Tomie dePaola describes how a grandfather's love and physical care for his grandson is given back when the tables are turned in the grandfather's needy old age. DePaola's words and pictures are gentle and communicative. The grandfather's own words, "Now one foot, now the other," return to him when he needs them.

This book tells the story of a child learning to relate to his beloved grandfather after the grandfather suffers a stroke. It is told simply, realistically, lovingly, and from the child's point of view, covering the range of normal emotional reactions. This book is marvelous! Highly recommended, even for very young children.

It had me in tears. You can imagine my 7-year old was quite amazed at the sight... The author manages to put so much feeling into very simple sentences. It makes it very easy for young (and old) to understand how important each family member is to the whole family, especially when there are special needs.

We borrowed this book from the library, so I didn't know what to expect, but towards the middle, I figured out what was going to happen, and got all choked up. My daughter kept turning over to me, since I had to whisper, so I wouldn't cry (my dad had recently gone through 4 months of illness which almost took his life). It definitely explains "stroke" well in simple words, deals with the emotions of the family, and discusses how to care for an ill person. It does have a positive ending, so keep that in mind, in case you're dealing with a possible death. It's very well written, tugs at the heart strings, and the important parts really come through.

Such a wonderful book! It comes at a time for our family when Grandma's health is declining. For our daughter who is nearly three, Grandma seems a bit scary, since she doesn't look and act quite like herself. When we visit Grandma, she tends to moan a bit, which is very frightening to our toddler.

This beautiful story is about a boy named Bobby and his Grandfather, Bob, who lives with Bobby and his parents. They have a lovely relationship; they spend lots of time together, building with blocks and sharing stories. Bobby especially likes for Bob to tell him the story about how Bobby learned to walk... ''Now one foot, now the other.''

When Bobby is 5 years old, Bob has a stroke, and the little boy is frightened by the changes in his grandfather. Once Bob finally gets home from the hospital, he doesn't seem to recognize Bobby. The first sound Bob tries to make ''sounds like a monster'' to Bobby, but Bobby learns to understand Bob and, through love and persistence, is instrumental in Bob's recovery.

I'm sure that this book will help my daughter to understand why Grandma isn't quite herself. Hopefully, our visits to see Grandma will be less stressful for her (and for me). After reading this story to my toddler at least dozen times (we received this book in the mail just three days ago), I can finally keep from tearing up until the very last page. I highly recommend this lovely book!

Pearls of Justice seems to cover everything in a poetical way-life, dreams, and society. This is not your run of the mill poetry book! This is a book of reason and Justice for self and humanity, I am confident that Decheonbae is only going to higher levels in his next set of writing's but somehow I think he did it now. I can only be amazed of what this man do next because he is breaking all traditional barriers! I must say he is a challenging young indivisual with a extreme view on life and I am glad that I finally recieved my book! I must say like the others, this book is definetly 'something new and promissing"-this man got talent and from what I've been hearing "VERISMO" is a must have! A very beautiful, very human portrayal of Mary, Mother of God. Houselander steps into the heart of Mary and reveals to us a real, down-to-earth wife and mother with whom we can identify. Catholic and non-Catholic readers alike will be pleasantly surprised: "Mary of Nazareth is not so different from me!"

Through the words and illustrations of this book what shines through is the beautiful love of a woman for Christ and His Church. It is a devotional work, interspersed with Houselander's poetry. She writes from an early twentieth century English outlook and thus her chapters are interspersed with examples from the war. She doesn't get stuck in this contemporary setting though, but rather effectively uses it to bring the life of the Christian to greater clarity. In the course of the book she accomplishes two things beautifully. First she shows the importance for the Christian of a relationship with Mary. How the example of Mary can inspire and guide us, especially in difficult times, and how we can turn to her as an intercessor and mother. Secondly, she shows how Mary draws us towards Christ, and how ultimately our relationship with Mary is senseless otherwise.

This book, written in 1944 (I believe) is just wonderful. It, more than anything I have read, has brought me closer to Our Blessed Mother, and hence, to Christ Himself. Filled with lyrical prose and touching analogies, Houselander shows how Mary was the "Reed of God" waiting to be filled (with her maternity)...and that we are ALL vessels waiting to do God's work, and carrying Christ within us. Just remarkable.

