This book constantly reminded me of "Gone with the Wind" only this one had great love scenes. I found myself skipping through the boring dialog just to get to the steamy romps in the hay.
Other than that, I would prefer to rent "Gone With The Wind" instead of reading this book again.

Great Follow-up

This was a great follow-up to One Wore Blue and One Wore Gray. Christa proves that she is every bit as smart, strong and determined as Daniel and Jesse. She shows a great strength in moving to the west and holds her head high with her courage and will to survive no matter the odds. Of course Jeremy shows a great deal of strength himself in dealing with Christa's headstrong attitude. Excellent book and of course great historical references as always.

Nobody does it better than Heather

Unlike other authors who attempt to write about our nation's darkest hour - the War Between the States - Heather Graham really knows the period, and her careful research is evident. She wraps up her trilogy in fine style with this third volume of the Cameron family saga with the tale of the younger sister, Christa.

Brothers Jesse, who fought for the Union ("One Wore Blue") and Daniel, who fought for the Confederacy ("One Wore Gray") are happy that the war's over and they can build a future with their wives, but what is left for Christa, who lost her fiance at Cold Harbor? Jeremy MacCauley, brother to Daniel's wife Callie, has also left his heart in the smoldering ashes of the war. In a desperate effort to save the Cameron estate from a carpetbagger, Jeremy and Christa throw themselves in a marriage of convenience....and ride off together for an adventure in the west that just might include the love of a lifetime!

With a great story, sensuous romance, and sympathetic characters, this is one not to miss.

I hated to see it end!

The war is over. Brothers, Jesse and Daniel have returned home to Cameron Hall to join their wives, children, and their only sister Christa who has kept the house standing while they fought in the war on opposite sides. She was to have wed during the war herself but her love didn't show up. She later learn he died on the battle field. Now the yankees are wanting to burn Cameron Hall down while Jesse, Daniel and their families are gone away, taking care of business, with Christa left. It is going to take a signature from a Cameron relative who is a Union supporter to save the home, and there is only 24 hrs to do it. Christa is a die-hard rebel and hates all yankees, excluding her brother Jesse. And there is only one solution as far as Christa is concerned- marry Union Colonel Jeremy McCautley, who just arrived to tell his sister Callie (Daniel's wife, Christa's sister-in-law) good-bye before he heads out west for duty. Marry and then get an annulment, that's Christa's solution. But Jeremy has other plans. Furious that Christa can make vows and then throw them away so easily, Jeremy decides to make her take them seriously. You should see the looks of everyone's faces when Jesse, Daniel, and wives come home to find Jeremy and Christa in bed together the day after their wedding (knowing how much they can't stand each other and NOT knowing nothing happened in bed). Christa is now married and finds herself packing to head out west to join her new husband, while leaving her beloved home behind. And she fights it all the way. HG does a great job of carrying all three books out from the beginning of the Civil War to the Restoration afterwards. I also appreciated her carrying the family members along so the reader really gets a sense of how their stories (Jesse, Kiernan, Daniel, and Callie) are going. The bond that the reader experiences with this family is great. I do highly recommend that the reader begin with ONE WORE BLUE and then AND ONE WORE GRAY to get the complete picture- but each book is good about bringing the reader up on what has taken place, without boring those that have read them in sequence. Well, I hated to see it end. But I have purchased them and plan on reading them again in the future, they are just that WONDERFUL!!!

I read this first, though it's the second in the series (One Wore Blue is the first), however I found that I was not lost for having done so. The stories are separate enough that you don't have to follow the order. This was my first Heather Graham book, and I am now a fan. The book really absorbed me and I just had to make time in my busy day to read a few pages here and there, whenever I could. I was hooked.
I needn't tell you the storyline since it's posted everywhere. You won't be disappointed with this story.

