delving into the successes brought on by the most eminent enterpreneurial minorities, daniel chirot and anthony reid compile interesting accounts of the hardships faced by the chinese and jews settling in foreign communities. consequently, the editors offer a book which is more than a tedious and detailed narrative; rather, chirot and reid give a rich, sensitive and sympathetic blend of history and personal stories, portraying these "outsiders" with the respect they richly deserve.

What Jesus Said and Did
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-28
In his latest work, Father Harrington shares his conclusions on what current New Testament scholarship "allows us to say with confidence" about Jesus as a historical figure. He presents the basis for these conclusions in clear language accompanied by examples, Scripture citations, sidebars, and questions for reflection. Chapters address such topics as Jesus in relation to the kingdom, prayer, women, and politics; and Jesus' death, resurrection, and second coming.

Harrington begins by comparing the Gospel Jesus and the "historian's" Jesus. The Gospels, our strongest basis for faith, show Jesus as a moral and religious figure, while biblical scholarship places him in his proper historical context "to arrive at a reliable and coherent interpretation of what Jesus said and did."

For example, the chapter on the death of Jesus addresses two opposing views: (1) Jewish leaders sought Jesus' execution, which was merely ratified by the Romans, and (2) Jewish authorities were not involved in any way. Harrington cites Scripture references to support a variety of possible reasons Jesus died; explains historical and theological circumstances that led to his death; and concludes that Pontius Pilate and certain Jewish leaders were responsible for it.

The sidebar discusses the film "The Passion of the Christ" and its portrayal of the role of the Jews in the death of Jesus. Chapter questions ask us to reflect on lingering anti-Semitism related to the Jews' perceived role in the death of Jesus.

This is an enlightening and engaging work suitable for individuals and small groups wishing to enlarge their concept of Jesus' life on earth.

Ungar's book is a wonderful retelling of the Pentagon Papers controversy, from start to finish. It follows the stories of Daniel Ellsberg, who leaked the documents, the New York Times reporters and editors who worked with them (in a secret location, for fear of Nixon's government), and the compelling legal battle that followed their publication, reaffirming some of our most basic First Amendment rights. If you want to read just one book on the Pentagon Papers, this should be it.

My 7 year old (and of course mee too) loves all three of these. He'll actually sit still for hours and listen to them, and race to the CD player waiting for me to change discs. It was dissapointong to see these broadcasts get progressivly smaller with each movie. From 7 in the first, to 5 in the second, and the Return only three CD's long. The last is almost nothing but the movie, with very little additional material. It's still good, but after lstening to A New Hope, The Return of The Jedi feels very short. I would highly reccommend these. They're great for those cold or raining Saturday acfternoons.

A wonderful archeological guidebook to Rome

This book is an English translation of Filippo Coarelli's three volumes on Roman archaeolgy published between 1985 and 2003. It is a valuable guidebook to the historian or to the experienced traveller, especially one who takes the time to examine in detail both ancient Rome and the City of early Christianity. The text is clearly written and the book contains numerous and excellent maps, drawings, in its recreation of the City's buildings, churches, and other structures that are so often featured in histories. This is not a general tourist guidebook but a scholarly archaeological survey of Rome and is probably best utilized in conjunction with a sound guidebook such as The Eyewitness Guide to Rome. The text is divided into useful sections grouped around the major historical sections of the City, beginning with the original city walls, and then (among others) the Capitoline, the Forum, the Palatine, the Colosseum, and other areas including the Aventine, Trastevere, and the Vatican, to the areas outside the City, including the catacombs and aqueducts. The book is an excellent resource for the Church historian interested in the great basilicas and other religous structures of the City. Coarelli's book will serve as a wonderful and excellent resource for years to come.

We originally bought this book for our little boy at Toys R Us and he loved it so much that he broke the spine of the book. The soundstory feature makes this a great way to get a very young child more interested in books in general and that takes him/her one step closer to reading. My boy especially likes the page with the cantina band where he can press the buttons and make the different instruments play. If you have a toddler tearing about your house I give this my highest recomendation!

"The Aramaic Bible" is an outstanding reference work which is indispensible for any serious student of the Hebrew Bible. The Targums were Aramaic translations of the Hebrew Bible interspersed with rabbinic commentary. The Targums, which date to the middle of the first millenium and earlier, provide insights as to how the Jews (and some early Christians) actually interpreted the texts. Until now, it was difficult for someone not versed in Aramaic to have access to these documents; thus the appearance of not just a translation, but a scholarly edition is most welcome.

I used several of these volumes (including this one) in seminary while doing exegetical papers and found them informative beyond belief.

First Readings on Their Own and in Context of Liturgy
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-06
This work is a welcome addition to the archbishop's 2002 "Live Letters," insights and reflections on the second readings. "When God Speaks," offers a similar approach to the oft-neglected first readings for Sundays and solemnities of all three liturgical cycles. In his introduction, Archbishop Pilarczyk reminds us that in addition to illustrating the gospels, the first readings, taken from the Old Testament and the Acts of the Apostles, have a meaning and context of their own. He offers five significant dates from the Old Testament as an anchor for the readings and his own reflections. To further aid readers in appreciating the history of the readings, he addresses five aspects of each.

The context segment fits the reading into the biblical book from which it is taken and also into the days' liturgy; content reviews the original basic meaning of the text; and connection relates the first reading to others in the liturgy. Finally, each reading is discussed in terms of consequences, "What does the reading at this place in the liturgy mean for my life of faith?" Discussion questions follow.

"When God Speaks" is an excellent resource for individuals and groups seeking to deepen their experience of the liturgy.