William Badke has written an excellent and extremely useful reference book on how to start research projects. As he aptly describes, getting started is probably the most difficult part of a research project; especially for those of us who are new to the art of researching.

The book is well written and referenced, with the author writing with a sense of humour and this also makes the book appealing since it could otherwise be a dry, boring book without the author's humour creeping into the pages.

While the new-to-the-art-of-researching student will find this book very interesting and helpful; many experienced researchers will find the book helpful also. The author describes how to use various resources, such as internet, periodicals and catalogues to assist the researcher realise his/her project goals.

In summary, a very well written and laid out book by a person very experienced in the the field of research. Definitely recommended for the novice researcher, however would also be useful for the advanced researcher. Well done, William Badke!

Fun, thorough approach to learning library research skills

This book, now in its third edition, is a great introduction to library research for undergraduates and upper division high school students who are heading off to college soon. I'm planning on using it in for high school advanced library research course.
The author, a college librarian in British Columbia, gives a step-by-step introduction to the "information fog" and deals with such topics as defining the need for research and refining a topic, using keyword searching and metadata and controlled vocabularies, library catalogs and online databases, general internet research and other research sources.
A strength of the book is the humorous approach which tones down what most other authors seem to take too seriously. In his preface, for example, Badke states: "This book is definitely for you if you are: a university student whose term papers have been patented as a cure for insomnia; a Dilbert of industry who's been told to do a feasibility study on the expansion potential of ice cream bar sales in Nome, Alaska; a simple honest citizen trying to find the truth behind the advertising so that the next car you buy won't be like your last disaster-mobile, the car that made you persona non grata at the automobile association."
I had an earlier edition of this title which I liked also and so when I discovered the 3rd edition had been published I immediately ordered it. The way that the world of research changes continually means that what was once cutting edge is no longer so and having the latest is really important. I was impressed that the book mentions the Amazon Kindle which was only made available last (2007) November.
I reviewed several other similar recently published texts on information literacy but this one definitely is heads and shoulder above them all in terms of usefulness, cost and a light touch to a rather dry subject.

We live in the "information age". Communication on the information highway is fast pace. However, the problem is most of us don't have the map needed to travel that highway and so we have great challenges finding the destination. The material in Dr. Badke's book is the road map to the information highway. This book is the "GPS" to the information highway.

If readers follow this guide, they should be able to access the information needed much quicker and easier. It will save students valuable time as they learn research skills and strategies needed (needed for college and universities assignments). It will also make the research more accurate, as the student learns how to access information written by the best scholars in the field. A small price to pay for a resource is worth so much.

The author writes in an easy to read style. Hint: to get the most benefit out of this resource, take the time to do the practice exercises before getting involved in your actual research. If you do this, it should take you less time to do the actual research for your assignments. Try it. It works.

This book serves as a useful introduction to research techniques and options for the late high school or early-to-mid-level college student beginning research. Badke's writing focuses on finding sources and writing research papers. The writing assumes no current knowledge of conducting research of any kind, so parts may be simplistic for many, but there is a wealth of great research strategies within.

He begins with a look at paper design, and the place from which to begin your research. He then moves to database, periodical and internet searches. He then discusses how to formulate your research into a working topic, and organizing your data.

He writes for people who have never really used a library effectively or used a computer for research. Overall, this is a superb introduction to research that should be read by anyone attempting research.

Badke hits another home run...

This update to Badke's previous work on library research is excellent. I teach Language and Research at a Bible college and used to use his first book as required reading for my students. I was so disappointed when it went out of print. Now, this updated version is my new requirement. This book is written with the same humor and simplicity as the first, but with updated information that is a must. Dealing with electronic research is now the norm and Badke explains it very, very well. This is a must have resource for anyone taking on research.

Communal appreciation

Review Date: 2006-06-05
It has been said that, were the book invented today, people would be amazed by the technology: compact, portable, able to be scanned front and back with the flick of a finger, perfect for storing commentary. And books have a presence and a weight, that other forms of written communication continue to lack, whatever the media in which they appear. Would anyone perceive a lasting need, after all, for "blog discussion groups?"

Lauren Zina John's comprehensive, illuminating and often amusing account of how to bring readers together to share their experiences of a book reimnds us that reading may be solitary in execution, but it is, in the end, communal in its effect. This worthy addition to my reference library reminds me why reading a book alone is like traveling alone: you will appreciate what you see, but how better it is when there are others who, as interested as you, have come along for the journey.