I loved "One Wore Blue" so much and my hopes were high for the story of Jesse's brother, Daniel Cameron. This book grabbed me from the very first pages. The story of the Confederate soldier in love with the Yankee lady may seem to be cliche, but Heather Graham does it with such emotion, such passion, such depth that it seems like a brand new story. As with the story of Jesse and Kiernan, Daniel and Callie's story is rife with emotional turmoil. The characters are easy to fall in love with and you find yourself aching for them to find their way to each other. I get quite frustrated with the stories that have the hero and heroine endlessly fighting and bickering, but with Heather Graham (especially this particular trilogy), the tension is always deeper than selfishness, or the lead characters merely being irritated by each other. When Callie goes running after Daniel right before he is captured, you hold your breath wanting desperately for them to be able to avoid the pain you see coming. When Daniel thinks that Callie has betrayed him, your heart breaks knowing what a horrible misunderstanding has occurred and you are right there with them in the midst of their pain and longing for each other.

This book not only lived up to my high expectations, it surpassed them. This is a MUST READ, as is its predecessor.

Confederate Spy in Florida, Rebel, July 17, 2006
Reviewer: Betty Burks (Knoxville, TN) - See all my reviews

In the swamps of South Florida, Panther captured the Moccasin, a slivery Rebel spy. Florida was a slave state in 1862 and most of the planters depended on slave labor. They felt that the Confederacy had the God-given right to independence, just as the thirteen Colonies had managed to win and prove their right to rebel against England. Now, the Rebs were the patriots just as their forefathers in New England, USA, were.

A battle of wills between the Union major McKenzie and the Confederate spy, Lanie McMann. He'd been ordered to capture the South's most notorious spy, not knowing he'd find a beautiful young woman dressed in men's clothes. By law, she would have been hanged; for Lanie, however, her captor became her lover, even married her before becoming her bitter enemy. The Civil War, as I once explained it to a native of Belize, was brother against brother in the South, and was not about slavery per se. It was Lincoln's assassination by Rebel sympathizers which brought the issue of slavery into the possible reasons for such a horrific internal war.

She proved to be the most exasperating human being he'd ever come in contact with: willing to fight when all hope of any purpose or victory was gone, and never ever willing to accept defeat in any way, shape, or form. Just as I was taunted by a mean person saying "You're wrong," "Wrong again" because he claimed to be a 'professional. I have news for him, a pro does not have to always prove he's right. With the captured spy and her manly Union captor, some dialogue: "You have been beaten" and "You are beaten, and the point here is t hat you must learn that you can be beated." "You should be horsewhipped," she declared -- and she was right. No man tells a Southern woman that she is inferior in any way. We fight for our rights. Some years ago, I told a local historian had I loved back them, I might have been hanged as a Confederate spy (Knox. was Union) and he agreed. In one of his recent history lessons, he describes the defeated Jeff Davis as a man of 63 with receding hair and a wispy goatee who visited this town in 1871 who was on his way via rail to Memphis. Davis described Grant's administration as wicked and the writer had him and one of his generals, Forrest, as leaders of the klan which was started by a group of Pulaski lawyers and judges. It was not a part of the Confederacy at all, formed to protect Southerners from the Northern Carpetbaggers during reconstruction. We still need their protection, as a director of the Carpetbagger Theater hoodwinked $100,000 out of the City Council on false pretenses. We also need their protection from corrupt 'professionals.' "Her grief was real; the only way to find life again was to live," in any type of warfare. Other titles in this series about Florida's involvement in the Civil War include 'Captive' and 'Surrender.'

What a romance!!

This story takes place in the 1800's during the civil war. Callie finds an enemy soldier dying on her front lawn and can't bare to just leave him to die. She takes Daniel in and nurses him back to health. They fall in love very fast but Callie is forced to betray Daniel to save his life. He hates her for it and swears to return for her one day...for revenge. When they meet again will there firey romance rekindle or will hatred take over?

I LOVED this book! It is only the second romance I have read and I have to admit that I am an addict now! You can just feel Daniel and Callie's love for eachother! I have to say though, the war parts were boring to me. I found my self speed reading through the parts where Daniel was fighting in the war. I just wanted to get back to reading about him and Callie together. The book didn't grab my attention at first but I am so glad I stuck with it because it really does grab it eventually and leaves you not able to put it down! A must read if you enjoy reading about passionate romances.

