Well okay I'm the author so of course I loved this book! But seriously, it's a positive book about the celebrity world and I don't think anyone has written from that angle before. Also I include excerpts from my column, Dear Miss Know It All, so those are fun to read. Mainly, this is a book about how to cope in a tough job environment and is a good read for anyone with a pushy boss, not just a celebrity diva. We ALL know a diva or two in our world. Give this book a try. You won't regret it! Check out my website too: www.dealingwithdivas.com

This is a delightful book! Shelley has a wonderful sense of humor that shines through, and the anecdotes from her personal assistant career will certainly provide some chuckles for your day. On a larger scale, this book offers some powerful ideas on how to take charge of our lives, regardless of your line of work.

My 2-year old son absolutely loves this book. The poetry and pictures are so engaging that I don't even have to read this book to him anymore--I just turn the pages while he recites the entire book to me instead. The rhymes are so clever!

Each page also taught me something new. A few of the people mentioned in this book I had not previously heard of, such as Nat Love and Louis Comte, so I took this book one step further and showed my son each person on the Internet to pique his interest (and mine) even more.

I definitely recommend this book to everyone with small kids!

Great for pre-schoolers and up

This is an entertaining book that incorporates historical figures that wore hats into the story. Very colorful illustrations make the story even more enjoyable! My children enjoyed it very much.

Does your toddler love books and love to wear hats?

At first I wasn't sure if my two year old would go for this book but he LOVES it! It's a little long, so I would recommend it for young toddlers, like my son, who really like to be read to and who have a long attention span. With older kids, about four and older, it should be fine. Each time I read this book to my son, I have to read it at least twice. I'm not sure if it's the very well written poetry or the pictures that captivate him the most. He has recently decided that he likes to wear hats and likes his mommy and daddy to wear hats, so maybe that's it. Anyway, this is a fun book that parents won't mind reading again and again and toddlers who love books, and hats, will simply adore.

This was a very enjoyable book to read. The people who contributed their stories shared many of the memories that I have of my own dogs. I recomend this book to all dog lovers. If I could give a six star rating to the book I would. I hope that the book has helped the Humaine Society.

Reading it was such a pleasure. I cried and laughed with those heartwarming stories and admired all these people who really love dogs, and who can appreciate what a dog can give you. A special gift you can't get unless you live with those little Friends. Almost all the books I have about dogs deal with their characters and ilnesses etc, but this book has a special place on my shelf because it speaks to the heart. I highly recommend it.

Great book with many interesting and heartfelt K-9 stories

This is a great book -- especially if you are crazy about dogs! The book is a collection of short stories written by all types of people -- rich, poor, famous, lonely, happy (you name it) -- and their canine friends. EXCELLENT GIFT idea for friends or relatives that love those furry faces. Also, a great gift for someone who is grieving over the loss of a dog. Definately a worthy purchase -- all proceeds go to the SPCA. The editor/author must have a big heart.

"Famous Failures" is a hefty little 288-page compendium showcasing descriptive vignettes of hundreds of famous and successful people in the fields of entertainment, sports, science, politics, and literature who all shared one thing in common - they experienced failure. From Albert Einstein who failed the entrance exams to the Swiss Polytechnic Institute, to J. K. Rowling (author of the Harry Potter novels) who was so impoverished that she lived on welfare in an apartment infested with mice, to Sharon Stone who could not get a date to her own highschool prom dance, to Dick Cheney who flunked out of Yale University (twice!), to John Wayne who was rejected from the United States Naval Academy, to Steve Jobs (founder of Apple Computer) who dropped out of Reed College in his freshman year, "Famous Failures" lists the well known and well respected who sometime in their lives and careers got rejected, flunked out, worked lousy jobs, goofed up, did time in jail, or had other kinds of failure experiences and frustrations before achieving the successes for which they are now know. A terrifically great read, "Famous Failures" is especially recommended for anyone getting discouraged about overcoming the seeming failures in their own lives and career paths.

The history of fame, writ large

Can you name the ten most famous people in western European history? After reading this book, you will. A monumental study of the human craving for attention, and the ways that people (mostly men) have sought it. I recommend this book for anyone who has wondered what all the fuss is about regarding celebrities today. This book was originally published in 1987, and Braudy has written an afterward for the 1997 edition -- it's very interesting to read what happens when you write "the book" on fame in the era of O.J.Simpson, Monika Lewinsky, et al.

In charting the course of fame, Braudy written a compelling and original history of Western culture. This is an amazing piece of work, clearly the product of insight, devotion, and many years of study. I've recently been seeing references to it in various mainstream publications, so I'm glad it's finally getting some of the attention it deserves, and it's nice to see that it went to paperback. It's ambitious, and I believe successful as well. It's fun to read, and it'll help refresh all that western history you forgot from school. If you don't completely love this book, you're a moron. (OK, that last statement's probably a bit much...) Anyway, note that I have no connection to the author, publisher, author's department (USC Literature), their families, or anything like that, other than having read this book.

I wasn't thirlled when I was given this book as a present - but as soon as I read the first lively biography, I became a fan of this well-written, sprightly collection of biographies of the colorful, eccentric characters who people Colorado's history. This book adds a well-researched human touch to the history of the west, and anyone who loves that history will be captivated by it.

I thoroughly enjoyed Here Lies Colorado. It gave entertaining insight into some really colorful characters and the times in which they lived. The author writes well about his subjects who are wide-ranging. I'd read about a few people and then say to myself, "Okay, just one more"....again and again and again! Needless to say, I finished the book too quickly.

