It took me on a journey that I didn't expect and I came away from the story wanting to read it again to get the full measure of what was being told! I can't stress enough how well written and honest this story was. They held no secrets back and put it out there - no question that God has held them in His care and allowed them to share their story. Buy the book and tell everyone!!

A Divine Addiction is truly an amazing read. I was deeply inspired by the principal characters within the story, Dorty and Koddy, spiritual beings who had the courage to go deep enough within themselves to explore the complexities of love and what it truly means to be human. Their lives, encompassing the choices that were made to challenge their own and each other's heart, the steps that were taken to remain true to themselves and the bigger journey begun toward self-realization, became mirrors, each reflecting a lesson of truth: Even if we close our eyes to the dream in our hearts, it will manifest itself within each of our realities. This book helped me to further realize the truth within my own heart.

Jim Laffoon hits the bullseye with this tremendous literary work. He nails down how the coming Revival of Apostolic Ministry and the Five-Fold Ministry will come to pass with his explanation of how apostles and prophets are to relate biblically. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to line up scripturally as to be ready to recieve the coming restoration of the TRUE Church of God!

Arndt's beautifully poetic translation overcomes a common problem among translations of the Divine Comedy, that you cannot read it as a poem but only as a kind of encyclopedia, full of painful details. Arndt allows the knowledgable reader to read this most marvelous of poems in a real way, with delicate breath and smoothness. His excellent combination of Dante's Italian terza rima with English's natural iambic pentameter is truly masterful, and it allows the poem to be read in a deep way, not the somewhat superficial way that most translations allow, even those which proclaim to be poetic but are actually nothing more than chopped-up prose. At the same time, however, Arndt's informative introduction and extremely helpful notes allow a reader to examine the text closely. This edition is, to me, the most satisfying of the four editions of the Divine Comedy I own.

Marvelous translation of Dante's classic in beautiful poetry

Arndt proves himself a master of both poetry and language with this stunning translation of Dante's classic "Divine Comedy." His poetry is not only in perfect iambic pentameter and terza rima, but his translation captures the true essence of Dante's work -- both the torturous agonies of Hell and glorious ecstasties of Heaven. An absolute MUST for any fan of the great Italian poet

This is a fantastic edition of the Inferno. It is the 1st time I've ever read the Divine Comedy besides excerpts attempting to ape the terza rima. While such exerpts are gratifying the way a 3rd generation video tape of a movie may be, it is far more fullfilling to read a 'literal' representation of the Italian text in English and then frame that within the borders of the original Italian. Singleton's notes are also exceptional and lead to a very complex reading of the text. In short, for someone who cannot speak a word of Italian but wants to have the richest reading of the text, from language to content to the culture the poem draws upon, this is the text to purchase. When I complete the Inferno I plan to complete the rest of the Dante's masterpiece with Singleton holding my hand.

CHARLES SINGLETON's translation of Divine Comedy

I capitalize CHARLES SINGLETON because amazon.com pile their customer reviews into one long list, admitting no differences between translations. SINGLETON's very literal prose best serves the reader who would read the original Italian, and clarify his reading by referring to the facing English translation. You needn't have studied Italian for this, though some skill in another Romance language is very helpful. But if you insist on getting your terza rima secondhand, read Pinsky's Inferno(Pinsky has yet to bring over the Purgatorio and Paradiso).

This audiobook is a remarkably good addition for the individual who enjoys good literature well read. Superb production values, an excellent reader/actor who imbues the material with accurate intonation and enunciation, cadence, and modulation, makes this one a gem. If you are spending your money wisely, you cannot go wrong with this NAXOS production. This one will be listened to many times. I even purchased the translation in hardcopy to pay closer attention to the reading.

Wonderful Performance

Review Date: 2006-05-14
This is a wonderful performance of the entire Divine Comedy which one can listen to many times. The reader, Heathecoate Williams, must be some sort of an actor -- full throated furious at times, pale and poignant at others as he wends his way through it all, mimicking all the saints and sinners like a mockingbird. Each of the 100 cantos is prefaced by a short suggestion of period music for a breather and for atmosphere, which does not intrude or ham up the performance, as often happens with similar efforts.

Shameless drama of Williams' variety may be embarrassing to some, out of style to others. But it supplies an important element lacking to the rather dry academic fashion by which most are these days exposed to Dante. Nor is any accuracy of meaning sacrificed thereby. The three parts of the Comedy are all read from a prose translation by a man named Benedict Flynn. I am not aware that this translation is available anywhere in print, but having read several English translations of Dante, the word choice is familiar and sounds properly middle of the road. Truth be told, a dramatic flair does no disservice to this very personal poem at all, which was radical in its day for being written in common vernacular. For the hearer of our language, it places Dante in the ring where he belongs: with the fully engaged Shakespeare of the history plays, not with the closet dramas of a T.S. Eliot or a Robert Lowell.

The set is well worth the price, and the bonus disc lecture on Dante's life not only adds the academic dimension, but makes the price for the whole a steal.

