Drew Barrymore is to be congratulated. Her honesty is painfully refreshing and hasn't been seen lately since the new Star Jones book ... or possibly the Burt Reynolds biography.
She's seen the depths and the heights and knows the difference. She's drank the champagne (even though she was 8 at the time) and sipped the sewer water and prefers the former. She's been on the carpet and also received carpet burns on her knees when she was short rent.
Thank you Drew for being an inspiration to all the preteens with drinking problems ... they don't have to suffer in silence anymore.

Literally one of the greatest books I've ever read. No, I'm not saying that because I'm a Drew Barrymore fan. I mean, if acting isn't what she wanted to do, she could've been an author! Written when she was still in rehab circa late 1988 and published in 1990, this book gives all of us an insight into her early years, and the hell she went through at such a young age. She tells us about her first taste of alcohol, cigarettes, cocaine, and marijuana. She also tells us about her first kiss, and her first makeout session, and how she was always fighting with her mother. She tells us about living at the rehab. She tells us about her visits with her father as well. She shares all of her stories and adventures, her mishaps and her first achievements. With this book, I've learned how truly strong this woman is, and how no matter what she went through, she didn't ever back down at achieving what she wanted. Drew Barrymore is a true idol for anyone, and this book proves that.

I was pleasantly surprised after I finished reading this book! It's very entertaining from start to finish, and as you read more and more about this little girl's life, it gets more and more interesting.
When you think Drew has hit the bottom, you turn a page and she goes farther down. It's amazing to see how strong Drew is, and every page is filled with interesting details.
It includes stories about her first drink and more, and you are amazed that such an inasant looking girl was into the worst of drugs. She tells about the terrifying and amazing incidents that came from the drugs. After you are finished, you are interested in knowing more and more about what happened to Drew.
If you want to read a very satisfying book, I highly reccomend this one!

I used to really dislike Drew Barrymore. ( no offence if u DO read this) i was being forced to read a biography for my lang. arts class so i picked drew cuz she was the only 1 who seemed at least worth reading bout. i dont really want to read bout someone old dead guy. so i started liking her when i started not likeing Adam Sandler as much as i used to cuz thats really the only reason i hated her cuz she was always with adam. i mean now that im not screwed up with adam i c she wasnt always with him @ all. so i started reading it and in so many ways i wanted to b friends with her and help her. but not get high with her. :) its so awesome! now i want to buy it. if i had any advice to give, everyone who thinks their live is bad, read this book. evn if u dont everyone should read this. well i gtg bye this wonderful book bye! If your have a wild imagination, and you remember all kinds of traumas you had to face just growing up, this book is for you. Think about all the characters in "Peanuts" and how complex the simple things in life might look to each of them as they march through the cartoon strip. You don't just scan these cartoons and move on -- you need to really digest the concept of what is being said and then ask yourself, "Is there a little bit of me in there?" Like Penelope Poptart, I sometimes fancy myself eminently wordly.

I loved this book -- and everyone who has received it from me has loved it. The drawings are crisp and colorful; the captions describe the perplexities, vicissitudes, pathos of coping with life in a way I've never seen described before. I want to see more of Rosen's highly original work -- I have a feeling there are a lot more characters longing for exposure. Some of these little people make me laugh; some make me think. I can see humanity in them all. Congratulations to the author and to Bloomsbury for a marvelous book launch.

This is a small book with a huge heart. Rosen's misfits are a colorful assemblage straight out of a true poet's head. A delight to the eye that speaks to the soul. Unpretentious little book that seems genuinely inspired.

This is an adorable little book! I've never heard of the author; from the looks of him on the back flap you'd think he was bored with the idea of being a superstar, which is what he will undoubtedly become once word gets out. This is a very funny, adorable little book! The pages are smooth and creamy, like the tender thighs of a freshly plucked chicken. Between the covers you'll find a generous assortment of endearingly eccentric characters that are in many ways Kafkaesque--with not a wee bit of Bloom County thrown in for good measure? I think my favorite character is "Clyde Battle, corporate walrus" who "lumbers down another synthetic hallway." Man that guy cracks me up! My sole misgiving concerns the paper. I love creamy paper--because I have dry skin and so I like to touch moist things-- but it's sooo white that I'm afraid to turn the pages with my fingers for fear that I might irreparably damage them with my uncleanliness. My favorite moviestar wrote the foreward: Drew Barrymore. I was already intrigued by it's cover, but I just knew I had to purchase it when I read Miss Barrymore's foreword. (Or is it Mrs. now? Honestly, I can't keep track--she's so delicious!) This would make the perfect present for that special someone--maybe cushion it inside a well-crafted basswood box with Hershey's Kisses and leave it on their doorstep along with a brief note that says, "I Love You"!

