This is an excellent book for newcomers to the sport of pure bred dogs. I often give it to puppy owners so they can learn more about showing dogs since it does an excellent job of describing everything you need to know to get started showing. It is well written and has nice photographs. This is even a good start for youth who are interested in showing their dogs. I highly recommend it.

If you have never shown a dog before and don't know what you are getting yourself into this is the book to buy! It even provides a supply list so you know what to bring! If you want to start showing your dog(s) and need to know what to do and how to do it this is one book you MUST buy!

This is probably not the best showing how to book out there but it certainally teaches you a lot without encouraging you to be a snob that cares about nothing but winning at any cost. It covers a lot of material and though it doesn't teach you EVERYTHING you need to know this book combined to going with some other people to a show made me feel confident enough to start showing my own dogs. I have never forgotten some of the things she said in this book. As I go through the dog showing life events can cause her words to ring in my head and bring me peace such as when I meet the occasional meanie "...but keep in mind the meanest people are often the ones with the least going for them." Ain't that the truth!

D. Caroline Coile is a good author. She writes good breeding articles for Dog World all the time and her book Pit Bulls for Dumies, I think, is the most breed-informative of all the "for Dummies" books on dog breeds. I have or have had Labrador Retrievers for Dummies, Golden Retrievers for Dummies, Rottweilers for Dummies, Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies, and Boxers for Dummies, all by other authors, and, blah, I felt like I was reading a general dog care book with just a tiny amount of breed-specific information you could find ANYWHERE in ANY BOOK. I feel like Coile gets more into explaining the essence of the breed in her book.

I am brand new to showing. I just got my first golden retriever. This book was beyond helpful. I am attending conformation classes and this book helped me to understand what was taking place and keep up.
I highly recommend this book for anyone starting out.

This book is an excellent start for beginners. It answered almost every question I had and is very easy to read. I would highly recommend this book.

This has been one of the few excellent books i have ever read. It is actually real, it really happened, so it makes you feel as if this was happining before your eyes. It was sad, and well written. i actually heard David Faber, the author of this book, speak. He was an incredibly powerful speaker, and his book places you in his position, just as his speech does.

David faber visited our high school last week, and had told us about his horrific ordeal during the holocaust. And I was utmost touched and embraced him. I could see those fear he told us in his eyes. And some of us left the auditorium in tears. I recommend this to anyone, because there is a dark side of humanity we taken for granted, and people had suffered more than anyone who had to go through.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Faber as he spoke at the middle school I attended when I was in 7th grade. He spoke to us about his experiences and encounters during the Holocaust that took part in Europe during WWII. Our history teacher read us "Because of Romek" as it was part of our curriculm. I have not been the same since. This is an incredible account of what he went through in keeping of his promise to his mother to stay alive. I would recommend this to a more mature audience being that it does have some parts that are somewhat rough to handle...or so were for myself but overall is an incredible read...as he takes you through his experiences.

This book explains how David's encounter with the Holocaust and yet his story is sad but a good book to read. This is one of the best holocaust memoir I've read! I highly recommended. When I was starting to read the book, I couldnt but the book down...( I ended up finishing the book in 2 days!). I loved it and highly respect the holocaust survivors and of course, David Faber.

Had I thought it was fiction, I would have thought the author went over the top with this farfetched tale. To know that it is authentic is horrifying and at the same time captivating. If you are into the holocaust, then you will find this book absolutely fascinating; and if you aren't a history buff I recommend this book as enlightenment. My utmost respect to anyone that has been through this nightmare. And David Faber my deepest gratitude for having written this book.

If you miss a good manual for your new D 40/D40X, this is the right purchase. It is simple and systematic, and takes you through your camera step by step in a way that is very easy to understand. The last half of the book cover Digital Photografing in general, and it might be practical for a complete beginner. It is not a book about the art of digital photografing though !

