Mr. Rubin had me totally immersed into this fast-paced cinematic novel of World War II. I simply could not "put the book down" till reading the words "The End" (Actually a few pages after that...) The rock-solid heroes and double-faced villains, the mad Führer and his cartoonesque lieutenants, Hollywood war-time propaganda movie-makers and abused japanese-americans: all are casted in this production screening in my mind's theater over and over again.
4-F Blues: A Novel of WWII Hollywood.

I loved the glitz and glamour and inner workings of Hollywood and with the overlay of WWII, Charles Rubin has exquisitely woven a wonderful story in a wonderful time. I loved being there. The characters are a diverse group, glamorous, tough, compassionate, calculating and more, each adding a new dimension to a book to become absolutely engrossed in. Oh, and I found myself smiling a lot.

As I was browsing through my usual section of non fiction material, I suppose "By Chance" I came across a most delightful fiction based on fact book entitled 4 F blues. This book is about world war 2 and Hollywood and takes place in an era slightly before my time. As I went to bed that night, at midnight, I planned to read a few pages before falling asleep, and low and behold I could not put this book down until I finished it at 3 am! 4 F blues is humerous and it has an easy flow to read. It is not written as some books I have read where the descriptions are so flowery that I lost sight of the plot. I actually became so engrossed with the plot and setting, that for 3 hours I felt that I knew the characters personally, and lived there during that time period. The author was able to take sensitive subjects such as WW II, Hollywood politics, and the Japanese Internment Camps and to create a fun and humerous, yet very empowering book. The main characters withhold their highest personal integrity, even with all odds against them. For me it was a nostalgic look at a Hollywood of the past, the glamour, an inside look, and the reality that movies and their characters reflect our history and the mindset of the people during a particular era. Speaking of movies I feel that this book would make a great uplifting movie.

I am a huge fan of this series. I read every book in the previous Fearless series. I was looking forward to the FBI series, but it's begining to worry me. For starters, I hated the characters of Catherine and Kim. Will is ok but he does not compare to Sam or Ed, Gaia's previous boyfriends in other books. Gaia has never been stupid. As a teen she was intelligent, strong and capable. She never would have done such stupid things as she has done in this book. If you haven't read the book yet, stop reading because this will contain spoilers. I think it's incredibly stupid for Gaia to have gone off on her own searching for Catherine. If Gaia thinks the FBI is a good enough orginization to join, why would she question them regarding Catherine's disapperance? Shouldn't she have trusted them? Ignoring the FBI's orders and going after Catherine was very out of character for Gaia. Even for someone who has had trust issues in the past, they wouldn't ignore the FBI and trust complete strangers like Marsh. It just doesn't make sense. I didn't like how the book abandoned the lollipop case for awhile and then went off on this whole terrorist thing. The FBI doesn't know Catherine is terrorist? Give me a break! It was so stupid. Like the FBI wouldn't know about terrorists planting bombs under the city streets of Philadelphia. And like the FBI uses passcards for security. Hello! They'd use fingerprint or eye/retinal scans. Even a 6th grader should be aware of these flaws. Despite the flaws, I still give this book a 3 because I love the character of Gaia so much and I have hopes that the series will get back on track. I am currently reading the latest book and it's back on track with the lolli pop murder case. Stick to the cases and no more terrorists stuff, please!

Agent Out is a continuation of the last book, Live Bait. Gaia goes looking for her partner and friend Catherine by herself against FBI orders. This book is filled with SO many suprises, especially near the end. It mixes romance and adventure, just like the other Fearless books which makes this book so good. The ending is so unexpected it is by far my favorite Fearless book! I would recommend it to any Fearless fan!

I loved this book. I tried to go slower so i would have to wait as long for the next one but it didn't exactly work.In the beginning evrything makes sense and u just want Gaia to find Catherine. But nearer to the end you get confused and its one of those suspensed kind of confusing feelings. I have read every fearless book and reccomend the to ANYONE and EVERYONE. If u like suspense or staying up all nihgt reading u will love these books. The FBI series is a new series but i would reccomend reading the fearless series first. She ties the old books in very well! Gaia still hasn't gotten over Jake, and that plays a part in this series because she doesn't want to lie to will like she did to jake and sam and ed. So eventually she decides to tell him her secret and he doesn't even believe her!! He will eventually. Gaia is once agian forced to belive that she should never trust anyone when she is betrayed yet AGAIN. From who? now that ur going to have to read to find out about. Once agian great book. I can't believe we have to wait till JUNE for the next one!

