The Greatest Portrait Artist of All Time!

This book is filled with some of the greatest portrait art I have ever seen! Kruger uses a wide variety of styles. Some images seem to be caricature in nature, while others are more realistic, and still others are totally unique in style and hard to catagorize. The common thread of all the images in this book is that they portray the character of the subject with unmatched accuracy and ability. The images in this book can best be described by one word, 'WOW'! The high quality of this book's printing also does great justice to these astounding images. All in all I give this book 'two thumbs up' 'way up'! Highly recommended for those interested in art that is innovative and masterful.

sebastian kruger is the best caricaturist of his generation. i would put him up there with levine and hirshfeld. but unlike those two kruger doesn't have a style. his consistency lies in his constant exploration of other styles. He approaches each celebrity with a fresh eye. No two pictures in this book look the same, but all are done with impeccable skill. This book is wonderful at showing some of his more popular subjects. The reproductions are great except for two blurry images. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in celebrities, caricatures, acrylics, airbrushes, and people with big noses.

A fascinating, personal probe of what makes fandom

What happens when a fan becomes obsessed with obtaining autographs of famous personalities? As a teen, author Michael Gross collected thousands of autographs by writing fan letters to politicians, actresses, and more. As an adult, he probes the world of celebrity admiration with a more researched eye in Starstruck: When A Fan Gets Close To Fame, examining everything from concerts and tabloid reporting to chasing stars for autographs. And Gross should know: he's one of the crowd. A fascinating, personal probe of what makes fandom.

Gross doesn't just write about pop culture and the sometimes bizarre interactions between fans and stars, but he also has the guts to talk openly about his own experiences as a fan in an intelligent, honest and self-deprecating way.
I was especially struck by his account of how Gross planned to tell Dolly Parton a sad story about his mother and one of Parton's songs, and how it took him some time to recognize that his initial angry reaction to the cancellation of the interview was because of the loss of the chance to achieve some brief, false intimacy with a star via this story. I just wish all fans and writers could be that self-aware.

Expecting to read an earnest, sober treatise on the nature of celebrity and individuality, I was surprised by the depth of my emotional reaction to Starstruck. Gross introduces elements of his own life into the narrative almost from the beginning of the book -- at first tangentially, then deftly weaving his story with those of the fans and stars whom he interviews. The climactic "scene" works on so many levels, I found myself wishing for a movie studio to option the book. Even as pure gossip Starstruck is a juicy read: I'll never look at Katie Couric quite the same way again. While I would have appreciated more on the history and sociology of our culture's fascination with celebrities, the book serves as a powerful, resonant, and personal meditation on what it means to be a fan.

Michael Gross' book Starstruck is an extraordinary compendium of not only his own experiences as a fan, but serves as a unique and important analysis of the world of celebrity. At a time when we are saturated with entertainment culture, Gross manages to lift back the veil on this unique late 20th century phenomenon to explore both the personal and the political consequences of our collective obsession with fame. From poignant and hilarious stories of his own crazy desire to be near the famous - his boyhood letters to Ronald Reagan are priceless - to his adult understanding of those who have dedicated their lives to famous people - Dolly Parton fans in particular - Gross's authorial voice is both critical and sympathetic at the same time. This book is original, engaging, and utterly compelling. A great read for those of us who flip through grocery market tabloids and those of us interested in a more serious look at cultural politics. Five stars!