Exceeded my expectations, and I had already read the manual cover to cover so I was meant to know most of the capabilities of the D40. Where this book excels is that it tells you how to use the functions of the camera to achieve results, as opposed to just telling you what they are meant to be. The practical photography section at the end is outstanding. Excellent colour example photographs throughout. Very impressive.

This is an excellent guide to the Nikon D40X, explaining all of the functions, camera operating modes, and settings. In addition section 2, is a comprehensive guide on taking great pictures with the D40X, covering all of the essentials, with many examples and tips.

I've been trying to get through the actual manual for almost a year now, it's so obtuse and hard to follow. This book is GREAT and I've begun to love my D40x and appreciate it's many features. What seemed so complicated before in looking at the camera and it's many features has become easy to understand. This book is organized very well and easy to read. Of all the manuals I've read, this one is the first page turner that I've encountered.

This book is great. It gives you a lot of information on the camera, but not just that, it also provides tips and how to apply photographic techniques.
It's a great book.

The sixth book, The Vampire Prince, is great compared to the last two. It's a bit slow, but it picks up a bit about halfway through. I had a little trouble understanding the end, but I have a good enough grasp. As for the end...I'm not sure if I like the decision. But I'm sure there are people out there who feel differently. The next one seems good, and I'm hoping we get to see more of the title! (Cirque du Freak)

The Vampire Prince is about a half-vampire named Darren. He was beaten up by Vapaneze, barely survived a treacherous river down Vampire Mountain, and then was treated by roaming wolves. When he was better, he made his way back up to Vampire Mountain. He was trying to find Kurda, the soon-to-be Vampire Prince, to stop him from tracking all Vampires with the Stone of Blood and killing them all! Darren tells everyone what Kurda is up to, but it was too late.The Vapaneze were after him.There was a big fight between Vampire and Vampaneze.Many were killed,some were wounded.In the end,the Vampires won and everyone made Darren into a Vampire Prince.

The book is good,because it is not boring. The book keeps you interested. It is probaly a book most kids would like to read or understand. It is probaly a book most kids would read,because it is kinda scary. You never know what is gonna happen. Every time, there seems to be a knew problem. The character are vampires, so you would expect there to be alot of action. If you lik action books this is the book for you. But the best part about the book is that it has sequels. So, if you like the book, there are plenty more.

This a great book full of gore and excitment. Darren Shan captures you in a world of horror and blood. VAmpire lovers will love this book. All people thinks about vampires as they turn into bats and suck blood. But, Cirque Du Freaak makes it seem really real and that they do not turn into bts as some books put them. it will capture anyones attention. Get the book, trust me it is great!!!

Darren Shan, a half-vampire, is barely surviving this treacherous river down Vampire Mountain. When he finally stops to a place where the current is slow, he rolls onto his back and he swims toward land. Darren, on his way to Vampire Mountain, meets up with his old pal Rudi. Soon after Rudi howls and Darren is reunited with his wolf friend Streak. One day, Darren sees Mr. Crepsley, Arra Sails, Kurda Smalht, and three other vampires are searching for Darren. After searching all night, the vampires decide to go back to Vampire Mountain. Darren thinks for a while what Kurda might be planning and figures out that he is going to use the Stone of Blood to track and kill vampires when he becomes prince. After Darren finds out, he realizes that he must go back to Vampire Mountain to tell the other vampires about Kurda. When Darren gets to Vampire Mountain, a guardian of the blood sneaks Darren into the mountain undetected. After Darren is actually in the mountain he realizes that if he dies then no one will know what Kurda is planning. Darren then decides to tell his trusted friend Seba Nile. After he tells Seba Nile the story, Seba is outraged and decides that he should do something about it. Finally the investiture began and Seba had men positioned in areas during the ceremony in case any one had a weapon. When Kurda was about to be blooded to become a prince Darren shouted stop and Kurda's men saw him and tried to kill Darren. Luckily Seba's men reacted quickly enough and took Kurda's men out. A while later, Darren finally got to tell the princes about Kurda. It took a while for the princes to agree with Darren, but after a while they finally agreed with Darren and knew that he was not lying. Finally, the vampires went down into the tunnels and had a fierce battle with the vampaneze. One vampaneze took out Vanez's only eye and now Vanez could not see at all and had no eyes. In the end, the vampires won and everyone decided to make Darren into a Vampire Prince!

