Dragon Rider is such a great book you can't wait to find out what happens next. This book takes place in a valley where dragons are trying to escape to the Rim of Heaven before the humans come. This story is so adventurous. It's just like cause and effect. The book also has a lot of great action. The author wrote this book with so much excitement you'll be on your toes. Every chapter it gets more interesting. I hope you enjoy this book like I did.

Dragon Rider tells about a boy named Ben, a dragon named Firedrake, and a
Brownie named Sorrel. This book tells about Ben, Sorrel, and Firedrake
going on their journey to the Rim of Heaven in the Himalayas. They pass by weird creatures, including: a sea serpent, a djinni, Nettlebrand who is a dragon eater, and Twigleg who is a homocules, a small type of creature that is about as tall as a pint. Throughout their voyage, Nettlebrand is trying to kill them. It tells about them defending themselves from Nettlebrand. Will they die, or will Nettlebrand?

I think Dragon Rider is a fantastic book because it has adventure in it. It has mystical creatures. It just has a good story-line. It tells about things that will make you jump out of your pants. It also has things that are funny, especially the things Sorrel says. I also like this book because my favorite genre is fantasy and Cornelia Funke is one of my favorite authors. The only thing I don't like to talk about is, there is a tragedy.

I recommend this for ages 8-10. The genre is fantasy.

Review Date: 2008-03-06
Dragon Rider is a good dragon book that doesn't delve too deeply into dragon lore, preferring to stand on it's own as more of an adventure tale involving dragons. The premise of the book is that the lair of a group of dragons is threatened and one of their own - Firedrake - is the only one willing and able to set out and explore the scary world to find a better place for his clan to live: a mysterious place called the Rim of Heaven.

Like many such books when the protagonist steps beyond the sheltered confines of his/her character-incubator world, they quickly learn just how hard real life is. In Dragon Rider this trauma is embodied in Nettlebrand, a compelling although not completely fleshed out mechanic dragon.

The cast of characters includes a young orphan named Ben, who becomes the namesake dragon rider, a homunculus named Twigleg that borders on Jar Jar Binks annoyingness, and a professor of fabulous beings, interested in Firedrake for obvious reasons.

This book is a fun read as long as you don't take it too seriously and the 400+ pages fly by as you get engrossed in the story.

Great Adventure for Dragon Lovers

This book is perfect for kids who are into the dragon fantasies but not ready for alot of the darkness and violence that is often prevelant in this particular genre. My kids (9, 7) loved the appearance of various mythological creatures and I appreciated the well rounded characters and quest of the book. Dragon Rider has the villan you love to hate, honorable heros, an outspoken and hillariously opinionated sidekick, and an aquaintance with questionable loyalties. It has a challenging vocabulary which my eldest word lover enjoyed but might make it a tough read for a struggling reader to pick up by his/herself. We overcame this by making it a family read aloud.

This book lacks the seriousness of Funke's Inkheart Series but still has the undercurrent of good vs. evil, characters growing as they decide and then act on right and wrong, and has a theme of doing good for the sake of good. The kids, even the younger ones, loved the humor and occasionally whimsical storyline. If Eragon and Lord of the Rings is your style, you will find this book childish but if you are looking for the fantastic creatures without some of the heavier content, you will find this book an enjoyable, worthwile read!!!

Just a comment to the idea that Dragon Rider was published after Eragon (and may be "inspired" by it) and that is too simple and boring, "don't pick it up if you are older than 9.".

All of you well read kids may want to check a listing or ask in a bookstore...Dragon Rider was published 1997, so if anything the author of Eragon may have read it and been inspired. Which is ok, dragon stories are as old as mankind.
Is it easier to read? Well, check the author's and publisher's recommendation, it is written for younger readers, younger than teens! Cornelia Funke has written books for small children, Elementary age and teens and young adults. The Thief Lord and Inkheart are for the older set. By her own account the Dragon Rider is for young readers. So dont complain, give it to second grader who will enjoy it.

I enjoyed this book more than the first. The majority of the story takes place inside the story of Inkspell. I could hardly stand to put the book down. It has a lot of action and adventure. It also has love, but not so much that it takes away from the story. Also, with the way it ended, I really can't wait for Inkdeath, although I will be sad to see the story end.

I purchased this book for my son, hoping he would become enchanted with it, since we both loved Inkheart. I'm sad to say my son has moved on, but I'm hooked! Cornelia Funke is a magnificent writer and Inkspell does not disappoint. First rate fantasy.