My 12 year old and then my wife have read this nifty little book before I got to read the father's day present. I generally like less-than-one-hour biographies with pictures, particularly of inventors.
Great book for readers at 4th grade level and above.
For adults, if you admit to liking cliff notes, I would recommend this book on Archimedes first, before buying something more scholarly.

A wonderful read!

This book is about Archimedes' life. He found out how to measure a circle and the principle of buoyancy. He invented the Archimedes' screw. He moved a ship full of cargo with one hand and a machine he built. And he did all this without electricity. I think that you will love this book.

Placing scientific theory in historical context is a concept that sounds dreadful. My children loved it. They adore the comic stories of Archimedes. My eight year-old son couldn't put it down. As a parent of a boy to 'hates to read,' it was AMAZING to hear my son giggling and laughing out loud while studying history and science on his own. What was even more thrilling, was listening to him apply the knowledge to everything from playing with Knex to a catapult.

One of the Greats

Like others, I read this to my homeschooled children. After reading this book, I probably appreciated Archimedes more than they did. For adults and children alike, this is a great introduction to one of the world's (not just the ancient world's) analytical thinkers. This book presents a good mix of scientific education and humanizing biography. We learn that Archimedes died too soon as the result of a stupid misunderstanding, and the world was denied the other scientific advances that he could have given us.

I have had an interest in buying this book for many years. It is recommended in virtually every reputable catalog. It just always seemed like when essential schoolbooks were purchased, it didn't make sense to purchase a book about just ONE person. Well, that was a gigantic mistake on my part. The accomplishments of Archimedes made him one of the most important founders of science. This captivating book tells the story of Archimedes life AND gives vivid imagery to his accomplishments through simple, effective text and delightful illustrations. From my 3rd grader to my 10th grader, they all eagerly finished the book with enthusiastic comprehension. Of course, the "Eureka" story stood out to all, but other concepts such as levers and water displacement were covered in a way that brought clarity to those scientific principles. So this book is not about one man, but a plethora of important scientific observations.

This is a must-read comedy drama book. If you like funny giants hallucinating little girls then this is the book for you. The main characters are Sophie and the B F G. What happened in the story are good friendships and some scary giant's gross food and a five star adventure. The problem is that they have to capture the nine cannibalistic giants and those nine other giants are fifty feet tall. (The B F G is twenty five feet tall.)
My favorite part of the story is when the B FG eats some eggs for the first time. And the funny, brave and "bobwigling" author Roald Dahl invents funny and creative words. If you're thinking about buying this book, don't think, just buy!

I have been looking for this book EVERYWHERE! My problem was that I didn't remember the title correctly. I first read this book 13 years ago when I was 12. I remember Just falling in love with it. the next 3 years I would go back andre check it out several times. I know it is probably a simple read for me now, but its one of those books that I loved so much, I memorized the whole story.
I love the characters and their special bond with each other. In the beginning, you get to see how normal they are. they're just teens with the normal stresses of other teens(except for the prince who has to deal with all the pressure that brings)
and its interesting how their"episodes" just become a normal part of life. I could go on and on and basically retell the story, so all I will say, is that it is an easy read that you won't be able to put down.

Excellent Reading!

Connie ("I hate Constance") Hendrix and Rudolph (Rudy) - the crown prince of the ficticious Thulgaria - were born at the same moment, with brain waves that are nearly identical, though this is theoretically impossible. These similarities, besides making them the best of friends, even across vast distances, also give them the special gift of sharing their minds by telepathy. It was during one of these involuntary sharings that Connie is witness to Rudy's kidnapping and is the only one who can help him.

Although the plot is fantasy / sci-fi in nature, just about anyone will enjoy this wonderful story. In fact, I think this is probably the first fantasy book that I read. Hmm, and ten years later I'm still reading it! Definitely a must read!

One of the many books that pushed me into enjoying the science fiction genre. The concept for this book is incredibly original and really appealed to me when I was younger and still appeals to me many years later.

This story alternates between the point of view of the two main characters - Connie, a typical American teen and Rudy, the crown prince of a small (fictional) European country. They share a secret bond that no one else is aware of - they suffer headaches and fainting spells, but when one passes out they enter the other's mind and share what they see and hear. The 'visitor' cannot communicate with them, but the 'awake' teen is aware of the other's presence in their mind. Both guard their secret relationship fiercly until one night Rudy is kidnapped while Connie is 'with' him and she has to convince her family, and his, so that she can help to rescue him.

