This is a brilliantly written book about remarkable and eccentric character in the Indian films. Guru Dutt was a complex man but a simple soul who was always unhappy with his life. Unlike other filmmakers, Guru Dutt did not copy western filmmakers. You can read this book many times and still not figure out what Guru Dutt wanted in life or what type of person is he. Does any one know what they want in life? Many of his colleagues become emotionally attached to him. That was his legacy.

a very well researched work

The author states that she came up with the idea of writing this book while she was working on a documentary on Guru Dutt for Channel 4. Therefore, this book contains rare insights by people who knew Guru Dutt intimately. This is what gives this book its life. And if you haven't watched the 3 part documentary made by the author I strongly recommend it. There you will find Guru Dutt's friend speak about him with emotions, something missing from the book.(January 2000)

The 3 part documentary is now available bundled with a special edition of Guru Dutt's Pyaasa released by Yash Raj Films. (Oct. 2002).

Highly recommended for the romantics of Hindi Cinema

This book on Guru Dutt and his films is a rare insight into his life and works. This book soulfully touches the different aspects of his life, the shaping factors, love of the people around him ,the deep spiritual quality and poeticism of his films. It is fitting tribute to Guru Dutt. This is a lovable book can be read again and again. People with whom Guru Dutt worked like Kaifi Azmi ,Raj Khosla and others have so many interesting things to say about the person they loved and respected so much. Guru Dutt and Sahir Ludhiyanwi had some differences after and 'Pyaasa'. The author says that their differences existed only at the superficial level. Their souls merged at a much deeper level in their works How true! In fact when Guru sings 'Yeh Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaaaye...' it appears that the persona of Guru Dutt, Sahir has merged into one. It is the cry of the eternal poet . I compliment Nasreen Munni Kabeer for this piece of work. Like Guru Dutt's work, this book is meant to be felt deeply not just read from an intellectual perspective.

You may think, 'Who cares about Indian cinema?'...

when you read this book you will understand why Indian films, at least those of Guru Dutt, have depth and are capable of moving people. There are few books written about Indian cinema as a whole. This book is different because it relies on first-hand memories of the people who worked with Guru Dutt, people who knew him personally, and people whose lives were transformed by their association with him. This book is worth reading if you're interested in cinema or in India.

My three-year-old grandson loves the movie "Happy Feet". When I saw this book, I knew he would love it too. However, when it arrived, I was amazed at the quality. The pictures come right from the movie and the story is carefully condensed without losing the integrity of the movie. My grandson looked at the pictures and told me what was happening in each one because they follow the movie exactly. This is one of the books that he will keep all his life and share with his own children some day.

Mumble is a great name for this penguin, and the story does send the message to be true to yourself. Kids need to hear this and recognize that their differences are special gifts. It was wonderful to watch children dancing their own happy dances after hearing this story. The movie is also great and pleasing that the message is "happy" and not violent or cynical.

I love these kinds of pull-off calendars. My only problem is the events of the calendar are random, and sometimes it seems like they picked certain pictures for certain days, and sometimes not. Most of the pictures are nice though, and I enjoy pulling every day off.

This is a great addition to anyones collection of Potter items. I am both a childrens novelist and a teacher. I use this day-to-day calendar in my classroom so that the children can share my happyness with it. It covers many fantastic Harry Potter Scenes to make everyday a magic day. Often, my students will beg for yesterdays calendar picture, so I always offer it to the students who perform well on that day.

I strongly recommend this for educators or potter fans alike. It really livens up your days.

This calendar contains high quality pictures from the movie on every page and is sure to keep the owner of it delighted each week. It seems as if all the actors and actresses have at least one page in this calendar. It does not begin until January 2005; however, it is fun to buy it early and flip through the pages to look at the pictures. The velvety cover gives it a fancy and precious look to it. I bought this for my homework planner, and I can't wait to use it next year.

I wanted this as a Christmas present and was so excited when I opened it at the quality that I am online buying another one. (This is so I can "keep one nice," and actually use one.)

The other lady's review is right on. The cover is embossed velvet and the little silver latch is charming. Each page has a picture/scene from the movie (even pictures from deleted scenes) and the opposing weekly "date" page is watermarked with a coinciding or "thematic"(for lack of a better word) match.

Even my other half who thinks I'm a complete HP idiot said, "That's pretty cool, actually." This is high praise in comparison to his normal monosyllabic grunt in regard to all things HP... (And then, "I don't know why you have it, you will never WRITE in it...")
So, here I am buying one to write in! Guess I showed HIM! Ha ha ha! (And I'm over the age of...gulp, sigh...40.)

Shelia Wood Foard has created a great resource for middle-grade teachers to use in their classroom. What better way to reach students than with literature that speaks to them and tells a story--a Harvey Girl's story at that! Children love to learn about the past, and they love stories. Foard's book does a wonderful job of both. Harvey Girl would be a great read aloud or an even better literature circle discussion book. Check it out today!

I enjoyed "Harvey Girl" very much. Foard is a good writer. She obviously knows her history but she also knows the value of a good story. Through the skillful use of fiction and the development of Claire, the main character, the entire era comes alive. I particularly liked the way in which the early twentieth century Ozarks culture and dialect were so faithfully portrayed. You'll like this story and learn some new things as well. I guarantee!

A Delicious Read

Harvey Girl is as delicious as the gourmet food once served in Harvey Houses along the railways of the Southwest. Sheila Wood Foard sweeps readers into the past, in a story that both kids and adults will enjoy. Ride the rails with fourteen-year-old Clara Fern Massie as she runs away from her Ozark home to become a waitress in New Mexico and later at a Harvey House on the rim of the Grand Canyon. As she learns the "Harvey Way," Clara meets movie stars, famous suffragists, cowboys and Indians while secrets and lies threaten to send her home. I especially enjoyed watching Clara mature from a country girl to an independent, young woman. Harvey Girl is historical fiction at its best, a terrific read and ideal for classroom use.