Success Secrets of Super Achievers by Jim Stovall
Unlike most books that touch on the 'success secrets' or 'the ultimate success formula' (USF), this book takes a seemingly broad-based & light-hearted approach to the subject. Best of all, it doesn't pin down to a specific formula but rather chooses to give readers an opportunity to explore diverse perspectives.
To cap his clever approach, the author even draws on the candid viewpoints of a relatively disparate sampling of ordinary people who have lived or are living great lives, with goals, vision & passion - 82 of them to be exact, widely known & admired in movie entertainment, music, politics & law, business, sports & even religion. A lot of these people, to my surprise, are not the traditionally rich & famous but, as the author puts it, these people have been "to the mountaintop" in their respective field.
As an award-winning broadcaster, the author has abundant access to these successful people - or super-achievers - in the real world. To his many personal & frank interviews with these people, he has asked two compelling questions:
- How do you define success; and
- What does it take to be happy?
This inspiring book certainly captures the 'strategic heartbeat' of most of the interviewees' inspiring responses. Their advice is very simple, straight-forward, & effective, with no ulterior motive other than to help those who seriously want to join them on the mountaintop.
The author is in fact a super-achiever himself & despite his failing eyesight & eventual blindness, he has been an Entrepreneur of the Year, a national champion Olympic weightlifter, a successful investment broker, an accomplished musician/songwriter, a marketing consultant, & a professional speaker, an author & president/co-founder/host of a television network.
As a matter of fact, I understand that one of his best-selling books, "The Ultimate Gift" is now a 20th Century Fox major motion picture, starring James Garner.
In a nutshell, & collectively for readers, I am very confident readers can find numerous startling answers as well as unusual perspectives in your continuing quest for:
- Becoming the best you can be;
- Changing your life;
- Turning your dreams into reality;
- Taking action starting today;
- Finding & fulfilling your destiny regardless of your circumstances;
Many of the super achievers whom the author had interviewed, especially those from movie entertainment, also brought forth many sweet memories of my childhood times in the late fifties & throughout the sixties, during which I had spent much of my spare time going to the movies & watching the black box.
Here are some of my unforgettable movie/TV characters with their winning insights in the book:
- Eddie Albert (played a big city attorney - who long desired to become a farmer - opposite Eva Gabor in 'Green Acres' TV series): "I really don't care how I am remembered as long as I bring happiness & joy to people";
- Joseph Barbera (creator/producer of 'Tom & Jerry', 'The Flintstones' cartoon series for TV, among many others): "Without persistence, it is impossible to experience success."
- Ralph Bellamy ('Frontier Justice', 'The Eleventh Hour", 'The Survivors', but I remember him best as the rich Texan J W Grant in 'The Professionals'): "Never back down on your dreams!";
- Pat Boone (for me, his original rendition of 'Speedy Gonzales' is the best!): "I define success as somehow having a positive effect on the lives of others."
- Chuck Connors (as rancher Lucas McCain - with his modified Winchester - in `The Rifleman' TV series): "Concentrate on the fun-damentals!"
- Jack Elam (memorable supporting roles in 'High Noon' & "Gunfight at OK Corral'): "Never say die! You can make it by just trying & trying & trying...& taking chances!"
- Douglas Fairbanks (often played the debonair character in slapstick comedies or adventure yarns e.g. 'The Legend of Robin Hood'; best remembered from his role in 'The Prisoner of Zenda'): "Only when we rise above our current circumstances & escape from the day to day can we really explore the possibilities."
- Peter Graves (as Jim Phelps in 'Mission: Impossible' TV series): "Success in life means...a goal that you have an eye on...that goal...something you must do & persevere until you got it done or got a start at it...then you stay on top of it, & keep punching & pushing & striving all the time to go in the directions that you want..."
- Katharine Hepburn ('The Philadelphia Story', 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner & `The African Queen' are three of her most memorable films): "All of us need to find that passion in our work, or find work where we can experience the passion."
- Charlton Heston ('Benhur', The Ten Commandments, 'The Omega Man', & `Solyent Green'): "Spend your time wisely!"
- Shirley Jones ('Oklahoma', 'Elmer Gantry', and `The Partridge Family'): "If you know how to get along with people, you are a lot more likely to succeed in all the areas of your life."
- Deborah Kerr (a captivating portrayal opposite Burt Lancaster in 'From Here to Eternity'): "...There are some limitations that simply cannot be overcome. But instead of giving up on all your dreams just because your first dream can't be true, transfer your enthusiasm to a new endeavour."
- Dorothy Lamour (I will always remember her roles in 'The Road to...' pictures, a series of movies with Bob Hope & Bing Crosby): "The world takes itself far too seriously; laughter is something there's far too little of. Whatever one does, they should always remember to laugh."
- Jack Lemon ('Mister Roberts', 'Some Like It Hot', 'Days of Wine & Roses' but his role of Jack Codell in 'The China Syndrome' in the late seventies was the most memorable): "Achieving success can be thrilling, but it is a lot more satisfying if you can make a worthwhile difference in someone's life on your way up."
- Robert Young ('Father Knows Best', 'Marcus Welby' TV series): "You have to have enthusiasm."
- Joseph Wambaugh (creator of the classic anthology series for TV under 'Police Story' in the seventies): "The only thing I have learned about success is that if one is willing to listen, really listen, to things that are said, as well as to things that are not said, that person will be miles ahead of the competition."
Other successful people interviewed in the book include: The Dalai Lama, Alexander Haig, Robert Schuller, Charles Schwab, Robert Shapiro (remember O J Simpson?), Ted Turner, Denis Waitley, Art Linkletter & Gary Player.
To conclude my review, I would like to paraphrase what the author wrote in the Introduction, which I thought really accentuates the essence of his book: "...I have now read the biographies of more than 1,500 great & famous people. One of the traits they have in common is a sense of expectation & destiny. They always believed that they were destined for greatness. I trust that you believe that you are destined for greatness, & that this book will be a launching pad for all that is yet to come...This book & the success secrets it contains should be your constant companion on the road to success. Don't try to reinvent the wheel. Simply follow the trail that has already been blazed, & you will find that your success is not a mystery, but a certainty."

