This book is very inspiring and encouraging. It is one of those books that you have to share. I have shared this book with two other women, one was going through a divorce and the other had just end a relationship and was not handling it very well. When I read it, I wasn't going through a hard time or anything but I had saw the author on televison and wanted to hear what she had to say and I was impressed. I thank her for sharing her story and then helping other women live Godly something that you don't really find these days. May God continue to bless her and I pray that she stays close to Jesus.

A must read for the woman who needs hope for the future

Jan has words of wisdom in this book. Wish I would have read it while I was in the midst of some of my turmoil as I might have made some different choices & saved myself additional heartache. Provides a sense of hope for broken dreams and promises. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has suffered ever so slightly or like in my case again & again & again. I find it very soothing to know I am not the only one who has suffered, it is a form of therapy to relate to others in this way. Would be a great gift for a friend in need.

AFTER THE LOCUSTS is just right for those who feel they trying to survive tough times/ wasted years, and want to move on. Author Jan Coleman will take your hand and lead you into fresh hope. The writing is excellent, and you will be pulled into true experiences and personal discoveries---that can make all the difference. As I reader I experienced God's nearness and wisdom through these pages. Scriptures and gems of thought almost leaped off the pages. Now I want to read my Bible more. Women who are single, divorced, lonely, hurting will be especially blessed by this book. Yet it will speak to any woman at any time in her life. It makes a thoughtful gift.

WOW! I couldn't put this book down. God placed this book in my hands at a critical time in my marriage. It helped me realize that I could make it through anything and I would be abundantly blessed if I gave everything to the Lord. Thank you for writing this encouraging book. I am recommending this book to everyone who can benefit from it. I am looking forward to Jan's next book.

Ever read a book that you couldn't stop talking about? After the Locusts is one of those books. Jan Coleman writes as if she's talking directly to you. She shares many stories from friends she's personally encouraged through ruined dreams, and gives you hope that you or someone you know will overcome those wasted years.

This book would be great for a women's Bible study. Highlighting the Book of Joel, Jan Coleman relives her own failed marriage; comparing that loss to the desolation left by a swarm of locusts. After the Locusts touches on coping with the loss of a loved oned, bankruptcy, dealing with troubled teens, divorce, and much more.

You will want to share this book with a friend. I did!

It isn't often that a book wears as well as this one - the material was so advanced at publication that I doubt any current research has caught up! It may be that much extant research claims to have overtaken certain aspects of the innovative metrology (and its performance) in 'Approaches -' but I remain doubtful.
There are no alternative texts available that give the reader so much of an insight into the physical metrology of biotechnology. The concise style and coverage of both the principles and approach to problem solving in measuring biotech parameters is thoroughly enlightened - a novice in the subject gleans as much as an expert.
'Approaches to Physical Measurements in Biotechnology' desrves its reputation - long may it remain in print.

Good, parhaps, says too little about a book which is seriously flawed by a scattering of typos, and yet when these irritations are ignored is essentially an excellent piece of work. This kind of material is difficult to write - had AP done their job 'Approaches to Physical Measurements -' would have been the definitive example of cross-disciplinary authorship. Full marks for the author - curses on the AP editorial staff!

This was a fantastic book. I enjoy books that have both excitement and character development and this book supplied both. The beginning was what got me hooked; it was a book similar in some respects to the DaVinci Code. The mystery of what it was all about was revealed bit by bit and this was the compelling part.
The book was also well written and descriptive of the events, people and the mystery.
Thank you Mr. Nagle

A thrill ride and a page turner, this book reads like the ultimate action/whodunit movie. Nagle effortlessly hooks his reader then leads him/her through clever plot twists, across continents, and into the dark corners of the criminal mind. In Libra he has created a heroine worthy of our respect and our interest. She alone deserves an encore, though her supporting cast in this novel (Sam, Mario, Figlio) are also richly textured and expertly crafted. The only thing I wanted was a map to help me follow Sam & Libra's adventures--but hey, an atlas works, too. Bravo, Mr. Nagle, I eagerly await your next literary gem!

