Annie Hoffman can't seem to get anything right. She can't get her driver's license, making her the only almost sixteen-year-old without one, meaning it's back to the buses. She can't get into Juilliard, since apparently she doesn't have much talent playing the violin. She can't get the guy of her dreams to notice her. And she can't get out of her stupid school with its stupid lunches.

One thing Annie can do, though, is make a talent agent take interest in her, making him give her a card, which would then land her in the newest and hottest teen soap drama, Country Day. Its certainly pays to leave an audition nearly crying; you never know who might notice your acting skills.

Everything goes from okay to awesome for Annie. She becomes America's sweetheart and is on the cover of every celebrity publication there is.

But Annie soon finds out that the biggest and best shot the paparazzi can take is when a celebrity is at their worst. And once it is printed for everyone to see, those who once adored her turn on her easily, even when they don't know the entire story. It's up to Annie to find her true self and, hopefully, find her way out of the negative limelight.

Not like the other novels that take on the plot of the girl-next-door who instantly becomes a teen sensation, BETTER OFF FAMOUS? has a mind of its own. With its realistic story of a girl lost in the limelight, struggling her way to get back to normal, with cameras following her every move, Jane Mendle creates a story that mirrors the mistakes that those we have all taken notice of make every day.

I loved BETTER OFF FAMOUS. Mendle crafted a fun, glitzy world of a teen TV star and her authentic behind the scenes look at TV production was fascinating. Her main character, Annie, is one I hope Mendle revisits with a sequel.

A Masterpiece of Bing Crosby Literature

I have been a fan of Bing Crosby since I was 6 years old. I am 33 now, and not to sound boastful, but I know a good bit about crooner Bing Crosby. However, after reading Richard Gruden's book, I am just amazed at what I learned. The book is lighthearted and fun...plain and simple. From Bing's early days in Spokane to his rise to fame, the book has numerous topics that would hold anyone's interest. Not only do you learn a lot about Bing Crosby, the greatest singer of the 20th century, but you will learn a lot about his contemporaries from Russ Columbo to Eddie Lang. This is one of my favorite books about Bing Crosby, and I truly recommend it for maybe a young fan just learning about Bing Crosby or a seasoned collector. I thought I knew a lot about Bing Crosby, but Mr. Grudens maybe me a little more humble. He proved that there is something always new you can learn about Bing Crosby. DO NOT MISS THIS GREAT BOOK!

Richard Gruden's heartwarming tale of Bing Crosby's life story is one that will remain in my personal library of well-written biographies for a long time. From birth to death, Bing Crosby's life is passionately displayed through words and pictures alike. Crosby fans and those new to his world of musical talent will instantly be entranced by the smooth flow of the story. Finally! A biography about one of the world's most influential musicians that doesn't read like a textbook but rather like a tale that makes me want to read it again and again!

I applaud Grudens for a job well done. "Bing Crosby--Crooner of the Century" will surely be a favorite of those who know Bing Crosby and wish to know more. The story comes with my highest recommendation.

Great Images, Plenty to Look at, Inspiring

I don't know anything about Nigel's background and have never met the guy (hopefully I will one day)....but just by looking through the images in the book it's easy to assume he's great to work with and is the kind of guy who can get even the hardest people to soften up, the most powerful to submit, and the average looking to display amazing beauty.

And the great equipment he uses is worthy of his talent. The images are tack sharp (just look at the detail on Sean Connery's photo). Through his lens Nigel gets the viewer face-to-face with some of the most powerful and famous people in the world, subjects who are rarely seen in such a tight and up-close point of view. However he doesn't shoot everything this way so it's not at all repetitive going through the pages.

I just got his book, Sharp, which so far I really like but not nearly as much as Blunt. This book is amazing and as a photographer myself I find so much inspiration looking through his images that I can't decide whether to turn to the next page or pick up my camera. Nice work, Nigel...keep it up!

Jon Chattman and Rich Tarantino have written an homage to one of man's best accessories - the moustache -
Brett Underhill has illustrated this very funny little book to perfection.
These folks write about men of varied degrees of moustaches - from Charlie Chaplin to Weird Al Yankovic - they rank people in like industries as far as who has the best moustaches, and I must say, I didn't realize there were so many prominent guys (and one female artist) with distinctive moustaches -
I have always been partial to a man with a moustache, and when my all time favorites - Sam Elliott and Tom Selleck were featured, ok - I knew these guys knew their stuff -
It is a really clever look at moustaches and lists famous folks who sport them - worth a look!

Every single book written by Maximillien de Lafayette is a signature of excellence. I am addicted to his books! He opens my eyes on our world...Rating: 5 stars!

My Favorite Book of the Season!

With great interest and enormous joy I read this book and could not put it down. It is fun, fun, fun. I did not know that Estee Lauder perfume "Country Mist" failed miserably in Germany because the word MIST means manure in German, until I read this book!

Surprised to read in the book that some French names raise red flag In France. For instance, Chantal means barracuda, Bernadette is innocent, Angele (Angela) in decent, Brigitte is unpredictable, Lou Lou is a teaser and Maurice is a playboy!

The book is filled with captivating stories from around the world. The author in a bursting simplicity explains the characteristic features and personality of Americans and people in 135 countries! WOW! It is overwhelming. Ranging from tradition, social etiquette and love to the bizarre, the secret and taboos.

