This movie had me laughing from start to finish. Why? It throws away a lot of typical comedic conventions, plays with pacing and brings irreverence to a whole new level.
Wait, plays with pacing? Yes. Segues? gone. Leave the viewer waiting for more when all other movies would have taken the cheap laugh? borderline brilliant (in terms of comedy. This is NOT a brainy film).
There's a different feel to this movie that I'm sure will leave some viewers behind...which may also explain its poor box office sales. But if you're up for the laughs in a comedy that does more than kick someone in the crotch and wait for high school boys to laugh, then this is it.
All-in-all. Two thumbs up. Watch it with some friends and I dare you not to laugh till your stomach hurts.
Parents: Outside of a brief drug reference (acid, plays almost no part in the film) and some occasional language, this movie wouldn't be too much for a young teen to handle.

"Hot Rod" follows the time-honored tradition of SNL cast members (former and current) putting out silly, hackneyed material that rarely suprises but always cracks you up (at least the good ones do). For me, this movie ranks up there with the best of its stablemates (Billy Madison, Tommy Boy, Dirty Work, Zoolander etc) in that it was poorly received by critics, appeals mostly to young adult males, has a tired plot (hapless idiot takes on seemingly insurmountable odds, stumbles along the way but ends up getting the girl and saving the day), yet is hillarious and very quotable.
If you don't think there's anything wrong with a movie that entertains (much) more than it enriches, and enjoy stupid jokes and gag humor like those found in the aforementioned movies, then you'll probably enjoy 'Hot Rod'. Bonus: The soundtrack is awesomely 80's and Will Arnette plays a perfect D-bag.

I like all types of movies...this one is HILARIOUS!
Hot Rod is a lot like Billy madison or Anchorman - you have to watch it twice before it starts proving how funny it is!
I have been quoting it over and over since the first time I saw it. Teh extra features were pretty fun, too.

Hot Rod (Andy Samberg) would love to follow in the footsteps of his deceased father, a former stunt man who worked closely with Evel Knievel. He is really much to old to be practicing childish stunts unsuccessfully, but when he learns that his step-father (Ian McShane) needs a heart transplant the family cannot afford, he decides to take his career ambitions seriously to raise money for the operation. Along with his crew (Jorma Taccone, Bill Hader, Danny R. McBride, and Isla Fisher), he devises an insane plot to bring his step-father back to full health, and simply so he can beat him up to prove that he is indeed a man.
The trailers for this movie are decieving. They depict tired jokes and a lame plot. They give the wrong impression, because this movie is packed with hilarious moments. The plot doesn't matter at all; the humor comes from the randomness of the scenes and the goofyness of Rod. The character is similar to Napoleon Dynamite but the humor is much more obvious. Samberg has to be one of the funniest comedians to hit SNL for a long time. His brand of humor is very fresh and relevant to the current generation.
Furthermore, the extra features on the DVD are very funny. The making-of featurette shows the cast and crew joking around with each other. Some of the deleted scenes are hilarious, and seeing Rod's punch dance alongside Kevin Bacon's in Footloose is a delight.
From "Hey, Rod, what's that song about a grandma getting run over by a reindeer?" to "I need to go to my quiet place!", you'll find yourself quoting this movie constantly. It is just that funny.

'Hot Rod' had it's moments, but the lead character (and the general humor of the movie) got annoying & tired after a while. The movie was more of a prolonged skit, though; not a terrible sunday afternoon time waster.
It's worth a rental, not a purchase.

I went to the theatre to see this thinking that it could go either way. Either all the funny parts were in the trailer and it was going to largely suck OR it would be surprisingly funny. And it was most definitely the latter. I laughed out loud the whole way through. Tell me the scene in "the wooded glenn" where he does his 'Footloose' take off and the accompanying fall, and fall, and fall, and fall, is not hysterical and I will show you a prude and pretentious film snob incapable of enjoying anything not in the realm of 'Citizen Kane' or ' Lawrence of Arabia'. If you go into this movie with an open mind, you should enjoy the heck out of it.
Specifically about the movie's tone, it is surprisingly affectionate towards its characters. They all genuinely like each other and want to help Rod be successful even though he is talentless as a stuntman. That he so unabashedly pursues it is actually half the fun of the movie. So between the failed stunts via the moped, the fights with Frank, the last of which makes for one of the great comedy endings of all time, and the training Rod goes thru to prepare for the big jump ("Whhhis-key! Whhhiskeyyy!!!!!!!"), the riot that breaks out as they make their way to the fairgrounds where the jump is to take place ("did we cause that?")....it's all just gold. Don't go in expecting 'Dr. Zhivago' and you will laugh your head off. Compared to the other comedy that was out around the same time that this may have been compared to ("Superbad"), "Hot Rod" is WAAAAYYYYY funnier. Highly recommended!!!

An illuminating miniature on a legendary house that was almost destroyed by the New England hurricane of 1938 and succumbed to fire in 1973. It was NeutraÕs grandestÑand most unlikelyÑcommission: a summer house for a famous Rhode Island family on Fishers Island. John Nicholas Brown picked Neutra after seeing the MoMA exhibition on modern architecture that included the Lovell Health House. Neumann, a professor of architecture at Brown University, recently curated an exhibition on the house that may eventually be shown in LA. Meanwhile we can enjoy his entertaining account of how the patrician client and progressive architect corresponded and faced off, and the camel that resulted from the collaboration of this odd couple. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)

The book is excellent, I loved it. She spits hot fire onto da pages. Everybody love Isla, because she's on fiah, innit? Serious though, one time she was on fiah and I hadda put it out. I smother it wif a pink hand towel. Isla was upset because it was the towel in the bathroom that is only for guests and because she was burned. Anycase, the book was very realistic- I know what it's like to be seduced and abused by lots of fame. It hurt so good. Booyaka shot!

This book is a literary work of art and its depth conveys a sense of accomplishment from its gifted author.
Had ya there didnt I!!?
Isla Fisher is an attention seeking second rate actress who will sell her soul to the devil for fourteen and a half minutes of fame.
This book is not worth the paper it's printed on.

Man, I bought this book when I was in a really low place. I had a really tough time in high school - my parents sent me to a lot of 'people' to talk to, none of it really worked. I just felt like I didn't fit in, like nobody really knew who I actually was, like, underneath my skin. But then this book made me realize that all those famous people that we read about in magazines are totally like us. I mean, in the end, there is no real difference. We're all people. We're all one race... the human race. It's because of this book that I was cured of my four year struggle with social anxiety disorder. Thank you, Isla. You saved my life.

The previews give it no justice, the comedy in it is along the same lines as Neopoleon Dynamite. It grows on you very quickly.
Not only that, but it has Will Arnett (Arrested Development, Blades of Glory), Bill Hader (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Superbad), Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers) to aid the cast. The premise of the movie is pretty lucrative, and the narrative/characters definitely use this to satire other movies. The situations, messed up stunts, and witty lines are what make this movie so funny.
I'm glad that I finally caught this movie, definitely one to watch w/ your friends.