Knowing I am an avid reader, my assistant put this book into my hand as I left the office for a cross-country flight, armed with my laptop and a pile of spreadsheets. Having never heard of Nagle or his work, I shoved the book under my arm to be polite and forgot about it.... until my battery fizzled. Frustrated as only a non-technical type-A professional could be, I fished the Augustus Conspiracy out of my briefcase and started reading. Here's where the reivew starts:

HOT DAMN! What a pleasant surprise to find an unknown author who hits the mark--again and again--on his first try. Within minutes I was so engrossed in the lives of Mario, Figlio, Sam and Libra, their journeys, their perilous predicaments & etc. that I was actually DISAPPOINTED when my flight landed and I hadn't finished the book. After checking into my hotel I put down my bags, sat on the edge of the bed and didn't move until I wrapped up the last pages. A great, great, read. Engaging and intelligent, alternately nail-biting and a crack-up. It will be a shame if Nagle has to wait until his later novels to get the recognition he deserves (like Grisham, Dan Brown, etc.), but it will be well-placed when it comes. Get this book. You won't be disappionted.

Betrayal of a Hustler was an excellent written book. This book had excitement, a whole lot of drama, suspense, greed, love, anger, peace and betrayal. This book kept you on edge of your seats that you didn't want to put the book down. You were very eager to find out what happened next and to whom. The author really put her heart and soul into this book. The characters were so well portrayed that you can relate to this book through real life experiences. I give praise to the way the author portrayed the mother's in the book praying for their children's saftey. Discussing this with others, you are amazed at how you get different opinions of what is going to happen next in the second book. I can't wait until the second part comes out, I know it will be on fire also.

BLUNT, God has truly blessed you with such an amazing gift for writing. Keep the books coming and keep working towards your dream! I know that every book you write will be a best seller also. Keep your light shinning and keep reaching for your goals, dreams and most of all the stars.
God Bless, Janice T. Brewer

B.L.U.N.T. has certainly marked her spot on the urban literary scene. The first in a trilogy, "Betrayal Of A Hustler" is an exceptionally good tale. Reminding us that no matter how rich and powerful a hustler becomes there is always a sad price to pay.
Written with style, this tale tells of friendship, betrayal, love and power. The characters that are behind the excellent cover of this book have their own magnetism that will draw you deep into the pages.

With lush prose and surgical precision, Nahai examines pre-revolutionary Iran, a country hobbled by a social system so oppressive it crushes every one within it. Muslims and Jews live side by side, and each of their worlds is as socially stratified as the other. The novel is narrated by the young daughter of a wealthy Jew and her penniless mother, and she details their increasing desperation as her father falls in love with a Muslim woman. His abandonment of them leaves them emotionally bereft and socially isolated in a world that has no place for them. Brilliant and affecting. You will think about this novel for days after reading it.

Gina Nahai is one the most creative and literate authors working today and should find a regular place on the bestseller lists for her impressive storytelling talent. Her exquisite writing and character development never fails to keep me coming back for more.

Once I started reading "Caspian Rain" I couldn't put it down. Without giving away too much of the story, all I can say is that Ms. Nahai captures your interest with her complex and fascinating characters examined and described in her exquisite prose. You feel the heart and soul of the characters and every moment and situations resonates that much more deeply. I love to read anything Ms. Nahai writes and look forward to her next novel. I highly recommend "Caspian Rain" to anyone who loves to be drawn into a story that takes you to a place about universal themes dealing with real human emotions of loss and acceptance.