#3 in the SLATER BROTHERS TRILOGY - JAMIE SLATER
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-23
Lieutenant Jamie Slater and Jon Red Feather are alerted to the smoke.
A small burned out wagon train. Dead cattle, dead bodies - looks like no survivors. Another Indian attack.

No survivors that is until he meets up with a hell-cat. Tess Stuart thinks he is one of the attackers. She sure means to defend herself.

After he subdues her, he finds out that she claims that the attackers were Von Heusen's men. Jon Red Feather informs Jamie the she is talking about Richard von Heusen, who calles himself a rancher. Von Heusen also wants the Stuart ranch.

They take her to the fort where she meets up with Dolly Simmons who is determined to accompany Tess to Wiltshire. Tess also meets Eliza Worthingham, Jamie's former lover, who is determined to have him, permanently.

Things heat up - when they get to the ranch in Wiltshire, von Heusen shows up and is backed down by Jamie and Jon. Well the hormones play a big factor in glueing the plot together which leads to some arguements [as usuall]. But she does sign over half of the ranch to Jamie, tieing up all her inheritance to prevent von Heusen from acquiring any of her property.

Yup! von Heusen's men are at it again as they abduct Tess and take her to the Comancheros who will in turn sell her to the Apache, Nalte. Nalte wants a blond, white woman for his bride.

It is a tale to be unfolded - but Jamie rescues Tess and makes friends with the Apache, Nalte and boy, what a show down when his brothers, Cole and Malachi show up with their wives and children to face down von Heusen and his gunslingers.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED --M -- a great trilogy if you can get through all the emotionally mixed-up hormones and the aftermath.

This book and the two sequels that follow it are typical Heather Graham, which is good news to those of us who enjoy her writing.
In addition to the personal stories in each book, the American history in which the characters are involved is handled very well. Graham can see the several sides of the history at the time her characters live - during and after the Civil War.
She is one of the better historical romance writers.

A really good book!!

This is the last book in the trilogy of the Slater brothers and I have to admit it that it's one of my favorites of Heather Graham's. Tess Stuart is beautiful, strong-willed and knows what she wants and it's Jamie Slater. Jamie Slater is really a great hero, he's sexy, a litte bit arrogant but tender at the same time. Dark Stranger (the first in the trilogy)with Cole and Kristin is another favorite of mine, so i recommend that one too.

The sequel to Rides A Hero - the story continues. Though the Civil War is over Jamie has continued a lieutenant on the frontier of Texas protecting settlers during Indian raids. His 2 older brothers settled down but Jamie never found the one he couldn't live without so he's still single. While traveling with her rich uncle Tess Stuart's wagon train is raided and her uncle is murdered. It is left to look like an indian massacre but Tess knows better. The man who owns the town has been harrassing the Stuarts for a while now to sell out their ranch to him but they have refused. Now Tess is left to advenge her homeland herself. But she can't do it by herself. What better person to help her than one of the Slater Brothers who are know to be able to handle a gun. Tess's spirited personality captures Jamie's heart and the battle is on. The reader even "sees" Cole and Malachi show up with their families to help Jamie out. So it's good seeing the family come together once more. Kristin and Shannon still prove to be spirited themselves. It's a lot of fun reading-one I think you will enjoy.

I love this book!!! I really enjoy historical romances and this one is set during the Revolutionary War. You can really feel for the characters as they are in conflict over their beliefs.
This is my favorite book from Heather Graham and one of my all-time favorites. It is the last of the North American Woman trilogy so be sure to check out Sweet Savage Eden (number 1) and A Pirate's Pleasure (number 2). If you want to continue to follow the Cameron legacy, check out Graham's Civil War trilogy: One Wore Blue, And One Wore Gray, And One Rode West. Not to be confused with her Florida based Civil War series starring the MacKenzie family.

