I am a Christian, a Methodist, who loves to dig into issues and find clarity, especially when comparing religions. This book has real meat for these bones of investigation. I came away with more understanding and acceptance of the Jewish viewpoint. I am still a Methodist. Great book.

This book, by a Jewish rabbi and a famous Christian scholar of the Hebrew Bible, is a major contribution to intelligent religious dialog in a pluralistic society. It provides an excellent text for discussion groups and, with its pleasing style and lively examples, is a pleasure to read and study.

A crash course in the city's literary history

Santa Fe is home to an amazing abundance of well-known and talented authors--literally dozens of them--and this little book is an amazing guide to the city's incredible literary history.
The book is divided into two easy walking tours--one in the plaza area and one around Canyon Road--and using those two tours to give the book a structure, this very readable little volume gives a concise and clearly written crash course in the city's literary past. What's even cooler is that you can't really tell such a history without incorporating facts from the city's broader history, so by the time you reach the last page, you're guaranteed to know the City Different much better than you ever did. It'll make you see the place differently, for sure.
This is one of three great books about literary Santa Fe (that I know of), and certainly the fastest read of the bunch. For anyone who lives in New Mexico, and especially for anyone who lives in or visits Santa Fe, I couldn't recommend it more highly.
The author also gives actual walking tours of the city (which inspired this book), and if you ever get a chance to take one, you really should. They're as good as the book--except you'll need to find a place to park.

Barbara Harrelson has put together a wonderful way to explore the very interesting city of Santa Fe. More than just a guide book to Santa Fe, it is more like a knowledgible friend taking you by the hand and leading you on adventures both historical and modern.
For example. How many of us know that the English writer D. H. Lawrence owned a ranch a few miles from Taos, New Mexico, and his wife Frieda lived out the rest of her life there after D. H. died. They are both buried on the ranch.
Have this book in hand when you explore Santa Fe and the surrouning area, or when you just want to curl up in a comfortable chair in your home to learn something about the history of the Southwest.

The first thing that struck me with this novel was the fact it is just plain, simple FUN fantasy! It flows perfectly from page to page and just keeps the adventure coming. I was also impressed with the number of pop-culture reference's subtly (and sometimes not)thrown in, I found reference's to Mark Twain, and the Beatles among others. If you are looking for a simple, and fun book to read, I highly advise you pick this up. Good stuff.

Having never heard of this author before, I started reading this novel with a little bit of trepidation at first. However, it wasn't long before that changed. The story developed nicely and once it got started, the action never seemed to let up. I was also surprised to find that some of the locations in his "Britannia" were actual places, so this lent some authenticity to the tale. I couldn't pin his era down to a particular year, but that didn't detract one bit from it.
The author infused his story with lots of witty humour that I found to be a welcome change from the typical dry books I've read before. And without giving too much away, the group that is encountered toward the end of the tale, which he calls the Merseybeats and reside near Liverpool, reminds me an awful lot of another "fab four" group of musicians. And any book featuring Stonehengians is more than welcome in my house! To think, that after all these years, the mysteries of Stonehenge solved at last!
All in all, if this is his first fantasy effort, I hope it catches on. I would like to have more adventures featuring these belovable characters.

This is the familiar tale of Snow White and the seven dwarfs illustrated with adorable pictures of dogs, who play the parts of the characters. The story of course is classic the illustrations funny, cute, and down right enjoyable for any age dog lover. A wonderful read-together book for little ones or a great reading book for those who can already read. My daughter,6 years old, and I read this book together and she wanted me to immediately read it again.

This book has been widely used as a springboard for Sunday school discussions. It is also a delight for any thoughtful reader, who may feel inclined to enter the discussion by making elaborate notes in the margins of the text. While readers may well disagree with some of the assertions made by Falk and Harrelson, they will certainly be stimulated by the ideas of these two wise and eloquent men.

This NRSV study Bible is an exceptional resource. I'm no theologian--just an earnest church fellow who desires to know more. The footnotes and Biblical scholars' notes provide a thorough understanding of the text, its historical context, and its relevance in today's world. This is an excellent supplement to daily reading and prayer, and I've used it to great success to help flesh out the Sunday School lessons that I teach to high school students. I highly recommend this Bible.

