This book might mention "God", but it leads children (and adults) to believe they are their own gods. (So why do bad things happen to good people even if they think positive and are "good"? Face it, no matter how much New Age self-help you indulge in, it will not ultimately save you or help you live forever.)

I was given a copy of this book for my kids. Looked benign, but I read through it myself first before reading it to them. It's got a feel-good message to it that lacks deeper wisdom of the REAL world and REAL solutions to the world's problems, even at the close community level. It's dangerous New Age poison packaged sweetly for children. Satan wants your children too, you know. This subtle, seemingly sweet and positive book is a wolf in sheep's clothes.

Everything about this book tells your child, "The world revolves around you." Does it really? People, you do not have to love yourself before you love someone else. The world would be better off if we concentrated on others instead of ourselves. . .

Sure, I want to teach my children they are loved unconditionally and help them to see the true fount from which self-esteem comes, but this book is not it. The self-help, New Age books from this publisher are making someone rich at the expense of our common desperation to find answers and unconditional love.

I threw this in the garbage without showing it to my children. I'd prefer reading some real character builders that entertain and challenge my kids to think and act than read them this oversimplified New Age poison.

Straight in the trash.

It's worth listening to, tho the book's probably better.
I felt a need for some hard, basic psychology (which he's qualified to furnish) to slide a foundational base under the new-age-y things I'd been listening to, or watching.
I sent it to my daughter, who's not such a hard-shelled veteran of the Dyer-esque materials, as I am. It's a good way for us "boomers" to review where we're coming from, before going foward to wherever we're going to, next.
If you lost your old copy of this book, it's probably a good way to refresh your memory.

I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason! This book fell into my lap through an incredible offer from a television home shopping network - one which whom I never pay any mind to. However, after reading and loving "The Power of Intention", which was my first real exposure to Dr Dyer, the message that he would be featured on the show piqued my interest and got me to tune in.

It doesn't end there though. I didn't dive in to the book immediately upon receipt - was I not ready for it yet? Hmmm...

So a few weeks went by and in the meantime I happened to see the recently released movie "The Secret". One word to describe it, "WOW"! I was and continue to be blown away!

So out of the 10 or so books that I had on deck to read, this book "Being in Balance" kind of jumped off my shelf at me - Why? I didn't know, but I pick it up and started reading it.

One by one thoughts and concepts passed on by the author just seemed to resonate with me - Do you know that `popping' sound when something just clicks with you?

This was the quintessential "right book at the right time" for me. It not only solidified some concepts that I just picked up from "The Secret" but it simplified and expanded my understanding of them.

It became even more evident to me that Dr. Dyer is simply tuned in! I'm about to embark on another book by him called "Inspiration" and I'm just thrilled with anticipation!

Will make you think!

I have read many of Wayne W Dyer's books and find them all very inspiring for me personally. It would be difficult to say that any one book of Dyer's inspired me more than any other. That is because each book has touched my life in a very different area. Being in Balance has the special quality of reaching many different areas of ones life in one book. The book flows smoothly through each chapter of the 179 pages. The text is easy to read and the graphics give emphasis to the written thoughts. The size of the book makes it convenient to carry along just about anywhere. The soft texture of the cover I find very unique. Just the feel of the cover extends an invitation to read and explore. Being in Balance is a book capable of contributing to many people interested in enhancing their lives. Because of this fact I use Being in Balance to give as a gift to many people that I personally come in contact with. I hope that it inspires their lives as it has mine.

I was given these cd's by my dad. I didn't give them much thought until I had a long drive and thought the voice would keep my company. 5 minutes into the 1st cd and I was hooked. It was so nice to hear someone encourage me without judgment. Which is something that I struggle with. I began to practise what was said on these cd's and within 2 weeks, all of my struggles seem controlable now. I am a happier person.
It's not some magic trick. The book or the cd won't do it for you. But it was nice to hear someone encourage you to be happy without being ashamed.
I am very thankful I was given this cd and encourage anyone who feels stuck, or trapped, or looking for some relief to at least give these a shot.

