A Subtle Commentary

Review Date: 2008-01-30
This is Bob Mills's best book yet, written in his chatty but informative style. Indirectly it suggests that Lindbergh (and the others who followed) were nothing but pawns of the news media and politicos for most of their public life. Lindbergh gets star billing merely because he was the first and greatest victim, and the one who struggled the longest, and perhaps most successfully, to get away.

A gem!

Breezy writing and plenty of savvy observation about the way media creates heroes, and why some make the cut while others with perhaps more noteworthy credentials do not. Far from a stale history lecture, Mills writes in a very engaging easy-to-read style and peppers the books with thought-provoking commentary. This one was quite a find!

Cool View into Londoners Living Their Design Dreams
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-13
Fabulous photos and a tremendous variety in decorating styles make this a fascinating look into the homes of Londoners. *London Interiors* features homes of both celebrities (people like suit designer Ozwald Boateng and one of the Gallagher brothers and his wife) and non-celebrities (including some pseudo-celebrities such as designers and internet entrepreneurs.)

What the people in the book have in common is their interest and ability to use a space to its utmost/ create a space which really speaks to them personally. These folks are all successfully practicing "unofficial" feng shui, wearing their inner creative hearts on their sleeves, er, homes. Many of the photos of the homes and apartments/studio/work-spaces have the owners in them, smiling away. I thought this was a nice touch, because it let me see the face behind the design/living style, and gave a fuller glimpse/view into the personality of the person(s) living there/using the space.

Each (color) portion is foreshadowed by a black-and-white photo of the street/outside portion of the home. An interesting way to say, "you're here, welcome inside," before the color, personality, and personal style beckon and dazzle before you. I thought it was interesting to see that behind the somewhat drab London brick facades, these colorful and multi-faceted worlds existed, normally hidden from view. The next time I'm in London (hopefully someday, sigh, it's such a great city), I will have to make a point to remember all these funky little oases hidden away, and that I've gotten to see them close-up, and vicariously experience going into these homes/studios.

Definetely one to check out -- I found it by chance at the local library, and really enjoyed reading it. For the decorator interested in seeing a large variety of distinct, personal styles, each taken to the hilt. Highlights are the kitsch/color/clutter-filled apt of the man in the leopard skin suit (you'll see what I mean :) ), to the completely opposite almost thoroughly minimalist house, with not a stray speck of color or furniture anywhere (besides the ABSOLUTE basics) -- ie: even the bath is made of slate.... rather, three pieces of it set into a wall -- you can hardly tell it's there or what it is!

It will definetely inspire you to take a new look at the space around you and maybe give you some nudges in the direction of making some design changes. It is a varied and eclectic book, so chances are, you will find one home or idea that speaks to you the most. If not, even seeing people unafraid to take their design ideas and run with them will probably be inspiring in and of itself. A caveat, however, this is not an interior design guide-book or how-to book. It is just a snapshot view into early 21st century life in a living, thriving London.

Since *London Interiors* is one of many products in the European "Taschen" series, there are small paragraphs in italic German and French text translating the larger English paragraphs on each page.

HOMES IN THE EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF COOL

Contemporary London is an extraordinary city - endlessly creative and imaginative, vibrant and contradictory, multiculturally unique, paradoxically sophisticated and iconoclastic, sometimes eccentric, but always intriguing. This book is a window on the private worlds of a handful of Londoners whose homes reflect the city in all its spirited diversity.

Architect John Pawson and wife Catherine's rigorously minimal, utterly disciplined, nearly color-free home contrasts with the lush, jewel-toned environment of clothing designer Ozwald Baoteng. Peter Hone's extraordinary West-London flat is packed, literally up to the ceiling, with priceless plasterwork architectural artifacts, while interior designer Jonathan Reed's Chelsea loft is handsomely kitted out with masculine antique and modern pieces in the natural palettes of stone, wood and leather. Retailer Sam Robinson's Notting Hill flat is a living scrapbook of vivid, cozy femininity and contrasts completely with Rolf Sachs's light filled showcase of contemporary art and collectible furniture.

Not just selected from the expected posh and stylish areas, LONDON INTERIORS shows us homes in up-and-coming, but still gritty Hoxton and Shoreditch, and off-the-expected-path Spitalfields and Hampstead.

LONDON INTERIORS is packed with 450 gorgeous pictures showing the infinite variety of modern London living, and with nary an inch of chintz in sight.

Jane Edwards trained in fashion, journalism and photography at London's St. Martins School of Art but became interested in interior design while living in Hong Kong and South East Asia during the 1990s. She was a contributing editor to Elle Décoration among other magazines and is the author of a book on Asian interior design. Ms. Edwards lives and works in London.

