This book is challenging, heartening ansd inspiring. It takes us to the core issues of violence - the damage done to both women and men by the centuries of patriarchy and unequal and damaging relationships. It also offers a blame-free, compassionate way for men and women to meet, acknowledge their pain and find reconcilliation and healing.

This is a wonderful, healing contribution to relations between men and women. What could be more needed now as we try to bridge the centuries-old gap in understanding between the sexes at home, in the office, in the world? I took the whole weekend to read this, I could not put it down.

This book takes a refreshing look at the topic of gender from a spiritual but not religious perspective. It is also not a theoretical focus but a report of actual transformative processes and individual stories of how this group work has been used internationally to heal the wounds that we have all encountered based on gender. It embraces and synthesizes much of what has been written and practiced and has a hopeful and healing message that we all need to hear.

I have just completed reading The Divine Embrace for the second time. As with Ken's other works, The Divine Embrace is filled with nuggets of truth which go right to the heart. Ken uses the metaphor of dance in drawing us to live a connected life with Jesus Christ. Each chapter is filled with creativity, challenge, and suggestions for being more like Mary in a Martha world. The conclusion opened my eyes to a new way of seeing my relationship with Jesus. I will never look at my life with Jesus the same after reading such impacting words.

All I can say is, "Wow, Ken Gire!"

Profound Simplicity

It's nice to realize that we have a ready aid to help us handle all the problems and obstacles we seem to have to deal with regularly. This simply written book is deceptively easy to read--- but I found myself re-reading passages over and over, and discovering deeper truths each time--- not more complicated, but richer and richer information. The idea of living life with the expectation and understanding that our creator is a part of us, and always at hand with a word to assist us in choosing, a nudge to take action, or a gentle restraint from action, was novel. And life-changing. Came along at just the right time for me, but imagine it comes along at every one's "right time!"

I have always wondered why life seemed so difficult, with one lesson, one problem, one crises after another. And I wondered, too, and why good, fruitful decisions were so hard to make. Then I came across this book, and I realized what had been missing! I had been trying to do it all on my own, without ever once realizing or knowing that there was help available to me, in the form of God's Divine Guidance, that could help me make my important life decisions in such a way as to avoid most of life's difficulities. This book gave me not only the information I needed, but also the tools to make use of it. Now, thanks to Dr. Overton's wise words, my life is free, easy, and happy!!

The author, Dr. Jerry Overton, skillfully outlines the various ways we receive divine guidance and how we can more fully accept and trust in this gift to achieve greater abundance and effortlessness in our own lives. The stories of how divine guidance has helped people overcome tremendous challenges are heartwarming and inspiring. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to live a more abundant, meaningful and joyful life.

A map for understanding your journey

Review Date: 2003-04-29
I have felt pretty successful in my life. But like most humans on this planet I have had intervals of extreme struggle and grief, including the death of a parent, turbulent relationships, divorce, personal financial issues and everyday disappointments and loss. I have always believed that there were forces at play in my life that were both beyond my control and out of my reach of understanding. I believed that the experiences I've had and the lessons I've learned were purposeful--and the purpose was my growth, my personal work to accomplish in this lifetime.

I have also incorporated different elements into my spiritual practice such as mediations, readings and prayer, and I have believed that getting in touch with my "greater good" would enhance my peace of mind. But I could never quite put my finger on why I was facing over and over what seemed to be the same life lessons. Why was I having the same outcomes? It seemed as if in some way I was like a student who keeps retaking the test she flunked the first time. Can I never seem to get certain things right and move on to bigger and more fun challenges? I sought out ways to find my path, including therapy and self-help seminars, and yet some of the same messages and lessons just kept reappearing. And though those lessons often reappeared in different forms, the content always seemed to be the same.

Then I come across Dr. Overton's book. This is a man trained in a traditional theological seminary (Perkins School of Divinity at Southern Methodist University) but who has anything but a traditional Christian view of life. Here was finally a book that laid wide open the meanings of those nudges, inklings, and messages I'd been glimpsing for years in mediation and prayer--the ones that I often disregarded as my personal "paranoia" or my fears of failure. Overton gives context and meaning to why the lessons keep repeating. In fact, he provides very simple and easily implemented strategies for "getting the message" and moving on.