A big thank you to Mrs. John for reminding us all why we read and why it is that we need to bring our experiences of what we read into a room filled with other readers.

Wow! Here's a book that tells you -- in wonderfully comprehensive (and delicious) detail -- everything you could ever hope to know about book discussion groups. Lauren John's "Running Book Discussion Groups (A How-To-Do-It Manual)" is a wellspring of historical data, organizational tips, publicity techniques, content summaries, managerial information, and very practical pointers about group synamics and group management. And at the center are ten unbelievably helpful 10-20 page samples of specific individual group meetings, including book summaries, author biographies, reasons for the choice of book, sources for procuring the book, materials to support discussion, and even intelligent and trenchant discussion questions. All this is presented in a witty package written by a warm, inventive, charismatic book-group-leader and professionaol librarian who could charm the words from the trees -- from her first admonitory anecdote about the book group member who felt she wa being victimized through the final listings of up-to-date references about the topic under discussion. This book is a must for the thousands of book group discussion leaders and would-be leaders as well as a delightful and useful read for the hundreds of thousands of book group members and educators in our midst.

Running Book Discussion Groups

Review Date: 2006-05-08
This work is immensely practical and useful for book discussion leaders, priceless for anyone trying to start or maintain a group. As a librarian, I think it is indispensable.

It begins with an overview of the history of book discussion groups, beginning as they floated toward America to the present, including the Oprah era. She outlines the elements required for success, such as publicity, recruitment, book selection and overcoming book group anxiety. There are stories from group organizers summarizing their experiences and sample forms to survey potential members to set times, audience and topics. Other information includes suggestions for covering a variety of genres, sample flyers, press releases and group Web pages with author links and other potential resources.

The nuts and bolts of the actual discussion section offers hints on breaking the ice, playing devil's advocate, readers who dominate the conversation or don't talk at all, hosting an author, and online book groups. Perhaps for new leaders the most useful section is the 10 books for which John has prepared the summary, author biography, rationale for selection, publication and access information, support materials - including film versions, and discussion questions. This analysis model can be generalized by book group leaders preparing other titles for their sessions. I strongly recommend this title.

S Club 7 In Miami's Official Scrapbook is definitely a gem. I was expecting to recieve the book and see pictures and information about the show that I already knew. However, this book has tons and tons of pictures that I've never seen before! There's at least four pages simply devoted to pictures of the show in a really cute scrapbook style. Also, there are two pages devoted to each S Club 7 member telling a little bit about them. There's a couple of other pages that talk about the show's episodes and their summaries, what songs are performed on what episode, etc. All in all, this was an excellent buy and I only wish S Club's three other TV series were scrapbooked like this! I recommend this to anyone who loves S Club or their series Miami 7.

The key factor to Carlton Mellick's success as a writer is his humor.
It's possible to get lost in the sea of absurdity that Mellick's paints. However, his humor tends to hold everything together nicely.
This is a North Pole loaded with sexual deviant elves, a nazi-Frosty, a Santa made of meat and chainsaw angel wings.
Definitely not your parents Holiday yarn. Mellick has once again proven he is one of the top cynical voices of our generation.

First of all, the cover, by Ed Mironiuk, is great. The colors are much more vibrant on the actual book. What you can't see on Amazon, is that on the back, there is a little snowman with hammers for arms and forks sticking out of its head. It's pretty funny.

Now, as for the story--this is a twisted take on the classic sort of Christmas tales that pop up a month or so before Christmas. It plays with the concept, though, because this is no sappy, sweet tale--this is a surly, irreverent version of Christmas where you leave beer for Santa instead of cookies. Can Christmas be saved? Do you care?

The style is concise, fast, and humorous. I laughed out loud at some points of the book. Mellick explores a lot of really interesting ideas, which is one of the things I liked the most.

So, may you have a Christmas. Read this book, and leave a beer for Santa.

