The Relationship of Space Weather and Telecommunications
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-17
Review Date: 2005-05-17
Divided equally between Space Weather and Telecommunications, the author presents a non-mathematical view of the solar-terrestrial
environment known as space weather and how it impacts radio communications of various types. This relationship is examined
essentially for predicting and forecasting variability in communication outcomes. Emphasis throughout is on interpreting
the numerous published scientific studies to better understand this impact.
The author writes chronologically and often describes his professional experiences as if recording a scientific journal or diary. Thus it is easy to follow the complex threads of physical science inquiry as he travels from meeting to meeting where other scientists also present their findings. One need not be a mathematician to interpret the meaning of a few dozen equations. A Bachelor's degree in Physics, a related science, or engineering will suffice to comprehend fully the concepts.
In the first part, attention is given to the Sun, the Magnetosphere and Geomagnetic storms, and the Ionosphere. There is an excellent summary of recent work in modeling and prediction and the author makes a point that "...we are now unfortunately faced with the job of predicting outcomes from models driven by parameters that also need to be predicted..." and continues on to address the uncertainty in this process. Readers engaged in the space weather field will find an excellent overview of the topic, which includes storm and ionospheric modeling, but few surprises. Attention is given to ionospheric layers, sporadic-E, solar flares, European Union COST Action models, and scintillation models. A significant feature of the first part is that the names and organizations of researchers are cited. This allows the reader to reach into the literature for additional technical details of this research most of which is recent or current.
The second part is devoted to studying propagation in the bands from ELF (<3 kHz) through EHF (30-300 GHz) which is essentially the entire real-world telecommunications spectrum. The growth in technology, including the extensive use of Global Positioning (GPS), suggests that this part has many innovations, particularly in the HF spectrum, in which the author makes the connection to space weather. Such well-known topics as waveguide, wave-hop, skywave, groundwave, skip and skip distance, ducting, scatter, OTH radar, MUF and LUF, scintillation in earth-space, Doppler shift, Faraday rotation, and absorption are examined. Attention is given to modeling of the scintillation channel along with mitigation schemes.
There are discussions of HF system performance models including: IONCAP, VOACAP, ICEPAC, ASAPS, and REC533. Because satellite communications is expanding, the author explores refraction, path delay errors, radiowave trajectory, phase and group path variation, Doppler shift, Faraday rotation, dispersion, Total Electron Content (TEC), diurnal variation of scintillation, and the global morphology of scintillation.
In the section entitled, "Space Weather Support for Systems," the focus shifts to military Command, Control, Communications, and Intelligence (C3I) requirements. Attention is given to such significant systems as: GLOBALink/HF, HFDL, FAA WAAS, and the benefits of space weather information. Considerable space is devoted to forecasting and prediction services and systems including NOAA, RWC Canada, RWC Australia, JPL, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory at Oxfordshire, England, RWC Warsaw & IDCE, RWC Brussels & SIDC, and military systems such as the Air Force Weather Agency at Scott AFB. Commercial services as NWRA, RPSI, and STD-Canada are also described.
Considerable space is devoted to research activities including the National Space Weather Program, Military Space Weather Involvement, and the international involvement of COST Actions, the European Space Agency, Sweden, France, Japan, Canada, and Australia. Also discussed is the work of URSI, COSPAR, SCOSTEP, ITU-R, NCEP, and CSWIG. Finally, the activities of CEDAR, GEM, SHINE, CISM, and CAWSES are outlined. Sufficient information is provided to give the reader a good understanding of each project without exhaustive explanations of the technical details.
The Epilogue consists mainly of a lengthy dialog between Dr.Ernest Hildner, Director of the NOAA Space Environment Center at Boulder, CO, and Dr. Goodman (author) worthy of analysis. It closes with an 11-page list of acronyms which is very valuable in cutting through the terminology fog.
The volume includes a number of reference lists which identify the most recent studies supported by many tables and figures which illustrate the text.
The author has drawn heavily on his more than three decades of research (1960-1991) at the Naval Research Laboratory in Anacostia for this volume. The reviewer was stationed at NRL during 1945 and is aware of the significance of the experiments conducted there during its long history.
Dr. Goodman has produced a book which is readable and presents a comprehensive up-to-date overview of the relationship of space weather and the telecommunications field. Written primarily for physical science specialists and engineers it also will be useful to licensed amateur radio operators engaged in voice, CW, and data communications who must deal with the practical impact of propagation every time they are on the air.

One of the most base concepts of art - symmetry. "The Symmetries of Things" is a guide to this most basic concept showing
that even the most basic of things can be beautiful - and addresses why the simplest of patterns mesmerize humankind and the
psychological and mathematical importance of symmetry in one's every day life. "The Symmetries of Things" is an intriguing
book from first page to last, highly recommended to the many collections that should welcome it.