Not only did I enjoy this book, but so did my daughter, and the residents at the assisted living facility I work in. I have now read the book three times; Once to myself, outloud to my daughter, and to an entranced audience of a dozen senior citizens. We all give it five stars.

The author paints a picture of heavenly delight without being critical or using any scare tactics. For being a religious subject, it is handled with such delicacy that even nonbelievers will enjoy the stories.

It answers many questions children have about heaven with such simple answers. From now until eternity I know this will be how I will picture heaven in my mind's-eye, and a delightful picture that is.

Some of the words are large and gave me an opportunity to increase my 9 year old's vocabulary. However the line of the story is very easy to follow. The elders I read to appreciated the fact that it was easy to follow but did not belittle their intelligence.

All of us hope that a multitude of more stories will follow these. It leaves you wanting to know more.

The world would be a better place if everyone would read this and truly believe that good deeds are rewarded with pennies in heaven.

Early 80s fashion fans utopia...

This book is an amazing insight into the New York fashion scene in the early eighties. With so many stars looking fabulous either before they were famous or just as their celebrity careers were about to take off.

Madonna, Debbie Mazar, the B52s, Blondie and Grace Jones are just a few of the familiar faces in the hundreds of personal and candid Polaroid shots that innovative stylist, Maripol took at that magical time and place in fashion history.

I have always said that if i could go back in time to any one time or place in history i would have gone to NY in the late 70s early 80s... this book has only increased my desire.

I would highly recommned this book to fans of 80s pop culture, lovers of 70s/80s fashion and styling, Madonna fans (for the rare Madonna pics) and anyone who ever fell in love with New York.

Great thoughts from well-known people from around the world. I would have liked to have seen more biographical information on each person, though. Great variety. Scholars, writers, artists, and also some award-winning teachers, not to mention many Nobel Prize Winners, Presidents, and World leaders. Can't wait for the next one!

This game is great! Went to dinner at a friends and they brought out this game, we played it for about four hours straight and everyone was ready to keep playing (until we realized it was 1 am and we all had to work the next day)! The game has simple rules, which can easily be adapted to change up the game. I hope they make a booster pack or name game 2, as we almost went through the whole game in one night!

Perfect post-dinner party game!

My friends and I have played this game for years, but we were using scraps of paper and writing the celebrities names down ourselves. This game version is GREAT because there is no chance of repeat names being tossed into the mix, you don't have to wait for the one slow poke friend to cook up 15 celebrity names on his own, and there are THOUSANDS of names in the box so you can play forever without running out of new names. With the celebrity names in this gift version being rated by level of difficulty, you can also play more strategically. I like bringing it as a hostess gift to dinner parties because 1.) I'm a game freak, and 2.) it comes in a compact tin box, which looks cool.

Reviewed by Lori Pascoe for TravelSite.com

If great dishes from the four corners of the world follow some form of cyclical calendar or schedule of popularity, one has to admit that Asian cooking is now the "in" cuisine. Not only does it bring new and exotic stimulation to our taste buds but health and fitness experts also recognize it as a healthy alternative to western diets.

New Asian Cuisine is not simply a collection of recipes but is a compilation of dishes focusing on health and nutrition - from Asia. In fact, the reader is provided with an education on what to eat and how it is to be eaten.

Studies of Asian diets demonstrate that a variety of chronic health conditions found in the West such as heart disease, diabetes and obesity, to name a few, are remarkably less common in Asia. The traditional Asian diet replaces the high fat and caloric content of western diets with high fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and low saturated fat. With the world emphasis on health, there is no wonder world famous chefs are gravitating to Asian cooking for inspiration in the preparation of new offerings. After all, who can discourage a cuisine that provides adventure in taste while inspiring healthier eating?

New Asian Cuisine contains the contributions of many famous and celebrated chefs. And, their dishes range from meat and poultry to fish and seafood as well as salads, rice and noodles, vegetables and, not to be omitted, Asian cocktails.

The true value to the reader of New Asian Cuisine is that here is a genuine reference book that is the product of extensive research into the serious art of Asian cooking by dedicated world famous chefs and not simply a guide to Americanizing oriental sounding dishes.

As a culinary student it's often hard to find a cookbook or resource that I agree with. After opening New Asian Cuisine, I could tell that it would be a valuable resource to have. All of the different dishes have some type of unique characteristic, and in the celebrity chef's preparation, the detailed explanation is amazing. This book is not only great for recipes, but an excellent guide to the flavors of asian cuisine. A Must Have!
