I forced myself to finish this book, because I always believe that a book has potential and it might get better. Well this one didn't. I don't think I have ever read a heroine who delighted more in making herself miserable. For the majority of the book every word out of her mouth to her husband is in anger, with endless threats and cruel words. Then she feels bad about what she says and then yells at him again, then wails over her bad relationship with him The husband delights in being punished because he puts up with the shrew, laughs when she insults him, and can't stop sleeping with her even when she talks badly about his former wife, whom he loved. Then all of a sudden, oh my gosh, she loves him, where did that come from? This woman is completely unlovable, untrustworthy, and I suppose we were supposed to feel sympathetic to her, because she was running (always running) from her past. However we never really know what she is running from so any sympathy is lost with her racism towards Native Americans and her willingness to be nice to ANYONE except the man who saved her from the bad guys. Oh yes, everybody loves her at first sight because shes pretty and that excuses her behavior in almost every situation.
I couldn't wait for the book to end just so I could finish it and get it over with. It wasn't just the lack of romance between the characters, but the story was so dry and predictable. I found myself skipping page after page describing the history of Florida. I like history, but a lot of it wasn't necessary and 8 pages is a bit much.
I'm not going to judge an author on one book, but I was very disappointed with this one and I will be hesitant in reading anything of hers again.

Good incorporation of history and romance but........

I immediately liked this book because it was about Florida which is a state that I am very fond of and because my parents are moving there soon, I was even more intrigued to find out about this exotic land's past. I think that if you are a person who is drawn to stories with adventure and mystery, this is a good book for you but be aware that the main focus of the story is the passionate and confusing relationship of the two main characters. There was a lot of sex involved to say the least but it was done with taste. My only complaint is that by the middle of this book I grew annoyed and bored of the extreme love/hate romance between Jarrett and Tara. The constant "I wanted to rip his eyes out and touch his brozed muscles at the same time" attitude of Tara was overdone but nearing the end of the book I fell in love with the characters and felt the ending was very compelling.

Not very exciting

This was the first Heather Graham book I read. I didn't care for it very much. In fact, I was half way through and decided it was no longer worth my time. I think there's potential for me to like the author....just not this book. The reasons for the antagonism between the two main characters was stupid. They were fighting over really dumb things. I love history and romance and lived in Florida for awhile so it looked like a good book.

I've ordered a couple other of the author's books because I see the potential for good writing. I hope I like them.

Sooo Good!!!!!!!

I got this book by chance only having read one of Heather Graham's modern day books and thought it was good but not great. After reading "Runaway" I hunted down the rest of the series. I loved Tara and Jarrett. It is total romance and steamy as well. It takes away from the real world and the way things are done in todays time. You have to read "Captive" after this.

Great Start to an Awesome Series

I thought this was a great start to the whole McKenzie series. You can see where the rest of the family gets their strength and courage. Jarrett holds a strength that is comforting and protective. He is non judgemental (as seen in the following books of the series)and holds to a set of values and will not let anyone harm those that he loves. I loved the character of Robert as well. Too bad there wasn't more of him. What a great friend to have. And Tara brings a grace and elegance that just lets Jarrett think he is in charge.

I'll admit, I was intrigued the for the first 20 or 30 pages of the book when you first meet this supposedly drop dead gorgeous poor young orphan. However, after the 2 handsome strangers jerk her away to meet her "rich" estranged family all the suspense dies there. There is absolutely NO PLOT in this book and the romantic dialogue in the book certainly does NOT make you blush! So if the books is free, try it, but if its not, don't waste your hard earned money!

I've only ever read one other book by Heather Graham before (and didn't enjoy it very much), but knowing her popularity, I decided to pick this up and give her writing another chance.

What a pleasant surprise. While no deep thought went into historical accuracy, or the characters (the subcharacters are particularly shallow, changing their personalities like other people change clothes), the book is actually a "good read", mostly due to a hero who becomes more & more sympathetic as the book goes on (he's the first to admit his love, if only to himself). Not quite a keeper, perhaps, but definitely a guilty pleasure!

