I got this book as part of my counseling masters course (MFT) and I must say IT IS THE BOOK for therapist, business people or ANYONE who wants to improve how they communicate with others. My husband sometimes refers to it when he comes by friends who need help in the peoples skills (shy types). Even the most experienced communicator can learn new things! I was AMAZED by the examples, conceptualizations and just the wealth of information.

Everyone should know these skills!

This book should be required reading for everyone, regardless of field or relationship status. If you encounter a friend, relative, or stranger with something on their mind, this book shows you the steps you can take to help that person find the solutions to their own problems, a skill we all have within us. I use the skills in this book as a psychology student, a parent, and someone in long-term relationships with family, friends, and loved ones. If you can't afford the new copy, find an old one. This book will improve how you connect with others tremendously!

Nice text that I use more than any other IM text. Hey, over 100 other books reference it in their pages--enough said!

The first truly comprehensive medical textbook I've seen.

I first came across this book last year when I was feverishly studying for my 4th year medical exams. What really excited me was that I could look things up in the index and actually find a paragraph or two explaining my query, no matter how obscure the reference. Textbooks like Harrisons baffle me; why would I want to spend 45 minutes looking at the ten different times my word has been mentioned when all I want to know is what it means and when its important.

Anyway I think this textbook is very well set out and thouroughly comprehensive. Obviously its not a bed-time read, but its really helpful when you're stumped by a fact in a multi-guess paper or you have some obscure fact to look up and present to your consultant.

I have no hesitation in giving it 5 stars. Right now I'm waiting on the next edition....I hope it comes in soon.

Excellent CTT book for serious students

I pair this text with one on IRT in my graduate psychometrics course. This classic text provides an excellent overview of classical test theory in concise, no-nonsense terms while still being easy to read for an audience of non-statisticians. The chapters are well-organized with helpful study aids.

The book begins with a brief introduction to psychological/educational measurement and a bit of history. The second chapter is a review of basic mathematical concepts. The fun really starts in chapter 3 with the basic propositions of classical test theory and a list of results--this chapter is a marvel of brevity and clarity. The next chapters on reliability (ch. 4), validity (ch. 5), test construction (ch. 6), and equating (ch. 7) build sound practice upon this sound theoretical foundation. Scaling issues are covered superficially in chapter 8 and then a number of important issues are raised in chapter 9 ("Special Considerations..."). The final two chapters ("Controversies and current developments..." and a chapter on IRT) are most dated and least helpful (although, like the rest of the text, the material is covered well and these chapters would serve as a good foundation for understanding recent developments).

In comparison, other psychometric texts tend to be more comprehensive at the expense of being quite shallow. These other texts, which also tend to be verbose, may be better-suited to undergraduate courses designed to gently introduce unsophisticated students to the bare basics of measurement. Allen & Yen is better suited for serious undergrads and graduate-level students who wish to understand classical test theory and to apply it well.

Special note for specialists: while this book includes many issues critical to designing selection tests, industrial psychologists and HR professionals will need additional training on selection (e.g., job analysis) and on legal issues; other specialists will probably also find the book to be quite focused on measurement.

Special note on versions: I own both the 1979 burgundy hardcover and 2001 blue-black paperback editions and, as far as I can tell, they are identical.

A Comprehensive Treatment of a Fascinating Field of Study

Review Date: 2007-05-05
Dr. Clarkson presents a detailed and informative summary of all major aspects of invertebrate evolution. The book is organized in a step-wise fashion that introduces the reader to the main principles of the field of paleontology (including genetics, populations and micro- and macroevolution) and then moves into detailed descriptions of the various invertebrate phyla. Be aware that this is not your typical coffee table book; rather, it is written at a level best appreciated by those with a biological background or by introductory students in this field. Descriptions are appropriately detailed and concise and are accompanied by a wealth of similarly detailed drawings and images. I particularly enjoyed his chapters on molluscs, echinoderms and crinoids. It is a valuable accompaniment to other books that have been written on the Burgess Shale and early forms of non-vertebrate life. Both the armchair paleontologist and the professional will find this to be a most valuable addition to his or her collection of books on this wonderfully diverse group of ancient animals.

Power of Paleontology

This very fine invertebrate paleontology textbook strikes a nice balance between focus on the paleobiology/taxonomy of the organisms and theoretical topics in the science. The well-crafted illustrations help to make the sometimes intricate details of fossil morphology clear. Clarkson has a knack for bringing forth key details that illuminate ancient organisms (e.g., the hysteresis mechanisms that control the liquid in cephalopod chambers), and he writes with a wry sense of humor (see the Lehmann quotation on p. 245). The importance of convergent evolution is apparent throughout the book, and is one of the main lessons to be learned from the science of invertebrate paleontology. The next edition of this book needs to stop calling the Ediacarans a "fauna" (the term "biota" is preferable, as we are not sure that Ediacarans were indeed animals). I also have quibbles with the higher taxonomy presented in this book for other groups. Overall, however, this is an outstanding presentation of invertebrate paleontology.