Zannos covers Barrymore like an asbestos blanket. Indepth, insightful and insipid, this book gets to heart of what makes Barrymore tick. It's about heart, people. Barrymore came from nothing. No money. No famous name to fall back on ... it was what was in her heart that made her famous. I'll always remember her fondly for her hair-raising performance in Boys on the Side. I'm not sure if Barrymore did any more films after that but there was also a great performance in that film by a man who goes by the name of Whoopi ... is that right? Whoopi? Mr. Whoopi Goldberg? Hmm. Anyway, he was good and reminded me of a young Al Roker.

If you already love Tim Sandlin as I do, you'll find that his unique, quirky humor continues here. Tim has a way of breaking life down into simple body functions.I'm pretty sure the number of references to drool and spit in this book is some kind of literary record. While still hilarious at times, the dark side of this book hit me harder than any of his others, the love, loss and parenting in his other books are pretty open ended subjects, but old age as a subject runs up against the wall of iminent death and makes me think harder on that subject than is comfortable. I wanted to run right out, join a gym, beef up my IRA contribtions and re-write my will, and even that didn't make me think I would be safe from the fate shared by Sandlin's characters. This is the scariest funny book I've ever read.

More than a novel, this is a story of the fears of growing old. Most of us fear that we will end up in an institution without any rites, being ordered to play bingo and shuffleboard. We fear being treated like children, given drugs that zap us out, put in a wheelchair and sat in front of a TV to watch "Regis and Kathy Lee" reruns all day. More than anything else we fear the loss of freedom of action (or inaction). If I wanted to be regimented, I would have joined the armed forces, or become a guerilla with the Grey Panther Liberation Forces.
Sandlin does a decent job putting all these fears together, at the same time he doesn't take everything to seriously either. The problem I had with the book was that it was much of a 'pastiche' as opposed to a coherent story. All the little anecdotes that he created are cute or funny, but that doesn't create a 'whole'.

This is a vey humorous look at the now. The first official Baby boomer has applied for social security!!! That makes this a very timely novel while also giving into the Nostalgia of the sixties thru the characters. Mr. Sandlin is one of the best novelists we have in this country today, this isn't his best novel but it will do until he gets us the next installment of the Gro-Vont series.

I'm a Tim Sandlin fan, and I'd read in our local paper that he'd written a new book about hippies living in a nursing home. Sounded interesting, so I rushed to Amazon.com to buy it.
I'm disappointed. Tim Sandlin usually gets me laughing, but there isn't much to laugh about in Jimi Hendrix Turns Eighty. In fact, parts of it are, in my opinion, quite dull. The premise is unrealistic, and no amount of description and explanation can bring me to believe these characters.
The point of view flips from character to character, so we're in the heads of many, many people. It gets a little confusing sometimes remembering who is who and who does what and why.
Perhaps if I had lived through the sixties, I'd find this book less drab. There are so many references to those days when the moon was in the seventh house and Jupiter aligned with Mars, and many I am not familiar with. I suppose someone who'd like a trip down memory lane might find those details of vivid interest.
I'd hazard a guess that Tim Sandlin wrote this book out of love and respect for his generation, and this was a book he had a great time writing. Unfortunately, I did not have as much joy reading it.