This is a small book with a BIG message. It provides a context for me as a human being to understand the greater forces at play in my life. It gives me a basis to understand the meaning of those seemingly "small voices" within that urge me to take certain actions, or not. Overton writes in a style that makes you feel you are sure he is sitting next to you on a park bench or talking to you over a cup of tea. The book is subtle, sweet, and has so much depth of content that it invites a revisit--to reacquaint yourself at every new life change with the insights that will inform your journey.

It is one of those books that I will give to both my sons; Overton's practices and principles are so important that I would want both my chidren to have this information in their "toolbox" of life. In these turbulent times this book is a major contribution to the expansion of my spiritual life. It has and will continue to be a significant contribution to my "work." I 'm likely to buy 10 copies of this book and give to all my friends. Formost, this book has been a gift to myself.

"The care with which Michael Stebbins has exposed Lonergan's method and its results...makes Lonergan's sometimes cryptic remarks accessible to all those who have the stamina to explore these issues, and so leaves both philosophers and theologians without excuse for attending to so demanding a synthesis."

From: The Thomist, 60, 1996, pages 484 - 488

"In my judgement, this book is wonderfully accurate as an account of Lonergan. Stebbins analyzes and synthesizes with great skill. In his treatment of the operations of intellect (in chapter 1), right through to his concluding remarks about Lonergan on actual grace (in the latter half of chapter 8), he is extremely sensitive to details and distinctions that others often overlook or misunderstand. Moreover, he not only explains accurately, he clarifies. He understands the material so thoroughly that he is able to link Lonergan's claim in fresh ways, offer original examples, and thus teach the reader what Lonergan really is getting at. Given the challenging technical character of the material, this is a stellar achievement."

"I deem the book to include features of interest to systematic theologians in general, historians of theology, philosophers of religion, metaphysicians generally, persons interested specifically in Lonergan, and persons interested specifically in Aquinas. I commend it to them all."

a clear and complex critique of _De ente supernaturali_
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-10
Stebbins provides a synthetic interpertation of Lonergan's writings on the doctrine of grace from the late 1930's until about 1950. His chief focus is on the unpublished _De ente supernaturali: Supplementum schematicum_ (1946) and on other writings in so far as they illuminate or enlarge the meaning of that central text. S. generally follows Lonergan's development of theses in _De ente supernaturali_, though with two principal exceptions. Chapter 1 focuses on Lonergan's cognitional theory; this tack is strategically important because Lonergan understands internal actual grace as consisting in conscious acts of understanding and willing. Chapter 3 explicates Lonergan's "theorem of the supernatural"; and this move is critical because Lonergan's theorem provides the explanatory framework for his dynamic understanding of the natural/supernatural relationship as it relates to the analysis of grace. Lonergan's theorem acknowledeges a real distinction between the supernatural and natural orders. But he formualtes the distinction in terms of a vertical finality through which lower-level realities enjoy the potentiality for dynamic sublimation by higher-order realities in such a way that the intelligibility of the lower is maintained , even as it is incorporated into the higher order; e.g., the sublimation of the chemical in beings existing on the biological level does not negate the intelligibility of chemical laws. This applies even to the strictly supernatural instances of vertical finality in which human beings are elevated to a created sharing in the divine nature (sanctifying grace) and the human intellect and will are obedientially, passively receptive to such actualing operations as faith, hope, and love of God. These latter (actual graces) at once transcend the natural capabilities of the intellect and will, wihtout negating the laws to which human intellect and will as such are subject. S. rightly conludes that in his theorem Lonergan transcends two-story-universe explanations of the natural/supernatural distinction which end up extrinsically gluing together the two elements. He likewise eliminates the need for adding a third element, such as Rahner's supernatural existential, which is hypothesized to serve somehow as a link between nature and grace in its sanctifying and actual forms. The leitmotif of S.'s work is the interpretation of Lonergan's understanding of internal actual grace. This grace consists in volitional and intellectual activities of the type that cause the occurence of other acts of will/intellect in the same respective potencies; e.g., the movement of the will to desire growth in the love of God causes the willing of a deepening of one's faith. These activities are principally caused in us immediately by God without any excercise of efficient causality on our part; e.g., we find ourselves _moved_ to desire growth in loving God. These activities are derivatively supernatural insofar as we are both _moved_ and _move_ ourselves to the willing of a means; e.g., we choose the means of praying more as a way of deeping our love. In the latter instance we have an example of actual grace as both operative and cooperative. S.'s exposition strikingly reveals the comprehensive, coherent, compelling power and intellectual beauty of Lonergan's synthesis. S. provides evidence that Lonergan underwent a profound deepening in his own religious experience shortly before he wrote _De ente supernaturali_ (334). This may partly explain his stress in that work onthe _conscious_ nature of internal actual grace. S. adds a a pastoral richness to his study in referring to an observation of Londergan in his later years that for some there exists a profound awareness of the divine power at work in them. Others may need to recall their past and its religous high points and movements towards deeper holiness in order to discern the ongoing work of God's grace in their lives (126). Here Lonergan joins Rahner is stressing the experiential reality of Gos at work in our hearts and minds. In his culminating chapters S. brilliantly displays the power of Lonergan's method in its ability to handle such complex issues as the Molinist/Banezian controversies, divine and human causality, freedom, sin, and God's transcendent providence. Lonergan extensively utilizes metaphysical categories throughout his early works. S. correctly observes that Lonergan's late study of grace in terms of intentionality analysis does not basically negate his earlier metaphysical study. Rather, the two approaches validate one another. S.'s overall work is excellent. Only rarely does he leave the reader hoping for greater clarity, more examples. He provides extensive footnotes and a superb index. The judicious user of these sources will discover overlooked observations in early chapters which clarify subtle discussions is later chapters and vice versa. Even the seasoned Lonerganian will find this study quite challenging; yet for the reader who sticks with it the rewards are immense