Jim Stovall went to people who were the top of their fields and asked them for their own personal keys to success. This book contains over 80 responses from some of the worlds greatest figures in business, sports, religion, law, politics, entertainment, and more. Names we all know, love, and admire, like Jacqueline Bisset, Lou Holtz, Carol Channing, Dave Barry, Eddie Albert, Charles Schwab, Johnnie Cochran, and Socks the Cat. Each person's profile give a simple and straight forward answer to success on their own terms.
You can digest each one in moments, and before you know it, you've read the entire book! I read it all in one night, and three more time in the following week.. This book instantly became one of my favorites for inspiration, and I plan to keep it nearby for those time when I feel less that stellar to remind me of the things I need to focus on for my success.

Great Book! I was especially touched by the words of Ken Venturi who responded to a question regarding his possible pro golf ending condition by saying: "I don't believe you have to be better than everybody else. I believe you have to be better than you ever thought you could be." This book contains submittals from 82 stars, business executives, government and spiritual leaders, and sports heroes that express their thoughts on success. The book provides the reader with a number of thoughts that may unlock their potential. Here are some of them: "It is not always getting what you like but liking what you get."----Donna Fargo (Singer) "It all boils down to spirit and thinking. Everything happens in the mind."--Phyllis Diller "If you can meet Triumph and Disaster and treat those two imposters the same...." Oleg Cassini (Designer for Jackie O) "Everyone has problems. It is part of our mortal experience." ---Gary Player (Professional Golfer) It has 2-3 pages of thoughts on success from all 82 people. Awesome book. I recommend it. I read it in one night!!!!!!!

Could Carmen Electra be any dumber? Yes! With pages upon pages devoted to the verbally challenged who make up Hollywood's elite (in addition to dozens of atheletes, politicians, etc), They Said That! is sure to amuse. I recommend this book to all lovers of popculture.

I have been a fan of Editorial Cartoons and cartoons in general for many years. The Editorial Cartoons we get in our daily papers are pretty much written around the news of the day and are wonderful in their own way.However, they tend to lose their punch very quickly and are not intended to be otherwise.
What Sorel gives us is more the thinking man's portraits presented as caricatures.His portraits are more akin to what you see in the higher scale magazines such as The New Yorker and Esquire. Because more thought goes into these portraits;they tend to give a picture of that person over a much longer period of time and therefoe gets to their real essence.
When you look at one of these portraits,say the one of Marlon Brando and Al Pacino on page 94,you can't help but agree that Sorel has really captured the essence of these two great actors.His portrayal of the 5th Anniversary of Watergate,on page 147,as a picnic ,leaves one with the thought;What a party it was! Then on page 108 ,he steps back and portrays the Great Modern Irish Writers,Joyce,Yeats,O'Casey,Beckett,Lady Gregory,Oliver St.John O'Gogarty and Synge,and what a serious and determined lot they be;and little wonder there was no place among them for the irrasible Brendan Behan.Whether it's Sinatra,Bacall,LBJ,Nixon,Bogart,Hefner,Eastwood,Caruso,Napoleon,MadonnaReagan,Quale,Truman & Ike on page 166,Clinton in the company of Past Presidents,or Gingrich being consoled by Uncle Sam;if you like characters and the artistic portrayal of them by a great caricaturist;you'll love this book

"Unauthorized Portraits" is a sumptuous must-read for the working cartoonist or illustrator (like myself). Edward Sorel's clever drawings and candid text will amuse, inspire, humble, and even comfort any commercial artist or pop culture enthusiast. Sorel is an artist and a gentleman (I know; I've met him) - but he is also a visual raconteur. I hope his agile pens never run dry.
I'd give it ten stars!

Mr. Sorel is the most elegant cartoonist there is! His sophisticated draftsmanship is superb, the subtle way he uses colors has no match and, well, I guess even the guys he most mercilessly trashes ought to be proud to appear in such fantastic cartoons!
Besides, the man obviously knows what he's talking about: art, books, movies, music, politics... Simply put, Edward Sorel's work is THE example of what an intelligent cartoonist should look like.

