You won't regret the time or money spent on this book. Just read it. AFTER you've read the book, watch the movie. Robin Williams is a master. There's not much more I can say, because once you experience this tale for yourself, you won't need someone else's words to describe it.

The role of "fiction" in the midst of horror so stark it cannot be endured: this is the central premise of Jurek Becker's holocaust novel Jacob the Liar. Jacob Haym, a prisoner in a Jewish ghetto toward the end of World War Two, is mistakenly caught out after curfew, and ordered to the camp office. While there, he overhears a radio report that the Russian army is nearby; amazingly, the camp officials allow him to return to the ghetto. When he tells the others what he has heard -- that salvation is perhaps 300 miles away -- no one believes him until he makes up the lie that he has a secret radio (Possession of a radio by ghetto inhabitants was a serious infraction, punishable by death). This single ray of hope, though, is not enough for his neighbors and co-workers; since Jacob has a radio, surely he can give them more frequent updates. Hence, Jacob becomes a "liar", inventing radio reports of the war coming ever closer to the camp, and with its approach the promise of salvation. The role of hope in the midst of seeming hopelessness is central to Becker's stark novel. Jacob tries to "give up" his lies several times, but discovers that the community has come to depend on him. With the advent of his radio reports, suicides in the ghetto have stopped. A different "spirit" is in the community. If Jacob stops his wholly fictionalized "radio" reports, the former hopelessness would return. What is better: a pleasant lie or unblinking verity? Becker's novel does not make for happy reading. Hope, in the end, was a chimera. Nonetheless, this is a magnificent book, and worthy of wide readership. Becker's characters -- every one of them -- is fully drawn, and believable. One truly feels Jacob's dilemma, and his absolute frustration with the role of "sage" he has unwittingly thrust upon himself. The book jacket indicates the book has been made into a movie -- I will be looking for the film at our local video store.

This is a story about Jacob, who lives in the ghetto, world war two, and by one simple small white lie, brings into the immposible life at the ghetto, a small glimmer of hope. People stop commiting suicide, lovers start talking about marriage, old rivals remind each other of long forgotten debts. All the while, their hard miserable lives go on.

It's one of the most sensitive, realistic and sad books I have ever read. Don't miss it.

The ending is one you will never forget.

"JACOB THE LIAR," by Jurek Becker is a good example of how humane a person can be despite the place and situation that he/she is found. In this case is inside the ghetto, where Jacob Heym, a jew prisoner of the Germans accidentally overheard the news of a German radio saying, "troops succeeded in halting the Bolshevist attack 12 miles from Bezenika." He spread the news with the good intention of bringing hope and faith to the abandoned people there. And to stop the suicides that were committed due to the desperation of no help. Unfortunately, time past and nothing happened until one day someone betrayed them and went with the Germans, who immediately responded to this in search of the imaginary radio. The book is great as the movie, except that imagination plays a big role here so stop wasting time and check it out.

This set sold at our bookstore for $49.99, and one was left so I grabbed it. So far I have read Thunderball, Man with the Golden Gun, Goldfinger, Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker. Having read Ian Fleming years ago, I highly recommend his prose. If you are at your local bookstore and see this set, you really should buy it.

Trouble getting your virtual action-loving older teens to read? Introduce them to the "real" James Bond. Ian Flemming crafts spell-binding episodes sure to pull any modern day kid off the internet for a few hours of fascinating reading.

I bought this set for my husband's birthday - he's a long-time James Bond fan. He really likes it.

I just received this set as a Christmas gift and I'm pretty sure my son and daughter-in-law did not pay $500 for it, so I don't advise buying it here. However, anyone who loves the Bond films should read the books. Over the years, I have read them all several times and now I have an excuse to read them again. A warning though: they are addictive and after you read them all you will wish there were more. Each one is a fast, fun read and they will go quickly. One more word of warning: If what you like best about the movies is the gadgets, you'll probably be disappointed. While Bond did have a briefcase with a couple of concealed weapons and he did drive an Aston Martin in Goldfinger, it wasn't tricked out with all of the gadgets like in the movie and there were no submarine cars or invisible cars, etc. You can read about a flying car in Fleming's Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang, but it's not a part of this set. If you want to know the real Bond, get this set and enjoy.

Of course you cannot get this at Costco for $15. Thats ridiculous. Don't take my word for it, try for yourself. Or search online at the Costco store. And No, I'm not a seller.

Its a nicely packaged set. All there. A must have for any Bond reader. The Bond books have things the movies tend to lack. They have depth of character. A greater sense of pace and even realism.

There are suprisingly few 007 book collections out there. This is nice and stylized.

i bought this for my brother who started taking piano lessons a while back, and it's got a great selection of some the most beautiful music i've ever heard (i love john williams). good if you love jurassic park, etc. & many other timeless musical scores!