Caspian Rain: A literary masterpiece

Review Date: 2008-02-14
"Caspian Rain" by Gina Nahai is a true literary masterpiece and one of the most beautifully written, insightful, touching, and stirring novels of our time. Set in pre-revolutionary Iran, Nahai tells the story of a young girl named Yaas, who faces the tragedy of slowly going deaf at the age of ten and watches in silence and fear while her parents marriage falls apart at the seams. Nahai captures the character of Yaas, who narrates the story, and manages beautifully to express Yaas' sadness, desperation, and incredible wisdom. Nahai's writing style is not only magical and poetic, but she manages to be straightforward in her plot scheme and make the readers feel as if they are sitting in Yaas' bedroom as she whispers her tales into their ears. Nahai's "Caspian Rain" is one of the rare novels one will find that has the power to change lives, touch hearts, and make a difference. This novel hardly falls short of perfection and should be read by all.

Reading Caspian Rain, by Gina Nahai, is like opening a golden treasure chest. Inside it, you will find all kinds of intriguing and fascinating objects. There are several interconnected stories being told . First there is the heartbreaking story of an innocent little girl, Yaas, who desperately longs for the love of her parents. In reading the book, the reader can feel her anguish, as she tries every which way to be noticed and loved. There is the story of the intelligent and ambitious Bahar, Yaas's mother, a story in which the reader can actually taste the bitterness that Bahar is left with, when she realizes that she cannot conquer any of the barriers that will forever keep her from realizing any of her dreams. There is the story of Omid, an emotionally stunted man who, while being the son of privilege, has come from a community which, as a result of being faced with deep prejudices, has had to downplay its' ethnicity and become self loathing . Finally, there are the very rich descriptions of the sounds, sights and smells of Tehran, a fourth character in the novel; a bustling city where the contradictions between the old and the new are funny, tragic and endless. The book was truly unforgettable.

In my opinion Clark's book is worth four years of college theology but without the lectures and exams. It is a simple yet stunning work. Any Catholic interested in his or her faith will surely be inspired by Clark's book. It motivates the reader to reach out for greater understanding of worship and liturgy. Most importantly, Clark provides a powerful Scriptural basis for the Eucharist, as the core of Catholic liturgy.

It is especially helpful that his style is lucid and thought provoking. Clark very adroitly breaks down complex concepts into meaningful, understandable parts and beautifully reassembles the theological thought to move the reader along to the next level. In particular, Clark's examination and explanation of ancient Judaic temple rites and the roles played by different types of sacrifice was facinating.

The book transcends the topic of the Euchrist and boldly challenges the reader to consider the full meaning of the liturgy of the Mass and all its implications. This is a "must read" for anyone serious about their faith. You will not be disappointed.

I have been picking up the Holy Bible recently and began to understand how God speaks to us through the scriptures. My confession is that being a Catholic for more than 22 years, I go to masses but do not really understand the sacrificial ritual of the Eucharist until recently when I start picking up supplementary literatures to help me unravel the complex scriptures. This book is one of these that I hold with great esteem. Right from the Preface, the author quoted from the Book of Haggai which pointed out why the Israelites when back in the Promised Land planted a great deal but harvested little. They tried serving their own material needs and took a lesser priority to the temple of God. God's presence is found in the tabernacle, hence the temple of God. To me, this is a truth manifested from the Scriptures. It also brings out why God loves us so much that He choose to keep his presence with us till the end of time. A Great book and I sincerely recommend this book not only to Catholics, but all Christians, too.

I found Steve Clark's book, Catholics and the Eucharist, an engaging, inspiring, and informative read. The book's theology flows out of Holy Scripture, the Divine Liturgy (of both East and West) and Christian tradition. The result is that one learns not only about Holy Communion but about God Himself and His intention for His children (a little Christian history too). A confession: I'm not even Catholic; I'm Greek Orthodox. But, I have always found Steve's books to be thought provoking, so I gave a book addressed to Catholics a try - and was not disappointed. Great scholarship and a thoughtful presentation! I strongly recommend this book to any Christian - especially Catholics.

I'm a medical student doing my thesis in psychiatry and with a long history of not memorizing neurology very well.

This book helps a lot in that it allows you to create a picture in your mind of how the "classical" patient with a given disorder looks like. I had just read about cluster headaches and the next day in my neurology rotation I saw a patient with one because I recognized him to match the picture in my book. I ended up being complimented for me "diagnostic skills".