I read this book while stuck on a train that was delayed for hours. It was so really ENTERTAINING that the time flew by!
I can tell you that I will never, ever look at any "star" with the same sense of admiration. Sometimes behind the sparkling image there is absolutely nothing of any value. Combine those empty-heads with a super-sized false sense of entitlement and a BIG MOUTH, and you've got the mega-laughs of Kathryn & Ross Petras' wonderful book!

Mostly, you will find yourself laughing out loud but be warned some of the quotes in Unusually Stupid Celebrities are so shockingly stupid, they may bring you to tears. All in all, this book is great, light-reading fun! I highly recommend it. Kathryn and Ross Petras have once again produced a well-written, hilarious, winner! (Take this one to the beach.)

Even today, when celebrity revelations droppeth like the gentle rain, Studs Terkel stands head and shoulders above other interviewers. He had a knack. He could get people to say things they hadn't planned on saying. Terkel knew precisely what to ask, and how to ask it. Those are my words - the Chicago Sun Times said it better:
"Studs Terkel (gets) people to say things in such a way that you know at once they have finally said their truth, and said it better than they ever believed they could say it."
Trained as a lawyer, experienced as an actor, and a best-selling author, Terkel spent half a century on his Chicago based Peabody Award winning syndicated radio program. He brought together people from all walks of life, artists, writers, philosophers, inventors, and visited with each of them as they recounted their triumphs and failures.
Now, 48 of these original interviews have been gathered for our enjoyment - it's a treat to hear the stories of those who influenced our world in their own voices. We hear R. Buckminster Fuller, Woody Allen, Gore Vidal, Eudora Welty, Dorothy Parker, Bertrand Russell, Leonard Bernstein, and a host of others.
Exemplary listening pleasure!

Studs Turkel is a wonderful interviewer, and over the past five decades he has interviewed many of the great thinkers, writers, and doers of our time. The ones he chose for this collection include Aaron Copland, Oliver Sacks, Margaret Mead, Daniel Ellsberg, Maya Angelou, Pete Seeger, John Kenneth Galbraith, and dozens of others. All together, they provide a fascinating portrait of the last half of 20th century. Highly recommended!

Having grown up in Chicago and spent a chunk of my adult life there as well, perhaps the thing I miss most is Studs Terkel and WFMT, the best
FM station in the country. I learned as much about life and the never-ending struggle for human rights from Studs' interviews as I did from any
professor or priest. Hearing these wonderful chunks of those conversations again fills me with nostalgia and recharges my batteries for my own twilight struggle against the world's ills.

How dare "Gooch"(if that is his real name) claim such an outragious statement! Mr. Friedman was one of the hardest-working caricaturists in business from the time period in which he used innumerable ammounts of dots in his work(and certainly the same for hard-working cartoonists, right up there with Henriette Valium)! I admire his work greatly, and I would not prefer it to many cartoonists if in fact your "rapidograph" statement was indeed (psssh!) true! From now on, research something before ya write a review claiming something you obviously made up, thinking no one could have such great talent. And claiming that Vonnegut got "high-minded" when compairing Drew to Goya is an insult to both Mr. Friedman, and Mr. Vonnegut. Furthermore, I will enjoy your reply and/or apology and/or insult posted on this fair site, that is, if you will stop being insulted, and actually take in what I have typed. May the Earth smell of Drew Friedman's philosophical celebrity skewerings evermore, amen.

Ya see? This is what happens when 2 shlubs waste their precious time watching Sandler & Young on THE MIKE DOUGLAS SHOW. (Didn't Bruce ever tell them to go outside and get some fresh air?)
Josh's wordage really outdid itself in ENTERTAINMENT FREAK (my favorite thingy). Wherein the word "entertainment" takes on the hypnotic quality of a mantra. The sour crabby look on Miriam's face happens to be the greatest pictorial rendering of anything since...oh...I'd have to go back to Margaret Keane in her prime.
In case you're curious, Drew accomplishes his stuff with something called a rapidograph. Kurt Vonnegut got all high-minded by claiming that Drew is right up there with Goya. But I very much doubt if Goya or Van Gogh or even Ernie Bushmiller (the illustrious illustrator of NANCY & SLUGGO) could've been capable of the meticulous subtlety on display here.

Mr. Gooch McCracken is quite incorrect. Drew Friedman has NEVER used a rapidograph pen in his work, EVER. He uses a Crowquill pen with a HUNT nib, the reason being that the line drawn by a rapidograph does not vary. Mr Friedman is much more of a true ARTIST than THAT.