A marvellous memento

Review Date: 2002-12-12
Now that we have definitively entered into a troubled 21st century, I am developing a weird kind of nostalgia for the equally troubled previous one. This book, a marvellous memento of the period between 1930 and 1960, does everything to fuel this ambiguous attraction.

With portraits of Chaplin, many of the leading Surrealists, Picasso, Stravinsky, T.S. Eliot, Dylan Thomas, Henry Moore and many others, Miller's twin eye Rolleiflex produces a very intimate view of the artistic scene in the middle of the 20th century. Some of the pictures were taken in the artist's studio, some in Miller's own studio, but most show the sitters informally and relaxed in mundane surroundings, weaving the mystery of artistic inspiration into the fabric of daily life. Whatever the context, Miller's portraits show the mark of a great artist, with composition, lighting and atmosphere invariably matched to the personality of the sitter. A great deal of her pictures are quite classical in conception, but many are spiced up with an occasional Surrealist wink.

The war pictures are a different matter. When Miller registers the ravages of this savage conflict, irony makes way for tragic grandeur. For example, the portrait of a Nazi suicide, daughther of the Leipzig Mayor, reconnects with the dramatic clair obscur of Carravaggio. Many of the images of wrens and ordinary service men reveal the quiet determination of people amidst a whirlwind of extreme violence. One of the most impressive pictures of this period, and in a sense an untypical one, depicts a murdered German prison guard floating in a canal bounding the Dachau camp, producing a mixture of the bucolic and the tragic which is very moving.

This book is beautifully produced and is a delight to hold in your hands. The captions that go with the pictures are well written and very informative. I would have wished for a more extensive lead essay by Richard Calvocoressi, but maybe we can find more information elsewhere. Pity also that the UK version of this book sports the Hein Heckroth portrait on its cover, which I do not find one of the most attractive pictures in this collection. But these minor quibbles do not detract for this valuable addition to my library.

Gentle and not so gentle reminders of what happened, what's been done, and what needs doing abound in this book. Each person's eyes tells me that they're not doing this as a pretty face, but as a witness. Let us each witness in our own way that what happened in New Orleans, in Florida, in Texas, could happen to us, to anyone we love, and let us witness, too, how we can each, in our own way, support, care for, and aid each other and ourselves in time of need.

Great !!!

Some books defy almost all categories. This is definitely one of those books. It is a book of hope, dreams, encouragement and support, for those who lost so much in Hurricane Katrina. This book is the brainchild of Naomi Strasser who, along with photographer friend Paul Alexander, decided to create art that would help in some small way to heal.

Alexander donated his time in photographing celebrities from around the world and from different strata of society. Many others contributed to the work, from the stylists working with the celebrities, to Ryan Priest doing the design and layout. This book was the work of the generosity of many, many people who all championed it and gave of their time and talents to make it happen.

The book is a collection of 71 unique portraits of celebrities, from Johnny Depp, Kelly Hu, and Coldplay, to Viggo Mortensen, Helen Bonham Carter and so many more. Accompanying each portrait is a letter, or encouragement note, to encourage the giving to continue. And it is for those who are far from home now, that they should keep hoping and dreaming of their return. Interspersed with photos of the actual devastation from Katrina, these notes provide hope, encouragement and support.

From Johnny Depp who writes "Help and Keep Helping", to Helen Bonham Carter stating "No amount of rain can drown the music of New Orleans", the words will challenge us to appreciate what we have and to help those less fortunate than we find ourselves to be.

The publisher, Naked Ink Press, is doing their part as well; they have committed to give at least $25,000 US dollars to both the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund and to Habitat for Humanity's Operation Home Delivery. That is $2.50 from each book, sold for a minimum of $25,000 each more depending on sales.

Shawn Ashmore states: "She beat you, but she didn't break you!! Stay strong!!" Picking up this book, either for yourself or for others as a gift, will help to make those words come true. So along with Kevin Bacon we will say "Thinking of U."

It may be trite, but giving this book as a gift, will be a gift that keeps on giving.

In January I discovered Missy Laws is the same person as Charlotte Laws. She is a politician in my area in Southern California and has written fascinating articles. I read her column each month and have heard her speak. So I bought this book used. It was a fast read and filled with interesting often outlandish stories. It seems good for anyone looking to be successful. It basically tells how to use the back door to get a job or become an actor or sell your writing or become a top executive in a corporation. It is about schmoozing with the right people and getting on the A list and being heard by the influential types. It sure seems Charlotte Laws has done it all. Good book.

Meet the Stars is full of insightful tidbits about mingling with those in the entertainment industry. Curious to discover whether the techniques suggested by author, Ms. Laws, actually work, I sought a date with my favorite actress. I must admit I was a bit skeptical as this book's publication date is quite ancient and I assumed the information would be out of date. But lo and behold, I met the actress of my dreams -- although could not persuade her to go out with me.

Ms. Laws does not discount the import of perseverance so I continue to pursue this goal. It has now been 18 months, and I must say that I have established quite a good friendship with my actress friend although have not yet had a date. (I am omitting her name out of respect for her privacy) But I do not give up hope. In the meantime, I've had the opportunity to meet many famous people by adhering to Ms. Laws' techniques and many other attractive women. I'm very impressed with her book and believe it could be of benefit to others.