I am a Pamunkey Indian and I wish to commend Ms. Graham for her research and correct use of the Tribe in her book. This is the ONLY book I have ever seen that uses the Tribe name and the history of our people. We are the forgotten tribe. I love to read historical romances and this is one of the best I have ever read. I had to buy the book again as my last copy began to fall apart from my constant rereading of it.

Heroine is a bit hard to sympathize with - I found her spoiled and obnoxious - but the romance itself is sensual and appealing. The author's knowledge of colonial and Virginia history is evident as always. Highly recommend!

This was my first time reading a Heather Graham book and I really enjoyed this one! This book is a great mystery that keeps you guessing until the very last pages, but also a wonderful, steamy romance book! I liked the idea of two high school sweathearts reuniting after years apart. I think it reminds us all of our first love or the huge crush you had on someone in high school and you always wondered "what if". All in all, this was a really fun read, the kind of book you pass along to all your friends. I look forward to spending many more late nights reading Heather Graham!

Oh boy, where to start? Well, if you like poor writing, utterly predictable romance settings & situations, melodramatic dialogue of the usual Harlequin archetype, and one-deminsional characters ripped directely from a soap opera (the author even has her darlings compare themselves to 'The Bold and the Beautiful'--not once but two or maybe three times!), then this book is for you. Me, I read it out of desperation, being stuck in an English-Void while vacationing in Russia. Needless to say, I felt my IQ diminish rapidly with each painful page to the obvious climatic 'confusion/resolution.' In fact, the characters were so banal that half-way through I began rooting for the killer to succeed in his malevolent plan...until he was revealed as just as shallow as those he was knifing and strangling. Bah. I shed tears for all the trees slaughtered to fill the bestseller shelves with this worthless pulp. I hope the author enjoys her new SUV...

Beware of Ouji Boards!

Review Date: 2008-04-29
Christina Hardy is moving back into her grandma's old house--one that holds many memories, good and bad. Unfortunately, the return of a serial killer who is targeting beautiful red-heads (such as Christina), Christina's hidden-until-now predilection to see ghosts and some messing with a Ouija board at her housewarming party opens the door for Christina to become haunted by the cop who was originally accused of the killings and who wants Christina to clear his name.

Jed Braden, former cop turned novel-writer and private investigator, is a distant relation of Christina's. He's looking into the murders, concerned because one of his books was a fictionalized account that went along with everyone's belief that the cop did it--only the cop was killed and now the murders have started again. If it's not a copy-cat, Jed wants to help clear the dead cop and his own conscience for adding to the family's pain. And he's romantically interested in Christina--who with her red hair, is in danger until the killer is caught.

The tale is quite readable and suspenseful. Graham is an old and sure hand at these things. I'm not sure this is one of her best, though, since there was sparks but not much of a relationship, otherwise, between Jed and Christina. But if mystery is what you care about, this one was pretty good. I did figure it out before the end, which is rare for me, but it was still unusual enough to be interesting.

This book was quick to read and would make an appropriate beach bag book. The paranormal aspect was intereting but the murder mystery was actually not well thought out or explained. It was easy to figure out who the murderer was but it never explained why he became a murderer, I would have rated the book higher if the author had spent a little time explaining that aspect.

Redheads are being murdered one by one in this haunting chiller by popular author Heather Graham. Christina Hardy meets the accused killer, but there's only one problem: Beau Kidd is dead. The ghost professes his innocence and pleads with her to find the real culprit. Skeptic cop turned PI Jed Braden doesn't want to believe her, not even when Beau's sister hires him for the same purpose. Can he learn the truth before Christina becomes the next victim? Besides the romance between the main characters, this mystery kept me guessing whodunit until the end.

I have read almost of all Heather Grahams books as well as the her "Shannon Drake" novels...this one wasn't as good though. It was laborious and I figured out who the killer was...but there was no basis as to why. If you're a fan then you must read it. Otherwise don't expect much. My favorite character is "killer" Christine's dog.

I have read some of Heather Grahams books and enjyed them. This was my first ever vampire novel. I did enjoy it, more than I expected to. She did a good job of keeping the suspense going, but the ending brought the rating down for me. I thought the end was too simple, very elementary. If she would have done a better job on the ending I would have given it a 4 or 4 & 1/2 stars. Sorry but the ending can make or break a novel for me at least!!

