This is a great way to learn about the development of a great city that few non-residents give much attention to. If you are a resident or just interested in the area, this book offers a way to understand the reasons why things are the way they are. With chapters divided by years it can be read from cover to cover as a developing story or used as quick reference for specific periods.

Excellent book. I actually bought this book after glancing through someone else's copy that was a gift. I already had a dvd about Kansas City as told by some its oldest residents that I thought this book was a good read to go along with great video and personal accounts and I was right.

I red the 8 tomes of the story and I couldn't believe everything I learned from this great author. Not only does he retale the typical fantasy story, but he added many historical note as footers.

A masterpiece to read if you want to know more about the true Arthur, Lancelot, Guenevere, Gawain, Mordret, Morgane and more, and not only what they show in movies, simply seeking to please the eye and the movie company bank account.

Allucinant

As a Lewis and Clark historical interpreter, I have found scholary articles dealing with Jean Baptiste or Sacagawea or Toussaint but the authors rarely cover all three. A few recent books have attempted to cover all the Charbonneau family members but failed to be as well researched and thorough as Ms. Colby's. Her insightful and well documented passages allow the reader to understand the motivation that led the Charbonneaus to action and made them crucial to Lewis and Clark and westward expansion. This is the definitive book for understanding the 100-year saga of Toussaint Charbonneau, his young wife, Sacagawea and their son, Jean-Baptiste, who became the prototype American adventurer and pioneer. As I historically present Toussaint Charbonneau, this book will be held in one hand as the ultimate historical reference.

A carefully researched biography of the son of the legendary Native American guide

Sacagawea's Child: The Life And Times Of Jean-Baptiste (Pomp) Charbonneau is a carefully researched biography of the son of the legendary Native American guide and heroine of the Lewis and Clark expedition, Sacagawea, and her French-Canadian husband. Paying attention to both what can be reconstructed from historical record and what scholars remain in dispute over to this day, Sacagawea's Child offers as full a picture as possible of events from before Jean-Baptiste's birth to the circumstances of his demise. Though Jean-Baptiste was flesh-and-blood with flaws like all human beings, he was also a "citizen Indian" who sought to remain mindful of his heritage while living peacefully among people of various cultures, and his story is ultimately one of exploration, wonder, and tolerance. A highly recommended addition to school, public, and reference library shelves, as well as personal biography and American history shelves.

Wow-This was so cool to flip through the pages and read the stories of all the people who have had special ties to Mt Hood and Timberline. Knowing some of the characters only made it more fun. I can pick up this book and virtually turn to any page and enjoy its content. I never knew so many important things and fun times happened in the ski industry at Mt Hood.

Comprehensive, entertaining, and absorbing

In a well-researched production, Jean Arthur interviewed an endless parade of folks who were involved in making history on Mt. Hood, and delved into thousands of pages of archived history. It's obvious that playing and working on the slopes of this Cascade volcano left the author thirsting for the background of how it became a world-famous winter recreational playground and the extent of its gifts to the evolution of skiing.

The book includes lots of little-known facts and keeps up a nice pace as it unfolds over a hundred years of recorded skiing on Mt. Hood. The exploits of early snow-play folks are interwoven with the development of lift-served summer skiing, experiments with various uphill conveyances, racing and jumping competitions, and the chronicles of the building, rescue and refurbishment of historic Timberline Lodge.

You'll encounter escapades with snowcats and crevasses, hilarious trail races, and the task of managing prodigious dumps of snow. Anecdotes about many of the world-class skiers and competitors who have played and trained on Mt. Hood's slopes are interlaced with some general history of the sport of skiing. Jean relates many first-hand stories, and the entire book is extremely well illustrated with photos from a number of collections and many items of related memorabilia.

Whether or not you've personally sampled the delights of her trails, Mt. Hood has contributed a rich history to the sports of skiing and snowboarding, and it is portrayed very eloquently in this book. An entire mountain range of kudos to Ms. Arthur!!

Despite Ms. harlow's life being so wrought with love affairs and scandal, this book stays on task and keeps to reviewing and summarizing her films. I love that it features several of the hard to find and lesser seen Harlow films and include the paper reviews from the film's heyday. I loved it and i think any true Harlow fan will love it too

A Great Non-Fiction Book for Young Readers and Pre-Readers
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-13
This book is a very interesting short explanation of the processes involved in making blue jeans. It uses simple words, but is not a dumbed-down narrative. It's great for that budding process engineer in your household - the one whose favorite question isn't "Why?", but "How?"

The book is illustrated with a variety of stock photographs, many with children as the focal point. This helps grab and maintain youngsters' interest.

Since blue jeans are a common item in most kids' lives, this overview of where they come from can serve as a springboard for many interesting discussions of where other everyday things come from.

The book does contain some unfamiliar words, but at about one sentence per page, the book will not frustrate newer readers - probably 2nd grade level or advanced 1st grade level. It's also a great book for reading to younger kids.

Highly recommended.

King Arthur. Who was he? Was he real? If so, when did he live, and where? Who exactly is this Merlin character? Today there are countless novels that retell his timeless legend. But what are the facts? What is actually certain? This little guide, filled with lavish illustrations, provides a concise overview of the traditions underlying this timeless story, and of the sites in Europe that are still associated with King Arthur and his court. Recommended for anyone with an interest in this most romantic and persistent of legends.

Best book of the early 20th Century, possibly

Review Date: 2007-07-18
During my youth, in the 1950s and 1960s, I scoured used book stores for the book that would "talk to me" without the usual gloss of hypocrisy. I'll always remember the day fondly when I found this one. I've read it three times, and whenever I need a bracing renewal of wholesome opinion I turn to selected entries in this book. It captures something refreshing about the 1920s that has been lost. I should warn you that the two books that claim to be a sequel to this one are pathetic documents of editorial cowardice possibly pandering to a descent in intellectual taste. Don't buy them (I Believe: The Personal Philosophies of Certain Eminent Men and Women of Our Time, edited by Clifton Fadiman, 1939 and Living Philosophies: The Reflections of Some Eminent Men and Women of Our Time, edited by Clifton Fadiman, 1990). When I read The Great Roob Revolution by Roger Price I understood the underlying currents of regressive climate of opinion that accounts for the loss of intellectual honesty. Long live the one and only 1931 version, Living Philosophies: A Series of Intimate Credos.