I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed it partially because Darren Shan is a wonderful writer. In the book he has many descriptions that gives you a good mind picture such as this quote from the book: " Darkness - cold - churning water - roaring, like a thousand lions - spinning around and around - bashing into rocks - arms wrapped around my face to protect it - tucking my legs to make myself smaller, less of a target." I also like this book because there is a lot of action in The Vampire Prince such as this quote from the book: "Its OK," I lied. "It's only a fresh wound, you'll be up on your- " Before I could say more, he coughed. Blood pumped out of his mouth, a huge torrent of it. His eyes widened, then closed. He groaned softly, fell back, shuddered then died."

My favorite part of the book was when Darren was chosen by the Vampire Princes to be one of them! This was my favorite part because I was really into the book and I felt that Darren deserved to be one. I think he deserves to be a Vampire Prince because after he knew that if he went back to Vampire Mountain, he would be killed and he went back just to warn his fellow vampires of Kurda's evil plot.

A few years back, Scott Zesch was doing family history when he ran across a grave of a long-lost ancestor named Adolf Korn. Scott eventually learned that Adolf had been a captive of the Comanche Indians for several years as a boy. After being "rescued," he was always strange, and ended up living his life as a hermit in a cave.

Zesch expanded his research, and the result was "The Captured," a fascinating book about children captured by the Comanches, their experiences, and what became of them in later years. Zesch discovered that children younger than puberty tended to assimilate almost immediately; they forgot their native language (English or German) and even lost their attachment to their mothers. Zesch examines this heartbreaking psychology through his research into the lives of the individuals, which he relates in vivid detail.

"The Captured" is a thoughtful book that both sweeps you up in human drama and leaves you with a lot of things to think about.

My 7th grade Horizons English class enjoyed this novel immensely! We used it as an extension of Texas History, combined as an interdisciplinary unit.

picked up my first copy of this book in Fredericksburg, TX where I happened to be eating some BBQ and looked across the street to see an old settlers outpost fort. I wandered around to check it out and the volunteer guide there showed me the book and said it was an amazing story about a little known niche of our history - children kidnapped by the Indians to re-populate their own tribes thorugh a process of "the strongest will survive and be good warriors" they rode the kids hard and if they cried or shoed signs of weakness, they killed them on the spot, figuring they wouldnt be worth the effort to train and raise. if the kids were able to endure the introduction phase, then they began living life like kings, training to shoot arrows, ride horses, fight, and hunt all day. leaving the domestic chores to the women. nearly all of them eventually were returned or sold back to the white settlers but some refused to go and a number of them ran away and rejoined their indian families.

it reads like an adventure book and proves that real life is better than fiction. the Author does a great job o story telling and is very diligent to accurately reflect true historical data as pulled from historical interviews, military records and newspaper articles.

I have a Great-Great Grandmother who was kidnapped by Indians and taken to Canada. Her story is lost but I wanted to get the gist of what kinds of things may have happened, and why she didn't want to be "rescued". This was just the ticket. Well-researched and written, I really enjoyed this book. It wasn't dry or overly scholarly.

I agree with the other reviewers that this book was a pleasant surprise. Moreso, I believe this book should be nominated for a Pulitzer and a Nobel - and I am certain this will become a blockbuster movie!

Hey, take a gander and read my other 100-plus reviews. For me, Bill Anderson, to be uttering such rave exclamations about a historical account, this must be a treasure! It is. Mr. Scott Zesch has provided a book that really gets into the souls of the abducted children and their captors. He somehow does so with balance and sensitivity and refrains from cliches.