I also felt like I had missed something along the way in this book. I went back and reread the beginning to make sure I hadn't skipped over something important when I was about half way through the book. It just didn't flow well to me. I thought the characters were silly not to have realized who they really were. Also, since the main femaile character was supposed to be very powerful and had almost defeated the bad guy before, why was she worried this time? The ending also left me cold. Altogether, I was very disappointed since I really enjoy reading vampire novels.

I didn't expect much after reading the back cover and was therefore pleasantly surprised by the well rounded the story of Jessica Fraser, psychologist and bed & breakfast owner in New Orleans. I'd categorize the book as a vampire mystery with some well placed love scenes thrown in rather than a vampire romance novel. There's a fresh new take on vampires and vampire hunters to surprise the reader and even though I wasn't compelled to read it in one day I was sufficiently interested by the story to finish the book and the further I read the more I was curious how the author would let it all end.

Jessica Fraser travels to Transylvania for a conference. She is plagued the night before with unrest and questions why the idea of travel has her so upset. Despite her misgivings she packs her bags and wings her way east. While in Romania she feels as if she's being watched by the man she dreams about called "Master." She meets a man named Bryan and he requests her help and Jessica is not sure if she should help him or not. She's hiding a secret but the attraction she feels for Bryan is too strong. Together they will team up to fight evil but will they have a chance to be happy after the dust settles?

What can you say...It's Heather Graham. This was a fantastic page turner and one that I highly recommend. It was thrilled to find this was a continuation of her vampire stories she penned under her other name Shannon Drake. Ms. Graham is a wonderful talent who manages to interweave several different storylines together which ultimately gives the book more depth. Bryan and Jessica are fine additions to the stories she's created and the chemistry that burns between them is sexy. I highly recommend this read.

This book was terrible. The Vampire storyline is the reason I got the book. Only to find the Vampirism to be written so terribly dull and predicable. The only so-called humor is when you laugh at the the fact that the author used awful and over done, vampire lines. Very cheesy, and not worth the time to read it.

The second installment of Heather Graham's vampire series was definitely better than the first, but over all could have been better itself. The characters were likable, but the fact that Mark was a good vampire was rather predictable. (This was confused though, by the fact that Lauren could hear his heart beat as they made love.) The story was more in the vein of failed soap opera Port Charles, as Ms. Graham seemed to make up her own rules for vampires (Holy Water only effects the evil vampires, they only turn to ashes when they are old enough for their bodies to have completely decomposed, and they can walk around during the day.)

I am a 23 year old female and I not only loved this book, but related to it as well. The three main characters Lauren, Heidi, and Deanna (sorry for spelling) reminded me of myself and 2 of my best gal friends. It is very up to date on the New Orleans atmosphere and the suspense is killer! Literally. I am addicted to this genre now and I can't wait to read more Heather Graham novels. This book flows very nicely and the action is a hook throughout the entire book. I have recommended this read to all of my gal friends and everyone of them can not wait to read it!

Such a great Vampire-Romance novel. The ending is kinda blah, but the rest of the book makes up for it. Its only 7 bucks and some odd change so, "Get to it!" It will be worth your time and pennies!

Lauren Crow is not having a good time.

After accompanying her friends Heidi and Deanna on a trip to New Orleans to celebrate Heidi's upcoming wedding, she receives bad news: her life is in danger.

The giver of this news is Susan, a fortune teller in Jackson Square. She stares into her crystal ball and tells Lauren to leave, to take her friends and go. Something stalks her, something wants her and she is in danger.

As if that weren't bad enough, she is being followed by a man named Mark Davidson. After finding Lauren in a New Orleans bar, he doesn't want to let her out of his sight. She is the spitting image of Katie, his first love, who was killed so many years ago by a murderous vampire.

Mark knows that if he lets Lauren out of his sight for one moment, Stephan will claim Lauren for his just like he did Katie. Lauren, however, is having none of this. She doesn't believe in vampire mumbo jumbo and won't accept the truth.