I implemented Dr. Peters' "Smiley Face System" just last week, and I've seen dramatic changes in my son's behavior already. This book has been a great help in my efforts to change the behavior of my three year-old. Both he and I are happier because of it.

Dr. Peters offers no-nonsense, down to earth solutions to some tough parenting questions. Through practical advice, she shows how stern and loving discipline is the key to happy, healthy, and well behaved children! Not to mention sane parents! She points out the manipulative tactics that young children use with great success and the ineffective parenting styles that fail to nip these behaviors in the bud. Dr. Peters offers a behavior management system with clear and fair rules that are connect to solid consequences and rewards. In addition, she teaches how to apply the rules without your child even being aware they are being disciplined! I am so glad that I found this book! It has truly been a life-saver!

Eminently readable biography
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-13
This book is no act of idolatry, despite the author's reputation as a Southern conservative and Agrarian. Tate believes Davis was a great man, but he points out his flaws as well, his diffidence in acting sooner that might have won the South the War, his pride, his sometime aloofness, his tendency to remain loyal to generals (Braxton Bragg foremost among them) whose incompetence was all too apparent to others, and his refusal to appoint the right men for the right job.

This is an absorbing read that puts one in mind of Shelby Foote's celebrated War trilogy, although Tate's was written first. It has the same novelistic quality and drive and the same quickly drawn but utterly convincing characterizations. The book alternates between presentations of certain monumental battles and portraits of life on the "homefront." The latter is actually more fascinating than the former. We learn in vivid detail of the strength and loyalty and perseverance of the Southern people.

A comprehensive, clear-eyed, and lyrical biography

Review Date: 2003-02-01
Poet, essayist, and Southern Agrarian, Allen Tate brings (brought) to his life of Jefferson Davis not only a tremendous narrative talent, but also a deep understanding of, and sympathy for, the Southern culture that produced Jefferson Davis. But unlike other Southern writers who made Davis a larger-than-life hero of the Lost Cause, Tate pulls no punches in his assessment of the President's weaknesses as well as his strengths, and how they may have crippled the Confederacy from the very beginning.

Tate considers Davis a man of high ideals and great personal honor. At the same time, though, he had a "peculiarly inflexible mind" ("he had not learned anything since about 1843") (p. 197) and a "feeble grasp of human nature" (p. 255). He treated his office as a sort of super-minister of defense, and was never "the leader of the Southern people as a whole" (p. 180). The South could have won the war if she had had the right kind of political leader, Tate argues. But Davis, whose rise to leadership was generally unearned (p. 79), wasn't it.

Beyond Davis the man, Tate also has a deep grasp of the Southern culture and the larger historical and cultural issues that were clashing in the War Between the States. In keeping with his Southern Agrarianism, Tate paints the South as the last outpost of European culture in the Americas, standing against -- and ultimately overwhelmed by -- the surging might of restless, expansionist, wealth-seeking "Americanism," embodied in the Yankee Northeast. Tate's grasp of Southern regionalism lets him place an emphasis on the tensions between Upper and Lower South that, for me, shone a light on the instability of the Confederate government that I haven't seen as emphasized elsewhere.

Tate's perspective and narrative form may not be in keeping with more modern styles of biography. But this book is nevertheless an excellent and insightful read, and I recommend it to any student of the men caught up in, as well as the issues behind, America's bloodiest conflict.

What a pitty that this book is out of print! I found it at the library. This compendium of stitches is a feast for the eyes. The author presents each one of his samples in glorious colors, with detailed explanation on how to achieve them. The variety of techniques used and the multiple possibilities of experimentation, make of this a wonderful step by step teaching book for the beginner machine knitter, and a source of inspiration for the adventurous expert who wants to go beyond the limits to make of this craft an art.

Jesus is coming soon, Christens awake!

This book really seems to teach the truth of Bible prophecy in a way that is overlooked by modern Christens, whether Christens or Jews like it or not God's chosen people are any people on the face of the earth who hear His word(Old Testament Laws and New Testament Gospel), repent from their sinful ways, and believe that Jesus was the Messiah for the people before and will be again in the near future. Another good book that approaches the topic of traditional, yet faulty, Jewish and Christen teachings is Holy Cow! by Hope Egan. If you really want to open your mind and leave the false teachings of people who claim God but do not walk His path, read these books with an open mind. May God be with you on your journey and may you realize you can be His chosen flock.