I listened to the audio version twice (bought through audible.com, back-to-back, on my iPOD while driving between job sites in Egypt. The first hearing was problematic due to traffic conditions here.

Hey, dodging microbuses and women drivers here is a bit similar to evading arrows and bullets in the old west! Anyhow, I wanted to listen again so I could commit to my soul my new realization of something I think so many researchers have failed to grasp.

Stockholm Syndrome is perhaps only part of the issue. Just as stem cells seem to adopt the particulars of their surroundings, and just as many wild critters can be raised by other species (and occasionally will suffer a confusion as to their own species), so, too, do human beings adopt those existences (sorry for a bad choice of words here) and become as their custodians, captors, siblings or peers. I realize this seems a bit, "duh, no kidding" but the import goes beyond the obvious. Further, it would seem, that any particular species is apt to more fundamentally accept, or accomodate, that which is least hampered or complicated by rules or regulations. In other words, transitioning toward simplicity is more pleasant than is adjusting to more and more complex organizations or societies.

Precisely such a lesson may be of fundamental importance when establishing any system or organization. Perhaps too much regulation or too complex the controlling body makes routine operation (especially at the commencement) will lead to seeming chaos, disorder and thence lead to revolt and to eventual failure or destruction.

And, too abrupt a change before communication to and fro could shortcut any hopes or dreams of adjustment or transition from the simple state towards the complex state.

Although these observations result from a book about Indian captives, the observations, I submit, apply as well to Iraq, Egypt, (or politics in general) but, more important, to formations of clubs, associations and corporations.

General Motors and Ford seem now to be suffering, partly, from the complexities they created while transitioning from the Great Depression through the New Deal and into the Great Society. all the while, upstart, less complex carmakers in Japan challenged from a simpler standpoint using a simpler vehicle.

And, now that Toyota et al have evolved, they may well be in danger from Hyundai and others.

Anyway, back to Captured. This is probably the best book ever authored about life among Native Americans as lived by children taken by force but who adopted the lifestyle out of love for those with whom they lived. I experienced tears of empathy in listening to Scott's discussion of visiting the cave of his distant uncle or when hearing of the reunion one 'white Indian describe his memory of the demise of his adopted 'brother' brutally massacred by a Texas Ranger.

That, alone, is a significant achievement by Scott Zesch - Bill Anderson.

I can tell when I am reading a book that I really enjoy, it keeps pestering me until I finish it. Read it in 2-3 days!!! Very enjoyable. I even like the binding on this hardcover, large inside margins, etc. Hey Doc, how about writing another book??????

Funny, interesting and well written by a man who has worked hard, accomplished a lot, and is funny.

This was a phenomenal book. Dr. Michael J. Collins wrote an account of his four years as a resident at the Mayo Clinic which reads like a novel. It is at times laugh-out loud funny, other times devastatingly sad. I didn't want the book to end, yet I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend this book. I wish I hadn't read it yet so I could read it again. I hope he writes another one.

The author did a good job keeping our interest and it was very believable.
My 89 year old mother enjoyed it, as did my husband and I.

I highly recommend it. It's nice to know that non-fiction can keep your interest.

Hot Lights, Cold Steel is an intriguing account of the life of a doctor. Written by orthopedic surgeon Michael J. Collins, it is a fast-paced reminiscence of his four years as a resident at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Michigan. Throughout the book, Collins connects the reader to many of his important cases. Told on such a relatable basis, the reader experiences the achievement, thrill, and sorrow that accompany his countless orthopedic cases.

Collins discusses his medical career, describing many orthopedic surgeries in great detail. There is sufficient detail that people with weak stomachs should be cautioned against reading it. He not only discusses each procedural aspect of his work, he also describes the emotions that accompany each victory and especially, each defeat. A major theme throughout the novel is similar to a theme in Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter: humans make mistakes, but nobody is perfect and people learn to forgive. Collins struggles with this reality, recognizing that when doctors make mistakes, people die.