Jimmy Glenn, former owner and trainer of the Times Square Gym is one of the unsung heroes in the boxing game. He has trained
the best and seen the toughest boxers ever to set foot in the ring. This book is a true homage to a holdout establishment
that finally succumbed to the wrecking ball in the wake of NY's Disneyization. The pictures in this book capture the look,
feel and smell of what it was like to enter the rarely travelled circle of the serious boxer looking to make it to the big
time.

If you've ever considered buying a saltwater fishtank - this is " THE BOOK " to read first. It covers all the basics you
need for a Saltwater Fish tank with Live Rock and Fish.
This book gives a complete soup to nuts blueprint of the basics needed - equiptment needed - and even an option to get started on a smaller scale if need be - although the ideal minimum size would be a 40 gallon for Saltwater Tank - there is a blueprint for a 15 or 20 gallon tank - along with suggestions to get started on a restricted budget.
This book is a great reference book - but doesn't attempt to cover more advanced topics such as corals / refugium tanks ( I wish this would have been included ). I'd highly recommend this book as a first read compared to the other 4 books I've read. After reading this book - I'd suggest joining an online community like Reef Central or one of many other online saltwater forums. These sites can fill in the gaps for any questions taht may arise while getting started - or more advanced issues you may experience while upkeeping your tank.

If you're a Steve Goodman fan, you'll want to own this book. If you're not a Steve Goodman fan, you probably haven't been
properly introduced!
The format is perfect, though the book looks imposing until you actually open it.
I love all the photos! I love getting to know a man I always admired and never had the opportunity meet. In reading Eals' engaging and detailed work, I am constantly surprised by the breadth of Steve's influence and the number of talented people who considered him their friend.
If you're new to Steve and have some doubts, buy his anthology. No Big Surprise: Anthology
Once you've heard that, you'll be back here pressing the "Add to Cart" button.
Thanks, Steve! Well done, Clay!

Everything you wanted to know about Steve Goodman and then some. The author really did his homework....over 700 pages detailing
Steve's life. Peoples' recollections of events 40 years ago seem like they happened yesterday. I guess that was the effect
Steve had on people. A talented musician and song writer and even a better human being. It was fun reading about his interactions
with the famous musicians/entertainers of the time: John Prine, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, Jackson Browne, Arlo, Dylan, Kristofferson,
Carly Simon, the Chapin brothers, Pete Seeger, Bob Seger, Steve Martin, Tom Rush, Johnny Cash, et al. He packed a lifetime
into those 36 years. You left us to soon Steve.

Steve's music was great, but unfortunately he'll more than likely only be remembered for "City of New Orleans". The book is
good, but it was on the overkill side. Outside of his immediate family and close friends, I'm not too sure that the rest of
us are much interested in his day-to-day activities. I can think of a lot of great talent who never got a large-format, small
type, 700 page book so in that light, Steve's family has something to be proud of. All in all a great book, but very time
consuming to read.

I spent a few months reading various writings on health care systems and trying to clean up the trash heap that is all Wikipedia
articles on the topic. I thought I had a good grip on what was going on around the world. I was wrong.
Lives at Risk presents a crystal clear picture of the health care industry in the US, UK, and Canada. It exposes the economic and political factors that have caused decreasing performance and increasing costs in all three countries. Finally, Lives at Risk makes a recommendation for a way to do things better.
This book lays it all out in short, easy chapters supported by copious references for those who want to know more.

this is very interesting book providing a huge amount of useful data about different health systems in the world, although
the presentation is scattered, irregular and according to the Authors` design, more than to a planned and rational description.
Their interpretation of the data provided is not always acceptable. They use the old tactic of attributing something false
to the enemy to attack it. They create a "myth" about national health sysems whcih nobody ever stated or believed and they
used it to show the weakness of NHS. After completing the book I was even more convinced of the benefit of health systems
such as those existing in Europe and in canada compared to the US. Their critique by the Authors might indeed be useful
in spotting their limitations ( obody says they are perfect) and correcting them

Goodman and associates provide a valuable alternative look inside the single-payer, national, universal access health systems
of Europe and Canada. This book is long overdue.
I teach a college class in comparative health systems that contrasts the U.S. health system with those of other nations and I use this book as an alternative text. I warn students that it is a polemic; Goodman is on a mission. But since the great mass of academic texts are written by professors in love with Europe and in contempt of the U.S. failure to insure 43 million citizens, this book is a welcome splash of cold water in the face.
The problem is that neither Europe nor the U.S. have solved moral hazard. As long as government, or our tax-subsidized employer, is pre-paying our healthcare, and we can leave your wallet at home and demand all the tests and treatments we are allowed, we are in trouble. It is a big Las Vegas buffet and we are all high-rollers pigging out and over-eating because the tab is on the house.
The result will be disaster in Europe as the aging population increases its demands on a limited supply of younger workers. The disaster in the U.S., with Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid already on track to consume the entire federal budget, is well publicized.
Goodman solution is a revamped Health Savings Account (HSAs) that make each of us responsible.
Whether agree that HSAs are the answer, or prefer some other approach, read this book. Racing to establish universal entitlement is a recipe for univeral disaster.
