Superbit=god.

Well not really, but you get my point.

Does anyone else see the correlation between the letters of the title and DNA sequences? A friend pointed this out to me, I hadn't noticed before.

Love, love, LOVE this movie. Probably one of my top three. If you have half a brain, you should probably own it.

My favorite movie. Ever

This movie needs to be watch at least twice, in order to capture all the nuances of the detailed plot, the cinematography, and the superb acting. I never, ever get tired of watching this movie.

This movie is a post modern classic. Wonderfully filmed, with a great story. It is not science fiction, though it might sort of fit the genre. It is more along the lines of Farenheit 451, a Clock Work Orange, and 1984.

Great way to get discussion going in class

I bought this movie to show my class of lower level bio kids, generally kids who are checked out of school. Some of the details had to be reviewed that they didn't quite understand, but they understood the movie overall. Even better, the discussion we had after the movie was AMAZING. They really were able to relate the movie well to modern issues and many were able to uncover the layers of symbolism and imagery in the film. There were more than a few comments that caused me to respond "I hadn't even thought about that!" This was a much better vehicle for thinking about ethical issues realted to technology than any article I could have found. We are also relating parts of the movie to our new unit on genetics, something I hadn't even anticipated would happen. Overall, I would highly recommend this film for other bio teachers to use during their DNA units.

Not your standard Sci-fi

At first glance, it may look like any other film. But it truly is a sci-fi film and a brilliant one at that. People in the future can choose to have the perfect baby, without ailments and without defects. This is a story of one man, who wasn't so lucky. Ethan Hawke is broodingly perfect in this. His heartfelt performance really carries this film. Jude Law's small but heartbreaking role should not be missed either. Yes its sci-fi, but its so unconventional, you don't need to be a fan to watch this, or vice versa. Its dramatic and depressing and often beautiful too.

Intense But Disappointing Movie

This movie keeps the tension fairly high throughout, but the final half-hour gets unrealistically wacky. Although the very surprising ending is dramatic and then.. well, you may find it terriboy unsatisfying. But, I think the whole movie was overdone. I think the actors acted like they were on steroids, especially Jeff Bridges. At the end, you see why they had him acting so hyper, but still, it wasn't realistic. Also, there was more than a whiff of political B.S. -- as you might expect from any movie Tim Robbins is in -- particularly when it comes to painting the FBI as bad guys and the fanatics as right-wingers. This is one of those movies you'll forget about ten minutes after it ends.

Although I rented this movie a while back, I still rememeber most of
the "action". You see, there was once a song, and a line from that song
says, "paranoia strikes deep, into your life it will creep." Well, the
Jeff Bridges character (who teaches terrorism at the local college) starts
wondering about his neighbors. Tim Robbins just happens to be that neighbor. nuff said?
First half of movie drags, but it sets up the second half nicely.
Second half, keep an eye on your neighbor. But, the ending is what is
most dramatic of the whole effort. The ending is what keeps you thinking,
wondering, and instills in us a sense of paranoia that will keep
neighborhoods on their toes for a long time. If you trust your
neighbors, then it's a bad movie. But if there is the slightest doubt,
by all means, an excellent show.

An Unintentionally Good Film about the "Far-Right"
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-31
Everyone have seen "American History X", which "realistically" portrays what I imagine American screenwriters must think life is like for so-called "Extreme Right-wingers", but while that was a feast of Semitical Correctness gone wild, this particular film is actually quite good. The story centres around a college professor, Michael Faraday played by Jeff Bridges, teaching, among other things, a class on "domestic terrorism". Faraday has recently lost his FBI-wife in an incident involving one of the many "militia groups", but where the blame was squarely on the side of the FBI. Hence, he is a bitter man, bearing a grudge against the FBI, but trying to live his life as normal, for the sake of his lonely nine year old son.

After saving the life of the neighbours' son, (the Lang's) he befriends them, and within their family his isolated son finds a new friend in the Lang's son. Eventually, he grows suspicious of his neighbour (Oliver Lang played by Tim Robbins) and his past, and starts to suspect he is in fact a member of the "Far Right" and is plotting an attack on the Federal Government. But unlike most films from the hands of Hollywood, these "extremists" are actually portrayed as normal people with a just cause, not the drooling maniacs we're usually served in every second film, so to speak. As Faraday says himself in one of his classes, most people in American history of any note would today be labelled "terrorists", and would certainly have taken up arms a long time ago, if they were alive today.