Connie and Rudy are both extremely well developed characters. The plot is well developed and keeps the reader involved to the very end.

Something about the idea of occasionally co-existing with someone from so far away and sharing a relationship that is so close and so private is really appealing, despite the problems it caused the main characters. Every kid wants a friend who truly understands them and this is a great manifestation of that desire.

I first want to say that I have read many Christian books and study the Bible frequently, and I am an ordained Baptist Deacon. This book has been so helpful to me when I have been feeling down or confused about the simplest topics. I recently had lots of doubts and fears over a new job that I had taken, which was causing me so much stress that I felt, I could barely deal with it. The stress was so great that it was interfering with my work, my time spent with family and with my time spent with God. When I read the section on stress it was like a battery recharge, it helped me to put my work stress in perspective and literally made me feel better immediately. Nothing here is new material for me, but it is presented in such a way that it will open your eyes and lift your spirits.

We are all growing everyday and it is our choice how we grow depending on what we feed our minds.

This book is a must have for every Christian family, and I highly recommend it.

An important addition to the history of the Cold War

Perhaps you'd have to be intersted in flying to fully appreciate this book--There is lots and lots of intersting stuff about flying under adversse conditions. However, I was attracted to this book primarily because of my interst in the history of modern China, and the transition from rule by the Guomindang to the Communist Party.

As history, it is absolutely fascinating and very helpful. The story concerns CAT (Civil Air Transport), a small (at that time) airline started as a civilian business enterprise after World War II by General Claire Chennault, former commander of the Flying Tigers. The company was put together in Mainland China while Chiang Kai-Shek was still in charge. The airline manages to survive the Communist revolution by moving to Taiwan. The author flew for the airline throughout this period, and gives rich insight into the transition.

The book also gives a new insight into the problems of the French in Indochina, and some of the feelings of resentment toward a European country which was clearly intersted in preserving colonialism (with very large amounts of American money) rather than promoting freedom. One of the main characters of the story was killed flying supplies to the French at Dien Bien Phu after CAT became a front for the CIA in the early fifites.

This book would appeal most directly to flying buffs, and to those (like myself) who are intersted in finding alternative sources for the history of this very important period. The book is very readable, and contains a number of pictures, as well as many, many intersting anecdotes, and key historical information that cannot be obtained from other sources.

a must-have for Flying Tigers fans

Claire Chennault's legend just keeps on growing. Here is a feast for readers who can't get enough of the man who led the Flying Tigers, the 14th Air Force, and the cargo line that became Air America.

Felix Smith isn't a historian. He's a pilot--a good one, since he survived 23 years with Civil Air Transport, organized to carry relief supplies around postwar China, only to become a paramilitary arm of Chiang Kai-shek's campaign against communism.

To our great good fortune, Smith also turns out to be a gifted reporter. Better than anyone else, he evokes the sights, smells, and sounds of China in 1945, along with an economy so weak that U.S. dollars were precious enough to be washed and ironed after use, and a government so depraved that it's a wonder it lasted until 1949.

China Pilot is a a wonderful book. It belongs on the shelf of every admirer of Chennault and his unorthodox air forces.

Felix Smith is a gifted writer, who is able to describe a scene or an incident with carefully selected, compact, beautiful prose. There are plenty of flying stories for the aviation enthusiast in this book, but the writing is never too technical to confuse the uninitiated. His story of China in turmoil, and a shoestring airline staffed with unusual characters, is compelling indeed, and is thoroughly recommended.

My one criticism is the lack of historical thread of the airline after its ejection from China. The book breaks down to a series of interesting anecdotes, but the background on how CAT evolved, how it acquired jets, how Smith himself transitioned to sophisticated jet transports, is missing. I found many of the later anecdotes, though well written and compelling, oddly out of context, and wondered how they fitted into the big picture. This wasn't helped by Smith's technique of sometimes mentioning a character, and only introducing him in later pages, which has you thumbing back through the book seeing if perhaps you'd missed a passage.

But these are small criticisms indeed, and the book is a very enjoyable read of a turbulent and, frankly, romantic era of aviation.

Having spent an appreciable amount of time in Asia myself, and being an admirer of the exploits of the famed Flying Tigers (AVG), I ordered four books at one time. I saved this book for last, since Mr. Smith was not an original member of the Flying Tigers. After reading, and enjoying the others, I began Mr. Smith's CHINA PILOT. I don't know what I thought I would get out of this book, but I loved it! Felix Smith was obviously one of the very best pilots working in an Asia in turmoil at that time. His narration of the many adventures he was involved in draw the reader right into the cockpit with him. I could SEE Earthquake Magoon! I could SMELL the warm night air through the open cockpit window while flying over some jungle in Vietnam or Laos. I wholeheartedly recommend this fine book to those interested in the Far East and the many roles the AVG-CAT-Air America played during those decades of turbulence. Mr. Smith, if you happen to read this: excellent job! Both on the book, and particularly your interesting life.