Another wonderful book from Jane Langton. One of my favorite "cozy" mystery writers. She writes with a decidedly eccentric quirkiness that makes her books stand out from the crowd. Full of irony, and loving touches, her books are 1990's quaint without being old fashioned. She spins a lovely web.

I was a bit reluctant to begin this Homer Kelly mystery - my third (after getting hooked with Escher Twist and then Dark Nantucket Noon). The reason for my reluctance was the subject matter - churches and organists. Sounded boring. I know very little about either of those things and couldn't imagine wanting to learn more.

Well, once I started reading, I couldn't put this book down! I loved the characters (Rosie, Alan, Pip, Charlie, Harold Oates, Barbara Inch, even Debbie Buffington), and I was completely taken by surprise at the end -- yet it all added up so perfectly.

In addition, I must mention once again that the illustrations really add to the book, especially with the look of the organs and the architecture. Because they are created by the author, they give a great insight into her perception as she is writing, yet she never reveals so much that your own imagination of the happenings is affected.

Kudos to another fine mystery by Jane Langton! I will be returning to the library for another Homer Kelly mystery ASAP.

The hero of "Divine Inspiration" is an organist who is "voicing" a new organ just installed in a church damaged by a mysterious fire. He befriends a toddler who is making his way up the steps of the church one day, then locates the baby's home and discovers that the fatherless child's mother - herself an accomplished organist - is mysteriously missing. Our hero falls in love with both the child and the child's mother, whom he has never met except through her photos and mementoes in the baby's home.

Jane Langton's delightful Homer Kelly mysteries are just what the doctor ordered for a rainy afternoon. What makes these books special are, of course, her charming line drawings, her spellbinding plots, and her humor, which has a Dickensian ability to expose the pompous, the greedy, the pretentious. What distinguishes the Langton mysteries (apart from the line drawings) is that you always come away from them having learned something - in this case, all about organs, which was of particular interest to me. "Divine Inspiration" is a divine read.

First person God-encounters

This is a wonderful book filled with awe-inspiring stories. However, that is not what makes it unique. These are more than entertaining stories, they are God-encounters written in each author's own words. They have a reality and immediacy that is lacking in some Christian books. Plus Julia Loren makes it abundantly clear that these testimonies are presented with the aim of encouraging the reader to extend faith for their own God-encounters. As I read these accounts, I get the sense that they are preparing us to recognize and expect His imminent supernatural involvement in our lives.

It's refreshing to read of the very personal experiences of much admired ministers like Dutch Sheets, John Paul Jackson, Patricia King and others. The struggle I have and I'm sure that every Christian has, is that I have a foot in both worlds. Oftentimes the spiritual world can seem so distant. Yet when I read the experiences of Bob Johnson, Matt Sorger and others and then think about my own life, I KNOW that the spiritual world is the real world, this life is a shadow.