Until the vampire starts to hunt one of her friends. Suddenly the danger they are all in is very real and Lauren must rely on Mark for help. She must also try to ignore the growing passion that sparks to life between them.

But some things don't always go as planned...

Blood Red manages to breathe new life into the tired genre of vampire fiction and it does it extremely well. Having never read a book by Heather Graham before I wasn't sure what to expect; I didn't know if I was in for a bodice ripper with fangs or a book with fangs with a touch of fire. Thankfully it was the latter.

What makes Blood Red so successful is the characters. Lauren is no cardboard cut out heroine. She is tough and stands well on her own two feet. Mark Davidson, vampire hunter, isn't the rough and ready macho man that so many hero's end up being. In short, they aren't caricatures. They feel like living, breathing people.

Graham also manages to throw a new twist on vampire lore that works beautifully. They're still harmed by holy water but Graham has a few new twists up her sleeve. I love when an author take a paranormal element that's already been done to death and makes it his or her own. Graham excels in the paranormal and it never comes off feeling hokey or fake. You will honestly believe, even if for an instant, that vampires exist.

In short, I loved this book. I was hooked from the first page and couldn't stop reading. It's the perfect cure for a case of the blues or to make your summer night red hot. It has something to please everyone: suspense, romance, thrills, and paranormal elements. Graham manages to be deft at juggling all her balls and never drops a single one.

If you haven't fallen under Graham's spell yet, what are you waiting for? Blood Red is an absolute flat out fantastic book and you'll love every bloody moment of it.

A paranormal romantic suspense, Graham dives right into the story here with Gen Wallace encountering the body of a floating woman underwater at her newest scuba diving job. When she surfaces in a panic, the rest of her crew searches for evidence of a body, but no one can find anything. Her new co-worker, Thor, a salvage worker, doubts her ability to be a responsible dive partner and worker, but Gen's reputation precedes her and she is allowed to continue on the dive. When Thor and Gen overcome their differences and end up lovers, Thor begins to believe the unnatural events that Gen encounters as he experiences a few himself. When the body of a woman surfaces, Gen's story is given some credence until she denies that it is the same woman. When more bodies are discovered, and the divers discover reports of more missing women, Gen and Thor unearth the paranormal ties to Gen's ghost and the grisly discoveries, as well as a newfound passion for one another.

When diving for treasure literally, Genevieve Wallace comes face to face with a dead woman. When this dead woman tries to speak to her she is frightened and races for the surface. She reports what she saw but fellow divers find nothing. This terrifies Genevieve but she takes the teasing of her friends with good cheer. What she doesn't take with good cheer is the condescending attitude of Thor Thompson. He is working the dive site along with her team. He thinks she is crazy and a possible danger to work with. She sees things and her dead lady keeps popping up and no one sees her. But when a dead body washes up on shore...the mystery of what or rather who Gen saw underwater should have been solved. But it hasn't. The dead lady is not the same one Gen has seen and Thor finds himself spending more and more time with her and thinks there just might be something to the "ghost" that haunts her. Their close working relationship as dive buddies is forcing them to rely on the other and it's not long before passion begins to burn between them. Can they stay one step ahead of what is going on with their hearts in tack?

This was a great read. A skillfully woven tale that includes, ghost, suspense, and of course romance as only Ms. Graham can create! Think romance meets Pirates of the Caribbean and you can imagine how entertained you will be. Thor and Gen are great characters and you will be kept guess as to who the baddie is up until the very end. Ms. Graham has vividly brought to life the Key's and if you are looking for a way to escape for just a little bit...this is the ticket!

Melisande's father is killed by a treacherous enemy and she is forced to marry Conar,an Irish/viking prince to save her home and her people from an enemy. After the wedding she is sent to a convent to grow up as she is only 13.Years later Conar and Melisande meet again when her home is again being attacked. He rescues her again and they fight then she is abducted. At this point most of the remainder of the story is told in flashback. The hero was a pretty decent character but the heroine behaved like a spoilt brat throughout the story. She's 13 at the start of the story and continues to act 13 to the end of the story.Conar deserved someone who was woman enough to accept the fact that the best way to protect her people and her home was to marry him and accept it without all the fuss that she made.I lost track of the number of times she called him viking;he knows he's a viking we know he's a viking did she have to keep saying it? It was a good story but the heroine's childish attitude spoilt most of it for me. The scenes with Conar and his family going into battle were far more interesting than any scene with the heroine.Rhiannon and Eric(The Viking's woman)made appearances, also Erin and Olaf(Golden Surrender). They helped the story to get a 3 star rating. The story would have been alot better if the heroine didn't fight the hero all through the story.