This book is about aviation during the pioneer days in Asia - before the days of navigational beacons and proper runway lighting. More importantly, and misleadingly from the title, it is probably one of the best "on the ground" histories of Air America's operations written from a pilot's point of view. It is written with heart, soul and compassion by a man who cared (and obviously still does) for his companions, both living and deceased, as well as the people in the places where he flew.

The stories, in civil aviation terms, are amazing and while some of them are terribly sad they keep alive the memory of many good men who would otherwise be forgotten. Aside from the narrative, this is a tremendously well written book, and one that if you love aviation and are interested in and care about Asia, you will not want to put down. If the Author, (Felix Smith) writes another book, I sincerely hope that he finds a ready publisher and many readers, as in this day and age this genre of literature and narrative quality of real life experience is truly rare.

I first saw the movie version of this book about 10 years ago. I was stunned and I had to read the book. After much searching and alot of trouble I found it at a used bookstore. The search was worth it. The book takes the reader deeper into Berlin's underworld and truly exposes the heroin lifestyle for what it is, a nightmare. i also recommend the book Panic In Needle Park, if you can find it. ...

Before I was Born

You hear how shocked people are by the extent of drug abuse in 'our day and age' and 'what the young people get up to', but here is a chilling and important book written, about the destruction of a child, before I was born. People need to know this stuff - and the reason 'H' is such an important book is because it is written from the inside out. No-one can understand who hasn't been there, and they shouldn't pretend to or try to. There is certainly no place for judgement.
I was interested by Vicky790's comments that there are websites about Christiane which might tell us about her now, 20 years on, but all I can find are pictures of the film. Anyone got any tips?

I have read this book on several occassions and I still find it shocking even as a 34 year old.

I think this book should be read in schools, and I am disappointed it is no longer in print or available in book shops.

This is the type of book I feel should be available in light of the tragic drug problem we now seem to have. It gives a more realistic interpretation of what a drug addicts life is really like and how it isn't the glamourous life some think it is.

Christiane is still fighting with her addiction now, so it is not an easy thing to escape. If you are interested there are web sites about Christiane, just use your search facilities.

The ugly Truth

Any Teenager should have read this book or at least have seen the movie. This is not a fictional Story, it's the ugly Truth that most people don't want to know. Instead of pointing the Finger at the Addicts, people should get a bare impression of what they go through everyday and how easy it is to become an addict. For me, the most shocking thing about this book was, that if I would have been in that scene (Berlin 70's), I would surely also have become a junkie. This book should be read in every school, it would be actually something that we could LEARN from. Although it is certainly not a listening pleasure, everyone that is barely interested on what can go wrong should read it.

This was a required text for a design class. I found it pretty useful (in conjunction with the other text), and ended up keeping both for reference books when the class was completed.

There are zillions of books on this complex world of color.

This one is the best for all Interior Designers, students and teachers, it is written by John F. Pile, an authority in Interior Design. You will enjoy learning the Color Systems for your business, and covers the historical aspect of of the Bauhaus School of Design, and also color in Historic Interiors, including artists and personal experiences.

As a lay person just interested in learning more about the use of color in interior design, this was an excellent book. While the first several chapters were very "text bookish", the remainder was very layman friendly. I feel more confident in undertaking color projects in my home and in conversing about the use of color with friends, who are now asking my opinions. The chapters that helped me the most were on the color wheel and color relationships. I enjoyed it and will now pursue my interest in color and design.

The Complete Dinosaur

The Complete Dinosaur edited by James O. Farlow and M.K. Brett-Surman is a comprehensive book about dinosaurs. There are many contributors that have written chapter for this book, so you get different writing styles and information is duplicated at times.

This book is divided into six parts and each has chapters written by the various contributors. The parts are as follows:
Part One: The Discovery of Dinosaurs
Part Two: The Study of Dinosaurs
Part Three: The Groups of Dinosaurs
Part Four: Biology of the Dinosaurs
Part Five: Dinosaur Evolution in the Changing World of the Meszoic Era
Part Six: Dinosaurs and the Media

What I found that was very interesting was that at the end of each chapter there was extensive references. So, if you find something that piques your interest you have something else to read about, to either clarify or strengthen your viewpoint. Also, this makes the book easy to use when dealing with technical material.