I won't say anything about the NRSV translation - this has been dealt with in many other reviews.
I have an Oxford Revised English Study Bible (which is very good), but wanted an NRSV Study Bible for comparison. I narrowed down my selection to this Bible or the Oxford Annotated NRSV Bible, and went with this one because I already had an Oxford. I've gone through several sections in the Torah and the New Testament already.
There are a few things about this Bible that are great. It does have copious commentary, much more than the Oxford RE Study Bible. In the Torah, for example, it makes clear which writer is writing (J/P/E/D) and highlights subtle differences. It puts text in context by highlighting cultural norms as well as parallel myths from other cultures such as Gilgamesh or the Enuma Elish. The commentary I read in this section was very helpful.
Yet much of the commentary in sections of the New Testament that I read was obvious and not necessary. For example, when Jesus performs one miracle it will say that he's going to go on to perform another miracle. This is completely obvious from a cursory reading and not worth printing, in my opinion. There is some good commentary, but I was quite disappointed. The Oxford RE Study Bible has less written, but what it does have is much more astute. Side by side I think the New Interpreter may have slightly more commentary worth printing, but you have to wade through the shallow commentary as well. Spraying the universe with words is not my idea of good scholarship.
In retrospect I think that the Oxford Annotated NRSV Bible would have been better. From what I have seen, this does have different commentary than the Oxford RE Study Bible. I will still give the New Interpreter's Study Bible four stars. I like the commentary more than my Oxford REB. My criticism is to help you choose - I still think that it is a very good Bible that contains good commentary, but don't buy it because it has more comments.

This book is very well organized. There is SO much information in this one book. I look forward to preparing some of these dishes. Generally, I find raw food recipes complicated, but worth it in the end. This author certainly knows her stuff and is not afraid to preach. That does not turn me off, however. I plan to read it from cover to cover!

I was very impressed with the information in the first half of the book. I learned a lot of useful tips to help in the raw foods diet. I only gave it 4 stars because I was disappointed in the recipes, the majority of which use soy products. The fact that many of the recipes involve steaming makes it perfect for someone transitioning or dealing with a compromised digestive system, but it is not 100% raw.
NOT for the Fast-raw-foodist but for those that LOVE to cook this is it!! YUM!!

I love this book. After buying Gabriel Cousen's Rinbow Green Live-Food Cuisine I was curious to try converting to raw. Unfortunately as a food LOVER it was hard finding complex and tasty tempters which could convince me to convert for good. This book is it. Everything in the recipe section is created using a variety of fresh complimentary flavors YEAH!! and TONS of desserts! Double-YEAH!
True, the author includes several recipes which include blanching and steaming - unheard of to all you purists (myself included at the moment) but if you read the Title section of the chapter on warming food she explains why this might be necessary for some people - you can certainly bypass the step or omit/replace the WARMED(eeek!) ingredient.
I also appreciate the index on utensils and produce which although maybe a little too thorough - does provide a lot of information on lesser known varieties... I can't wait to find an...eggfruit!?!

Living Cuisine provides a great education on the raw food way of life. It is one cookbook that you will actually read. The recipes are definitely at the gourmet end of the raw food spectrum. I would highly recommend this book for individuals moving from a novice to advanced raw food diet. The book uses advanced preparation techniques and the recipes require extensive ingredients, many are hard to find.
While an intriguing read, this is not a good first book for those just starting a raw food way of life.

This book contains most anything you'd like to know about this TV show but I was very dissapointed that, with such a high price, there are hardly any photos (all are in B&W), the book is rather small and it doesn't even have a cover jacket. Anyway, the contents are as good as can be expected and the subject makes it a must buy (of sorts !) for fans of the show.

I am a fan of many sitcoms, and take a keen interest in any books on the subject. "Cheers" is one of my all-time favorities. "Toasting Cheers" is the most well-written, comprehensive, and thorough book ever to grace the shelves of any library. Every section is inordinately detailed to give the reader a strong sense of knowledge about the show, the characters, and the actors. The author definitely knows the subject matter better than anyone else. The book is a must-buy for anyone who loves the show.

This book is almost scientific in its construction. Not only does it provide accurate information about the lives and the careers of the series creators and actors (without turning to gossip), but also chronological stories of the fictional characters they portrayed on television, showing the narrative richness of Cheers. The episode guide comes in handy if you plan to impress your drinking buddy with quite useless but entertaining Cliffy style Cheers trivia, especially the notable quotes are of use. If you're a true Cheers fan, this book is a must.
