Last year, my daughter read this book and came home saying it was the best book she had ever read. She recommended it to me. At first, I was a little bit skeptical. I thought it was just a little fairytale for children, but I was wrong. My daughter began learning and sharing new and healthy lessons with me that she had learned from the book. Now, I can't wait to read it.

Excellent read!

This book is a great display of imagination and creativity...but my dictionary does not have any entry for "whangoodle"...then again, it also does not have an entry for "disestablishmentarianism". My 10-yr old daughter & I love reading this, and I've noticed my 14-year old son listening in as well!

I brought this book for my god daughter and i wanted to read it first so she was able to come to me to talk about the book. It is a wonderfully well written book that allows the reader to open their minds to pure imagination, where nothing can stand in your way. Julie Andrews Edwards has produced an amazing book that i would recommend to any age group! Even us big children at heart. The use of words is very different from what you see now a days and she hasn't tried to 'dumb it down' for children it talks to them as though they were they stood in front of the professor learning his teachings. The book was brilliant fun to read and i can not wait till my god daughter starts to read it.

A delightful tale

I would say that I'm very much like Professor Savant. I need a dose of the imagination of a child to help me along the way. The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles was the kind of book I would have loved reading as a child. I would have read it over and over again savoring each nuance of color and flavor that this book has to offer. As an adult, I feel that there are some lessons in the story that seem a bit forced but the concept that the imagination is a powerful tool is a good reminder for kids of all ages.

It is the story of the three Potter children who meet Professor Savant at the zoo one day and then later again on Halloween night. He tells them about a mysterious creature called the Whangdoodle. They're not sure whether to believe him or not. But he offers to train them so they can go to Whangdoodleland and meet the last of the Whangdoodles.

The professor teaches the children how to perceive and imagine more deeply than they had before. Lindy, the youngest, learns most quickly. But soon they all put on their 'scrappy caps' and take several journeys to this land of imagination. They find many wonders and a few dangers along the way.

I was worried that the book would falter in the end. But it was quite an interesting way of wrapping things up. The message voices many of the questions we have about life now even though the book was written more than 30 years ago.

This is a well-written book full of wonderful detail and an engrossing story. I recommend this for any child and more than a few adults who need to revisit the imagination of their childhood.

I think this book was read to me in school many many years ago. I remembered it as an adult and purchased it for sentimental reasons. I think it reminded me of The Secret Garden in a way. The seashell cottage was the perfect hideaway that every little girl could dream of making her own. I loved the story of Mandy and found myself wistfully wishing that I had a place like that as a child. What a wonderful story that Julie Andrews has created. I will cherish it always and keep it to pass down to the young girls in my family.

My favorite book as a child!

I read and reread this book about 5 or so times as a child. I simply loved the adventure of it all about the protagonist discovering a home away from home that she could call her very own. This is a fascinating tale for children who love to live in their adventurous daydreams and who love secret hiding places of their own where they can just "be". Although this is a book I would reccomend to children, I wouldn't reccomend it to adults as the plot and drama is very minimal. Adults would be bored of this whereas most children, especially little girls, would be fascinated by the simplicity and beauty described within its pages.

Mandy is obviously the protagonist of this story. She is an orphaned child living in an orphanage with other children of the state. She has a friend that she bonds with over time and gets along farily well with eveyone else, as well as the staff, until the day that mandy climbs over the wall of the orpganage and discovers an abandon cottage! She decides from that moment thatthe cottage is hers and her secret hideaway. She begins to do things that are uncharacteristic of her such as lying about where she has been, stealing from the orphanage supplies to take and supply her new home with, and is suddenly secretive with everyone, even her best friend. Read on to find out about Mandy and what she goes through as a child trying to make a cottage into a home and keep her secret place just that... secret.