I started reading this author on a recommendation. I bought two of her books, this one and the Viking's Woman. I can honestly say this one is WAY better than Viking's woman, but that's not saying much. I know it's a task trying to create a realistic hero, who's structured properly for the period of the novel while exhibiting romantic and loving traits, but that's the gift of a creative writer. Graham seems to be lacking in this creativity. Is it too much to ask that a ROMANCE novel contain at least a smidgen of romantic build up. I do not constitute sex with romance, they're two entirely different animals. Injecting sex in a story does not make it a romantic story, nor does the hero throwing around declaration of possession over his wife constitute romance. "You're Mine...I'll never give you up...You belong to me," because of the period, I can accept these statements as loving, if they're mixed in with a healthy understanding of the character's dynamics. Graham does not utilize a writer's ability to build a personality for her characters to create a caring or bond with the reader.

The heroine was a yawn inducing bore. Her immaturity was understandable in the beginning because of her age, but it remained through out the story to the last page. Fear ruled Melisande during her initial meeting with Conar. But after that encounter, I lost the motivation for her behavior towards him. I did enjoy the interaction between Conar and his parents. The love, loyalty and genuine affection between Conar, his parents and his numerous siblings was more interesting than the lack luster relationship between him and his *destiny* with the hellion. I can honestly say he tried to bend and show affection towards Melisande, which is the reason I gave this book three stars.

THIS BOOK IS WONDERFUL!!!First off,I'm a little partial because I absolutely LOVE Viking Romances! In Lord of the Wolves, Heather Graham weaves an intricate tale of love, suspense, trust, and passion. Her characters, Melisande and Conar, are both strong-willed and sensual at the same time.I would love to tell you my favorite parts of the book (which is practically all of it!) but,I don't want to spoil it for anyone! Because of Graham's incredible plot, vivid detail and amazing characters, I COULD NOT put this book down! I STRONGLY advise anyone who is looking for a GREAT read and amazing story buy Lord of the Wolves. This novel is STILL and will always remain one of my absoutle FAVORITES! If you do buy it, I hope you enjoy it and have as much fun as I did reading it!

This is a great continuation of the first book, The Dead Room. I would recommend reading them back to back. Both books were hard to put down. Keep writing these kind of books Ms. Graham!!!!!!!! Love them.

Finally....a Good One!

Ok, I read the Seance...zzz. Then the Dead Room...not bad. But this one really had me going. I was actually on end. It's a good read, will keep you entertained if not a bit spooked. You'll never guess who the killer is. It actually had me agog and left me going...NO WAY!

Overall, I recommend it. But you will have to read the Dead Room first. It toggles back and forth to it. Also, I totally enjoyed the story being introduced by a, shall we say, an otherwordly but familiar voice? Pick it up..it's good.

I like most of her books, this one was OK but not one of her best. I would recommend it to her old readers but if you are a new reader I would suggest you read some of her earlier works first. Tall, Dark, and Deadly and the Dead on the Dance Floor, Killing Kelly, those were all great.

This book continues the story of some of the characters in THE DEAD ROOM. While this story can stand alone, it's probably better if you read the previous book first.

P.I. Joe Connolly could use a change. The events of THE DEAD ROOM have left him with nothing but sadness. And now it may have opened the door to the dead. On the way to a charity event he witnesses an accident and stops to help--saving a young girl hidden in the back seat at the urging of a dead man. So naturally he skips the event and goes out to get drunk. Genevieve O'Brien, who was rescued from a harrowing kidnapping by a serial killer, hires Connolly to look into the murder of an Edgar Allen Poe society board member. Her mother is also a member and she's worried that others may be threatened. Genevieve, too, is haunted... not so much by the past, although everyone is extremely over-protective of her, but by similar ghosts that haunt Joe... And by new ones as the Poe Killings continue...