This was my introduction to understanding that terrible illness - low thyroid. I recommend this book to all my patients with depression and anxiety, if GP's recognised the role of thyroid in mental illness we wouldn't be so snowed under trying to treat them.
A well researched and written book, easy to understand and broad in its application to all medical and mental illness touched by Hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and Hyperthyroidism.

The biggest challenge after determining that your thyroid is not helping maintain your health properly is convincing your "mainstream" medical doctor to give you the prescription for the supplement!

Low thyroid must be the most overlooked of chronic diseases. This book goes far to correct that. After reading numerous books and articles on thyroid while writing HONEST NUTRITON, I found this one clarified the issue well. It is the best for information, as well as easier reading. I only wish Dr. Dyer had used a more relevent title. This book is about thyroid disease and complications of this problem, and it does solve the riddle of some illnesses.

The author presents the clear connection between hypothyrodism (improper activity of the thyroid) and the many seemingly isolated diseases (arthrisits, cancer, diabetwes, obsesity, hear disease, fibromyalgia, sexual problems, and many issues of memory, mental and emotional deficiencies and consequent behavior patterns. The author supplements the evidence and remedies (e.g., vitamins A,B compex, C, D3 and other iodine, zinc, coper)with case histories and research conducted over the years, as well as the consequences of those medics who misdiagnose and mis-apply corrective medicines. This is one of the more comprehensive and effective books.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism may be caused by one of the two mechanisms. First, widely accepted by modern medical practice, is the inability of the thyroid gland to produce its hormones. This may be due to the primary failure of the thyroid or insufficient production of TSH by pituitary, appropriately called secondary hypothyroidism. Second, virtually unaknowledged mechanism of hypothyroidism is the inability of tissues to properly react to the thyroid hormones. By analogy with type 2 diabetes, this condition has been coined type 2 hypothyroidism. There is no discussion of this phenomenon in the book, and this is its major drawback.

The books lacks focus and attempts to give advice for various problems not only from the point of view of hypothyroidism. In many instances, such as management of obesity, for example, this is done poorly, and that chapter is full of unsubstantiated recommendations. So are many others. I expected more focused discussion of health problems in the context of hypoactive thyroid.

Chapter "For doctors" is more interesting, but pays much attention to the classical symptoms and signs of hypothyroidism, when there is no problem diagnosing this condition. The whole point of the book is to attract attention to the fact that clinical presentation of this disease more often than not is subtle and not obvious.

In summary, I would not recommend this book as the primary source of information on hypothyroidism.

Being the father of three children, I enjoyed reading this book. This book helped me to see many of the negative parenting patterns that years of conditioning had created in my ego. The number one thing that I walked away with was the understanding that my children have to make their own lives (with my wife's and my guidance, of course), and that it is not my place to control them. Wayne also provides ways to help you see yourself and then how to correct any negative traits you possess concerning parenting. While I may not agree 100% with every idea he has regarding parenting, I would say I agree 90% (now that I've read it). I have seen many of my fallacies and have seen how they have affected and will affect my children negatively; I have seen how to change those ways also, thanks to this book.

I believe EVERY parent should read this book, and I've given it to new parents and have recommended it to others. No matter how old your children are, Wayne has written this book for you, now. It's never too late to correct your mistakes and help your children grow to be mature, responsible, creative, limitless adults, and Wayne stresses that in this book. I believe you will appreciate it, therefore, I highly recommend it.

Leitmotif, ancient secret for learning. Dyer's pattern of positive, uplifting behavior is repeated in advice on parenting. Unfortunately most of us didn't have the time or motivation to "seek" during our younger parenting years. I wish there were courses teaching this book in high schools.

