This book delivers on the title. Both John and Carolyn have had an amazing experience together with the Lord. From cancelling disability checks to ministering in foreign countries, I find that they're journey is worth reading. There are an abundance of testomonials, in fact, too many to deny significance. Anyone that reads this book, will feel the same. Good Reading.

The perfect book for breaking down religious barriers
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-06
It seems as though everyone goes through a period of questioning their spirituality in life, and for me it started shortly after college. This book is perfect for anyone going through a similar situation. Gregory Huth addresses some of the paradoxes in the bible I have always felt needed further explanation, and he does it in a manner that does not contradict or offend people of various religious backgrounds. In fact, he highly stresses the importance of looking past religion into the deeper aspects of being spiritual and I couldn't agree more. After reading the book I feel more secure in my personal spirituality and can more fully appreciate the different spiritualities of those around me. I would whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone who considers themselves even remotely spiritual and especially to those who are searching for the answers to some of the questions that cannot be answered by simply attending church.

The new standard for an Ayurvedic textbook
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-06
Ayurveda and its principles have been gradually becoming more
accessible to Westerners over the last thirty years. During this time,
a few books have appeared by Westerners on the topic offering an
overview of the field, a few have described materia medica in
Ayurvedic terms, and a few texts from India may be available. To date,
however, there has not been a single comprehensive textbook on the
topic written for the Westerner, by a Western clinical practitioner.
Todd Caldecott's book now fills that gap, and also corrects some
common misconceptions about Ayurveda.
Ayurveda was a dying medical system in India by the turn of the
twentieth century, preserved in a few family lineages in South Asia,
but largely supplanted by British colonial medicine and, in parts of
India, by Unani Tibb. After Indian independence in 1948, there was a
resurgence of interest in this traditional national system. The
resurgence unfortunately was not based on the extant thin lineages of
clinical practice, but on books, and filtered through the lens of a
sometimes-fundamentalist approach of twentieth-century Hinduism. Two
aspects of the resurrected Ayurveda as taught in North America are at
odds with the authentic original tradition. First, original Ayurveda was not a vegetarian system, contrary to common contemporary practice in North America. Second, the pulse diagnosis system in Ayurveda does not
differ essentially from the Chinese system. Caldecott, who was trained in a legitimate lineage in India, practices now in Canada, and supervised a teaching clinic there for some years at the Wild Rose College in Calgary, has corrected these distortions. This is not just a philosophical consideration. Fewer than 3% of the North American population adhere to a strict vegetarian diet, and insisting on this as the ideal diet, besides contradicting core original Ayurvedic literature, essentially rules out benefit to much of the other 97%. Caldecott's text shows how the broad principles of Ayurveda can be applied in the social and dietary realities of 21st century North America.
The book has everything you would expect in a textbook of humoral
medicine: theory, constitutional considerations, dietary and lifestyle
considerations, pharmacology and pharmacy, pathology and disease,
clinical methodology for assessment, therapeutic methods, a materia
medica of the fifty most important Ayurvedic herbs, and a formulary.

A disturbing account for souls belonging in religious organizations
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-22
This compelling book is divided into 4 books. Book 1 deals with Mahamuni Babaji. Book 2 deals with Lahiri Mahasay. Book 3 deals with Masters of the Original Kriya. And last but not least, book 4 deals with The Master and Disciple.

The main theme of this book is that one should only receive Kriya Yoga from the LIVING lips of a true Guru. The tradition of a Guru teaching the disciple and having a PERSONAL relationship with him is the proper way. This means that receiving the techniques through mail or from mass initiations is not the true and proper way. This is a very disturbing statement to Self-Realization Fellowship members in general because most of them have not met Paramahansa Yogananda personally in this life. Moreover, the author presents Yogananda (the author of Autobiography of a Yogi) in a less than praiseworthy light.

The author basically states that Yogananda had violated the injunctions not to start organizations around the Kriya teachings by Babaji and Lahiri Mahasay. These two divine souls have stated that the Kriya teachings should be kept strictly secret and is not to be disclosed to the general public. The author claims in this book that Yogananda had broken this sacred rule.

In conclusion, it must be said that this book will be a very disturbing account to SRF members and other members of Kriya Yoga organizations. I will strongly recommend this book to souls who are willing to investigate the real meaning of Guru-disciple relationship and not to those who are fixed in their views about religion and religious organizations. In short, this is a very disturbing book to narrow-minded individuals.

Excellent beginner book. Clearly writen and illustrated. The only thing that I would have liked to have seen would be some photos of more advanced work for inspiration to go beyond the simple projects provided.

Perfect for this absolute beginner

Often, there is a disconnect between the author of a beginner's craft book and the reader, and the techniques and projects offered are beautiful, inspiring, but frustratingly not-so-simple. (Or, less frequently, the projects are simple but uninteresting and dull.) This book contains several projects that not only look do-able for someone looking to complete their first batik project but are also inspiring, pretty, and useful. The book includes a short history of batik and a useful explanation of common equipment and equipment alternatives. Highly recommended for beginners like me!

A Christian can still feel beat up by life...

What an encouragement this book is! Why settle for simply getting through life's hard trials, when you can overcome them in Christ? If you are facing trials and trouble in your life as a Christian, and you are getting weary, this book is for you! The author not only knows her Bible, has overcome real problems in her life, but she also constantly encourages the reader to go back to The Lord for His personal right-now word for guidance. In her words, "There is a word from The Lord, even in the center of a storm. Sometimes the word is STAND (Ephesians 6: 13-14), sometimes the word is FIGHT (1 Timothy 6:12) and sometimes the word is TAKE FLIGHT (Matthew 2:13-15). After we hear from God we must ask Him to provide us with strength to follow His command. Surviving the storm is unlikely if we attempt to do one without the other." That advice alone may be enough to get you through the storm to the other side... Then what do you do? Read the book.

Review Date: 2004-04-13
Mark Bego's updated biography of Bette Midler is THE BEST of the lot! I assure you, as an avid BetteHead, I have read nearly all works concerning Miss M, but THIS one is tops! One of the main reasons I like it so much is that it's, well, REAL. Bego recognizes her fiery talent, her zest, her zeal, but he didn't try to make her into a saint, as many others have tried. (And let's face it, who can picture Miss M as a SAINT?) Instead, we see a beautifully crafted portrait of a woman who is, indeed, Divine, but, also human. She's made mistakes, loved the wrong guys, gotten bowled over...but she always gets back up, better than before. Follow Bette's journey in this book, all the way from the Baths to Bette! (the Lucy-esque sitcom). And, as always, be prepared to take a joke!