Although this book is aimed to appeal to girls approximately between the ages of 7-13, I was in college when it was first released. Being a hugh fan of Julie Andrews, I of course bought the book and was amazed that I could not put it down! To me, a great book has the ability to transport the reader from their day-to-day life into another time and place. I was mesmerized by this charming story from beginning to end as I am sure every child who reads it will be. Mandy is not only a sweet, likeable orphan, but she is very positive role model for children, showing that if you try hard enough, you can make your dreams come true. I admire her spirit and courage to go after her dream of someday having a real family.
I had read that Julie Andrews lost a bet to her teenage step-daughter Jenny and her promise was to write her a story, which turned into this wonderful book! Lucky for us readers, the result of that bet gave us our first glimpse at yet another one of Julie Andrews' many talents. It's been 30 years now since I first read Mandy and I still have my original version of this book in a prominant place on my bookshelf, along with a hardback copy of Mandy and each updated version that has been printed. All the young girls in my family have read this classic book and loved it as much as I do. I only hope someday a movie version of this beautiful story is produced.

Julie Andrews is no stranger to the world of books and it's apparent in her biography. It's a well written book and Julie's personality shines through it. The details of Julie's early life may be more of a revelation to the readers than the parts of the book dealing with her broadway success and beyond. Still, Julie presents her feelings about some well-known events, such as being given massive amounts of coaching by Moss Hart in preparation for her role as Eliza Doolittle. This is a classy book about a classy lady.

If you find Julie Andrews interesting, you will enjoy reading this book. Her early years were not sugar coated. It was interesting to learn how she entered show business and grew in her career. I was sorry to see the book end with her coming to America to film "Mary Poppins." I thought it would continue past her first film with Disney..... This book is easy, interesting and pleasurable reading!

This is a good book, but would've been better if not so dry. Julie Andrews had an extraordinary life and if it had been written more warmly and less like a travelogue it would've been better.

I am certainly a Julie Andrews fan and have been since first seeing her in Mary Poppins. This books is quite an accomplishment and must have been quite an undertaking. Congrats Julie! The details are full and explanations are vivid. However, sometimes I felt I got a series of facts and recollections of events but not how they impacted Julie or how they made her be who she is today. There were chapters that left me with more questions. Maybe it is the British way of explaining life circumstances and emotions, or maybe it would have made the book too long or maybe it will be apparent if there is a Part 2. I concluded that the public Julie Andrews we know and love has archtypal qualities that our culture craves and we want to know more. But, as an author she owes us nothing and she can write the book any which way she wants. Thanks for the book Julie. I hope there will be a second one. And someday I would love to have tea with you and ask all those questions.

I have been an admirer of Julie ever since I first saw her in Mary Poppins so many years ago. What a joy to listen to her tell the story of her early years up until the time when she is on a plane heading toward Hollywood to make that film. She has overcome a great many obstacles in her fascinating career. I certainly admire her even more now after hearing her tell her story. This was so interesting that I wanted to hear more. This is a must read!

Rather than pre-order the book, I waited until the CD came out to see if, as I suspected, it would be narrated by Julie Andrews. Julie's words in her own voice add so much to her story. I can't wait until the next installment! The only criticism of the CD is you have to turn the volume up all the way to hear it, at least while in the car. It brought back such pleasant memories as Julie related stories of her appearances on TV, with Carol Burnett, and on the Ed Sullivan Show, and her own show. Some of the excepts can be found on the internet. Wonderful performer. A voice not to be forgotten, nor repeated.

I knew full well that when I heard that Julie's memoir would be coming out that I would devour it in no time flat. I didn't know however that there would be the unabridged audio-book, read by Julie herself. She has a beautiful speaking voice (of course) and she speaks with authority, knowledge, grace, and humor. We have heard her speak of her family life, her step-father introducing her to singing at a very early age, and her touring across much of greater England but never before have we been given the backstage pass! Julie's history is as rich as it is heart-wrenching. Life wasn't the "Spoon Full of Sugar" or "My Favourite Things" far from it. What we discover about Julie is that she was given the tools of a bygone trade and used them to the best of her ability. Her writing is a triumphant for both Theatrical history and to the preservation of cherished and most beloved icon.

There should be:

1. A Theatre with her name on it.
2. A recording studio/sound stage bearing her name
3. Voice Lessons/Master classes as taught by Dame Julie herself!