Julia makes the point that God is speaking to His children all the time. It's not even that God wants to speak, He is speaking. We don't have to beg God, because like any father, He desires to express His love in words and action. We just have to learn to accept that sometimes He speaks in dreams, sometimes in mental pictures, sometimes through other people. He's just eagerly waiting for us to hear and to engage with Him. I highly recommend True Stories of Heaven Invading Earth.

Sometimes you need to tell a story. But when stories come out that aren't just for entertainment purposes but are true and inspirational, they become even more poignant. And this book has stories about a larger Story, the story of a God who interacts with His people and who cares enough to make Himself known. What better or more exciting realization is there?

The book consists of accounts from lay people, ministers, missionaries and musicians who have found that God is not all about remaining invisible in our lives, but wants to make Himself known in many ways. Some see Him act powerfully in their lives and in those around them, and some see Him act powerfully in their hearts. But no matter what happened, each person never remains unchanged.

More than just a Chicken Soup for the Soul book about miracles, there is no ambiguity here as to the source of these accounts, no beating around the bush. These people have searched for God, and they found Him!

I have read several of Julia Loren's books and really enjoy her writing style. In this book, she invites us to send in our supernatural encounters with God. These testimonies are amazing, uplifting and filled with faith and hope. As I read these true stories of God's intervention into ordinary peoples lives in today's world, each story seems to cause me to say, "Why not me, Lord?" The stories are both hope and faith building. Her editing seems to bring out the "gold" in each of these treasured real life stories.

One of the testimonies that really encouraged me was Phyllis Phaure's story of the healing of her back after failed back surgery and 11 years of constant pain rendering her unable to walk. How many thousands of people could receive hope and be able to say, "Why not me, Lord?" and thus start their trek to see their own back pain disappear with prayer.

Another testimony is Theresa Dedmond's story of how God directed her to paint a picture on a card with a brief transforming message and give it to a young woman whose life seemed lost. This picture and message lifted this young lady out of despair and helped her to encounter our loving God. Again, how many readers of this book will find hope and say "Why not me, Lord?"

Simply put, these stories of "Heaven Invading Earth" will encourage the readers to seek supernatural intervention in their own lives.

I recommend this book,
Ray Smith

This book describes the story how Swami Radha first received this practice from Babaji. It also has step by step instructions how to do the practice. It is a standing meditation which looks quite simple in its format but it can be a profound practice. My understanding of this practice is that it is like a shortcut in realization of the Self. This practice if practiced regulary and with concentration provides us with means to achieve this aim.

Swami Radha says that if we identify with our many different prsonality aspects which are constantly shifting we will stay confused. She also says that this practice can desolve our identification with the body and mind which is quite hypnotic. And if we do the practice with sincerity and diligence it will unable us to realize our devinity. She says that once we accept the concept of Higher Self, or soul or Inner Light, then we should idenify with nothing else but this source. She also suggests that identification with the Light within connects us to the divinity we share with others.

My conviction is that through the use of this practice we can build a spiritual foundation for ourselves in our daily life.

This book is also available in expanded version.

Wether you're interested in learning about the light invocation for the first time or revitilizing your practice please for the good of us all read this again and again. Invigorating every time this is among the top three most worthwhile books I have ever read. When I asked my precious friend Jan why she sleeps with it under her pillow the reply was 'it just makes me feel better that way." and I know what she means. This book is small enough to put in your pocket or purse, but big enough to change your life. It describes how to do a standing meditation practice where you visualize yourself filled with light, then open your heart and see this light protecting and blessing people you care about, or those in need, and even the souls of those who have died. I find the Divine Light Invocation a positive influence, even in events like world conflict, where I would otherwise feel helpless. The practice also helps me stay focused and centered. Clear, simple instructions! I highly recommend it.

This is a reprinting of a historical classic (with added illustrations by the publisher) that was the third bestseller in the world in the early 1900s (after the Bible and Chinese Almanac). It unlocks the harmony of the Bible, revealing scriptural concepts clouded by the religious world today, for example: why God allows suffering; the future role of the Christian in God's kingdom; details about the physical and spiritual worlds; how the "Day of Judgment" will educate rather than alienate; a description of God's plan for peace on earth. Truly a source of hope for this fear-filled world.