"Jimi Hendrix Turns Eighty" is destined to become the Bible of the boomers as we age and are forced to confront our own mortality. In Sandlin's vision of the inmates taking over the asylum, I felt like I was meeting up with some long-lost friends: the feminist activists, the stoners, the Deadheads, the masters of the sit-ins and the protest rallies. Those who didn't live through those years might view the book's characters as caricatures, but we who survived the '60s (perhaps without remembering much of that decade) can see that Mission Pescadero's residents truly represent that era.
It's not all hijinks and hilarity though. All of these characters have a history that is still a part of them. Rocky's brief fling during the Summer of Love leaves her with a lifelong reminder that there are consequences to one's actions, as does Judith coming out of her drug-induced coma only to be unmasked as a fugitive for the past 60 years. Phaedre, the self-defined creator of feminism who strove for equality and liberation has turned into the oppressor, turning the younger and adoring Suchada into nothing more than an indentured servant and sexual toy. And Winston lacing the iced tea with LSD, sending the residents on unwanted trips, reminds everyone that there's a reason that some parts of the past should stay in the past.
In addition, many of the issues raised in this novel are all too real and should be addressed before something like the plot of this book actually happens. Through his comedy, the author has given us much to think about: how we treat the elderly, how our society views its senior citizens as burdens instead of valuable contributors, how a "senior moment" can all too often be misconstrued by adult children and even the medical community (which should know better) as dementia. And most importantly, how those declining bodies still have the desire and ability to laugh and to love.
The issues raised, and the bittersweet ending, will probably stay with me for far longer than the hilarious trip down memory lane.

I could never understand why this film flopped. I saw it opening weekend in the theater and it was packed. Everyone there was really into it. I went back twice more while it was in the theater, and while it was never as full, most of the seats were occupied. And people were just as enthusiastic. It is still great at home, although not as fun. The music expresses what simple words couldn't, it sets the mood. I wouldn't sit around and listen to it away from the movie, but it works. It's really too bad that fox animation went under. I hate the way that Disney "disnifies" every film they get their hands on, and it would have been nice for them to have some competition.

I've seen where people put this movie down a lot but let me tell you I really enjoyed it. If your one of those people who likes to sit back and pick apart a plot, then any movie is hard pressed to make you happy. If you let yourself be immersed in the universe this movie takes place in, you'll really enjoy it. I am a big fan of the post apocalypse genre and this movie is a refreshing new take on it. I'm not going to give you a synopsis of the movie but it is a good epic space opera worth seeing.

As been a fan of drew barrymore, i could read anything about her and it would amuse me for a long time. I don't normally read books, although there is an odd occasion. I ordered this book 3 days before it came, and as soon as i had it, i read at least an hour of it [past half way OF THE BOOK.]It tells you about her when she was young, her family, her boyfriends that she as gone out with and her career. It is very interesting to read and, and as soon as you start reading it, you probably won't want to put it down. I got so interested in it and i didn't realise that i had got half way through. It was revealed that Drew's drug and alcohol addictions were part of a family tradition that dated back to her famous grandfather, John Barrymore. ALTERED STATES-The Movie I Saw Twice Two Weeks in a Row

Review Date: 2008-03-09
I remember seeing ALTERED STATES when it first opened in Connecticut in 1980 and as I recall enjoyed it to the tune of about four or even five stars. My three star rating above is based on my recent screenings of the DVD and reflects how my film tastes have changed with the onset of "senior citizenship." My memory of the script excludes the harsh language of the theater release and must have been altered by the TV edited version, which I perceived to be genuinely classier if not just cleaner than the DVD and theater release.
The plot involved a Harvard scientist, Professor Eddie Jessup, conducting experiments on himself with a hallucinatory drug while isolated in a sensory deprivation chamber to enhance any drug induced effects. To his great satisfaction he believes that these experiments may be causing him to change genetically (i.e., externalize his drug induced delusions which Dr. Jessup believes, reflects something profound about our origins).
On seeing ALTERED STATES in the theater I couldn't help but be struck by the intelligent script, fine acting and very excellent screen graphics. Although I couldn't understand why Paddy Chayefsky walked out during the production of ALTERED STATES, It was still a very good and enjoyable film, all things considered.
This film is really a 70's movie because of the drug related topics it deals with and the colorful screen graphics which reflect much of the pop artwork associated with the drug culture of 60's and 70's. I thought William Hurt and Blair Brown made a wonderful pair of university "wiz-kids" and enjoyed their performances. I also believed the plot to be at least partially inspired by Carlos Castaneda's books.
This was another in a series of sci-fi films that I talked my wife into seeing with no regrets. It was unusual that we had to see this film in two showings because the local police and theater management dramatically appeared in front of the audience to clear the theater due to a bomb threat just as the plot was getting really engaging. Theater management permitted the audience to either return to their seats or see it during another engagement. These circumstances permitted us to see the film twice in two weeks for the price of a single admission.