I was particularly taken by the list of the outstanding people of our time and those who made a direct impact on our life, starting with George Bush and Hillary Clinton and ending with Madonna and Al Pacino. The roster of the most important American celebrities and the best and worst of our politicians is a coup de grace. Read the book. You got to read it; it is enjoyable and so much entertaining. This is my favorite book of the Season.

The world at your fingertips; this book presents on a silver dish all the important stuff you need to know about foreigners, their countries, lifestyles, taboos, politics, dating and way of life.

In addition, it offers an intelligent analysis of the American way of life, how we do business, our relationships with each other, techniques we use to succeed in our career. In brief, a most informative, and fun book I have read in a decade. One particular section is unusual: The roster of names (national and international) of the most important personalities and events of our time. It is a serious work, however, the great sense of humor of Maximillien de Lafayette adds an extra dimension of delight and fun to the book. It is a wonderful book. You will love it. I give this book 5 stars.- By Shoshanna Rosentein, WJNA.

Review Date: 2008-03-30
Ranging from ancient history to the present, this wonderfully comical book with its superbly hilarious illustrations present episodes from the lives of famous people who needed a "time out" when they did things which upset others. Not meant entirely to be a history lesson, it is instead a book that introduces to children the notion that even famous and powerful people have had to have "time outs" for behaving badly. Such a refreshing notion for today's world, and perhaps required reading for every military dictator, president and prime minister.

WHAT A GREAT CONCEPT!

In this absolutely hilarious book, children and parents alike are treated to a "Who's Who?" list of troublemakers, beginning all the way back with the Carthaginian General, Hannibal, and ending with Rosa Parks, who got a time out for doing something that wasn't even really wrong!

Deb Lucke presents each character, from Christopher Columbus to Johann Sebastian Bach to Babe Ruth, as people who made mistakes -- and had to pay the price by getting a time out! There's a lesson to be learned in each short story, whether it be the importance of telling the truth or the fact that it's a bad idea to be a marauding pirate, and it's all done with humour and in a way that's easy for kids to understand.

This isn't a book that tells youngsters it's okay to do something they know is wrong, but it is a book that tells them that everyone makes mistakes. And, sometimes, the only way to make up for those mistakes is with a good old-fashioned time out!

This is one title that's sure to be a winner for all ages!

This is a great book for anyone who is a fan, but also a real treat for people living in the metro-Detroit area, as a few of the celebrities asked are local TV and radio stars. She wrote to a lot of people over the years and has a great collection of stars' heroes, from Soupy Sales to Les Paul and of course Davy Jones! It's neat to find out who inspired the celebrities to be who they are today.

Mary Guerra is an authority on fandom as she is a member of a fanclub or two herself. I know this since she belongs to the fanclub I run for Davy Jones, Davy Devotees. Though the concept of fandom is normally perceived as being something the nonfamous possess, Mary spent years contacting various celebrities asking them just who they consider themselves a fan of and what fanclubs they would join if they could! She received personal responses from legends in the field of entertainment like RoseMarie and Phyllis Diller to Les Paul, inventor of the electric guitar, Richard Petty, of racing fame, columnist, Liz Smith and "Mr. Hockey" Gordie Howe. Shirley Jones, Peter Noone and Mary's personal favorite, Davy Jones of The Monkees, are just a few of the many other highlighted celebrities. If you've been a fan of anyone at anytime, this book gives you an interesting look at who those we admire actually admire. At times the featured celebrities provide laughs and at other times intriguing revelations. Overall this is a fun read with a lot of heart!

Celebrity Diplomacy is insightful and well written. Anyone interested in the global significance of celebrity diplomacy will enjoy this book. Cooper has provided the reader with an interesting history of celebrities who have both failed and succeeded (at varying levels)in using their status to impact global politics. Bono (of U2) is essentially used as a unique case (or typology) for what responsible, intellectual and thoughtful celebrity looks like. The argument suggests that we can not over look the impact these high profile individuals have on social problems. Their involvement is important and not "fad-ish" and is therefore worthy of academic inquiry.

Only book taking this seriously!

This is the first book to really take international celebrity advocacy seriously. Bono, Angelina, Geldof, Gates, Soros, N'Dour and others are drastically changing how diplomacy is done - anyone studying IR needs to understand the influence these individuals wield.

Cooper gives the reader a better idea of who these celebrities are, why they've stepped out of their 'celebrity' shoes, and what impact they're really having.

Great read!

An insightful lens through which to view the evolving international stage and its modern players.

Review Date: 2007-10-02
Artfully combining an experienced intellectual analysis of new forms of complex diplomacy with an appreciation for the dynamism and fluidity of popular culture, Cooper's Celebrity Diplomacy fills a glaring and growing gap in the study of contemporary international relations. From Gates to Geldof to Shakira, the growing diplomatic potential of celebrities continues to evolve and show its true form. However, the subject has been largely undervalued in previous works, like Alleyne's "The United Nations' Celebrity Diplomacy," which considers the subject only as a crutch and potential veneer for a faltering UN, and is even more commonly discarded. Cooper's work illustrates the distinct shortcomings in either of these positions. Positioning this new form of diplomat in an international milieu where the prominent groups and organizations are plagued by questions of legitimacy and efficiency, Cooper illustrates the strength of such a mobile network of individuals endowed with populist recognition and access to the world's greatest powers. Furthermore, in distinguishing Sir Bob's aggressive sound bite politics from Bono's more reserved diplomacy, etc., he constructs a guidebook for this growing network and its many facets. Ultimately, the work is integral to any serious contemplation of contemporary diplomacy; an insightful lens through which to view the ever-evolving international stage and its modern players.