If you are looking for a book with various themes of John Williams, look no further. This book contains many of his great hits from, like the book says, 1969-1999. It includes the themes from Born of the Fourth of July, Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Jaws, JFK, Schindler's List, E.T., Close Encounters, and Superman. It also includes Duel of the Fates, The Imperial March, Luke and Leia (for all you Star Wars fans), Cadillac Of The Skies, Hymn to the Fallen, Seven Years In Tibet, Scherzo For Motorcycle and Orchestra, and many more. This is the best piano book in the world.

This book has all of Williams's best. The songs sound really good on the piano and are easily reconizable. I recommend it to any John Williams fan.

This is probably going to sound crazy to most people out there, but I actually bought this book for my 38 year-old boss! He is an AVID Spongebob fan, even going as far as to tape new episodes and make sure to watch Spongebob marathons. He got into it with his 4 year-old son, and they can't get enough. This book was great to put a smile on everyone's face and poke fun at my child-like boss.

This joke book has perfectly innocent humor aimed at kids in the age range of 5 to 9. As a parent, it's refreshing to find material you feel comfortable in letting your kids read. I genuinely enjoyed participating in the humor with my 6 and 7 year old daughters. We also like to watch the nickelodeon show, Spongebob Squarepants, together as a family. It's one of the few shows I consider acceptable on network television.

This oddly titled book is a smash hit with my four year old daughter! She loves it so much, she begged me to take it to school and read it to her classmates. I did, and they all loved it. The jokes are content appropriate, and mix just the right level of complexity with the silly and offbeat. The jokes are almost all wihtin reach of the average four year old, and yet appeal to older kids as well. If you are looking to introduce your child to humor, jokes and riddles, this book is a great one to start with.

This little book (41 pages, not including title page, and so forth) was a great big hit with my son. Most pages contain one or two wonderful black-and-white drawings of SpongeBob or one of the other Bikini Bottom gang, and a couple of jokes. The reading level is right on for Ages 4-8, and the jokes are funny enough to entertain older SpongeBob fans! My son (a Spongebob fan, like his father!) bought this book with his own money, and he considers it money well spent. We both recommend this book to you.

I started watching the tv program with my children and got insteadly hooked. This is just plain 'ol don't-take-yourself-so-seriously humor. As you read, you'll find yourself laughing out loud. I bought it for my children but it's fun for grow-ups as well!

A book I read for review at work.

Sabrina ad Dreama have a bad time when Harvey and her school's Football team decided to stop cleaning themselves after they win a match, due to the silly superstition. Much to Sabrina's horror, Dreama had cast a dreadful spell that would turn any supertitions as real as possible and they no longer recognise the world they are in. They can't cast any spells cause any spells would have a reverse effect. Salem has it worse, since Black cats are pretty much bad luck to any supertitious being.

Great book. I've finished it all in one go. A page turner and fast pace. A book thta would pull you in as soon as you sit down and read it.

We Win! Thats whats happening in Westbridge High, the football team seems to be winning games all of a sudden. So Brad says that all the football players should not change underwear, take showers, or even change socks, and of course the football players do just that! But once Sabrina finds out she is determined to stop all this sill superstition and get the football players to take showers. Just then a spell is cast, superstitions start to really come true. So when someone walks under a lader or brakes a mirror they have bad luck! What will Sabrina do?

As an 8th grade teacher, I love any book that keeps my kids reading, and according to the girls in my class, this is a must read. So I tried it, and really enjoyed it, even though I'm a bit older than the target market. Very cute, and it reminds me of my kids at school!

Since there are several synopsis already listed, I'll just say, Laura Baker gives a true feeling of the southwest, and I compare her favorably with Tony Hillerman. Her descriptions are eloquent and I look forward to reading more of her books. Having recently moved from New Mexico to the midwest, reading Legend made me homesick.

With the chasm between their belief systems, the probability of a long-term relationship is remote, especially if a mass murderer has any say.

With only her second modern day Native American romance, anyone gazing at the stars will realize that Laura Baker is heading on a path that ends at her being considered a LEGEND. Like her first novel, the story line is a marvelous romantic suspense that brilliantly merges Native American folklore with psychological terror wrapped within a heated romance. Fans of the sub-genres need to read the works of Ms. Baker if they want to peruse some of the best Native American romantic suspense books in the last few years.

Ainii and Jackson are all too human in their dreams and fears. All too human in their desires. But within them lies the power to face the beast and find the balance. Laura Baker does a superb job blending mysticism and romance into a stunning story of good versus evil . . . of love. This is the first of her books that I've read, but it certainly won't be the last. I just ordered Stargazer!

I guessed quickly who was the Yenaldlooshi, but still I was surprised by the reality. I almost cried when the Yenaldlooshi was killed, for I did not want him to die. Even though he was responsable for a series of brutal murders. He was only human, battling a great evil. That is essentially what this book is about, the battle between good and evil. Jackson Walker, who's own mysterious past leads back to the reservation and Ainnii's father, has no belief in the supernatural, until he is forced to face its reality. I couldn't leave the book until I had read all the way through and even now, my mind shifts through the hidden facets of the story and in my heart, there is a deep saddness for the Yenaldlooshi, the true victim in the novel.