This book is totally hilarious. The story is basically about when an evil Frosty the Snowman who threatens to destroy Christmas, a character named "Sly Guy" Matthew Fry teams up with Santa and the elves along with Sly Guys totally wicked wife, Decapitron, to save the day. Santa is a crazy jolly pirate made out of sausage. Decapitron is has a candy cane samurai sword and is a pro street fighter. The elves are obsessed with dressing up like Dungeons & Dragons characters. And Frosty....well you'll just have to read the book to learn about Frosty.

This book is like South Park, Futurama, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and The Night Before Christmas all wrapped together with a giant chainsaw bow and a fancy hairdo. It's a ball of laughs and totally fun!

This is the best Christmas tale that I've read since How The Grinch Stole Christmas. This book is like a twisted Dr. Seuss for ADULTS.

The true story of Santa Claus is the story of Sausagey Santa; claims Decapitron, the main character's wife. According to her, Santa was a really bad guy who hated children and god punished him by giving him immortal life and making him spend an eternity bringing children joy and cheer. Actually, Sausagey Santa is a pretty sweet guy, kind of like a friendly pirate. He and Decapitron's family embark on an adventure to save Christmas from an evil Frosty the Snowman.

Filled with zombie snowmen, exploding reindeer, elf sex, christmas fetish-wear, sly guy hairstyles, and elves that are into Dungeons & Dragons; this book is spectacular, humorous and bizarro.

I am buying everyone I know I copy of this for Christmas this year!

The photos in this calendar are absolutely stunning. I bought three calendars this year (for work, home office, and kitchen) and this one is by far my favorite. The photography can't be beat, and there is plenty of room for writing multiple daily events.

We buy these every year not only to give as gifts to our family but because we want to support the Sierra Club in its efforts to save our world ecology. I didn't find the pictures as inspiring this year but they're still beautiful. And our friends and family always appreciate them.

Every year I purchase this calendar, hang it in my cube and hear the many compliments. The shots are gorgeous and afterwards, their generous size and excellent quality are easily frame-worthy. I recommend it for the person who likes to look over once in a while and visualize themselves to a calming, secluded area in North America that they may never get to visit (and may not be the same if I do). Support a good cause and appreciate the vast areas of nature at her finest.

For all the author's flights of fantasy, Callanish excepted, he is at his most potent bringing the very real conflicts which worm the inside of an artist's mind to life in our imaginaries. Jim Stonor, the lad, is less interesting than his vagrant father, but as a sculptor, painter, and craftsman of wood, the shadow the eagle's wing casts over our imaginaries shivers the founding rock of our modern, tv-eye view of life.

William Horwood's book, "The Stonor Eagles" is most definitely a most beautifully written piece of literary art. I love it like a dear friend and will read it again and again.

Mr. Horwood captures the essence of a creative being, and through the simultaneous story of a man and the survival of sea eagles, brings courage and joy to the act of creation. As with all of his books, truth is exposed on all levels and given the depth and richness of a heart filled with love and reverance for life. This story will always live in my heart as my own "wings" to freedom. No matter how deep my despair or how high my glory, "The Stonor Eagles" gives me the ability to find my own worth and inner power, and inspires me to do and be what I'm here for - being alive as a conduit for Source filled vision and the sharing of Knowledge from Within; "true flight" of the spirit.

I am not a person who easily 'gets into a book'. It has to be something very special to keep my interest. William Horwood's 'The Stonor Eagles' not only managed to hold my interest - it totally captivated me with its content. I would go so far as to state that it is the most beautifully written book I have ever cast eyes on. The author had obviously researched his subject very thoroughly and was therefore able to weave the factual aspect into the wonderfully imaginative fiction so successfully. This book is truly a work of art and I challenge anyone to read it without being emotionally moved!

This is a deeply moving and outstanding book.

I was continually amazed at the way in which Mr. Horwood has interweaved two stories, and brought them both to a believable and emotionally satisfying ending. I felt myself joined in spirit to the author and his characters as I read this double story about transformation, spiritual obedience and love of the earth. My heartfelt thanks and appreciation go to William Horwood!

If possible, even better than Duncton.

Intelligent, thought provoking, I was unable to put this book down.

The depth of character and understanding and ability to put these forward in a truly awesome literary work was not a work of fiction, more like the creation of an alternative universe.

This man, who's Duncton Wood series escalated the entire genre to the highest form of art has merged two worlds into an altogether new one.

I cannot praise or rate this novel higher.

I have been altered by reading it.

Thank You William Horwood.
