects of clowning, gives great ideas, and is an easy read.

The only downside is that it does not have space to go as in depth in some areas as I would of liked - but there are plenty of speciality books to do so.

I thought this book was informative, extremely informative for new clowns. You get a history of clowning, pictures of famous clowns, and jokes on most of the pages to use when performing. There is a chapter on how to develop your own clown character which also explains the different types of clowns (Whiteface, Auguste, Tramp and Character), their makeup and their character. Mimes are not excluded either! Topics covered are: clown outfits, props, routines, expression, timing, and working with partners. There are even chapters on balloon art, puppets, juggling, stilt walking, unicycling, and balancing objects. I found the last few chapters very helpful. They gave tips on designing your own business cards so people won't throw them away and how to get bookings and also how much to charge. There is a great Publications and Organization section full of books and suppliers. I would certainly recommend this book to any one who is interested in clowning around! This book has it all!

This book is an unusual children's book and about a character whose artwork will appeal to children. Although his life is not an uplifting story, the book picks up on the important parts and gives a feeling for what "Action Jackson" was all about. His freedom to create what he wanted and put his feeling on canvas is an important message to children who need to know that there are many way to be creative. That is it is OK to put their feeling into their art without worrying about whether it is "right" or "good". It is a quiet book about an artist who was quiet but whose life was certainly active as was his art.

This book is so very well done -- lots of biographical facts woven into a beautifully illustrated story from the most peaceful and productive phase of Pollock's life. Just right for younger elementary school students -- and also good for older ones when you add the fuller biography in the back. A really wonderful book about an important artist and about making art.

In 1996, Dr. Edwards was featured on the Sally Jessy Raphael Show for making a significant difference in a former student's life that was born with a physical disability, Nancy Johnson Miller. At the time of their initial meeting, Dr. Edwards was a first-year Physical Education teacher at the school where Ms. Miller was a 5th grade student. According to Ms. Miller, Dr. Edwards was instrumental in enabling her to move past her diability by accepting it and by being confident in using and/ or developing the talents that God did give her.
As a result of hearing about his impact on this student's life, Dr. Edwards wrote this book. Since then the two have created the Edwards-Miller Foundation for Physical Disabilities, Inc, to provide scholarships for physically challenged individuals to pursue a college education.

We've found this book extremely useful for guiding us in choosing development tasks to work on with our delayed daughter. The book contains a lot of detail on breaking down large developmental goals into small, attainable steps. There is a large section devoted to outlining "objectives", giving suggestions as to how to attain them, and examples of rewards. We've found this very valuable and concrete -- it gives very detailed and clear examples of how to work on these goals. This is the book we've used most in working with our daughter at home.

The 1956 version of 'The Ten Commandments' is easily one of the most popular films in Hollywood history, eclipsing even Ben-Hur. (Let the protests begin!) Charlton Heston won his only Oscar for his performance in Ben-Hur, but it is in his role as Moses where he clearly had the most defining and remarkable performance of his distinguished career. I've seen the film countless times and couldn't recommend it more enthusiastically. Interestingly, Demille's first go at this story during the silent era is a tremendous curiosity and quite a puzzling oddity. The first half of the film presents a fairly generic although competent survey of the Moses/Exodus story, but only when the film abruptly segues into a modern day morality play involving two brothers, does the actual head scratching begin. Unfortunately, this part of the film was meant to be the heart and soul of Demille's picture, but it amounts to some kind of strange ham fisted unintentional parody of such odious transparency and bludgeoning obviousness that I found myself chuckling and shrugging throughout. It's actually difficult to review this film objectively because I still appreciate Demille's attempt here to really say something, however much a failure it may have been. Fortunately, he quite thouroughly redeemed himself with the '56 remake.

We watched this movie around Easter and decided to get it. We are very happy with the versions that are included. A good movie to have on hand when you want to watch it.

I bought this to add to my collection of Charlton Heston movies. I had seen it many times on television. An outstanding performance!

For many people Cecil B. DeMille's 1956 remake of his own THE TEN COMMANDMENTS is so iconic it practically defines the Hollywood movie as much as any picture (with the possible exception of GONE WITH THE WIND). Even more than fifty years later it's capable of giving tremendous pleasure despite its incredible length (three hours and thirty-nine minutes) and its style which was extremely anachronistic even for the time. DeMille, who had forever made his name as one of the most important and powerful directors of the silent era, directs his actors as if they still were in the silents, so their gestures and poses are big and their emotions even bigger. Probably the most fun for contemporary audiences is Anne Baxter as the Throne Princess Nefretiri, who gets to deliver all kinds of howlers to Charlton Heston as Moses ("You will be king of Egypt and I will be your footstool!"), but pretty much everyone involved seems to be having a grand old time. Particularly fun are Yul Brynner as a haughty Pharaoh Ramses, Nina Foch as the kindly Princess Bithia, Edward G. Robinson in his bizarre role as Dathan the evil Hebrew governor, and Sir Cedric Hardwicke as the old pharaoh Seti.

And then there's the spectacle, which every DeMille movie promises and on which he did not skimp in this film. One of DeMille's specialties was the presentation of the more salacious aspects of sinfulness, and so we have no less than two extended sequences with dancing girls, not to mention Baxter's diaphanous gowns and Brynner and Heston and John Derek (as a Douglas Fairbanks-like Joshua) wearing practically nothing on their chests for large periods of the film. There's also the killing of the firstborn of Egypt, the staining of the Nile, and pillar of fire, the Golden Calf and a very impressive parting of the Red Sea (the most famous of the film's sequences). Heston seems stranger and stranger as the film progresses, with even wilder wigs, but all this seems in keeping with the entire tone of the thing. Even when you laugh at it you can't help but be impressed.

This fiftieth-anniversary edition adds DeMille's long missing introduction to his own film plus long musical sequences for the overture and the entr'acte; it also comes with his original 1923 version (which is extremely different, with sections set in the contemporary period for the time much like Griffith's INTOLERANCE).

I recommend this book to all my friends who are in relationships or are single but are wanting to look at how inter-gender relations ought to be carried out, biblically. My boyfriend and I read it and it has been a great "yellow line" (reference to an analogy Harris gives) for us.

I've read some mixed reviews on this book, so I was pleasantly surprised at how much I loved this book. It was clear cut, honest and based on the Word. This book was great. I am currently in a relationship "with a purpose"- and while we agreed on it's purpose from the start, I was unsure of the specifics. This book was so thorough- it answered all my questions, and shed light on the gray areas. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is considering courting, in the midst of a Courtship, or just wondering what it's all about. The author uses real life examples to illusrate the principles being discussed. It also provides insight on everything from broaching the subject of courtship/marriage to how to handle it if your interests is not reciprocated to discussing/accepting one another's pasts. Simply stated, this is a great book. It tells the truth without preaching at you.

I read this book and decided I do not like Joshua Harris that much, the book itself wasn't very helpful.

As a reformed Christian, I had kind of dismissed Joshua Harris as the typical evangelical writer of the day, more secular psychology than biblical teaching. A man I respected recommend "Sex is not the Problem, Lust is" which I read and benefited from, so when the parents of the girl I'm dating asked me to read this, I was very willing.

It's a solid book with a lot of practical help in how to intelligently evaluate whether the two of you should marry.

This book is really good for high school age, when your about to start dating--read this first! I read it when I was in High school and for me it really let me know where to draw the line in my relationships. I'm so glad I read it, I truely learned so much.. and it was interesting. Alot of sweet stories that blow your mind. If you want God's will and his standard in your relationships... read this book. It's very instructional on how to date and who to date AND most importantly please God.