This book summarizes the current knowledge about dinosaurs at the time written (1997), and currently there are only eighty professional dinosaur paleotologists in the world. This book is written like professional scientific literature, but that doesn't make it difficult to read. Reading on you will find this book is not without controversy, as vigorus disagreements among the specialists over topics of contention will be found here as they hash out these sharp divergences of opinion.

I must say, that there is some very fine artwork, with bone of skeletons, muscle structure and complete complete fleshed out dinosaurs giving the reader a full grasp of what a dinosar looks like from the inside out. Also, questions as to what dinosaurs ate, how they raised their young, and the question that was the turning point that made the movie Jurassic Park... can we isolate dinosaur DNA are just some of the many questions that have answers in this book.

All in all, the technical jargon is at a minimum and there is a glossary of terms making your reading much more fruitful. I found the narrative easy to read and the information from this book to be exceptional.

Great breadth of topics, great quality.

This is a great intermediate level dinosaur book. It has a lot of details, but not enough to prevent non-experts from following it. It has 43 chapters divided into six parts. The chapters were written by experts in the individual subjects. This has the nice feature of making the chapters fairly independent, however it also makes the presentation a bit disjointed at times.

The first part deals with the process and history of discovering dinosaurs. The history of science isn't my favorite topic, so I just skimmed this part and can't really comment on it.

The second part describes the tools and techniques used to study dinosaurs. This includes excavations, the study of bones, taxonomy and cladistics, morphology, biomolecular techniques and exhibiting dinosaurs. There is a lot of interesting information, this material is fairly fundamental to the study of dinosaurs. Some of it is pretty easy to follow, some (like data management techniques) is a little more difficult to follow (for me anyway). None of it is prohibitively difficult.

Part three is a collection of chapters covering archosaurs, early dinosaurs and the various dinosaur families. Given that they were written by different authors, there is no consistent format for the chapters. I would have liked to have seen more material on how the families are related to each other. On the whole, I liked the level of detail.

Part four describes dinosaur biology. It contains a fascinating set of topics. A partial list of them is: plants in the Mesozoic, dinosaur diets, dinosaur dynamics, dinosaur eggs (covered in a nice amount of detail) and dinosaur paleopathology (a topic that doesn't often seem to get covered in this level of detail). In my experience many of these topics are somewhat neglected (either covered only lightly or not at all), this, and the quality, made it my favorite part of the book.

The fifth part deals with dinosaur evolution, including the way their environment changed thru time. It concludes with a discussion of dinosaur extinction, presenting both gradualist and catastrophist arguments.

The final part is one chapter covering how dinosaurs are portrayed in the media and how they are perceived by society.

Although the book had many authors, the quality is uniformly excellent. I generally liked the selection of topics. I wouldn't consider this an entry level book, but it's definitely readable by non-experts, I enjoyed the level of detail.

Inconstant but really great

This book is very dense and covers almost anything related to dinosaurs. It is clearly intended to non-pros but it does not lack scientifical value. However, because the book was written by many authors you'll find some chapters less well written than others and some information is duplicated. My advise is to not hesitate to buy this as your first dinosaur book.

Outstanding introduction to dinosaur science

Do you want to get "into" Dinosaurs? This is the place to start. The Complete Dinosaur is a comprehensive introduction to what is currently known about dinosaurs and how it is known. From the history of the earliest fossil hunters to dinosaur biology, paleogeography and even an overview of dinosaurs in the media throughout the years.
The book is organized into chapters, each of which contains a deep look at its subject and yet is perfectly readable by laymen (such as myself). Even though many contributors wrote for this book, there is a sense of cohesiveness through the entire book. At a massive 768 pages, it is a very long read but seldom does it get tedious except perhaps a few chapters on dinosaur biology that get a bit too technical.
The book contains abundant references at the end of each chapter and a huge index a the end so it serves as a very useful reference on your library.
Other books that compare to this one are "The Scientific American Book of Dinosaurs" edited by Greg Paul and "Encylopedia of Dinosaurs" edited by Phil Currie, both renown paleontologists. "The Complete Dinosaur" is more comprehensive than the first one and is arranged in a more readable format than the second one which arranges its articles in alphabetic order.
The only weakness of the book is its age. Written in 1997 it is probably due to a revision given that the fiels of paleontology has been progressing by leaps and bounds in the last few decades.

Highly recommended.