A fantastic book on the subject of animal mummies in ancient Egypt. It is written by some of the top Egyptologists in this field of study and can provide huge amounts of information on all that you would want to know about this ancient practice...from the reasons behind animal mummies (why they were scared etc.), the actual process of making them and the areas where these votive offerings were placed (i.e. holy sites such as Saqqara, Tuna al-Gebel and so fourth). It's a highly academic book and perfect for all Egyptologists out there or those who immerse themselves in the study of ancient Egypt. There are a number of beautiful picture within the book as well. Overall, it's a wonderful book!

An excellent book by a professor of Egyptology at the American University of Cairo. It deals with all the reasons why animals were mummified in ancient Egypt, why these mummies acccmpanied their masters into their tombs, and also the hoaxes that were sometimes perpetrated on unsuspecting pilgrims who thought that they were actually purchasing mummies of animals to offer to the gods. Salima Ikram is the leading authority on the subject of animal mummies. She has written widely on the subject, lectured on it at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the British Museum in London, and several other well-known institutes, and appears frequently on TV (I have seen her on the Discovery Channel, the History Channel, the National Geographic Channel, etc, etc.) She has established a room for animal mummies in the Egyptian museum in Cairo, the first of its kind in the world.

The Divine Dance confronts issues of image, integrity, dating, family relationships, friendships, and maintaining a personal relationship with Christ in an eloguent and upfront fashion.

Using the analogy of life as a performance, Shannon Kubiak accurately paints a picture of the pressure facing young women today.

I it a must read not only for young women but women of all ages!

I couldn't put it down. I read it in one sitting. I recently read it again! I highly recommend it!

Divine Days is as beautifully written as it is challenging. It is massive, complex, and wonderful. Leon Forrest is truly one of the great writers of the 20th century. History may look back and place Forrest in the Canon along with the likes of Ellison, Faulkner, and Morrison. On the other hand, the book may continue to be overlooked. Either way, do yourself a favor and read this book. You'll be glad you did.

This is simply an excellent book. Very well written and inspiring. During and after reading the book, I felt my own divine desperation. I appreciated the author's transparency and honesty. He and his family certainly faced gut wrenching problems as their missionary career spanned the globe. God's faithfulness shines throughout. A must read.

Wow! So inspiring. Just what I needed.

This book was exactly what I needed. The title hit home "desperation" was precisely what I felt when I picked up and read and it's helped me to stand back up and let God be God. The book is written in a way that we not only have a glimpse into the life and ministry of the author and his family, which is interesting -- but also a clear view into how God works. So matter-of-factly, Dr. Hurston shares fantastic miracles he witnessed and/or experienced; so matter-of-factly he reminds us that it's all about God, all about Jesus, all about the Holy Spirit and we are just to obey and get out of the way. So simple and yet so easy to forget - it's good to be reminded. Thank you Dr. Hurston for taking the time and effort to put your life and wisdom into book form so that the rest of us may grow and learn from you. Thank you!

Divine Discourse: Philosophical Reflections on the Claim that God Speaks

A thoughtful mix of philosophy and devotion
Helpful Votes: 35 out of 35 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-16
Divine Discourse is a philosophical and theological treat. It offers a philosophical exploration of the devotional reading of scripture. In so doing, it unveils the conceptual, epistemic and interpretive obstacles that one faces if one believes that God spoke and perhaps continues to speak through sacred texts. Like most of Professor Wolterstorff's books, it is a first word rather than a final word on a thought provoking topic. It begins a conversation and encourages further discussion. In Divine Discourse, Wolterstorff takes up three important philosophical topics, viz., divine revelation, philosophy of language and hermeneutics. The opening argument of the book is that the Bible should be understood under the rubric of divine speech, rather than divine revelation. This argument is followed by an analysis of divine speech in light of the speech-act theory of John Austin and John Searle. Such an analysis attaches significant weight to the role of the speaker or author in fixing the meaning of a speech-act or text. Since this is not an uncontroversial position in contemporary philosophical discussions of interpretation, Wolterstorff devotes a couple of chapters to answering criticisms from two of his more important critics, Paul Ricouer and Jacques Derrida. The remainder of the book takes up a variety of interesting hermeneutic and theological issues that arise from the fact that the Bible is both a divine and a human product. I would recommend this book on the strength of the opening discussion of Augustine's conversion experience alone. For anyone interested in the philosophical and theological issues surrounding the nature and interpretation of the Bible, this book is worth a careful read. For anyone interested in the impact of philosophy of language on hermeneutics, Divine Discourse provides important food for thought. And for anyone who is weary of the traditional disciplinary lines separating theology from philosophy, hermeneutics from the philosophy of language, or Anglo-American from contemporary European philosophy, this book will provide a welcome and refreshing change.

A seminal work of philosophical theology

Wolterstorff delivers a carefully argued defense of the claim that God speaks today. This book would be an interesting read for those who might doubt whether God does indeed actively interact with humans today. However, the seeker might be frustrated by the fact that the argument is based upon the assumption that God does indeed exist. Overall, the precise argumentation and the unusual subject make this book a real gem.