I was extremely impressed with Julie Andrew's memoir because she shared her life experiences in such amazing detail. She takes the reader from her very young life into the early years of her professional career. She blends both compliments and concerns for those who influenced her career choices, as well as speaking honestly about her family. Her pace and perfect diction made her recordings of her memoirs a perfect read as well. This book will be a joy for all Julie fans.

I just finished listening to AT HOME. I am a fan of Julie Andrew's and it was fun to listen to her actually read the book. Sometimes we think that stars have always had a glamorous and wealthy life...we forget about how they got there. AT HOME is a true example of that. Julie's life was not all glamour and fame...she had a rough childhood and many tribulations as an adult. She struggled and worked hard to become the star she has become. I admire her even more. A great audiobook.

Great as a bedtime reader

Review Date: 2007-04-16
At the suggestions of a much respected librarian, I recently started seeking out more advanced books to use at bedtime reading with my six year old daughter. While I fully intend to rely on the classics I loved, such as Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little, the Oz and Narnia books, I wanted to include some new items as well. My daughter has really wanted books with pictures - and fought moving away from that format. This novel is the second 'modern' book I've brought to the bedside and the one with the least illustrations at all. My daughter has yet to complain. The very visual language has helped her make the transition from pictures on the page and pictures in her imagination.

I have to disagree with the author of the book description in Amazon, the fact that every chapter starts with a defined description of Miles really helps set the tone for the start of the chapter. It reminds those of reading where we've been and how Miles feels as his adventure continues. The florid language is also a great vocabulary builder. There are times I have to stop and explain somethings - but that doesn't ruin the story in the least. As a matter of fact, both of us laughed when Miles thought to himself that he didn't understand a thing Little or Mrs. Partridge had said, and neither had my daughter. At least my daughter got an explanation.

This is a fun, thought-provoking novel that should hold up to re-reading as my daughter ages and as a reminder of the adventure before reading the next in the series - whenever it is forthcoming.

This book really says in a very few words all we need to know about living a full, rich, peaceful, serene life.

The illustrations actually filled my heart with those same feelings, eliciting quite a response physically and heartfully.

Add the included CD and it is no longer a question, adding this book to your library is a necessity.

In fact, it would make a good coffee table book.....

The simple text acknowledges that the world is not perfect... it is blemished, and it is up to us to choose whether to "moan or sing" and whether to "count sheep or our blessings".

This will be one I will collect several copies to give away and keep around my house.

5 stars for concept, 3 for lyrics, 5 for illustrations.

Review Date: 2004-11-21
Although labeled for the three and up age range, my experience suggests this book will appeal more to parents and caregivers than to toddlers.

LYRICS: The lyrics repeatedly use words such as "duly" (as in "duly grateful") -- a contrived phrase which appears repeatedly, apparently because it rhymes with "truly grateful."

CONCEPTS: The ideas--gratitude and choices--are important, and do come across, but not to the age group targeted. Too often, the author tells us, rather than shows us.

Some of the book's concepts are simply inappropriate in terms of developmental level for little ones. For example, "There may be times when I lose the light, and let my spirits sink. But I can't stay depressed When I remember how I'm blessed." Three and four year olds talk and think in terms that are both literal as well as much simpler--glad, sad, mad, etc.

For these reasons, and especially for younger children, you may find it helpful to paraphrase the concepts on each page, using language and examples your little person will understand and relate to.

ILLUSTRATIONS. These are excellent. More than the lyrics, they convey the concepts on each page. Very gentle in their impact on the reader.

SONG. As an Art Garfunkel fan, I didn't find his rendition as inspiring as I'd hoped. It's on a short CD, a single track, less than 5 minutes in length. Finally, the tune isn't particularly catchy and it isn't easy to learn.

LYRICS & MUSIC. On the plus side, both the lyrics and music are included at the end of the book, along with the CD in its endcover envelope.

OVERALL: This is a book most suitable for a thoughtful six year old and a caring parent or grandparent to share and discuss.