The main and supporting characters are totally sympathetic. Old friends from Harrison Investigations also make some nice cameos. There's some great information about Edgar Allen Poe's time in New York (and in Baltimore). The mystery is a pretty good one. I didn't see the solution until it was revealed. The only slight quibble I had was that some of the characters seemed to keep putting themselves at risk--going out alone into dark parking garages, for instance. But otherwise they weren't being unbearably stupid about it. I thought this was a good, solid, interesting read.

Still not fully healed from her near death experience social worker Genevieve O'Brien struggles to move on with her life though she still suffers nightmares from the killer's assaults. However, her efforts stall when Ravens literary society president Thorne Bigelow is murdered. That is followed by a second member almost dying in a car accident. Being fans of Poe, the other Ravens connect the two ugly incidents as not being coincidence. They, especially Genevieve's mom, wonders if a killer dubbed the Poe Killings, is targeting their reading club.

Worried about her mother, Genevieve asks her friend, private investigator Joe Connolly to make inquires. After some minor investigating with the advice of some ghosts, Joe tells Genevieve he agrees with the Ravens that a killer is stalking the book group.

Joe is a fascinating protagonist who talks to ghosts while Genevieve is a courageous individual who had her own near death experience, but will not back down from the Poe Killer investigation. Together they are an awesome sleuthing team as each begins to understand the true meaning of the Tell-Tale Heart. The investigation is fun to follow as his late cousin and is cuz's beloved help from the beyond (his Brooklyn apartment seems a bit over crowded and if the landlord learns of his ghostly borders will demand more rent). Paranormal romantic suspense fans will appreciate the lead couple's investigation into the Poe Killings.

I've read several of Graham's books, Devil's Mistress is definitely a good book. If you're the type of person who skims the books for the steamy passionate scenes, this book is not for you. The plot, though slightly predictable, is well worth reading the book through, and the end is definitely rewarding and odd, because you always think of your heroine's living forever in your mind, at least I do. Devil's Mistress is an awesome book, I also recommend A Pirate's Pleasure, also by Ms. Graham, and would strongly suggest that people not invest the money in Savage Sweet Eden.

This is the 1st pirate book I've read, and I thought it was very
good. I found some things a little too convenient, such as
ailing spouses, but aside from that, I really liked the book &
did not want it to end. It did have a happy ending, and I
didn't sob like a baby when it was finished, like I thought I
might.

How non-formula of you, Ms. Graham!

Devil's Mistress is unlike any Historical Romance I have read in that it does not follow the standard formula for this type of novel. The book begins with a Prologue that lends an eeriness that makes the reader eager to get into the guts of the book. The book begins with a witch burning, a witch hunt and the hero and heroine meeting. Then the hero turns out to be married. Then the heroine gets married to someone else. This is what I mean about the book not following standard formula. You have to continue reading to see if and how the two could possibly get back together. The writing allowed me to feel the hysteria that permeated Salem in the late 1600s as the witch hunts began. The love story is poignant and understandable.

For me, the unusual way in which this book was presented makes it one of Ms. Graham's finest.

I have read better books by Heather Graham. The book was a bit drawn out could have been cut down by at least three chapters. The heroin pretty much worked my nerves. At times she was very naive. The book also became a little boring halfway through but all in all it was okay. I do suggest reading "A Pirates Pleasure" a very good book.

I REALLY enjoyed this book. The plot centers around the witch trials both of England and Salem. The heroine (unfortunately) falls victim to both and must be saved by the hero, Sloan, twice. The book gets off to a quick and exciting start-the first hundred-fifty pages are fabulous. The protagonists (whose names I don't remember) get together, have a few near misses with death, then hit it off nicely. Unfortunately, it slumps a bit after that with a very, very lengthy discription of their enforced separation. The action and romance both pick up again in the end, so I guess all's well that ends well.

All told, this book provided me with several extremly diverting hours, so, if that is all you are looking for, I suggest you read it as well.