Collins's book isn't all about his career in the hospital, however. He also tells about his ever-growing family and what his being a doctor means for them. Although he relates many pleasurable moments with his family and fellow resident friends, Collins also discusses some of the suffering his family must face until he becomes an attending physician. He especially focuses on the many hardships his wife Patti must endure until he can build up his own practice. Addressing a common misconception that all doctors are wealthy, Collins tells of their poverty, calculating his salary at $2.50 per hour, describing countless "junker" cars, and telling of their near-empty bank account. He is forced to "moonlight" at another hospital on nearly all of his free weekends to supplement his income, which means sacrificing valuable time with his wife and children. Collins enlightens the reader by recounting episodes of his life not only as a doctor, but as husband and father, making the point that doctors are people, too.

For anyone who is considering a career as an orthopedic surgeon, or any medical profession, this book is a must-read. By providing a unique look at the life of a doctor, Collins describes in detail the personal and technical aspects of every surgery as well as his life as a doctor in general. He makes clear just what being a doctor is about, vocationally and personally. Just like an awesome episode of `House', Collins's book will keep the reader interested for hours at a time.

I have read a lot of self help books over the years (I'm over 50) and this is the best one to come out in a long time. If you are at all unhappy with any aspect of your life or ready to make change for whatever reason, this book is a "must read". =)

As I read the case studies in this book, I recognized many of my peers who are in need of the resources that the author provides for developing a renewed personal passion for life. Anyone trying to energize the search for personal direction for the next life stage will appreciate the specific suggestions and examples. I have read this book twice already. Another book that I recommend is" The Five People You Meet in Heaven", and "He Never Called Again."

Her book is magic! Best of all, she is an author who genuinely cares about her readers! An amazingly kind and knowledgable person. Do yourself (and Suzanne)a favor and buy this book. You will absolutlely love it. I am a real fan of hers: you will be also if you read her books.

A dear friend of mine gave me this book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Dr. Zoglio does an excellent job of describing the keys to happiness. Long ago, I independently arrived at many of the same conclusions about happiness, but I have never been able to articulate them as clearly and simply as Dr. Zoglio does in her book. While reading it, I found myself underlining text and writing notes on almost every page. I have subsequently bought my friend her own copy and also bought copies for my two grown-up children with the hope that the book will "tickle" them, too.

I was a little disappointed in this book. I had expected something original and different. It seemed to be a summary of books I had already read. The ideas were good and there was nothing wrong with the book but it was nothing new. I really didn't find one idea that wasn't similar to something I had heard or read before.

I have eaten pretty well since I was a teenager, but when my daughter began to develop acne, we discovered this book which cut to the chase even beyond eating organically. She had already not eaten sugar for about a year when we bought the book, but it was very informative for her and so very inspiring. I have also been eating the diet pretty closely and feel great too.

As was mentioned in other reviews, it was disappointing not to have more menu suggestions and the website only had a very few offerings of recipes. I consulted the Paleo Diet book and although it was a little helpful, there was contradicting information to the Acne book (about sweet potatoes and nuts, for instance) so we weren't sure what to do in those cases. Additionally, Dr. Cordain suggests adding one food group back in at a time each month, but instead of a specific food given as an example, he gives pizza as the example which has flour and cheese together....??? two very likely candidates to cause acne.

I was also surprised that Dr. Cordain didn't even give mention to the fact that there might be a link between the problems people are experiencing with grains and the fact that we are not soaking the grains ahead of time, which breaks down phytates (the part of grains that make them quite indigestible). Soaking grains is an ancient practice as well and might very well help many people have a plant-based source of protein that there bodies can then assimilate.

The amount of protein in ratio to veggies and fruits has been a big question for me about this diet. My daughter seems to want to eat a lot of meat (mostly chicken) and fruit. And she does always seem hungry, constantly foraging.