Wayne Dyer has brought his widsom and wit to the hard process of parenting with this inspiring but daunting how-to designed to raise "no-limit" children. Sadly, it's discouraging to realize the amount of hard work, discipline and self-control that are required from parents to pull off this challenging protocol for raising kids to be non-blaming, empathetic and self-confident adults. The main precepts tend to be repeated many times, but that's helpful for learning things well. As you might expect, there are plenty of helpful self-improvement tips for adults, who must really be exemplary people to follow the child-rearing advice Dyer gives. It would have been nice to have this book much sooner in my parenting career - now, as a grandparent, I'm finding it difficult to convince my daughter that the Dyer approach is workable. Even if you only adopt a few of his ideas, you will be rewarded, I think, with happier and better-adjusted children.

As the author of Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves, I find What Do You Really Want for YOur Children to be nice, but not on the leading edge. Wayne Dyer is always full of stories and joy which is inspiring. The book is a fine introduction to being a parent who does not follow the old authoriterian ways. If you are inspired, don't stop here. Read other, more up to date books.

For example, Wayne speaks in praise of praise, yet, praise is manipulation. It gives the parents control over the child. The parent uses it to attempt to get a child to repeat a good behavior or achievement or control their emotions. If you read Punished by Rewards, or my own articles about praise and my book, you would know that praise is as bad as punishment and actually harms self-esteem and self-reliance.

Although much is missing in this book, it is also a delight to read from a delightful writer and speaker.

He uses examples from Walden, Thoreau, and other great thinkers/visionaries. He messages are light and easy to listen to in the car or even while you are trying to meditate.
This particular set is a real bargain. I don't feel like I need to purchase any of Dr. Dyer's other CDs since this set comes with 4 of his "classic" recordings. I highly recommend it.

If you're willing to ignore the grammatical error, the title of the book is great. Sadly, the content falls short. Some pages make excellent points about being satisfied with what you have and the importance of ALL jobs in our society. Unfortunately, those concepts are completely blown out of the water with point #4: "You have the Power to Get What You Want". The author encourages kids to dream about anything they could possibly desire and that all they have to do is "believe" that they will have them and they will. He actually uses the phrase "wealth and riches of every kind". The corresponding illustration is a girl putting up pictures of a car, big house, horse, and a purse among other "high-ticket" items. Not exactly the values we were hoping to impart.

Not sure why people have taged this as "religious". I don't believe that any mainstream religion supports this type of thinking or greed.

I so wish I were rich, so I could buy more copies of this book and give away. I buy as many as I can from the used bin. I don't think the money gets back to Kaye and Edwarda when I buy the used books, but at least the message is getting out.
I give the books to friends. send them to those indivisuals in positions's of authority, ie: mayors, politicians, civic leaders, friends and relatives. I highly encourage everyone to buy as many copies as you can and give away. new or used, the money and message gets spread. if you have any doubts as to whether or not this book is this good, at least buy one copy for yourself and read it.

There are so many good things I can say about this book, but what I have been thinking about since I read it, is when I see the news talking about Mrs. Schiavo's ordeal...After reading about Edwarda and her mother, Kaye, I was truly overwhelmed at the thought of what one person would do for another. I am a mother of 3 boys and I would do anything for them. Maybe after reading about Kaye doing what she has done for her daughter, only reassures me that beautiful, very selfless miracles do exist and I am more sure I could draw strength from this.

At first, with the Schiavo case, I thought it was rather selfish to keep someone alive who really didn't want to be...Then after reading Wayne Dyer's book about Edwarda & her mother, I re-thought my options, mainly determining that nobody on this earth has the right to declare someone's life over, unless it is written out somewhere by that person, and even that is questionable at this point. I think God is the only One who has this say in such a manner.

I'm so glad that Kaye had not given up on her daughter and that she has basically told the rest of the world that she is here to do this for her, at whatever cost, and without concern of what other people think about how she's going about doing so.

I only wish there was a way to find out the current status on this story...How do I find out where things stand? If someone knows, please update me...I would appreciate that.