God's ways are mysterious, but as an all-loving, all-wise Creator, I believe that He has allowed His creatures that desire to, to know him in an intimate father-child relationship. But looking around in this crazy, war-filled world, one sometimes wonders "Where is He?" and "Why isn't God doing anything to help us if He loves us so much?" This book showed me how to put the pieces in place - by studying the Bible topically instead of trying to read it in order, and by learning that certain principles valid in one time period can't be applied to others. There are so many little clues and treasures in the Bible that easily are missed - but so many "coincidences" that once found, it is easy to believe that the Bible truly is divinely inspired. The timeline Chart of the Ages is especially helpful in deciphering exactly how God has been dealing with man throughout the ages, and what the ultimate plans and purposes are, with the "aha!" reason as to why God permits evil. I recommend the book highly to anyone searching for truth and wanting something firm to hold on to during the "time of trouble" the Bible speaks about. Keep your Bible close by because many, many scripture texts are cited throughout the lessons.

The author is very clear about a number of Bible subjects. He quotes quite a few scriptures and gives answers about a number of topics. He is an understandable writer. We appreciated the chapter on our Lords' return as there are a lot of different ideas about what His return is to accomplish. It's worth the time to read.

Just finished reading Tom Palotas' new book Divine Play: Silent Teachings of Shivabalayogi
The writing style is exciting and terrific. The book is very interesting, inspiring, and attention grabbing. The reader feels so involved that he can't put down the book. It was not an easy job to condense the 900 page resource rersearch notes into a 300 page readable book. But the author Tom Palotas with intense devotion to his spiritual meditation teacher Shivabalayogi, has produced a really fascinating book. Bravo!!!
Tom Palotas really did a great job in putting in all those many beautiful pictures of Shivabalayogi throughout the book. The print, binding, and paper quality is superior to any Indian edition.
You really get tuned into Shivabalayogi's living presence by reading this inspired book. The one consistent theme of the book is to meditate to experience the highest truth within. This book will certainly encourage numerous truth seekers to practice and follow the universal path of meditation.
To read about the life story of a realized yogi such as Shivabalyogi is to catch a glimpse of the glory of God's presence among humanity.

The Divine Play offers a very real insight into the True experiences the seeker derives from faithfully following the self-realised Yogi, Shri Shivabalayogi Maharaj!

I have not known of another book in modern times which offers such a concise and comprehensive account of what it means to be really on the Spirtual Path.

Tom Palotas has evidently been very Blessed by his Guru to be able to write about Him in such a manner that has the reader riveted to the book till all 288 pages of the beautifully bound and well illustrated book has been completely read.

The book reflects Shri Shivabalayogi Maharaj's Teachings in the best possible light that any new or existing Sadhaka or spirtual aspirant will find it an eye-opening experience.

Meditation is indeed the way to reach the Truth and this book i daresay provides an authoritative guide on the Divine Yogi who has made it possible for the multitudes to find It regardless of the Path they follow!

With the cataclysmic changes we are seeing today, which are sure to
accelerate as we near 2012, what can we do to prepare ourselves?
While we are weaning ourselves from gas, electricity and the grocery
store, we need more and more to turn within, to become tuned to the
earth and divine energies. This book is a blessed doorway that not
only tells us what we need to do but how to do it, not just for the
future but for now. A treasure no matter where you are in your life's path.

Sundae Merrick has written a beautiful little book, dealing with...well...everything. Sundae's message is profound, yet simple: everything we manifest in life springs from our connection with the divine spirit, and our awareness that this resides as well within the body, mind and spirit of us all. Sundae's book, Divine Reason & Rhyme, is a manual for just how to do this, and she covers all the angles. Best of all, Sundae has the gift of all great teachers, with her ability to communicate these messages with simplicity, conciseness and inspiration. Every page is a reminder that accessing higher guidance and nature's wisdom can turn life into a joyous and sublime adventure.

I have read your Divine Reason and Rhyme and find it balanced and hopeful. Perhaps we who live in such scientific, i.e.: logic/linear thinking have indeed lost rhyme. Of course Science has gone beyond itself, and is looping back to the spirit. In physics, the unexplainable is called appropriately enough, "magic". And my 10 year obsession with natural history and the origins of complex life has made me believe in spirit again after having Christianity drum it out of me.

A MUST-HAVE BOOK!

I found this book to be enormously inspiring and insightful and well worth the cover price! Sundae Merrick shares her wisdom in a very comprehensive yet easy-to-understand format teaching her readers about the profound ability we each have to change ourselves and to re-direct our energies for positive outcomes. I highly recommend this book. Sundae Merrick rocks.