I bought this book because I've read Inkheart and when I heard there was a sequel I just had to buy it.
Inkspell is not as good as the first book. Yes, it has a lot of adventure, yes it has interesting characters and the way Cornelia describes things is amazing, but the book is too long and while I was reading it I felt that lots of things didn't need to be there, and 600 pages could easily have become 250 making this a greater book.
It took me 2 and a half months to finish it, I couldn't read more than 2 chapters a day and it looked like I had more remaining pages everyday!
I love the idea of the book, about people reading other people in and out a story and adventures, fights, etc but it was so long and it became boring sometimes...

Great Book! Must read for Action/Adventure/Fantasy lovers!

Wonderful Book. It is a sequel so you must read "Inkheart" first. Anyone who has read "Inkheart" and liked it must read this, it is 9999999 times better. Anyone who likes Action/Adventure/Fantasy should read "Inkheart" then this. It is long though(635 pages i think). Please read great book!
P.S. I'm not "Cathron" thats my mom I'm a guy.

I am a huge Brendan Fraser fan; I think he is the most charming, energetic and fresh actor in Hollywood today. In this autobiographical book, Denise Tyrrell is able to capture that energy and charm in a very eloquent narrative of Brendan's life. When you think of Brendan Fraser from Encino Man to The Mummy, he does not necessarily appear to be an actor with a life story worth reading, but NOT so!!! I found his life story to be very provocative, intriguing and entertaining, with very engaging use of language by the author.

This book is required reading for anyone who enjoys Brendan Fraser or his movies. The best part is that there is still a long way to go in his career! So hopefully the author will update this great story soon.

Faascinating Reading about a Fascinating Actor

Denise Tyrrell's recently published book about Brendan Fraser is concise, precise, and a joy to read. The book goes into much detail about what has motivated Mr. Fraser to become the actor - and the man - that he is, and covers the territory in a writing style that makes the book difficult to put down. Her style flows smoothly from tales of his friends from college, to his early meetings with casting directors, to his choices in film roles - all of which told with a truthful eye. Sometimes seeming to bolster what some film critics have found to be 'weak links' in his acting choices - or in a film company's editing or promotion choices - there's never a hint at disrespect for the talent Mr. Fraser so obviously possesses. Readers looking for salacious gossip won't find it in these pages, as the author has kept her focus keen, and the respect she pays to him as the private man he is shows as well. I'd recommend this book to any film fan or even budding thespian who'd like to know the work - professionally and privately - it takes to become a good actor. I'd also recommend this book to any fan of Mr. Fraser's, whether a long-time fan or one new to his work. The reader won't be disappointed. Cheers for this book, the publishers, and of course, for young Mr. Fraser, who's just at the beginning of what many of us hope is a long and fruitful acting career.

The long awaited Brendan Fraser biography is here, and to anyone with an interest in this incredible talent this book is a must have. Fans suffering from cases of blind faith may wince a bit at the author's honesty and objectivity regarding some of Mr. Fraser's career choices and box office results. But Denise Tyrell's job was not to sugar coat the truth, instead she goes so far as to dispel many myths supported by magazine articles and talk show hosts. The book confirms what Brendan Fraser admirers have known for quite some time: that he is a completely unique individual with an incomparable gift. To those of you who are just now discovering his body of work, don't look for any behind the scenes dirt - there simply isn't any. The fact that such a genuinely pleasant person could be thriving in today's Hollywood is just one of the facts this book brings forth.

It starts out almost as a comedy but it turns dramatic halfway through.Definitely not on my top ten baseball movie lists but it is worth watching at least once.Brandon Frasier does a great job as does Albert brooks. Just seems like they switched writers in the middle of the show.

have you ever noticed that Brendan Fraser is always acting as an idiot? for example: George of the Jungle, Airheads, the Scout, every time he acts downright dumb, but for once it made sense. a scout (Albert Brooks) for the New York Yankees is sent on a grudge trip to mexico after the last player he hired turned out to be a total fluke. there he finds the greatest baseball player that ever lived, Steve Nabraska who choses in the end to play for the Yankees; but before he can play he needs permission from a psychologist that he's not topsy-turvy, which he is, and after his appointment with the doctor he fails, and this is where the movie twists, the dumbness and wildness of Brendan Fraser will have you staring crosseyed at his wackiness.

This film was better than I expected. When I saw Albert Brooks in it I expected to see his usual self absorbed, neurotic, west coast Woddy Allen trip. No so. When I looked at the credits I noticed that for the first time (in recent memory) Brooks didn't write, direct, produce, in short forgo his usual Jerry Lewis routine of running the whole show. And in doing so he (excuse the pun here) hit's a home run! He's just great as baseball scout Al Percole who after failing to bring a winner to the Yankees is relegated to the Chili circuit as "punishment" from the Yankee general manager played wonderfully by Lane Smith. But instead of coming up with heartburn from eating the very questionable food (we see people down there chewing on animal legs at games) he discovers Steve Nebraska the greatest ball player since Babe Ruth played oustandingly by Brendan Fraser. Fraser matches Brooks laugh for laugh and in doing so the two make this a very entertaining movie. Not an easy thing to do considering there is not one love interest in either man's life. The movie rests squarely on the "buddy" formula which works very well here. In fact it's more of a father son relationship instead of a bonding buddy movie. So if you like quirky comedy's with the added benefit of a sports theme you're sure to like this one. So run out and rent.....no better make that buy The Scout. I'm sure you're going to want to "catch" this one again and again!