They called her "Highness". Ravishing Lady Amanda Sterling, forced to spy on Lord Eric Cameron by the lord governor of Virginia and her evil, ambitious father! She'd detested Eric Cameron on sight. He was a traitor to King and country. Yet she'd been sent to steal his heart, his soul, and his secret plans for the revolution. And now she was his wife, swept into marriage with a man who would sear her with the hellfire of his desire, and make her his prisoner of love. Lord Eric Cameron turned his back on his family's estates in England to embrace the patriot's cause. He did it quietly-before the fateful shots at Lexington and Concord rang out and his true allegiance became clear by cannon and by sword. But Eric also fought another war-with the glorious Amanda Sterling, the beauty he had married, knowing he could never trust her...but never let her go. Amanda, the woman he had vowed to conquer, the spy he would never surrender, even at the risk of his own life. Loved it. The whole North American Woman series was wonderful.

I like how Heather Graham presents the conflict between two sides, be they army and indian or English loyalist and patriot she allows you to sympathize with both sides. It's not about who is collectively right or wrong but the conviction, passion and integrity of the individual characters. I enjoy the historical accuracy and, of course, the romantic plot. Mandy is zealous about her beliefs as is eric toward the opposition which makes for a political, marital nightmare! I do like the characters here. Amanda is sassy and defensive. But we can forgive her since she has a wicked, abusive father who fills her with rejection and low self esteem. Her ideals may be flawed but at least she is passionate about them. I really sympathized with her dilemma (black mailed by her father for her cousins life) but was frustrated that she would not confide in her husband. Amanda does; however, mature greatly throughout the book. I loved Eric. He is dignified yet indignant, righteously, of course. It is sad that he can't trust his wife but you can't blame him, he struggles painfully between loyalty to his cause and loyalty to his wife. He manages to stay devoted to both. It is very climactic and has a couple of great twists in it.

This book contains three (not two) enchanting tales of romantic suspense that are just perfect for light summer reading.

In the first entry by Heather Graham, Kit Delaney returns to the home she was born in and the family she is estranged from after the untimely death of her beloved father. There she begins a relationship with David Moore an enigmatic member of the household whose purposes are not entirely clear to her. She also engenders the enmity of at least one of her relatives -all of whom are afraid she will cheat them out of their rightful inheritance. The question is how far they will go to get Kit out of the picture and wether David can or will come to her rescue.

In "Shelter Island" the second tale, by Carla Neggers, Dr.Antonia Winter believes she is being stalked. She is afraid to ask for help because of the repercussions that a false alarm might have on her medical career and on the political aspirations of her new suitor, Hank Callahan. When she secretly retreats to an old cottage, belonging to a friend, on Shelter Island she is followed by Hank and by her stalker. Who will get to her first?

The last story, bySharon Sala, "Capsized",is myfavorite. Kelly Sloan is a DEA agent in an undercover operation that goes sour when a released prisoner whom she put away recognizes her. After three days of torture she manages to escape and swim to shore in Texas where she is rescued by Quinn McCord, a Texas Ranger with problems of his own. Together they must outwit the drug kingpin who has offered a two million dollar reward for Kelly's murder, in time for Kelly to testify against Dominic Ortega. The sparks fly in this tale of love and revenge.

These three tales are a good value for light, fun summer reading.

3 enjoyable stories.

"Bougainvillea" by Heather Graham. Almost two decades ago her mother drowned. Her father never explained why, but he left their Bougainvillea home and never returned. With his recent death, his daughter Katherine "Kit" Delaney goes back to the family home. There she meets David Moore, a friend from her childhood. As they fall in love, Kit's tragic past catches up to her present fueled further by her doubts about whose side her beloved is on.

"Shelter Island" by Carla Neggers. Dr. Antonia Winter feels someone is stalking her. Not wanting to hurt her boyfriend's run for the senate with unsubstantiated stories, Antonia decides to leave for Shelter Island for awhile. However, Hank Callahan would rather not be a politician if he must give up his beloved Antonia. With a hurricane coming and a stalker following Antonia, Hank has his work cut out for him if he wants to keep her safe.