The stylized pictures of "classical patients" go a long way in helping you, much more than Netter's, especially if you are a visual learner. If you want a bullet point description of neurological disorders stay away from this book.

Jess Moody is a master storyteller. He writes with great wit and intellegence, and has the ability to touch your soul with truth and insight when you least expect it. Jess is really an American treasure and this book underlines that fact. I can't think of anyone quite like him. I hope he continues to write books in the future. His voice needs to be heard. For those familiar with his other books this is vintage Jess Moody. For those haven't had the opportunity to feast on his stories and the visual images they evoke, this is a great introduction to a master wordsmith.

Club Sandwich is so good, you'll be asking for seconds. Jess Moody is a masterful storyteller with a message of faith, hope and humor. You can tell he's related to Will Rogers, Jr. because he got the "story-telling" gene that captures audiences with rememberances of the rich and famous and common folk.

My husband and I have been reading Club Sandwich as a morning devotional and it's a wonderful way to start a new day. In fact, it's so wonderful, we just purchased 40 copies to give as gifts to our family and friends.

I recommend Club Sandwich to everyone.

So many books on attachment are clinical and overwhelming. The recommendations seem so impossible to incorporate into your life. Not anymore! These authors offer amazing insight (you'll think they've been living in your house), practical advice, and inspiring commentary. I recommend this book to all foster or adoptive parents. If you know someone who is considering adoption or has recently adopted, you'll want to buy this book for them too!

As a parent of three domestically-adopted kids, this book has been a lifeline, a lifesaver and has helped us tremendously in getting the kids settled into a safe and healthy routine.

We're first-time parents and wanted a sane, easy-to-follow book to guide us through some of the rough spots. This book is chock full of common sense techniques, tips and ideas. I consult it at least once a month - but have read it through many, many times.

I bought this book after having read Deborah Grays "attaching in adoption" and I got so much more out of this book and many practical ways to handle our "not so easy to handle daughter". I also thought to myself as I read this book that alot of the advice would probably be valuable to any parent with a "challenging child", not just an adopted "challenging child". This book has helped our family tremendously with no nonsense practical ways to address difficult behaviors. It also taught us how to be compassionate and more sensitive to our daughters past and her current issues.

What a wonderful resource for parents who are struggling to figure out how to move forward with a newly adopted child! Simple and clear, with good things to put into practice.

Nice book, but short on concrete advice

A nice book with a good message of compassion for the damaged children who are adopted into our homes. I liked the style, but was still waiting for concrete advice when the book ended. Short and very general. "Use a light, bantering tone." Well, I agree, but only possible under some circumstances. I have two children adopted from very difficult backgrounds. Parents like me need a lot more than what is in this book.

This is a wonderful and moving story and what's even better is it's true.

This book tells the story of the creative genius Waterhouse Hawkins who paints and creates life size models of dinosaurs way back in the 1800s.

It's a beautiful picture book, I highly recommend it.

This beautifully written and illustrated book is the true story of Waterhouuse Hawkins, an English artist who brought dusty bones to life in sculptures of dinosaurs. The text is suited for reading aloud to young dinosaur lovers, as a self read by third graders and beyond, and as an addition to any dinosaur lovers bookshelf. It is a good book for those interested in art and history as well. A perfect gift.

Amazing story for the dinosaur lover. My 7 year old son kept barrowing this book from his school so much that I decided he needed his own copy and now he wants to go to England to see Mr. Hawkins' Dinosaurs for himself.

very informative

I am a student at West Virginia State College University. I am in Mr. Samples, Children's Literature class. I chose to read this book as an honor book for a caldecott winner. I am not a huge dinosaur fan, but I loved this book. It made it even more fabulous that it is all based on a true story. The pictures were just as great as the book.