My 2 1/2 yr old son loves the Car movie, the characters and LOVES this book set. He has just as much fun taking the books in & out of the box as he does reading them. He practically has the books memorized to read to himself. The box is holding up surprisingly well considering that he carries it a lot of places & often to the grocery store!

Keeps my 4 month old entertained with all the wonderful colors and I don't have to worry about him grabbing a page and ripping it while we are reading. Being from Georgia the whole family loves the book about Mater :)

My son loves them. He carries them around in the little case they come in. Great gift idea.

My two year old who's favorite show is Cars loves these books. They are very simple books that each tell a watered down portion of the story. Each book is from a different character's POV from the movie; Lightning, Mater, Sally, and Doc.

The books are very sturdy which is great for when one of my children decides to get rough with them. The little case they come in is cute and while my boy likes carrying it around, it's made of a much thinner cardboard and I can tell it won't last very long.

All in all, I'm very happy with this product.

The first day goes great, but when day two rolls around, things don't go too well. Both of the guys are completely ignoring the girls. What did the two do? This book was really good book. It's about Mary-Kate and Ashley both like a boy. And there trying to ask them to the Spring Fling. But before they can the boy of Mary-Kate's dream's is going out with her roomate. (old). And Ashley's crush is going out with somebody else too! Should they find new dates?? Or get revenge!

This book was another great Two Of a Kind book. When you read the back of the book it says that Mary-kate and Ashley are going to get revenge on the boys (Ross and Grant). Grant dumped Mary-Kate for her best friend Campbell, and Ross dumped Ashley for Dana, the most popular stuck-up girl in first form. Could things get any worse? Yes!

this is a great book. you personally make your own stories and the best part is the stickers arent permanent. cool.

The stickers peel off a little too easily(which is sometimes a good thing)...some even just want to fall off the pages...but it's a cute book with great stickers.

This book is a lot of fun for Lilo & Stitch fans of all ages. The stickers remove and attach easily, you can move them around (they don't stick permanently), and when you're finished, it makes a nifty picture/story book of the movie. Lots of fun!

This book has nice stickers, most are stills from the movie and the others are what I call "character poses." If you like Lilo & Stitch then you'll like this book.

DK and Disney have put together a smart litte book of sticker fun from "Lilo & Stitch" which is sure to please. The kids just love it. The color pictures of the characters are really well done and vibrant. This is a very good book full of fun for all.

This first volume in the set of 6 (I sincerely hope that there will be more to come) is, in my opinion, essential reading for every Christian.

We in the USA need to unlearn everything that we were told about "the big, bad, Red Russians"... This set is a good start in introducing westerners to the amazing and profound depth of Russian spiritualism!

Just read it, you have to, no description can give it justice. All I can say is this, it's comparable to Issac of Nineveh's "On Ascetical Life" in its beauty, depth, and penetrating words of love, peace, and prayer. Just read it, this book will change you forever.

While preparing a lecture on Surat Shabd Yoga, I came across the Philokalia and thought it might be useful in my talk. "Surat" is a Sanskrit word for "Soul", "Shabd" is the Sanskrit word for "Holy Spirit". "Yoga" simply means "To Yoke". Hence, Surat Shabd Yoga is the process of connecting the soul to the Holy Spirit. In the "Little Russian Philokalia", Saint Seraphim of Sarov taught that the main aim of Christian life is to acquire for oneself the Spirit of God. His amazing and supernatural conversation with N.A. Motovilov on "The Acquisition of the Holy Spirit" is included in this volume.

Simple, elegant, uplifting, and profound.

I am glad to see that we now have a Russian companion volume to the traditional Philokalia.

I found that the pictures of St. Seraphim spoke to me too.

I've been really enjoying the Russian Philokalia series, more so, even, than the original Philokalia and the sayings of the Desert Fathers.

From an evangelical perspective the Desert Fathers can often come across as legalists whose religion has less to do with a Christ centered faith, than it does with trying to outdo each other in their rules of piety (ie: the argument about whether a true monk would (a) never lay eyes on a woman or (b) be able to look at a woman and not even recognize her as being of the opposite gender).

The original Philokalia, on the other hand, reads more like a text on Hindu meditation: weird mystical concept and breathing techniques mixed with Christian references and other rules for achieving enlightenment (or seeing the uncreated light of God).

The Russian Philokalia series, on the other hand, especially this volume of the writings of St. Seraphim, are far more "down to earth" or at least more familiar. Seraphim's sayings, for example, are generally rooted in a Spirit-centered faith, and hence, more accessible to evangelicals and others looking at Orthodoxy for the first time. I don't know what makes them more accessible. Perhaps its because these men lived closer to our own time; perhaps its because the Orthodox church in their day had been influenced by Western thinking; or perhaps its because they were simple Russian peasants. In any case, I really enjoyed this series of books and would readily reccommend them to interested readers.