I'm not a big Ken Russell fan. I've found his movies to be a mixed bag of nuts. However, ALTERED STATES is Russell's most coherent and, to me anyway, enjoyable film. It's a love story of sorts, wrapped in the trappings of sci-fi and hallucination. William Hurt is quite believable as Eddie Jessup, a scientist with a bent toward mystical, mind expanding experimentation. He is a seeker and a complete nut by his own admission. Blair Brown is Emily, a brilliant anthropologist who falls in love with Eddie almost upon sight. The two marry and reproduce (one of the kids is played by Drew Barrymore), while becoming academic superstars. In spite of their mutual success, Eddie is sick of it all. He longs for the old days when he and his partner, Arthur (Bob Balaban) used to conduct wild, sensory deprivation experiments in a saline-filled isolation tank. Those were the days! Soon, Eddie gets a chance to travel to Mexico to try out a mushroom concoction that causes Eddie to hallucinate / see visions, etc. Eddie brings some of the brew back to his lab, where he begins using it to enhance his iso-tank experimentation. This becomes the center of his life, and his marriage suffers for it. Emily cannot stop loving him, no matter what she does. Now, through the drug / isolation trance experience, Eddie has tapped into a way to actually regress physically into a proto-humanoid! This culminates in a mind-melting confrontation between the forces of ultimate nature and Emily's love for her crazy husband. Which is the stronger? This movie sort of reminds me of David Cronenberg's take on THE FLY. At least in a "love vs. mad science" way. Highly recommended...

If your the phylisophical type or you have ever experimented with LSD, then you might appreciate this movie if you smoke grass.
An insane doctor of research experiments with mind altering drugs mixed with a water tank to cause hallucination. He is on a mad persuit to find the one consciousness and his primordial self. Does he find it?
Watch the movie and find out.
Descent movie with good special effects for the time.

If you're die-hard Drew fan, you'll most likely be disappointed in this book. It's not all it's cracked up to be.
My advice? Stick to "Little Girl Lost" - much better look into her life, and it's written with her own words.
I'm not completely knocking this book - it's cute, but not so chock-full of information.

Drew Barrymore is a delight to watch, she reminds me a little of her character in Never Been Kissed, the part where she was kindah popular. She wears sexy dresses in this and sings! (I didn't know Drew sings)
And Eric Bana is so handsome! He's a bit of a sleezeball at first (lies and steals) but by the end, he's changed some. Eric Bana is also such a hunk! Someone should really put him in more projects we can watch, I mean I like he's acting work too--so subtle yet powerful.
Drew should do more romantic comedies!

Drew Barrymore was too cute and innocent, but not bad. Eric Bana playing the obsessed poker-playing pro was boring and somewhat of a veiled ripoff of Matt Damon's excellent character in the superior movie "Rounders."
Even though you get to see some "Real World poker players" such as Phil Helmut, Daniel Negreanu, Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson," it didn't help the awful plot of pitting father (Robert Duvall) against son (Eric Bana).

Nice film to watch on dvd.... I would say it is the middle of the road average in terms of movies out there on the market today.
The acting and storyline are good and very solid throughout... Eric Bana's character is a professional poker player in Las Vegas struggling with some issues like a difficult time making a commitment in the romantic department. His character also has issues with his professional poker playing father who placed poker far and above his family. These issues seem to be resolved by the end of the movie in an understated kind of way.

If you enjoy watching people play poker, you might like this movie. Otherwise, don't waste your time. The characters and story are boring. I didn't care what happened to any of them, which turned out fine, since nothing really happened to any of them . . .

I really don't have anything against Drew Barrymore, and it is too bad that she got into drug and alchohol abuse at such a young age, but without the drugs she still is a major airhead deluxe. Just listen to her when she's on Jay Leno or David Letterman. I remember a few years ago she was all psyched when she was on the tonight show with Jay Leno because she learned a few things about politics and she had to share that knowledge with the audience. Wow what a major airhead!!!! She probably wouldn't be in movies if she hadn't been in commercials and movies when she was very young. There might be a few teenage girls that might be interested in this book but most should steer clear of this biography.

After reading this biography my opinion on Drew Barrymore changed 100%. The authors challenge the way she is so often presented in the media throughout the book by demonstrating her bizarre upbringing and precocious achievements. Although ditzy would sometimes be a good word to describe her I now realise she's extremely hard working and dedicated to her career. Her private life also makes for good reading and it's all presented here in an informative but entertaining way.