Occasionally, from time to time, I like to trick little children. And as a children's librarian in a public library, I have plenty of time and opportunity to do so. So when I'm in the right mood and I feel particularly devilish, I mosey on over to the biography section of the library and ever-so-casually pull out "The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins". After determining that no one has seen me, I then amble over to the picture book area and prominently display the book. The bait now laid, I go back to my desk and wait in anticipation. It doesn't take long. Soon the attractive cover of the book (showing a man holding a dinosaur model with a gigantic dinosaur head looming behind him) catches the eye of some wayward traipsing tot. The child will look at it, squeal gleefully, and pluck the item from the shelf without so much as a howdy-doo. My job complete, I sit back and soak in just how clever I am. You see, the kid doesn't know it yet, but I've tricked `em. They thought they were finding just another of the thousands of millions of dinosaur books out there WHEN IN FACT this book is different. It is a highly educational biography of the man who helped bring dinosaurs to the forefront of the human imagination. The book may well be many a child's first biography for this very reason. So while they think they're getting another dino book, they are in fact getting an entirely different critter altogether. It's an incredibly satisfying feeling to get a child to read something quite as good and original as this particular book. I do not regret my actions in the least.

Author Barbara Kerley explains in her afterword where she got the gumption to write about Waterhouse Hawkins in the first place. She was flipping through a book of dinosaurs one day when she came across a most peculiar picture. In it sat a group of refined late 1800s gentlemen having a formal dinner. In the belly of a dinosaur. Further research yielded a name and a fascinating story. Waterhouse Hawkins was born in London in 1807. He grew up with an interest in animalia, but with the discovery of dinosaur bones he quickly shifted his interests. As an artist, Hawkins worked diligently to create true to life full-sized dinosaur models. Though we today look at them with a critical eye (they had some real innate flaws to them) at the time they were considered the cutting edge of scientific vision. Hawkins grew in prominence (in no small part due to the aforementioned let's-eat-dinner-in-a-dinosaur idea) and even created a group of them for the grand opening of the Crystal Palace at Sydenham Park. Unfortunately, once Hawkins moved to America he was bound to come into contact with that nefarious New York politican, the corruptous of the corrupt, "Boss" Tweed. Though Hawkins had been given funding to construct a museum of dinosaurs in Central Park, Tweed diverted funds and (adding injury to insult) probably hired a group of goons to destroy Hawkins' models. But did our intrepid expatriate give in even then? No, sir! He went on to create the development of life on Earth at Princeton and made dinosaurs for the Smithsonian. By the time he died he'd lived a rich and wonderful life.

Barbara Kerley backs up all her interesting Hawkins info with a remarkable Author's Note section at the end of the book encompassing the models, the artist, Tweed, the Crystal Palace, as well as illustrator Brian Selznick's works. And the text is remarkably interesting. In fact, it closes by pointing out that because Boss Tweed's goons buried many of Hawkins' models, they may still be located somewhere deep beneath Central Park to this day. Brian Selznick is just as laudable an artist in this venture though. First of all, the book is presented as a kind of 1800s document. The title page is part announcement to a theatrical presentation part scholarly text. At the end of the book we can see the original menu feasted upon by Hawkins and his scientific cronies in the belly of one of his models. The book is perhaps most remarkable because of its dark moments. And it is here that Selznick really shines. Our encounter with Boss Tweed shows a gray formal portrait of the man with watery malicious eyes. After the destruction of his creations there's a remarkable two-page spread of Hawkins holding his head in sorrow in the midst of complete and utter destruction. The next pages show a rainy windswept Central Park with a single black figure making his way across the expanse. Heck! There's even a section at the back of the book showing how Hawkins once drew his dinos and how we know they look today.

The most difficult task of any biographical picture book is make the subject both interesting and factual. Kerley and Selznick have done this with aplomb. And unlike some life stories transferred to a mere 48 pages or so, this book has a distinctive rise and fall to the action. All in all it's a remarkable story in an attractive package that any small child could instantly take to. One of the best picture book biographies I have ever had the delight to read. A must-have for any dino-addled child.