I read this to my 7 year old in 2 nights. He is not a reader yet, and finding reading material is a challenge in that the things that he can read himself are too simple to interest him. We have two kittens which he loves, and he could identify with the kitten antics in this book. The story-line kept him interested - although he occasionally wanted to flip ahead to look at the next illustration to anticipate the action. The pictures are wonderful, and this is a warm story. When we finished my son asked if there was another book in the series that we could read!

A Must-Read Children's Book

Bonnie Boadicea "Bo" is a little kitten born into a family with a loving mother and father, but not to kind owners. She is the runt of the litter, and doesn't eat much due to her small size. Her father loves her, and to make her feel special gives her a big name, but calls her "Bo" for short.

One day it is time for the kittens to leave their mother, and the nice warm house. They realize that they are going to be hurt unless they escape from Mr. Withers, who was supposed to take them to the pet shop. So all the kittens run in different directions, and are soon scared, wet and hungry.

Bo meets a nice sailor and gets into all kinds of mischief with him on the boat he works on, and is soon a sailing cat with a nice home and a kind owner.

This is a must read children's book that anyone, young or old, would enjoy.

Review Date: 2001-09-07
The CD/book edition of _Little Bo_ is a must for young children. Julie Andrews Edwards reads as well as she sings. This edition adds much to the written text. The CD can be used as a series of short readings. The conclusion of each chapter is accompanied by gentle music that tells the child or parent that there is a natural break. The author researched the book well, and the portions of the book that take place on a fishing boat during a severe storm are very plausible. Henry Cole's soft drawings do much to convey the flavor of the story.

Bo, the kitten, and her siblings were sent away during a snow storm by the owner because their sire was an alley cat. Bo finds a friend in Billy Bates, a sailor aboard a fishing boat. Bo survives a severe storm and the dislike of the boat captain. Billy and Bo leave the boat to find new lives for themselves.

As a child I fell in love with the actress Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. Still an outstanding actress, I enjoyed her recent Princess Diaries, I am continually amazed at her abilities. If singing like a nightingale and acting weren't enough, she has also proven to be equally talented as an author! My eleven year daughter bought Little Bo two years ago with her hard earned allowance money. She couldn't put it down then and frequently goes back to enjoy it over again. She is currently reading it to her five year old sister who can't wait for bedtime now since she so enjoys her bedime story. The only problem is that their eight year old brother runs off with it at the most inopportune times thus wreaking havok! He thought if he could sneak away and read it in hiding no one would tease him. Boys who are almost nine are only supposed to read cool stuff, you know. He, too, found Little Bo irresistable and no longer even tries to hide it. I'm beginning to wonder if Mary Poppins wasn't really a fictional character at all but a chapter in Julie Andrews life. Don't stop now Ms. Andrews. We love you!

While he finds some level of comfort running on his track team, the absence of his workaholic scientist father only makes life more complicated. Jamie accepts the offer, and his adventure of a lifetime officially begins.

Upon his arrival, he quickly finds out that life is going to be quite different. Louise's dwelling place is a one-room cabin with no plumbing or electricity. Despite this, Jamie excitedly listens to his aunt's nature and survival lessons. A number of peculiar events soon transpire, causing Jamie to be conscientious of an alliance he feels with a neighboring wolf pack. He then learns the truth behind the visit and a major secret about his family. Will Jamie return home, or will he stay with his aunt?

This would have been the perfect book to refer to when I was in clinical. We had the MGH Clinical Procedures book and John Snow's manual, but this goes way beyond those two. Like the previous reviewer, I would carry this book before any others. (It is also available for the PDA.) A "must have" resource for your practice or residency.

A perfect book to have during residency.

This is a must-have for anesthesia residency. It contains complete information not only for po/iv drugs, but inhalation agents as well. In addition, the book has appendicies that cover additional information in condensed form for easy reference (categorized drugs and their affect on local, general or regional anesthesia, tables of all anesthetics with their chemical and physical properties, flow-graphs of ACLS and other protocols. If I could carry only one book (beside Morgan and Mikhail) this would be it.