I, like I am sure everyone else who read this book was deeply touched. My respect for Kaye was imeasurable thinking of all the sacrifices she made. I can honestly say the only other mother who may surpass her is Jean Ellison. (One mother, One Daughter, One Journey by Jean and Brook Ellison)Jean Ellison not only does what Kaye does, but her daughter, unlike Edwarda is paralyzed from the neck down since she was 11 years old.You may have heard that her mother attented ALL HER CLASSES from 7th grade to senior year in Havard. I was a little troubled by reviewer Patricia had stated. The first being a very valid question, if Wayne Dyer is such a good friend and a multimillionare then why not set up a trust? It is a valid question. Yes I know that the proceeds from the book go to Kaye Obara, but after books are read they are resold and that money goes to the original buyer, Kaye Obara does not receive that money.Secondly, what I found troubling was the statement that she (the reviewer Patricia ) had lunch with Kaye and indicated she was not a sweet, soft spoken person. She further states she will not elabarate, but I wished she had. Is this kind of scam? Did Patricia mean that she was just a stronger person than she thought, but then states not is always as it seems. I now hesitate to donate anything as this has me wondering. The book was beautiful, but this review troubled me as this person actually met someone from the story and did not seemed impressed.

After Wayne Dyer (of whom I am a big fan!) wrote about this woman and indeed, wrote this book with his wife, I was curious to read it. Even though after reading the summary of it, and looking at Edwarda O'bara's website, I had some questions.

Anyway, I did not find this inspirational at all, and quite honestly, I think that Kaye O'Bara has made herself into a martyr. Having worked as a nurse, and done homecare with patients, I cannot for the life of me figure out why she has had to sacrifice so much to keep her daughter alive. Never leave the house? Feed her every two hours? Please, give me a break.

There are these very commonly used devices called feeding pumps, and they are very sensitive, and can deliver as much or as little food as you want per hour--they are used on premature babies and can deliver as little as 1 cc an hour for heaven's sakes. So why isn't Edwarda on a feeding pump at night? Why is Kaye sleeping only 90 minutes at a time and feeding her daughter every two hours? Sorry, but even the most brittle diabetics do not have to be fed that often. And with a feeding pump, she can sleep all night and keep her daughter fed.

Now, she feeds Edwarda every two hours round the clock. Why? What person, even a diabetic in a coma, needs to eat that often? Again, if Edwarda's metabolism is that unstable, the feeding pump would work wonders. And why does she need to check her blood sugar and give insulin every 4 hours? Diabetics generally don't set their alarm clocks in the middle of the night to check their blood sugar. You would think that after all this time, and with the same routine, Edwarda's schedule would become routine and she could go through the night without insulin. And there are also insulin pumps which can keep blood sugar stable. Sorry, Kaye, but you know that it is quite possible for you to sleep through the night--or at least, 4-6 hours at a stretch.

And her visions of Mary? Well, I am a believer in apparitions and I do believe that saints, Jesus, Mary, etc, have appeared before people. However, I think that Kaye is hallucinating from exhaustion, and has in her mind that Edwarda is somehow "blessed" and that she has a divine mission.

Kaye's decision to keep Edwarda at home is certainly noble, and she says that is because she made a "promise" to her daughter never to leave her. Uh, I highly doubt that this is what her daughter had in mind. When she fell ill, she was undoubtedly frightened and made her mother promise that she wouldn't leave her alone, probably referring to leaving her in the hospital by herself! I think Edwarda would be horrified to see how her mother has martyred herself on her behalf, on the basis of words uttered by a frightened teenager. Kaye has taken these words to mean that she is supposed to sacrifice her life so that her daughter (who I believe has long gone from this realm)will not be "alone."

Kaye keeps insisting the Edwarda is going to wake up, but its been 37 years. I think it's time to face reality, and maybe enjoy what time she has left in her own life. Sorry, but I found this book extremely depressing and Kaye to be a little unbalanced and she needs to let go. I'm not talking about allowing Edwarda to die, but to place her in a hospice or long term care facility, and maybe spend some time with her other child who she has grossly neglected for the past 37 years. Take a walk on the beach, go to church, sleep all night. She can visit Edwarda everyday and make sure she is being taken care of, she has sacrificed enough of her life, and as I said previously, I am sure that this is not what any daughter would expect from her mother.

I'm glad that I took this out of the library, as I would not recommend it to anyone.
