This is a superb children's album. One that I have been listening to for about 16 years now and I am still not sick of it! That is saying quite alot considering it is a childrens album! This album consists of fun songs and stories that teach diversity to children as well as family values and understanding of each family's differences, and all this coming from people such as Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Christopher Reeve, The Fat boys, Pat Benetar, and more! Do your kids a favor and consider finding this album! There is also a book and a video!

From Poverty to Power is a concise and informative guide to the development of the human spirit and how this development can consequently affect the events in your life. It provides a basic understanding of the Laws under which the Universe operates and how you are part of their operation. The author presents this information in a friendly and instructive manner without seeming patronising which makes the book very easy to read. Although written at the turn of the century its themes are still current. A joy to read.

This book is perfect for the new researcher trying to get a good grasp of the principles of fMRI. It covers the concepts, the engineering and experimental design of fMRI scanners and the studies they can be used for. The explanations are clear and made clearer still by the excellent use of analogy and pleasing diagrams. It even covers the basics of experimental design which really helps the novice. The book also comes with data sets which allow one to try out ones image processing skills.
This book is highly recommended for those studying for higher degrees and is almost unique in that it is far more accessible than any of its rivals. Highly recommended.

I have loved this book and its sequel, Fracasso, for twenty years. It is comic, demented and poignant, following Dumas cleverly without sacrificing historical accuracy where the plot intersects known facts. Farce is piled on top of heartbreak: the story wows both the literature major in me and the student of WWII history, but that's not the point. It's the kind of writing you have to put down at intervals, because of the stone that forms in your throat at the ruthless way that Lestienne jams horror, innocence (and its loss), heroism and absurdity onto the same page. Reinhard Heydrich and Walter Schellenberg share the stage with Free French fighters who are unmistakable Musketeers: David Belletoise (Aramis), a handsome Jewish amorist; Pablo (Porthos), a French-African tattooed with a boa on his pimmel; and Breval (Athos), whose love story is even more grim and complicated than his original's. The English translation has a headlong style, and I don't know of any other author who can use so many exclamation points and get away with them -- in the narrative, not the dialogue. I have no idea why this book didn't get a wider public when it was originally in print.

In 1974 I read a blurp that said "The Three musketeers live!" I loved Dumas' book so I looked for this book. Let me say that it is written in the style of the original book, complete with chapter titles. It has a touch of HOGAN"S HEROES and some plain craziness. You have the four musketeers plus the German version of Richelue. It is not an easy read but worthwhile trip. This is for those of us who loved "all for one and one for all."

Together with books by Gurinire, Mseler, and Podhasky (see these) this too is a very important book concerning classical dressage. The text gives the impression of being written with considerable thought...this contrasts somewhat with some modern dressage texts. This text together with Gurnire's is recomendable.

Once you get over the different style of font and familiarize yourself with the vocabulary this book privides for some exciting reading. This man must have been a genius. He provides detail description of how to loosen up your young horse in the shoulders and further work and excercises in a precise way which still pertains to the basics how we ride today. Its sometimes good to go back to the original scourses.

A wonderfully told and illustrated life sketch of the inimitable Gordon Conway, "That Red Head Gal". Conway is a little known, but extremely talented fashion artist and designer from the early 20th century (Worked 1916-1936). Those interested in 1920's fashion and design history should consider including this fine volume in their library today.

`Gourmet's Sweets' by the staff of the magazine `Gourmet' is an older volume (1998), done under the stewardship of Editor-in-Chief Ruth Reichl's predecessor, Gail Zweigenthal. Since the volume is dedicated entirely to desserts, it does not have the primary virtue of almost all the other `Gourmet' books, which typically begin with a large number, usually ten to twelve, of menus for entertaining. This volume fills this tradition with two very specialized menus for `A Garden Dessert Party' and `A Champagne Dessert Party'
The main difference I see in this book, between the style of editor Zweigenthal and successor Reichl, is that the prose is just a bit `breathless', as if the authors are so taken aback by the marvelous offerings that they are just too tickled to deal with mundane matters. Reichl's editing seems to give far more respect to the intelligence of her audience. On the other side of the coin, the text is not infected with those malignant terms spoiling contemporary popular culinary prose such as `signature', `decadent', and `tons of...'.
The best audience for this book is a bit hard to place. On the one hand, true to the `Gourmet' style, many of the recipes are fancy originals or fancy versions of old standards, done up in their best party garb. This means the instructions for recipes are far more elaborate than you may find in more conventional sources. And, the elaborate recipe write-up extends even to those `everyday' desserts. One perfect example is when I compared this book's Moravian sugar cake recipe to the one in my local church fund-raising cookbook. The church book actually had one more ingredient (margarine and shortening in place of butter), but the `Gourmet' recipe spelled out all the steps in far more detail. While the church cookbook called for (leftover) mashed potatoes, `Gourmet' gave us chapter and verse on how to prepare the potatoes for the recipe.
While the `Gourmet' book had richly detailed recipe procedures and supplementary sections on basic pastry techniques, it was NOT a good replacement for one of the excellent baking manuals available today such as `Martha Stewart's Baking Handbook', Sherry Yard's `The Secrets of Baking', or Kate Zuckerman's `The Sweet Life'. It is simply a collection of good dessert recipes at a reasonable price. So, if you know how to bake and you have room on your shelves for another book of desserts, this is as good or better than many you can pick for the price. I should also note that the recipes are quite modern, as illustrated by the use of butter (see above) in place of margarine (watch those trans-fats!). And, like all `Gourmet' collections, the index is an excellent guide to finding a suitable recipe by ingredient and time to prepare.

