The framework for teaching students with learning and behavior differences is presented and followed by practical strategies. If you are inclined to remediation it is covered, yet the real emphasis is learning strategies, vocational applications and compensatory devices including computers that students can write what they say. The authors make a point of preparing teachers a parents with the tools to allow a student with a disability tlevel the academic and employment playing fields. Every secondary teacher would benefit, however, the elementary teacher can obtain a view of where the student is heading. For special educators it is must reading.

Not long ago, Allen Sockabasin came to our school and spent the day with the children. He read the book in Passamaquoddy and English and shared stories of his life and culture with the children. He is a wonderful speaker and a great soul. Every child, from Kindergarten to Grade 8, was enthralled with Allen and with the book. What a truly beautiful story. I highly recommend this book to young and old alike. If you have the opportunity to have Allen visit, jump on it. It was a wonderful experience and most definitely buy this book.

Traditional Indian Story to Intrigue Your Child
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-29
The story involves an infant falling off a sled as his Indian family migrates for the winter. Left behind, the boy is kept warm by the animals who come out of the forest one by one.
The author is quoted in the Maine Sunday Telegram, "I have a great interest in our language and in passing down the stories of our people." He learned the story from his mother. In the back of the book, all 23 of the animals are named in Passamaquoddy.

We collect fun cat books and entertaining children's books, and this one is a keeper in both categories. The story is funny, the illustrations are adorable and there was the added bonus of adding some new phrases to our vocabulary --- we now point out the "swagmen" we see and sit down to "have a cup of tea and a bit of a chin-wag."

enchanting story about an endangered species
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-02
This beautifully illustrated book takes place in a small village where signs of a tiger have been noted. The culture is accurately portrayed including the immense value of a dead tiger to the poor village. Nevertheless a small boy wishes the esteemed hunter who is called in bad luck. We then follow the hunter on his quest. He tracks the tiger, who more often misses than wins in attacking prey and are reminded that this hunter has a reputation of never missing. The hunter, indeed, does not miss, but the reader is totally surprised to find he hunts with his camera only! As the hunter leaves the village he winks to the boy, and lets him see the camera. At the end of the story is a page of information about this endangered species with things to do to help.

Perhaps the Finest American Memoir of the First World War
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-14
Hervey Allen's memoir is certainly one of the finest personal narratives of World War One, and perhaps the best American memoir of that war. In my opinion, it is a neglected classic. The narrative covers his unit's march from the area around Chateau Thierry in July 1918 to the Fismes/Fismette area in August. The book begins with Allen's unit on an almost bucolic road march through unspoiled French countryside, and ends with its virtual decimation in Fismette. As the title suggests, the closer Allen and his comrades get to Fismette, the more intense the action, until they are literally facing the fire of a German flamenwerfer attack. The story ends abruptly; in a preface to the second edition, Allen compares the ending to a filmstrip burning out suddenly.

Allen, a novelist and poet, was a keen observer; he gives the reader a vivid picture of what it was like to be an AEF soldier in France. Particularly compelling are his descriptions of the shattered homes, farms, and buildings that his unit occupies as it moves forward, and what they tell him about the original French owners, and the Germans who, in some cases, have left the premises just minutes before.

A Definitive WWI Memoir

Hervey Allen is at his finest in this carefully crafted memoir of his time as a soldier in France. While he is best known as author of the sweeping historical fiction Anthony Adverse, which was a best seller in the 1930s(and later a pretty mediocre movie), he proves in Towards the Flame that he is also able to communicate great depth with an economy of words. This book illuminates that far away time in which young men went off the to fight the Last Great War for reasons that now seem so trivial and also gives a wonderful sense of the French countryside from the perespective of a young soldier. I believe that this book is a hidden treasure of American literature that deserves to be rediscovered.

"..... THIS BOOK HAS BEEN DESIGNED FOR BOTH SCHOLAR AND GENERAL READER.
For the scholar, the manuscript is reproduced photographically, in full.
For the general reader, an edition of the notes appears on facing pages to the manuscript: there is printed a translation of the Latin portion of the manuscript, a transliteration of the Renaissance Greek characters into contemporary symbols, with the errors of the Greek in the notes silently corrected, and a transcription in italics of the English portions of the manuscript....."

A Good Book for Insight

This book is one of three published on translating for King James by the author Ward Allen. These books turn on the light in an otherwise dark room and give insight into the process and labor that went into the translation of the most significant Bible in English history. Featuring the only surviving documents written by an original translator, John Bois, and carefully translated into English, one feels as if one has stepped back into the early 1600's and grappling themselves with task of a lifetime.