The Friedman brothers are without a doubt two of the most brilliant satirists alive. Warts and All contains capsule biographies of a variety of obscure individuals and bygone celebrities. There are odd juxtapositions of serial killers and celebrities. The artwork (meticulously crafted with rapidograph) is excellent. Warts and All is dark, very dark comedy. It is not for everyone. However, if the reader is familiar with the references, one can appreciate what a virtuoso work this is. Highly recommended for the twisted lay person.

Patricia Brooks brings to her role as food critic for "The New York Times" a sure palate, fluid style and voice of decorous authority. But she often garnishes her reviews with a wry and piquant humor and -- when some meal or dish fails to meet expectation -- can readily throw the pepper and spice.
It hardly surprises then that the author brings the same sure style, wry humor and zestful approach to what some might regard as a ghoulish undertaking -- cemetery reviews. Making us first aware that -- much more than mere resting places -- they additionally serve as tourist attractions,parks,places to picnic,sit,read,meditate and even in my case,jog -- she guides us not only through final resting places but through American history, culture and sociology.
It fascinated me to find that pugilistic hero of my Irish youth,Gene Tunney went down for the 'eternal count'in Greenwich -- not far from my own CT 'corner';that the full 40 inches of Tom Thumb lie beneath a "40-foot-high white marble tribute" in Bridgeport;that John Ford -- director of classic westerns like 'Stagecoach' that even in rainy Dublin caused me try to swagger like John Wayne on some cactus-dotted plain -- lies beneath the "grassy land and rolling hills" of a cemetery in Culver City and finally, that the headstone of James Dean, whose appeal -- since all the girls had already fallen for him -- made me feel so inadequate as a teen,is still covered with lipstick kisses, though he would be over 70 were he still alive.
Pat Brooks has presented us with a thoroughly researched, beautifully written, rich-textured and fully-flavored book that everyone should savor.

I read this book from cover to cover last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. I will also add that I am already familiar with most of the information covered in this book and I still enjoyed it. I gravehunt for a hobby which is basically as good as saying I've never seen a cemetery I didn't like. Heck, I even waste entire vacations hopping from one cemetery to another. That having been said, here is the scoop on this book.
This is not a guide for gravehunters per se. It does not provide precise instructions as to where all identified personalities are buried. It also does not contain comprehensive listings of all permanent residents of interest buried in the cemeteries included.
What this book does do is highlight the best cemeteries in the continental United States. It provides the addresses for these cemeteries, their hours of operation, good information regarding the safety of the areas being visited, and a thumbnail history of each cemetery selected for inclusion. It also may contain a general list of celebrities interred within, as well as mini-biographies of some of the more prominent subjects as well as generalized instructions as to where specific graves are located.
This information included is about 99+% correct. I did find a couple of errors which I believe were obtained from other sources which have been proven false but continue to be perpetuated in other books and/or publications.
As for the overall appearance of the book, the publisher did a fantastic job of presenting an appealing package. The photos are very clear and the general layout of the book is not only user friendly but very attractive. Amazingly, this book is very clean in the sense that it was well-written and well-edited. I've seen a lot of really badly done books in the past 5 years or so. THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT ONE OF THEM.
Now for the big question......why buy this book? It is a lot of fun. There have been a lot of books published in recent years covering this subject (i.e., cemeteries). Some are very specific in terms of geographic location, the type of person buried within (movie stars, politicians, historical figures, etc). This book takes those elements and basically is a compilation of the very best of the best. It cuts through a lot of garbage and gives you the ones that tourists will like the best. Whether you want to visit a large number of the cemeteries included or visit a couple of them, this book will provide you with enough information to base your decision on. It is also a neat read.

Visiting cemeteries is not only a lot of fun, but it is cheap entertainment when visiting a large city. Autor Patricia Brooks has divided the book into regions of the country and provided both pictures and interesting tidbits of the famous and infamous who are buried around the country. More photos in the book would have been desirable, but then the amount of text would have had to have been reduced. Following the information as to who is buried in each of the visited cemeteries, the address, visiting hours, and telephone number is provided for those who plan on a closer look of their own. Many interesting individuals had to be omitted due to the number of people buried in places such as New York and California. However, the book may be on an off-beat subject, but it is, nevertheless, an interesting book on an interesting subject. If you enjoy prowling through cemeteries looking for the graves of notables this book will not disappoint you.