So, although I can see that this is very helpful and finally provides a scientifically-based explanation for acne, it really seems like there is a lot more to further this research as well as being far from a complete resource. I've had to purchase many more diet books, and search out interesting recipes as the months pass. And that, too, should be mentioned: my daughter has improved skin but she is still getting some new lesions and it has been almost 3 months. A great starting point yet not quite complete.

the dietary cure for acne makes it clear what you may be doing wrong with your diet, and why, and what you can do to truly affect the health of your skin. I purchaced the book along with the paleo diet for athletes 9 monthes ago and have been following the diet fairly stictly, with good results for my skin and outstanding results for my overall health and athletic performance.although this book is a very good overview of the process of acne and a general guideline how and why to change your diet to improve your acne,i would highly recomend puchacing the paleo diet or the paleo diet for athletes. that being said, i also feel if you already have one of those books the dietary cure for acne dosn't offer any new advise and realy would only be useful to understand the prossess of acne, giving one more motivation to follow the paleo diet.Also i feel diet is the most important cure, however in some cases not a total cure. my recomendation for the person truely looking to improve thier overall health would be to skip the dietary cure, purchase the paleo diet and follow it, and purchase The Acne Cure by Terry J Dubrow. however, for a qick read that just may change your life, the dietary cure for acne can do wonders on its own

An easy to follow sensible diet with no special purchases or preparations. And it works! It is the best and most logical diet there is for promoting health and good skin, and you feel better when you are on it. Your body will want to to stay on this diet, and you will save money by not buying junk all the time to eat. Wiley has gotten it right with this diet.

I owe a big thanks to Dr. Cordain for this book. I have an all-too- typical story: suffered from moderate acne for years, been on a medications for years with only moderate results. I quit my medication the day I started the acne diet and since then my skin has steadily improved over the past two months. I have had minimal breakouts, inflammation has gradually decreased, and my skin is clearer now than it has been since pre-highschool.

The diet does require considerable discipline, but I have also seen the other described benefits to my energy levels and general health.

The book is detailed, but easy to follow. My one recommendation would be that it draw a distinction between acne and rosacea. I also suffer from the latter and have had to cut some additional foods in order to see further improvement to my skin.

Overall, this book has been a life-changer!

I have followed Dr. Cordain's work for quite some time now, and have always found his explanations for modern, or western, diseases to be well-grounded and usually quite obvious given the proper framework -- i.e. eating a diet that we are not evolved to eat. The Dietary Cure for Acne continues his excellent work and makes the findings accessible without dumbing down the science.

My mother-in-law gave this book to my kids when they were young and they still remember the story of the little boy and his pet fish. A must for any kids' book collection.

Almost every nite we read "Mr. Carp" as my son calls it. Such a sweet story. I don't even mind reading it 700 times. I take it on vacation too. You'll love it.

This was one of my favorite books as a child and it was my daughter's absolute favorite book as a child.
Every new child in our family gets a copy of this book and it has become a favorite for all of them.

When my son was a little boy, this was his favorite book. He wanted to take it out of the library so many times that I finally bought a copy and gave it to him for Christmas.

My little grandson is two years old and he has 3 goldfish. I thought the book would be appropriate for him -- and he loves it.

I recommend this text for anyone either taking calc for the first time or reviewing after having been away for any amount of time.

This is a very good learning tool: simple language instruction, lots of examples and problems, all with step-by-step explanations.No frustrating 'big jumps'in ether the examples or the problems-the provided answers make absolute sense. Learning never was so much fun.

For a calculus textbook, this is really easy to follow. There is minimal theoretical explanation and lots of examples to help you learn the material. It's been 12 years since I took calculus, and this book almost makes it feel easy! Highly recommended reading for someone going back to school who needs to brush up.

If you're studying calculus, you should read this book first before delving in your textbook.

I bought this and its companion book, Forgotten Algebra, in the hopes of shoring up math skills for engineering and physics classes. This is not a useful book for such. It gets about as far as the chain rule and some simple multivariable stuff, with an emphasis on biz apps. My mistake, the book is likely fine for most readers just wanting a quick refresh of the very bssics.