This is a beautiful book--literally! It's pleasing to the eye and the recipes are pleasing to the palate! They are very classic recipes. I haven't yet checked to see if they call for more butter than is normal but I suspect they do not. At any rate, you will be pleased with photographs of many recipes and the fact that there are so many classic recipes included.

Before I even started reading this book, I did some research on the authors. The thing that amazes me the most is how Mr. Scott and Mr. Grice have been crucified on the Web for their beliefs, mostly by people who haven't even read THE GREAT BRAIN ROBBERY. Tom Scott is an award-winning journalist, cartoonist, columnist, documentary filmmaker, screenwriter, and playwright. Trevor Grice is the director of the Life Education Trust, a lecturer, drug counselor, industry advisor, and public speaker who often lectures at schools throughout Australia and the United States. And yet these men have been touted as anti-drug idiots, men who know nothing about drugs and teenagers, and two men who are out to "get" those who choose to use illegal substances. I'm guessing that the people who spew this nonsense are either users of drugs themselves, or just so uninformed that they think what they're saying is believable.
Pick up a copy of THE GREAT BRAIN ROBBERY, though, and you'll find that Mr. Scott and Mr. Grice have done their homework. This isn't just a book that harps on the dangers of using illegal drugs. The authors provide evidence--medical, scientific, and true-life examples--of how using these illicit substances can damage you. Can damage, especially, the growing muscle that is the brain of a teenager. In this day and age, it isn't just enough to place "Say No To Drugs" banners in schools; it's not just enough to send D.A.R.E. police officers to talk to elementary students. Today's teens are smart, and given the proper information, they can make informed decisions. For every teen who has ever wondered just what, exactly, smoking marijuana does to your body, or how drinking alcohol can effect you later in life, or for parents wondering what to do if they suspect their kids have used drugs, this is the book for you.
In Part One of the book, titled The Challenge, you get the following categories:
Puberty Blues, Is My Child On Drugs?, A Mother's Story, How The Brain Works, Vandalism In The Refinery, You Must Remember This, What Is Marijuana?, The Story Of Two Users, So Who'd Be A Parent?, What Can We Do?, Kids This Is For You, A Sister's Story, Getting Off Drugs, A Counselor's Story, and a Conclusion.
In Part Two, The Danger List, you get a reference guide to today's most popular and major drugs:
Alcohol, Amphetamines, Barbiturates, Caffeine, Cocaine, Designer Drugs, Hallucinogens, Inhalants & Volatile Substances, Legal highs, Marijuana, Nicotine, Opiates/Narcotics, and Steroids.
In Part 3, The Hard Science, the authors back up their findings with a Bibliography and Suggested Reading List, along with a Glossary.
It's not enough to just tell your kids that drugs are dangerous. Although it's true that teens often learn by experience, there's no need for them to experiment with drugs to find out that they can kill you. By reading THE GREAT BRAIN ROBBERY, you, and your teen, will be informed on the hidden--and obvious--dangers of partaking in illegal, and sometimes even legal, substances.
And for those who are looking for ways to avoid drugs in everyday life, perhaps at a party where they're offered something they don't want? Check out the list titled "20 Ways to Say No to Drugs at a Party Without Feeling Like a Dweeb." My personal favorites? "No way. Last time I touched that stuff I went home, tidied my room, mowed the lawns and washed the car. It was really scary, man." Or how about "Have you got anything that won't make me projectile-vomit without warning?" Or if that fails, you can try "No thanks, my I.Q. is dangerously low already." In a pinch, though, just saying "No thanks, not for me" can only prolong your life.
Pick up a copy of THE GREAT BRAIN ROBBERY today. It's one book that just might save your life.

This book holds up today. I've owned it for 20 years now, and still refer to it. Anyone interested in film comedy's history must own this book.

No one understands and appreciates movie comedy better than Leonard Maltin, and here he has written a book on the subject that is simply perfect. His enthusiasm and love of these comedians and their comedies is infectious, and he gives us a giddy yearning to watch the movies he cites. If one is an aspiring comedian, too, this is an inspirational book, filling one with the wonderful possibilities of making an audience laugh. It is difficult to fully describe the unpretentious, simple manner in which Mr. Maltin nails down the very essence of comedy in these pages. How often those who write about comedy smother their subject with detailed theories on its socialogical and psychological implications. Mr. Maltin understands better than anyone the subtle art of analyzing comedy without killing it, making his book an absolute joy.