"Capsized" by Sharon Sala. In Mexico, DEA Agent Kelly Sloan realizes her cover is blown, which means she needs to escape before Ortega disposes of her in his malevolent manner. She manages to get to the sea, but drifts for three days before being found by Texas Ranger Quinn McCord. As she recovers her strength she and her male nurse fall in love, but Ortega and his in-law Gruber need her dead.

All three tales are taut romantic suspense thrillers that will please sub-genre fans except for the fact that readers will know each one could have been a stand-alone full-length novel.

This was a good read.. Kind of funny because it takes place in the 80s I did have to laugh at the changes in technology and society since then.. BUT the story did grab me, I couldn't put it down and finished in the same day (don't tell my boss.) As a mother some of it made me tear up, but I guess that's the sign of a good one. And the story was good, I could discuss with my husband without feeling like a goober. (Romance novels are my guilty pleasure, I'll admit.)

Once again Heather Graham didn't dissappoint this reader. Queen of Hearts is not only a wonderful love story but has plenty of suspense. I liked the way the book grabbed me in the first chapter and never let up. The story takes place on a luxury yacht and it enhances the romantic setting. Rhiannan has been tragically hurt in the past and Kiel is the perfect man to bring healing. The story becomes very suspenseful in the middle and I found myself biting my nails. I highly recommend this book!

#2 of the SLATER BROTHERS TRILOGY -

Review Date: 2007-08-22
I have to laugh at the attitudes of these two - Malachi Slater and Shannon McCahy.
It took them a long time to realize that it was them fighting their hormones instead of true hate of one another. They both felt the attraction from the start. But, of course, Shannon had to mouth off at almost every encounter. She was very nieve about the attraction and Malachi was only used to sex without love.

Cole had taken off when Malachi shows up at the ranch but Shannon doesn't know at first that it is him and not some maurader.
Then the ranch was invaded by a group of men from Kansas who grabbed Kristin. And, of course, Shannon blows up and wants to charge the 20 some men who have her sister. Malachi starts by having to save her from her own foolish actions. She could have gotten him killed.

Shannon is bound and determined to follow Malachi in the rescue of her sister. Yeah! right! Way out on the trail she once again gets caught and leads Malachi in the opposite direction where Justin Waller lays claim to her. He is determined to have her any way it takes. The more brutul the beter.

Captain Malachi Slater rescues her [again] and of course it leads to seduction [or sex if you will] and finally they make it to the town of Haywood.
Where Malachi meets up with Iris Andre, a former lover, who offers to get word of Kristin for Malachi. Of course, Shannon is up to her old tricks, of mouthing off before she even knows what is going on.

Mr. and Mrs Haywood, practically own most of this town and they decide, from what they could see, that Malachi and Shannon should get married.
Oh boy, more trouble. A saloon girl gets murdered. One thing leads to another and suddenly Shannon gets abducted [again] in her nightgown.

Malachi gets sidetracked again. Dumb female!
Matthew shows up and so does Jamie. They all converge on Fitz's town and plan to hold up a train. Well, she does it again, Shannon and Iris get caught for Fitz when Bear recognizes Shannon. Fitz is determined to kill Cole and his brothers then the women.

See what the train hold-up leads to - and how the Slater families get together, leaving Iris and Matthew back at the ranch. And the Slaters heading for Texas.
Great plot - dumb, emotional female - libertine men - and nasty villians.
Excellent read.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -- M -- moral attitudes out the window.

The sequel to Dark Stranger - the story continues. Shannon McCahy (a yankee supporter) and Malachi Slater (a rebel soldier) pull together to look for Shannon's sister Kristin Slater, Malachi's sister-in-law, who has been kidnapped in hopes to draw her husband cole Slater out. The Civil War is over but the Slater brothers have been put on the Wanted List as murderers due to Cole Slater gunning down the man bushwacker that murdered his first wife and left Cole for dead. In Dark Stranger (the story of Kristin McCahy and Cole Slater) Shannon and Malachi couldn't be in the same room together without breaking into arguments- they hated each other that much or so it seemed. How are they going to be able to cooperate and work together to find Kristin and get word to Cole to stay put? They say the line between Love and Hate is very thin. Malachi spends as much or more time getting Shannon out of trouble because of her loud mouth and hot-temper. But when there's a threat of losing Shannon to bushwhackers Malachi realizes that he has crossed over from hate to love. All 3 brothers come together to save Kristin. It is great seeing them all together again. The characters are all powerful. It's a good read!