Unlike the ending of American History X, which was completely defeatist and meaningless, this one actually ends well for the good people. Sometimes you wonder how a film such as this made it through censorship, but I guess they think we should feel all "horrified" at the idea of someone actually having faith in God, higher causes and wanting to change the future for something better. Well, they failed.

Recommended. 4 stars.

I'm getting more into the four author thing that has been going on lately. I really enjoyed the stories. It was one that I didn't really like, but the other three were great. I have to say that they draw a detailed view of Jamaica, that you wish you were there. This will be a good read for anybody.

I found all of the plots too obvious. There was no mystery to any of the stories and none of the plots had any imagination. I was very displeased with the complete novel.

To call these strung-together words stories or novellas is an insult to real stories and novellas everywhere. Although they ARE funny as hell for all the wrong reasons. Apparently, St. Martin's press has been giving back to the community by hiring illiterate editors, because they obviously couldn't read this mess, which is loaded with unnecessary words, idiotic and trite phrases and just plain incorrect English. But that's just the mechanics end.

As far as the stories, it's doubtful you'll ever encounter more lightweight, more ridiculous, more insignificant, more asinine and more unrealistic characters unless it's more writing by these four hacks. First off, of course, everyone is highly successful, or about to be, and have no major worries in life, especially where money is concerned. Yeah. THAT's believable. Second, judging by the endless, way-too-long descriptions, what people wear and how they look is apparently just as important, if not more so, as what kind of people they are inside. Yep. Nothing like a "true love" romance totally rooted in shallowness and materialism. Nice message to send. Alers can't tell us why Aimee is unable to sort our her "feelings," but makes sure we know each and every time what she's wearing and how she put it on (she "slipped" into something, or "quickly donned" something). And she has some bizarre need to inform us, three separate times, that Aimee has "groomed feet." (Think I'm kidding? Read this tripe.) Lucia wants to avoid men and really wants nothing to do with kids, yet she volunteers to take Karenna -- a total stranger -- to the bathroom. And David lets her take her only because she gave him her name. Like that makes her OK. Duh.... It's the kind of book you keep turning pages on because you can't believe it can get any more contrived or poorly written, yet it never disappoints.
Save yourself from this slop. Even though it only took me about 2 hours to read the whole book, I know I killed brain cells in the process....

Very bland, boring characters
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-07
All of the characters in all four stories are bland, one-dimensional, simple, and really just pathetic. (However, two of these short stories were just scanned.) The main characters do not seem to understand their own feelings and motives for anything they do.

Much of the writing is redundant, and therefore, unnecessary. Poor Ms. Aimee Fisher, on several pages, (paraphrased) "just can't understand the emotions she has for Leland."

In another story the characters are so unrealistic that it is ridiculous. John's mother, a sixty-something year old woman, needs Toni, the main character, to help her tell her son that "she wants to go home!" Ple-e-e-a-se!! There is no literary aplomb in any of these short stories. Well, I really just glanced through Ms. Mason's and Ms. King-Gamble's works because I was really too "afraid" to read them.

Enjoyable anthology

"From the Heart" by Rochelle Alers. Leland lives in an antebellum mansion on Georgia's St. Simons Island where he finds historic documents. Curator Aimee visits Leland to catalogue the discovery. They fall in love, but he lives on an ocean island while she resides in inland Atlanta, making a relationship seem impossible. Though the excuse seems feeble in this world of commuter marriages, fans will enjoy this well written contemporary.

"An Officer and A Hero" by Marcia King-Gamble. Reticent Kitt goes on a Caribbean cruise where she cannot compete with the women participating in the Miss Black Universe contest for the attention of cruise ship employer Jared. Still they fall in love, but several contestants want him too. This is an amusing fairy tale.

"Our Secret Affair" by Carmen Green. Though they work for the same company, Toni and John are competitors. Toni is the top salesperson while John is second. During the company's annual retreat, they fall in love, but they compete for a promotion that will lead to the lay off of the other. Though the premise of firing your top guns seems improbable when there are lesser talents available for downsizing, readers will like this dueling duo.

"Heart's Desire" by Felicia Mason. Single father David takes his three children on a Bahamas vacation where he meets Lucia. They are attracted to one another, but she played the role of stepmother once before and vowed never again. Though matchmaking children have become trite, the two adults make for a fine reading experience.

Some of the premises are weak, but the stories entertain and are fun to read so kick off your shoes and enjoy ISLAND BLISS.
