Besides providing a peek at the editor's point-of-view (always useful), this book also gives practical advice for people just starting out in the freelance business. This book has a great deal to offer and would not be a waste of money for anyone interested in writing for magazines.

I strongly recommend that you buy this book. I couldn't put the book down. As useful as it is to read a book from a writer on how to publish magazine articles, it is even more useful to read a book that takes you into the minds of magazine editors. Each chapter is an interview with a different editor. It is like sitting down over a cup of coffee and having a very personal conversation with an editor. Each one reveals different insights into how to write for magazines the right way. Sometimes they differ on points of view, but it is interesting to understand each one's perspective. Editors, who are normally too busy to write each person who has submitted a query letter and explain why it was rejected, offer many explanations in this book. Do you know why so many query letters are rejected? Do you know what pet peeves editors have about writers? Do you know what qualities they look for most in query letters? Do you know how writers can break in at the top magazines? Then get this book!

My boyfriend and I have been together for about 4 months. I've definetly heard of U2 before, but I never really got into them until my boyfriend introduced me to their amazing compilation of songs. Ever since, I have been a die hard fan of U2 just like my boyfriend. I was searching for a christmas gift for my boyfriend, and I came across this book. I orderd it and intended to give it to my boyfriend, but I liked it so much I had to keep it for myself. The book has great and vibrant images and very conclusive articles. This book is a must for and die-hard fan!

If you are a reader of Rolling Stone magazine and a fan of U2, then you should pick up this book. It compiles all the articles, concert reviews, album reviews, random notes, interviews, etc. that have appeared in the magazine on the band. It is interesting to read the earlier stuff before the band became superstars. A great compilation.

I have read most of Jonathan Kozol's books starting in 1991 with Savage Inequalities. Mr. Kozol writes about reality. He doesn't attempt to change it, by giving money. He doesn't try to change it by offering up solutions to the problems of impoverished children. He mere points out what is. I teach in an inner city school and know, that it doesn't matter how good I am, and the fact that I will reach and inspire many children, will not make a whole lot of difference in the rest of their lives. I keep trying for those children I do reach and maybe make a difference for.

This is a great interview, and I also highly recommend his book, True Urbanism.

This is the best A&R resource on the planet. Everything is completely updated every other month (6 issues a year). I used this for my band a while back and scored some major contacts that we later used for film placement. We had a demo deal on the table with Elektra (I cold-called them using this directory) until our bass player decided we needed more studio cash and refused to sign the contract. Anyway, this is a great tool to have if you're looking for music industry contacts. I got my copy at getsigned.com and saved about $10 there.

In this critically acclaimed essay, Christopher Hitchens, in his usual contrarian's irreverent style explores the life and myth of a great political writer and moral philosopher, George Orwell, (1903-1950). In 1946 he wrote an essay in which he foretold that Russia would either democratize or perish.


I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in political philosophy, and history.