The first thing that caught my attention about this book was the title. I thought it was a very catchy title standing out among all the other books on the shelf. I haven't read too many books that take place during or after the Civil War, but I was really impressed with this book. The characters were wonderful and fit well together, although I thought Shannon was a bit too agressive when facing enemies. And aside from Malachi having to rescue her over and over again and giving the reader the feeling that you were reading the same thing over again, it was an entertaining book. I read it in one day. It's definitely worth reading if you're a romance buff.

As the sequel to "Dark Stranger," I eagerly picked up this book. In my opinion, it was much better than the first. The heroine, Shannon, acted accordingly in response to events from the first book, including the horrible death of her fiance by bushwhackers. She had alot to overcome to believe in love again. Between the two books, you see her growth into a woman. Malachi, the hero, was just that in my mind--a hero. Although he was stuck into a situation by Shannon's doing, he still protected her always.

I am usually not a reader of these types of books, but I found an old copy of it when I was riding the bus and couldnt put it down. I must have done the bus circut two or three times before I realized I was so engrossed that I missed my stop. Thre reading continued until I got home and finally fell asleep with my sleepy head resting right on "The End." Read this book with the doors locked and a box of kleenex at hand. You'll value your privacy because this book captured the wild horses of my emotion.

Welcom sequel to THE DEAD ROOM

This book continues the story of some of the characters in THE DEAD ROOM. While this story can stand alone, it's probably better if you read the previous book first.

P.I. Joe Connolly could use a change. The events of THE DEAD ROOM have left him with nothing but sadness. And now it may have opened the door to the dead. On the way to a charity event he witnesses an accident and stops to help--saving a young girl hidden in the back seat at the urging of a dead man. So naturally he skips the event and goes out to get drunk. Genevieve O'Brien, who was rescued from a harrowing kidnapping by a serial killer, hires Connolly to look into the murder of an Edgar Allen Poe society board member. Her mother is also a member and she's worried that others may be threatened. Genevieve, too, is haunted... not so much by the past, although everyone is extremely over-protective of her, but by similar ghosts that haunt Joe... And by new ones as the Poe Killings continue...

The main and supporting characters are totally sympathetic. Old friends from Harrison Investigations also make some nice cameos. There's some great information about Edgar Allen Poe's time in New York (and in Baltimore). The mystery is a pretty good one. I didn't see the solution until it was revealed. The only slight quibble I had was that some of the characters seemed to keep putting themselves at risk--going out alone into dark parking garages, for instance. But otherwise they weren't being unbearably stupid about it. I thought this was a good, solid, interesting read.

Still not fully healed from her near death experience social worker Genevieve O'Brien struggles to move on with her life though she still suffers nightmares from the killer's assaults. However, her efforts stall when Ravens literary society president Thorne Bigelow is murdered. That is followed by a second member almost dying in a car accident. Being fans of Poe, the other Ravens connect the two ugly incidents as not being coincidence. They, especially Genevieve's mom, wonders if a killer dubbed the Poe Killings, is targeting their reading club.

Worried about her mother, Genevieve asks her friend, private investigator Joe Connolly to make inquires. After some minor investigating with the advice of some ghosts, Joe tells Genevieve he agrees with the Ravens that a killer is stalking the book group.

Joe is a fascinating protagonist who talks to ghosts while Genevieve is a courageous individual who had her own near death experience, but will not back down from the Poe Killer investigation. Together they are an awesome sleuthing team as each begins to understand the true meaning of the Tell-Tale Heart. The investigation is fun to follow as his late cousin and is cuz's beloved help from the beyond (his Brooklyn apartment seems a bit over crowded and if the landlord learns of his ghostly borders will demand more rent). Paranormal romantic suspense fans will appreciate the lead couple's investigation into the Poe Killings.