Cool, this is more a picture book, and not a reading book... But that's one of the reasons i love it so much, the pics are great and NOT blurry.. The story is not very good, it's for little children, but i'm a big (15 years old) fan so i bought it anyway.... and i love it because of the pics, the pics come from their party video "Hawaiien Beach Party" and are kinda rare.. so i give this book 4 stars for the pics!! and the story?? well.. i give that a 0... but i think the pics are more important so i still give this book 4 stars, if you are an MKA fan you gotta get this book!! it's a collecters item!!

This book is a must have for any Heath Ledger fan! It begins with Heath's birth and home life in Perth, Australia, and leads up to his final two roles in Hollywood. Each chapter includes information from the family as well as many family photographs. While Heath and Michelle are protective of their little girl Matilda, Heath does talk some about becoming a parent and how Matilda changed his life. A great read, appropriate photos, as well as lots of information from many different interviews.

A must have if you have ever enjoyed a Heath Ledger movie!!!

It's amazing that the following mistakes appear in this book:

1) A reference to Cecil B. DeMille's "Sunset Boulevard".
It's Billy Wilder's and Leigh Brackett's picture. DeMille had
a cameo in it.

2) Donna Douglas (of "Beverly Hillbillies" fame) is referred to
in a caption as "Donna Dixon" and in the accompanying text as
"Joey Heatherton".

3) Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman, in English riding clothes,
are described as wearing "Western gear".

4) Sammy Davis Jr's ex-wife, Mai Britt, is twice referred to as
"May Britt".

Did anybody edit this book, or were Garrett's reminiscences taken
on faith because he, of all people, should know?

This book captures a Hollywood that I remember as my home town and really was the entertainment capitol of the world. The pictures are unique, and definitely candid. Murray's comments about the stars shed new insights into the personalities and quirks of some of the most loved and famous celebrities of the era. A beautiful collection of memorys from a man who approaches Hollywood from an honest, compasionate and humorous point of view. Highly recommended.

This is a wonderful compilation of photographs and text taken throughout the years by Murray Garrett. All of the Hollywood golden age stars are featured: Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Jean Simmons, Natalie Wood, Ava Gardner. The photos catch the personal side of the stars, such as the photo of Richard Burton strapped into an airline seat along with his daughter's doll, as well as their entrances into glamourous events. He also adds his personal recollections such as Ava Gardner's love of jokes, off color or not, Eve Arden's love of her daughter, the secrecy of Natalie Wood's 21st birthday party. The stories are fascinating. The pictures are beautiful and unique. I am glad Murray decided to share them with us.

Unlike other episode guides, this book doesn't give the useless details showwing every action a character makes. For a Buffy and Angel fan such as me you probably seen every episode and season so you know what's going to happen. This book however does give you unique headings such as Logic Let Me Introduce You To This Window which features all the plot flaws, goofs and stunt double that look nothing like the actor. It also includes Dudes and Babes which takes a look at the cute guys and girls shown. The Charisma Show relives the funny and cool bits that Cordelia does. LA Speak gives quotes on the street talk seen on teh show. Designer Label highlights the fashion mistakes so when you watch the episode again you cna take a moment to laugh. It catches all the juicy details missing from regular guides and has a unique style.
I recommend this book and Slayer ( Buffy version) because of it's uniqueness and is a simply must for any fan.

This guide to the TV series "Angel" is a british book by british author Keith Topping(who also did one for Buffy too called "Slayer"), and it's a good, well put together book. You will definitley have a great time with it. It is kinda funny to read it because it's british, but that's what also makes it really interesting. A british perspective on things. The book has descriptions of all the episodes for the show's first two seasons. Along with each episode, comes a number of categories with it.... which has some of the best of the nasty dialogue. It has critiques and notes from critics including the author. It also features "L.A. Speak", featuring slang used in the series. "Logic, Let Me Throw You Out This Window" is about all of the mistakes and goof ups in the show. There is even a section dealing with fashion and describes what characters were wearing and if they were good or not. Plus, there is just some dialogue. Topping really outdoes himself getting into the specifics of the mistakes, or just little details in the background or in the forefront. This guy really has a keen eye!. What would've made this book better was if there were some pictures. Nope. Not here. That is the only drawback to this exceptional book. Topping is a fan. He writes as a fan. He can be overy critical for some episodes, but isn't that a way die hard fans should be?. A great, fun read with really cool tidbits. Fans should really enjoy this!.

This is an excellent guide to seasons 1-4 of Angel. It has very interesting unknown facts. The one that I was most surprised about was that Charisma Carpenter was almost raped back when she was a cheerleader for the Chargers. But with a gun to her and her friends heads she refused to back down. For a more detailed description of this event buy the book.

I also love how it had quotes from each episode. Usually the funniest ones.

Go out and buy this now!

Keith Topping is the best writer of tv episode guides in the business, and this book is another winner. What keeps Keith's guides at the top of the pile is his sense of humour and his infectious admiration for the shows he writes about. His Buffy guide, 'Slayer', is the best episode guide I've read about the show, and this book stands right alongside it as far as detail, opinion and humour go.

If you want a dry, humourless bunch of lists and facts about Angel, give this book a miss. However, if you want a well written and opinionated book with so much detail that you'll re-read it again and again, then this is the book for you. If you are an avid viewer of Angel, you'll be going back to this book frequently.