You don't have to love either Brendan Fraser or Baseball to love this movie! I should know, because I hate baseball, but love Brendan Fraser, and I may just be a tad bit prejudiced when it comes to him.

Although the scout is about Baseball, there isn't much involving the sport except for short blips of Albert Brook looking for his 'King Kong', and the ending sequince when Brendan shows us that he truly is the king of the field. Albert Brook is hilarous as the scout who is hunting for other new protege's for the Yankee's, and Brendan is the young man who he happens to find. In mexico that is. Why he's in Mexico, and how he got there is never really explained. That and if the shrink is really his mom, or just a really concerned lady. Yeah, the story has its holes, but the comedy more than makes up for it.

I won't say anymore, more is less, and in this case its better just to see this movie than hear me explain it.

This is one of those books that people who suffered as a student in math class will appreciate especially if they have to teach math conceptes to their children or others. It is a pleasure to think of learning math by examples from newspapers, comics everyday context like sport games, jokes. The point is that if you do not like a subject like math you will not do well and today educators are succeeding in finding ways to make math a fun topic and incorporating math into everyday life. Isn't the main idea of a movie to ENTERTAIN, even if the film maker is trying to deliver a message or educate? Crash is not entertaining and I couldn't figure out the message (if there was one). Perhaps the message is that racism still exists in America. So who doesn't know that already? There were too many characters in this movie and no hero or person that we could identify with. What WERE the critics thinking? Makes you wonder sometimes how the critics can sometimes be so far out of touch with what the public likes. Makes me begin to wonder why we even listen to the critics, as they too often get it wrong. This is another one of those soulless movies that critics seem to adore (such as No County for Old Men, another waste of time). Not even the big stars can rescue this stinker. Did anyone read the script before they agreed to be in this? Amazes me that this is one of the most rented movies from Blockbuster. For a movie that tries to connect the lives of characters, Babel does a much better and more plausible job.

Two black men hold up a wealthy white class couple and steal their car. Another couple, this time black, gets pulled over by two white policeman. One of the policemen victimizes the woman and later in the story heroicly saves her from a car accident. It's tear dropping. In another life, there is a black detective that gets involved in a racy case about a white male cop who supposedly shot some black men without good reason. That same detective receives a promotion just because he's black, which helps bolster the political reputation of a white man's dream. These episodes obviously point at black men as the spark behind illegal circumstances called crime. To demonstrate blacks in film as the catalyst behind rapid crime rates is like blaming that person right in front of his face; and he's paying for it.

This film is an in-your-face, contrived, waste of celluloid. What became of subtlety? We all know that race is an issue in the United States, but do we really need it spelled out in such a tawdry manner? Are people so morally dubious that nuance escapes them?

The worst part of this film is how it delights in its own over-the-top coincidences. As if you are blown away by the profundity. Such idiocy goes so far that the actors are forced to pervert their skills in a sad attempt to salvage some sinking realism. One scene, where Ryan Phillipe shoots an unarmed black man, is particularly galling. In this lame scene, Phillipe is forced to abandon the development of his character completely and give in to the politically correct message being shoved down the viewer's throat. It is absurd and obscene!

Do I sympathize with some of the important issues discussed in this film? Of course. However, if your idea of portraying important issues involves bludgeoning the audience over the head in such a blatant manner, then the message is bound to fail, or worse, infuriate.

My only thought as I finished viewing this film: What a blown oppurtunity.

There are few movies in life that are "experiences"~ where the audience does not walk out of the theater, but staggers out. "Crash" is one of those rare gems that always haunts the imagination, because it does crash into all of us. I had no desire to watch this film, but relented simply because it won the Oscar. I saw every other movie nominated that year, and none come close to "Crash": it is a story of race, redemption, anger, awareness, and ultimately, the neighborhoods we live in. In the slightest of roles, Tony Danza captures the gritty reality of race expectations. His minor role is a snapshot of the other players in the film (Sandra Bullock as a snotty bitch?? Beautifully played....)

This film not only should bask in the glory of the Oscar, but move onto AFI's top 100 movies of all time. Yeah, it's that good.
